Enduro auto racers team up for Nicollet County Fair By PAT BECK pbeck@stpeterherald.com

For Luke Weber and his team, racing on a budget is the key to off-road enduro auto racing. “As long as you get a cheap car going, it’s fun,” Weber said. Racing eight years, Weber, 35, and his friends in the same age group will run a dozen cars together in the Nicollet County Fair Sunday, Aug. 13 at the fairgrounds. Race time is at noon. Luke Weber’s team includes his brother, Nick Weber of St. Peter, Levi Menk of St. Peter and Blake Geyen of Bloomington. They work together on the cars mostly on weekends in the summer at Nick’s farm house south of Traverse. Luke Weber and other drivers also have co-pilots, who ride in the passenger seats. His is Bryon Shultz of St. Peter. Asked about the role of the co-pilot, Weber said, “If there’s someone coming up behind you, they can let you know. If there’s a red flag, it helps if you don’t see it to stop.” The majority of drivers have co-pilots, but they are optional. Last year Weber competed in three classes. This year he will run in four: a 1996 Volkswagen Jetta in the 4-cylinder races, a 1995 Buick Regal in the 6-cylinder races, a 2005 Chevy Uplander in the van class and a 2005 Kia in the new SUV class. Menk runs in two classes: a Toyota in the 4-cylinder and a Chevy Lumina in the 6-cylinder. He drives the Lumina for his

mail route car and turned it into a race car. Weber’s brother, Nick, will drive in three cars: a Honda Civic in the 4-cylinder, a 1996 Lumina in the 6-cylinder and a S-10 Blazer in the SUV/truck class. The event also will feature a fireman’s heat and a new Power Wheels class for children. The vehicles tend to be smaller. If they get too big, it’s hard to get around the track. There’s only got a small area which is also used for the demolition derby on the previous two nights. Weber acquired the cars from people who want to get rid of them. He doesn’t pay much. Some are free. The most he’s paid is $200. “I wouldn’t pay anything over 200 bucks for a car,” Weber said. Although the cars come right off the street, it takes some work to get them race ready. Last year Luke Weber had to put a transmission in a van. “Some don’t have brakes, some of them the floors all rotted out. It’s simple stuff you can fix if you want or drive it the way it is.” Although not required, Weber installs a halo bar behind the seat, so if he does rollover, the roof doesn’t cave in on him. The doors need to be welded or chained shut. Windows, lights and the interior are removed. Weber doesn’t modify his engines. He leaves them stock. He said he knows enough about fixing up cars “to be dangerous.” Weber tries to carry over

the cars from one year to the next, so he doesn’t have to prepare another one. He has used one car for five years. “You don’t want to put too much money into them,” Weber said. “The cars get banged up pretty good, sliding into each other.” Working at Mike’s Countryside Auto Body Shop in St. Peter, Weber has access to vehicles. He got the van from there. “Somebody totaled it out, and they just left it, said we could have it if we wanted it, and it sat out here for four years,” Weber said. He just took the windows out and it was ready to go. On his 4-cylinder, he painted and made it look nice. All the other ones they might paint them one color, so they look somewhat good and put the number on. At Mike’s, Weber does everything: painting, straightening and bodywork start to finish. He does a little mechanical work, like radiators. Blake Geyen runs a lawn service in the cities. Shultz works on fourwheelers and boats at Dranttel Sales and Service. “If we have problems, he helps us fix the car,” Luke Weber said. Luke Weber said he likes racing because it’s an adrenaline rush. The course has jumps and a obstacles including a tire and a dirt pile to go around in an S-curve. “So that makes it more challenging,” Weber said. “And they wet it down, so it’s muddy and slippery.”

Enduro auto races have their ups and downs as this photo shows in last year’s Nicollet County Fair. (Pat Beck/St. Peter Herald)

Racing on a dirt track surrounded concrete walls, the cars can reach speeds up to 50 mph in the dry straightaways. But they run slower in wet conditions. What makes it entertaining for the crowd? “It’s entertaining because you don’t know what’s going to happen,” Luke Weber said. “Somebody might roll over or hit each other. It depends on how wet and slippery it is.” Heat races last 10 laps, consolation and championship are 15 laps and take about 20 minutes or longer. The crowd watches as race cars motor around the track in last year’s Nicollet County Fair. Luke Weber has rolled his cars three times, but he never has been injured. The halo bar is a horseshoe and keeps the roof from falling in. Prizes range from $30 to $200 plus a trophy. Weber said he does it for the fun of it. “If you win money, it’s just an added bonus.” Brad Guth and Charlie Rustman are organizing the event. NICOLLET COUNTY FAIR

