This year in the United States of America, every citizen over the age of 18 will have the right to vote. Voting is not only a right, but a privilege and a responsibility for all citizens of the United States. Let’s learn about U.S. elections, the right to vote, and why this important to us as citizens.

When the U.S. government was first formed only white men over the age of 21 were allowed to vote. These men needed to own land to be granted this privilege. This restricted African Americans, Native Americans, women, and citizens younger than 21 years of age the right to vote. This has changed over time as African Americans were given the right to vote in 1870. Women were granted the right to vote in 1920 through passing of the 19th Amendment. Native Americans became eligible to vote through the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 regardless of tribal affiliation. In 1971, adults age 18 to 21 were granted the right to vote with the passing of the 26 Amendment.

Some people may ask, is voting important? It is important that each person vote and get his or her voice heard. It may seem your voice does not matter, but our democracy is founded on this belief.

A democracy was created by the people, for the people when our Constitution was written by our founding fathers. Free and fair elections are the foundation of every healthy democracy.

The air is already getting cooler and the days are getting shorter. It might be tempting to grab a blanket and stay indoors but fall is a great time to get outside and enjoy the crisp air and beautiful colors. The following are 5 things you must do this fall in Owatonna.

Fall Scavenger Hunt.

Get outdoors and moving with a nature scavenger hunt. Search for leaves, pinecones, migrating birds, pumpkins and other fall items.

Owatonna has many parks and trails perfect for searching!

Go for a walk and collect leaves.

Gather the family and take a walk through Kaplan’s Woods this fall.

Search for and see how many different colored leaves you can collect. Once you get home you can continue the fun and make leaf art – check out Pinterest for leaf craft ideas.

Take a leaf peeping bike ride.

Pack a picnic and go for a bike ride to see the pretty fall colors. Owatonna has over 12 miles of paved trails which are great for bike riding. Take a ride through the North Straight River Parkway and enjoy the fall

colors of the trees. Continue along the trail and make your way to Morehouse Park, stop for a picnic lunch and play on the playground. A perfect way to spend a weekend day this fall!

Owatonna has many playgrounds to get outdoors and have some fun. Fall is a great time of year to play at the playground; it’s not so hot! Try visiting Fairgounds Park and climb on the rock wall or go down one of the many slides. Or head to Brown Park where you can play on the playground or start a volleyball or kickball game with your family.

Have Halloween fun.

It can’t be fall without Halloween!

Owatonna Parks and Recreation is planning on offering an outdoor event where you can have some Halloween fun. The event will tentatively be held Saturday, October 24 at one of the Owatonna parks. Visit the Parks and Recreation website for information as the event gets closer.

Head back to school with 4 Be's

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused much stress and uncertainty for students, parents, teachers and staff. With so many changes in our interactions and routines over the last few months, it’s natural that parents and children want their lives to return to ‘normal.’ This desire is especially strong when considering school this fall. School is important for not only for a child’s academic success, it serves an important role in social and emotional health as well.

Whether format that school takes this fall, one thing is certain: Mental health is a vital part of the equation. To work on a healthy mindset for this school year, it may help to actively focus on these 4 Be’s:

• Be flexible. Stay open to the possibility that the format of schooling might change over the course of the year.

Accepting and affirming what they may be feeling helps them move past these emotions.

• Be optimistic. Maintain a positive attitude about learning new ways to learn.

One way to challenge worry at any age is by focusing on other possible outcomes and on steps to minimize exposure to risk. There is a lot of misinformation available online so seek information from reliable sources such as your local health department, your child’s healthcare provider or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

• Be supportive. Contribute to keeping the learning environment as safe as possible by practicing social distancing, masking and proper hand hygiene.

• Be kind. Be patience with each other everyone works toward a common goal of ending the pandemic.

As schools determine their approaches, students will need varying behavioral health support based on their age and the class format.

For in-person schooling Elementary school students may not fully understand why all the health and safety practices are happening. It’s important that parents model safe practices, such as handwashing and wearing a mask. Also, answering questions in a calm manner will provide comfort these students need as they return to school buildings.

Middle school, high school and college students may find their emotions vary between excitement and anxiety. Parents should acknowledge the tension that students may be feeling. Let them know that

individual needs.

Feelings of isolation and being disconnected from peer groups are common concerns affecting students attending school

For remote schooling For students of all ages, schools provide structure and socialization. While it is still important to have structure if the school day is online, it is OK to have some flexibility with the schedule, especially for younger children.

