By Kellen Hinrichsen (Steele County Historical Society) I get asked a lot why we do what we do at the Steele County Historical Society. I will be asked questions such as “why should I care about what happened back then?” or “why is it important that we save all of that stuff?” These are always good questions and I love to have the chance to talk to people about them and discuss what I do.

The simple answer I can give is that because our past is important.

I have heard the saying of “those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it” over and over again, but there’s more to it than that. The past is what helped to shape who we are, and the Steele County Historical Society just got a large donation that helps to show just that. The History Center is now home to a

large mural that once hung in a downtown restaurant in Owatonna (Jerry’s Supper Club) for 50 years.

To someone that didn’t grow up in Steele County, this might just seem like any old painting, but it’s so much more than that. I have heard dozens of stories from people who went to that restaurant, telling me about birthdays, family gettogethers, anniversaries, working at the restaurant, and the list goes on! This piece of art is connected to so many memories of the past and has brought great joy to a lot of people since we preserved it. This is why we preserve the past. This is why what we do is important.

Preserving the past allows us to grow and to become more whole as a society, as a people. Our past matters, even if moments were hard or negative. Our past makes us who we are, and THAT is why we preserve it. To preserve who we are as a people.

Coloring Contest Rules 1. Children from Owatonna, Blooming Prairie, Ellendale, and Medford who are in kindergarten through 3rd grade are eligible for the contest.

2. Pictures are available on page 5 in Kids Konnect magazine. Individual sheets are available at Steele County History Center, Owatonna Shoe, Central Park Framing and Finds; Prairie Home, Blooming Prairie; Lerberg’s Food, Ellendale; and Anhorn’s Gas & Tire, Medford.

3. Completed pictures need to be brought to the Steele County History Center by 5 PM, Thursday, April 1st.

4. Pictures will be grouped by grade level; kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.

5. Winners and one parent, will be invited to SCHS for a pizza party on Thursday, April 8th.

6. Pictures may be colored using crayons or colored pencils.

7. Children should place their name on the back of the picture with a phone number or email address.

Sea Lions at Morehouse Park – in the mid-1960’s there were two sea lions in a tank for the enjoyment of park visitors. The tank was in the river just below the dam.

Navy Fighter Jet at Gainey Park – in 1959 a fighter jet was brought to Owatonna and placed at Gainey Park. Kids would visit the park and enjoyed climbing on the jet. The jet, in the park is pictured below.

Rocket Slide at Fairgrounds Park – in the 1970’s Fairgrounds Park featured a rocket slide. The slide looked just like a rocket! The rocket slide, pictured below, was a popular attraction for kids.

Car Wash at Mineral Springs Park – A hard surfaced area in the stream bed of Maple Creek was specifically constructed for the purpose of washing vehicles. People could drive in the river, park their car on the pad and give it a washing.

Earth Day and its History Our planet is an amazing place, but it needs our help to thrive! That’s why each year on April 22, more than a billion people celebrate Earth Day to protect the planet from things like pollution. By taking part in activities like picking up litter and planting trees, you can help make Earth a better place to live.

1970 – THE FIRST EARTH DAY In the years leading up to the first Earth Day, Americans were using large amounts of leaded gas through their automobiles and air pollution was

common. After the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, Calif., Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. senator for Wisconsin, organized a nationwide demonstration against the pollution and the deterioration of the environment. The protest was held on April 22, 1970.

Approximately twenty million Americans joined the demonstration in support of a healthier and more sustainable treatment of the environment.

EARTH DAY TODAY Today, Earth Day is widely recognized world-wide; more than a billion people every year celebrate earth day as a day of action to change human behavior and create policy changes.

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 and is a chance for you to make our Earth a better place to live and consider how your actions impact our planet.

A Little Literary History Dr. Seuss, Theodor Seuss Geisel, was born in Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. He published his first book in 1937. Can you guess what it was?

It was And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street. But what about his two best known works? Well, Cat in the Hat was published in 1957 and Green Eggs and Ham was published in 1960.