Annexstad aims for title of ‘Princess Kay of the Milky Way’ quent days. There are 12 finalists in all, chosen after a May event involving more than 50 county dairy princesses. The dairy princesses gave a speech, participated in a 10-minute interview and answered question in a 5-minute mock media interview. They also sat in on workshops and networked. Annexstad’s passion falls in line with the role of the Princess Kay. “I love being able to talk about what my family does every single day,” she said. “I like talking and public speaking. I participated in speech in high school. Speaking comes naturally to me.” The role of dairy princess requires public appearances, including at St. Peter’s Fourth of July parade. Here, Emily Annexstad, left, was joined by fellow Dairy Princess Stacey Schugel, center, and ambassador Jennifer Wear. (Herald file photo)

Nicollet County Dairy Princess Emily Annexstad is a finalist for the state title of Princess Kay of the Milky Way. (Nancy Madsen/St. Peter Herald)

Through her childhood, she was also involved in agricultural organizations, including 4-H, FFA and Minnesota Junior Holstein Association. She started showing at the county fair, with a calf, at age 6. She’s been on the high school FFA dairy judging team and talked to a lot of agricultural professionals for career exploration. “Being a dairy princess allows me to combine my knowledge and passion for the dairy community with public speaking skills,” Annexstad, 19, said. Her skills and interests also led her to double-major in animal science and agricultural communication and marketing at the University of Minnesota. “I love being able to communicate and talk with people, but I also think the science aspect is really interesting,” she said. She hopes to have a career in which she can combine them. This year’s Princess Kay will have a full plate, with college education, dairy promotional activities and school visits through NFL partnership Fuel up to Play

60. The Super Bowl’s location at U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, in February, will likely add more to that last program’s piece. “With the Super Bowl being in Minnesota in 2018, I would expect that Princess Kay will have some sort of role in advertising that program when it’s here in her home state,” Annexstad said. Dairy has always surrounded her on the family’s dairy farm in Norseland. But she said 4-H and fairs kept her interest growing. “I think I credit showing and giving livestock talks and being able to look up to older 4-Hers as what really got me interested in dairy in the first place,” she said. “I love helping with chores now, but I went through a stage when it was not my favorite thing.” The Annexstads have been faithful attendees to the county and state fairs, which was reinforced once Emily and her brothers, Matthias and Leif, were showing animals. “My family has gone to the fair for as long as I can remem-

ber,” Emily said. “We missed one year for corn silage, but it’s always something I really looked forward to, just going and eating cheese curds and getting to see Princess Kay.” At both, she said, there are friends that she sees once a year, which is another draw. “There’s pretty good ice cream at the county and state fairs, too,” she added.

Emily Annexstad has long had her sights set on being Minnesota dairy royalty. “Being a dairy princess was something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember,” she said. Annexstad, the reigning Nicollet County dairy princess, is a finalist for the statewide title Princess Kay of the Milky Way. This was her aspiration since she saw two young women from Nicollet County as finalists around her sixth grade year, her first year showing at the Minnesota State Fair. She loved seeing

the coronation and their heads carved in butter. Since that inspiration, Annexstad became a dairy ambassador for two years before serving as Nicollet County Dairy Princess, now in her second year. Princess Kay serves as a spokeswoman for dairy products and dairy farms in Minnesota. Midwest Dairy Association, which represents 7,400 dairy farm families in 10 states, manages the program. Princess Kay is named the night before the opening of the state fair. Her head is carved in butter during the first day, while each of the other finalists have their likenesses carved on subse-

Nicollet’s Krohns to be celebrated as county Farm Family of the Year By NANCY MADSEN nmadsen@stpeterherald.com The Krohns keep farming because they love it. Warren and Rachel Krohn with their sons, Brent and Bryce, joke about the long hours that crops and hogs inevitably bring. “It’s just something you like to do,” Warren said. “If you didn’t like it, you wouldn’t do it.” Brent said, “We work with a lot of good people and that helps make everything go.” The family is the 2017 Nicollet County Farm Family of the Year. They will be recognized during the Nicollet County Fair at 1 p.m. Aug. 11 in Johnson Hall. The annual farm family recipient is chosen locally by a group of past Farm Family of the Year recipients and is based on their demonstrated commitment to enhancing and supporting agriculture and community involvement. “The farm families receiving this year’s honors exemplify what makes Minnesota agriculture strong,” said Bev Durgan, Dean of University of Minnesota Extension, in a news release. They bring innovation, science and hard work to farming. They care greatly about the land and animals and delivering quality products to consumers worldwide.” The Krohns’ farm began in 1950 when Warren’s parents, Melvin and Vivian Krohn, bought 160 acres about six miles north of Nicollet in Granby Township. The farm has had dairy cows, Holstein steers, sows, finisher hogs and chickens. In 1978, Melvin and Vivian sold the dairy cows; in 1982, Warren took the lead on the farm. “My dad still helped,” he said. “He said, ‘Have it parked and ready. I’m not getting dirty no more.’” In 1992, Warren and Rachel added Prairieland Pork, a 1,200-