Many children will adapt to a virtual learning format given their experience of growing up in a world filled with technology, but some may struggle with keeping up with homework, organizing tasks and being able to stay focused for extended periods of time. Set up routine communication with your child’s teachers. This will help identify problems early and find ways to adjust the structure or information to meet your child’s

online. While virtual classes can be set up to enhance group discussions and connections, it is just as important to encourage and plan ways to socialize with friends in a safe manner outside of schoolrelated activities.

For hybrid schooling Learning formats that stagger in-person school days or alternate start times, for example, are being proposed by some schools. Changes in daily routines can be a challenge for children and adults.

One simple but effective tip: Post a master daily schedule in a common area of the home, such as the kitchen, to keep everyone on track on a day-to-day basis. This can help provide feedback on which learning formats are working well and those that can be improved.

Teachers and administrators need our encouragement too. Take the time to thank them for their efforts to make the upcoming school year as successful and safe as possible.

For ‘Mental Health 101’ For anyone feeling anxious, it’s common to be irritable or feel a sense of loss or sadness.

Problems with sleep, physical tension and worry can result.

Here are a few basic steps to help manage mental health: • Maintain a normal daily routine.

Aim to wake up and go to bed as close as you can to the same times each day. Stay hydrated, try to keep up with a healthy diet and focus on increasing physical activity

• Learn new skills to manage stress.

Explore how relaxation, mindfulness or yoga can calm the mind.

Also, remember to disconnect from the news. Spending between 15-30 minutes one to two times a day is usually enough to keep informed but not overwhelmed.

Some people may struggle with more significant mental health difficulties. If your child is struggling, reach out to your child’s primary care provider or school counselor about available local mental health resources.

How to clean and sanitize a backpack (MS) Backpacks are useful tools for students and adults alike. From hiking supplies to school books to sports equipment, backpacks can store just about anything. As veritable workhorses, they’re bound to get dirty and can benefit from periodic cleaning.

While it may be tempting to simply throw a backpack into the washing machine, it is important to check the care instructions first. Some canvas, nylon and fabric backpacks can go in the wash, but those made of leather or those with intricate details should not. Backpack manufacturers also advise against putting backpacks in a dryer.

Here are steps to cleaning a backpack.

1. To get started, begin by removing any items from the backpack, including all of the pockets. If necessary, use a vacuum to get crumbs out of the backpack.

2. Check the care label to see if there are washing instructions. This

will determine if you should wash it by hand or if it can be put in the machine.

3. If the bag can be machine-washed, turn it inside out first or place it in a pillowcase so that the straps and zippers will not be caught. Then wash it on a gentle setting with a mild detergent and lukewarm water. If the bag should be hand-washed, use lukewarm water and a soft sponge or a gentle bristle brush. The outdoor retailer REI says you do not want to harm any protective coatings on the pack.

4. Zippers need occasional cleaning to remove dirt, sand or crumbs.

Many zippers have water-resistant coatings so do not scrub them. Use a lubricant made for zippers to help them slide smoothly.

5. Hang the bag to air dry upside down. It likely will dry more quickly outdoors, but avoid direct sunlight, which can compromise the integrity of the fabric or discolor the backpack.

6. Do not store or use the backpack until it is completely dry.

7. Sometimes a backpack may need to be disinfected to prevent the growth of fungus or bacteria. Athlete’s foot fungus can easily transfer from socks and shoes to the backpack if gym clothes are left in the bag. The Spruce says to skip chlorine bleach and use a pine oil or phenolic disinfectant or a disinfectant wipe, such as Pine Sol or Spic-n-Span. Lysol brand disinfectant also can be used and is available in liquid formula or spray.

If a backpack is waterproof, only wash it once or twice per year; otherwise, you may reduce the pack’s ability to repel water. Use cleansing wipes to spot clean when necessary.

Backpacks can get grimy quickly.

Routine washing can freshen them right up.

What are the different kinds of that can cause sickness and disease?

The word “germ” is really old and goes back hundreds of years to describe the beginning of something growing, like how a seed would “germinate” and grow into a plant. When doctors were first trying to figure out what were the things that caused the beginning of a sickness or disease they used the “germ” instead of “seed” as a way to identify that one little thing where a disease grows from.

This led to many years of scientists searching for the “seeds” of disease, the germs, which we now know include: Protozoa, fungi, bacteria and viruses. All of these small organisms can only be seen through either a light microscope or electron microscope.

Only protozoans, fungi and bacteria and fully living organisms that feed on other living things, which can cause sickness and disease. Viruses are not fully alive, but they need our cells and bodies in order to reproduce and make more viruses. It’s when they use our cells and bodies that cause us to become sick and suffer from disease.

How do bacteria & viruses cause illness and disease?

organism. Many bacteria are important for us to live because they help fight off other bacteria that are trying to feed ON US. For example, we have a bacteria on our skin called Staphylococcus epidermis (Staff-i-low-kock-cus, epee-der-miss or “Staff epi”) that protect us from other bacteria

that can cause infection. If we get a scrape or a cut, bacteria that grows in dirt can get inside our skin and Staff epi can’t protect there and this new invading bacteria can cause the cut to become “infected”. An infection in a wound can become very painful, and washing the cut with soap and water removes the dirt and bacteria out of the wound. A clean wound helps your body heal itself by allowing new cells to grow and replace the injured ones. Once your skin has healed, Staff epi regrows and protects you from any other bacteria trying to get inside your skin.

Now, a virus is very similar to a bur seed, but it is so small that it’s almost impossible to see unless we use a powerful electron microscope. Viruses are covers in small protein spines or hooks that cause them to stick onto our cells. The new virus that causes COVID-19 disease is covered with so many sticky spikes that it looks like the shiny corona of the sun, and the name “coronavirus” stuck.

Viruses on the other hand can’t live and reproduce without using another living organisms to help it. It works like getting burs stuck in your hair, or clothes, or shoe laces. Burs are the seeds of the Burdock plant.

The seeds are covered in small hooks, like velcro, and when you touch them the seeds “hook” onto your clothes and you carry the seeds to new plants away.

When the seeds fall off, or you pull them off and throw them away, they “germinate” and new Burdock plants grow. These new plants make new bur seeds and the cycle happens over and over. UNLESS, we make sure not to touch Burdock plants covered in bur seeds! If we don’t touch the burdock plants, we don’t get burs stuck on our clothes or hair. We can do the same thing to protect ourselves from sticky bacteria or viruses!

Once a virus sticks to a plant or animal cell, the virus injects its’ DNA into the cell. The DNA is like a seed that can grow inside the cells and creates new viruses.

The cell doesn’t know when to stop making new viruses and makes so many viruses that it pops and dies. That’s when we feel the pain of a sore throat and we cough and sneeze to get rid of the viruses and the cells in our body that died.

This is when we need to be extra careful because sticky viruses can fly through the air in our coughs and sneezes, which can be picked up by another person who touches something where your sneeze droplets land. Yuck!

But if we wash our hands, don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth with your fingers and wear a mask, you can protect yourself and others from sticky viruses!

It takes time but our body can fight off a virus infection by making virus blockers that prevent them from sticking to our cells, this is called our “Immune system”. Sometimes our body produces the virus blockers quickly and we heal fast after being infected with a virus. Other times doctors can give us a vaccine (Vack-seen) that prepares our immune system to block any new viruses that you might pick up, like Influenza, measles, or mumps.

Technology of Personal Protective Equipment:

How do PPEs protect you and others?

Public health is when everyone works together to protect each other from bacteria and viruses that can cause sickness and disease. Modern technology can be used as “Personal Protective Equipment”(PPE) to allow us to be safe and be in public! Doctors, nurses, dentists, and many health care providers have used PPE for many decades to prevent all kinds of infections from happening when you visit a clinic or hospital.

Why wear PPE? The history of “sterile” medicine began hundreds of years ago when doctors learned that “germs” fungi, bacteria or viruses can cause infection when a person had surgery. Doctors developed masks, gloves and gowns that prevented bacteria or viruses they were carrying from getting into their patients.

Today, people in many countries wear masks in public when they are feeling sick, to prevent themselves from spreading sticky viruses to others in public. In Japan as soon as students go to school in Kindergarten, they learn how to wear a mask in their classroom if they feel sick or have a cough or sneeze.

How do modern PPE prevent the transmission of bacteria and viruses?

The key to preventing viruses from traveling around in the air and sticking to the surfaces of things like door knobs, table tops or windows is to stop the viruses flying from your mouth, or nose and to clean

things people have touched. Masks allow a person to breathe and talk but limits how much of the air and spit droplets can leave your mouth and land on a table.