sow farrowing site, and Krohn Pork, four 1,000-head hog finishing barns. Prairieland Pork was sold in 2012. They now custom finish hogs for Wakefield Pork, Gaylord. “We have good family bonding time in the hog barns,” Rachel said. Over the years, the methods and technologies have changed. Equipment is bigger and computerized. “It is better, but it can be harder to figure out when something isn’t working,” Bryce said. Brent said using manure to fertilize has brought savings. “It’s one of the highest-quality fertilizers,” he said. And GPS and variable-rate seeding and fertilizing are more efficient, Bryce said. The family members agree they enjoy working with each other. “We each have a job,” Brent said. When they plant, Warren runs the digger, while Bryce takes the planter and Brent the sprayer. Those can be 20-hour days. Throughout the year, Brent takes the lead on paperwork, while Warren focuses on the animals and Bryce the equipment and maintenance. Brent and Bryce also have jobs off the family farm. They run a custom manure application business, Granby Pumping and Application, and raise crops near North Mankato. Bryce is a journeyman electrician and Brent has a structural engineering business with a partner in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In their few spare moments, they also DJ as BKDJ. “We’ve got about 15 weddings this summer,” Bryce said. They enjoy the time together and visits from Brent and Bryce’s sister Kelsey Horn and her husband Justin and children Karis and Logan. The Krohns are involved in Minnesota Valley Lutheran

The four Krohns value the time working together. “I grew up working with my dad and I wanted my kids to work with me,” Warren said. “It is the dream of most farmers, but perhaps not anymore.” Bryce said, “I always wanted to be on the farm when I grew up.” Brent said there’s great teamwork and flexibility in working with family members. “We can pick up the slack wherever it’s needed,” he said. “There are a lot of things we do that are not in the job description.”

Pedal pull popularity: Kids continue to love the ride By DANA MELIUS dmelius@stpeterherald.com Isabella Schultz of St. Peter won the girls age 4 bracket in the power pedal pull at the recent Elysian community celebration. (Richard Rohlfing/Correspondent)

Watch out for young Isabella Schultz if she enters the upcoming Nicollet County Fair’s kids pedal pull competition. The 4-year-old already won the Fourth of July action at Elysian. It’s part of a growing industry, with the Minnesota State Pedal Pulls competition. The competition also is between different pedal pull organizations. D&S Pedal Pulls in Fairmont is an official sanctioning body for the Minnesota State Pedal Pull competition Sept. 10 at the McLeod County Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. The Fairmont group is sponsoring the August 11 pedal pull competition at the Nicollet County Fair, according to Ron McCabe, a director on the Fair Board. There’s also state pedal pull competition Sept. 12 at the Minnesota State Fair in Falcon Heights. But before any youngster

can set their sights on the state action in Falcon Heights, a kids pedal puller needs to finish in a sanctioned local or regional competition. Top three finishers in those can elect to move on to the state and national competitions. The official competition for the National Pedal Pullers Association and the 2017 National Pedal Pull Championships September 23 in Mitchell, South Dakota at the Corn Palace. Isabella isn’t the only area youngster to keep an eye on during the Nicollet County Fair, which runs August 9-13. The kids pedal pull is typically held 11 a.m. during the fair’s Saturday Kids Day, according to McCabe. The 2017 events are still being finalized. Minnesota 2016 champions from the region included Eric Nourie of St. Peter, who won the 7-year-old boys competition. Sister Natalie Nourie placed second in the Minnesota girls 10-yearold statewide competition. and

also placed fifth nationally. Others Minnesota champions from the area included Dylan Petricka of Montgomery. He went on to place fifth nationally. Daniel Lorenz of North Mankato won the 2016 Minnesota 9-yearold boys competition. The competition has become so popular, adults behind the scenes have been lining up dozens of pedal pull action throughout southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. C&S Pedal Pulls, the Nicollet County Fair sponsoring group, has scheduled at least 45 such competitions -- 9 in June, 23 in July, 9 in August and 4 more in September, trying to sneak in a few additional chances for kids pedal pullers. Last year, five Minnesota youngsters went on to win national pedal pull titles. For more information on Nicollet County Fair events and the annual Kids Day, see the fair’s website.