Face shields will also slow down the air movement and prevent spit spray and you can still see your face!

Here only one person is protected and two people could become sick.

But when more people are wearing masks, fewer people will get sick, if we all wear masks no one will hopefully get sick!

Keeping your mask or shield clean is also important.

Wash your mask or shield every day and have extras in case you forget one, or can’t find yours. It’s important to NOT TOUCH your EYES, inside your NOSE or inside your MOUTH with your fingers, unless you’ve washed your hands with soap and water. Soap and water destroys viruses and washes them off your fingers and hands.

But, the best technology for keeping you safe and healthy is your own mind: Mind your hands and fingers, keep them clean and free of sticky viruses Mind that you DON”T TOUCH your EYES, NOSE or MOUTH with your fingers or hands If you have to pick your teeth use a toothpick then throw it away. If you have to blow or pick your nose, use a tissue and then throw it away. Toothpicks and tissues will keep you clean and healthy! Be careful not to scratch at your eyes with your finger tips, use a knuckle instead.

How can we build the best protection against spreading viruses? What are the best things to make PPE out of?

Cloth masks are recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). Cloth masks work the best to prevent viruses from traveling in our breath like the way a coffee filter keeps the grounds out of the coffee. Cloth masks are very good air filters and can remove any droplets of saliva from our breath and allow only the air to move in and out of your body.

Face shields are what they sound like, a shield that prevent anything from moving either way through the plastic. The air you breathe has to move up and down from below the mask. But if you move your mask or shield away from your mouth and nose, then you have no protection from either picking up or spreading sticky viruses!

A paper mask can absorb the moisture from your mouth and nose and can’t be washed. So a paper mask can be used once, but then should be thrown away and replaced. That makes disposable paper masks expensive over time!

How can we make our own PPE? You bet, if you or someone in your family likes to sew there are lots of different patterns and materials that you can use to make your own masks. The basic mask is a double layer of rectangular fabric that uses two hair binders for ear loops.

Sew the two layers together, leave a small border to make a seam that holds the hair binder in place and it’s done!

A face shield can be made using clear plastic, like the dividers used in notebooks, then hot glue an elastic headband to one side of the piece of plastic. To keep the face shield comfortable on your head, hot glue a piece of soft foam onto the plastic shield where the headband is connected. This foam rest on your forehead and helps keep the shield farther from your nose!

COVID-19 caused by the SARS-2 coronavirus can be pretty scary, but if everyone learns about how to stop the virus from spreading, everyone can be safe and healthy. A great way to help people remember what to do to be safe and healthy is to make colorful cartoon posters!

How can we tell if a PPE really works?

Let’s look at some data to find an accurate answer.

How far can sneeze droplets travel?

When scientists used slow motion video recording and computer analysis of sneeze spray, they were able to determine that droplets from a typical sneeze can travel at 75 miles an hour and can land over 25 feet away! That means the sticky coronavirus can land on things, like tables, books, chairs, etc., that might be 25 ft away from somebody if they don’t cover their own sneezes!

In this photo engineers from Florida University College of Engineering measured a cough being stopped to only about 8 inches!

What about a cough?

An unprotected cough can easily travel 8-10 feet, as seen in this computer video image:

To measure how fast a sneeze or cough travels we need to measure how fast water droplets travel for each foot they spray from our mouths. We can try an experiment with a spray bottle full of water, different types of materials used in masks, a tape measure, and a stopwatch (or smartphone).

But wearing a mask can reduce the distance either a cough or sneeze travels to less than 1 foot, if the mask is made of double layer cloth!

First use the spray bottle to figure out how far the water droplets will spray with a single squeeze. Using colored construction paper will help you see where the water droplets land. Record this distance, next use a stopwatch to measure how much time it takes for the water to leave the spray bottle and hit the paper.

Speed = Distance/Time. Divide the distance traveled by the water by time it took to hit the paper. You may need to use a calculator. That will tell you how fast the water traveled in feet per second.

Use the table below to convert feet per second into miles per hour.

Now try to experiment again to see how far the water droplets spray if you cover the spray bottle with your elbow, or a paper mask, or a cloth mask or a plastic face shield.

I’m a lot like you – I go to school, play in the band and I LOVE sports! I have a younger sister and a puppy and I love to do crafts when my schoolwork is finished. My favorite thing to do is help people and try to spread kindness, so that’s why I think I’m a good person for you to ask questions. You can send me anything – school problems, friends, parents – and I promise I’ll do my best to give you a good answer. You can ask a question any time, and I will answer in an upcoming Kids Konnect magazine.

Dear Izzy: I’m feeling nervous about the new school year.

What do I do?

Don’t worry, you are not alone. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. You might already know a lot of kids in your classes on the first day. But it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did and so will your new friend!

Here are a few final tips for a fantastic school year: • Get enough sleep.

• Eat a healthy breakfast.

• Try your best.

• Use good work habits, like writing down your assignments and turning in your homework on time.

• Take your time with school work. If you don’t understand something, ask the teacher.

• Keep a sense of humor. Laugh, it’s a good way to remind yourself that school is FUN! Dear Izzy: A couple of my friends won’t be going to school this year since they are homeschooling. What is homeschooling?

When you learn reading, math, and other stuff taught in school from your parents or tutors who come to your house, it’s called homeschooling. Your friend may be the only one, or he or she may be taught with brothers, sisters, or kids from the neighborhood.

Parents choose to homeschool their children for many different reasons. Sometimes a kid is sick and can’t go to regular school or parents also might choose homeschooling because they want their child’s education to include religious instruction (learning about God), which isn’t offered at public schools. Your friends might even benefit from the one-on-one attention. If he or she struggles with math, they will have more time and help to better understand how math works. Kids who are homeschooled also may get out in their communities more than other kids. They might get to experience hands-on education at museums, libraries, businesses, marinas, and other community resources. They also might volunteer or participate in “service learning” where they take on local projects.

So much has changed in the past several months that I’m not sure where to start. I’ve decided to start with March, as that‘s when the pandemic started to affect my life. With little notice I relocated from my office downtown to my home office.

Not only that, but my kids began distance learning. What’s a working mom to do? I called them “coworkers” and began daily posts on Facebook highlighting what they did every day for 11 weeks. From workman’s comp claims for on the job injures, to HR complaints, mandatory overtime, and meetings on conference call etiquette, I attempted to see the lighter side of us all working from home. I even began referring to my husband as “the bearded salesman” and other people in the community began to recognize him as such. It wasn’t as difficult when we thought this was a short-term arrangement and that things would be back to normal in the Fall. Well, shows what we know!

So I bought fun prints so they have a bit of humor to them.

Now we look at the next school year. This is not how I thought it would go at all! Face masks for kids going back to school, distance learning for those who aren’t, hybrid of both for the older students. The positive here is we get to decide what to do, the downside is that people are criticizing others who make choices that don’t mirror their own, political views break long term friendships, and worst of all… our kids are watching.

So when you go out, put on your mask even if you hate it.

Whether it’s tye-dyed, floral, or Holstein printed, and make sure to wear a smile underneath. Put some positivity into the universe and remember your kids feed off of you energy… don’t you want to feed them positivity?

Ever do something and then see your kid mimic it later? (this can be good or bad) That’s happening right now. Our kids are watching our actions, and reactions, and learning what to do.

We don’t necessarily know the “right choice” right now. All we can do is make choices that are the best for our families. Yours may not look the same as mine, and that’s okay! We can still be kind to each other. That’s the message I want to get across.

Whether its politics, parenting, or the way you mow your lawn, it’s okay to disagree but we can do it with kindness and a positive attitude.

I need to take a moment to say how appreciative I am of the teachers in this community! You have gone above and beyond to teach our kids. I know first-hand that this is a job you do out of love and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

In 2020, November 1 is a Sunday, November 2 is a Monday, the first Tuesday following the first Monday is Election Day…Election Day in 2020 is Tuesday, November 3. Elections for president are held every four years. Presidential election years always end in numbers that can be divided by four.

The years 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032…are all presidential election years.

You’ll also need the following: Patriotic cupcake liners (get them on Amazon at this time of year, or maybe at a party supply store) Red, white and blue ribbon Pin backs (or you can just tape them to a shirt if you don’t need these to last very long) Regular glue (and hot glue if you’re using the pin backs)

Once you have colored your badges, cut them out. Flatten the cupcake liners and put them down with the printed side up. Glue the badges to the center of the cupcake liners with regular glue.

Next, cut a piece of patriotic ribbon about 9 inches long, and fold it in half in the shape of a V. If you aren’t using the pin backs, just glue this to the back of the cupcake liner so that the ribbon is hanging below the badge. If you are using the pin backs, glue it with the hot glue gun to the pin back first, and then glue the two together to the back of the center of the cupcake liner. The pin backs I used had both a pin and a mini alligator clip. They were perfect for this project!

HOW TO PLAY : 1. Choose how many players will be in the game and whether they’re human or computer players 2. Each turn, drag between two horizontally or vertically adjacent dots to draw a line 3. Drawing the 4th wall of a box wins it, earning you a point. When you close a box you must move again.

4. Lines are drawn until all squares are claimed. The player with the most claimed squares wins!

5. Be careful not to create long chains of boxes for your opponents to claim 6. Think of creative ways to double cross your opponent, forcing them to give you the long chains!

RULES Dots and Boxes is a fun and simple classic pen-and-paper game for 2 or more players. The game starts with an empty grid of dots. The grid can be any size and Gametable’s Dots and Boxes has a handful to choose from.

Players take turns connecting 2 unjoined horizontally or vertically adjacent dots. A player who completes the fourth side of a 1x1 box earns one point and must take another turn.

Usually a coin is flipped or Rock-Paper-Scissors is played to see who goes first, but in Gametable’s Tabletop Dots and Boxes, Player 1 always starts first.

The game ends when all lines are drawn and boxes are claimed. The player with the most points wins. If more than one player has the same high score, the game is a tie.

Ingredients Two 4-ounce semi-sweet chocolate bars (226g), coarsely chopped* Two 4-ounce white chocolate bars (226g), coarsely chopped* Festive Halloween candy such as eyeball sprinkles, Halloween sprinkles, and Halloween M&Ms* 1. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Set aside.

2. Melt the semi-sweet chocolate. You can melt it in a double boiler or the microwave.

If using the microwave: place the chopped chocolate in a medium heat-proof bowl. Melt in 20 second increments in the microwave, stopping and stirring after each increment until completely melted and smooth.

5. Allow the chocolate to completely set uncovered at room temperature or in the refrigerator, about 45 minutes. Once hardened, break into pieces as large or small as you want.

6. Store bark in an airtight container at room temperature in a cool, dry place for up to 1 week or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

3. Melt the white chocolate following the same melting process in step 2.

4. Pour the melted semi-sweet chocolate onto the prepared baking sheet and spread out into a large rectangle (anywhere around 8×12 inches is great). Drizzle the white chocolate mixture on top. If needed, I have a visual of this step in my Sweetheart Swirl Bark video.

Use a knife or a toothpick to swirl the layers together. Decorate the top of the bark with candies.

Notes Freezing Instructions: For longer storage, freeze for up to 2 months and thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Chocolate: Do not use chocolate chips or morsels because they do not melt properly. Pure chocolate is best for easy melting and best taste.

“Ghouls Mix” M&Ms and Wilton brand Halloween sprinkles available at most grocery stores. Use any Halloween sprinkles or candies you enjoy!

Ingredients 1 package (7.5 oz) Double Chocolate Milano cookies 1 cup white chocolate chips 1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil 32 black pearl sprinkles or chocolate chips Steps 1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

2. Since white chocolate hardens so quickly, it’s easiest to work in several batches: In a microwave safe bowl place 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips with 1/4 tablespoon vegetable oil in the microwave.

4. Lightly tap the cookies on the edge of the bowl to get a nice even coating of chocolate. (Don’t dip the cookie in the chocolate because the chocolate in the milano will mix with the white chocolate).

5. Place the dipped cookies on prepared baking sheet and allow to completely dry.

6. Repeat with remaining cookies.

3. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir, and microwave for another 25 seconds. Stir until melted or return to the microwave for a little longer. Add more vegetable oil if needed.

3. Holding the cookie in one hand and holding a spoon in the other hand, spoon the melted chocolate over the top 2/3rds of the cookies.

Place all the leftover white chocolate (make sure it is still very melted -- place in microwave for another 15 seconds if needed) into a small plastic bag (or a frosting bag fitted with a #2 tip) 8. Cut the very edge corner off of the bag and then pipe the melted white chocolate over the cookies to form the “bandages” of the mummy.

9. Secure 2 sprinkle eyes on the wet chocolate.