Dr. Seuss’s publisher bet him that he could not write a book using fifty or fewer different words.

He wrote Green Eggs and Ham using exactly 50 different words. Green Eggs and Ham has the fewest words of all of his books and is Dr. Seuss’s best selling title. Dr. Seuss died on September 24, 1991. We celebrate his legacy every year on March 2, National Read Across America Day or Dr. Seuss Day. On April 12,1916, Beverly Cleary was born in McMinnville, Oregon. She spent much of her childhood surrounded in books. Her school librarian suggested that she should write books for children when she grew up. She liked that idea, and decided that someday “she would write the books she longed to read but was unable to find on the library shelves: funny stories about her neighborhood and the sort of children she knew.” (BeverlyCleary.com) Her first book, Henry Huggins, was published in 1950. She has since written over 30 books for children. Her best known characters are Ramona Quimby, Beezus Quimby, Henry Huggins and his dog Ribsy as well as Ralph S. Mouse.

Beverly Cleary has won many awards for her children’s novels over the years including a 1978 Newbery Honor for Ramona and her Father, a 1982 Newbery Honor for Ramona Quimby, age 8 and the 1984 Newbery Medal for Dear Mr. Henshaw. Cleary’s birthday is celebrated nationwide as DEAR Day. The D.E.A.R. Program (Drop Everything and Read) is a national month long celebration of reading “designed to remind folks of all ages to make reading a priority activity in their lives.” (BeverlyCleary.com) This year, be a DEAR and Drop Everything and Read on April 12th to celebrate Beverly Cleary’s 105th birthday.

So begins the poetry collection Where the Sidewalk Ends written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein published in 1974. Within its pages, we are encouraged to dream and imagine the impossible.

Shel Silverstein was born in Chicago in 1930. He was a singer, songwriter, screenwriter, cartoonist, poet and award-winning children’s writer. His first children’s book, Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back was published in 1963. He is best known for the books The Giving Tree published in 1964 about the love of a tree for a child, Where the Sidewalk Ends, a poetry collection published in 1974 and A Light in the Attic published in 1981. A Light in the Attic was the first children’s book on the New York Times BestSeller list where it stayed for a record breaking 182 weeks. Shel Silverstein died in May of 1999. April is National Poetry Month. Why not celebrate it with a book by Shel Silverstein?

What’s happened in the history of science?

We often think that science is a lot of stuff we have to memorize, like the different parts of an atom, or the difference between a carnivore and herbivore or Newton’s Laws of Motion.

There is a lot of information to know about scientifically, but most importantly is to know that science is a way of learning and discovering how the world works.

People have almost always been trying to figure out how the world works, because we ask a lot of questions about the world around us. Science is a method we use to answer those questions. For example, what causes an object to move across a table? We could use our imagination and say, “It’s magic and some one cast a spell., like in Harry Potter.”

Or as Isaac Newton discovered, some force needs to be applied to that object in order to make it move, otherwise the object will simply sit there on the table without moving for ever! IN the 1700s Sir Isaac Newton did all kinds of experiments to see what kinds of push and pull forces cause things to move.

What he discovered that there are three basic laws that dictate all motion of all things we’ve ever observed on Earth or in space: 1. An object at rest remains at rest unless acted upon by another or unbalanced force.

2. The force can be calculated by multiplying the mass (m) of the object by its acceleration (a), “how fast it’s moving”. He wrote this as a formula where the Force (F) =mxa 3. For every force there is an equal and opposite force that resists it. In order to walk forward, a person needs to push backwards on the floor. When the floor doesn’t resist us, in other words the floor is “slippery” we fall down instead of stepping forward!

One of the difficult puzzles to solve in science the answer to the question, “How do plants and animals look so different today than in ancient times before?”

It was the discoveries of two scientists, one in Britain who sailed around the world when he was a young man and the other in Austria who loved to garden

and grow plants. When the discoveries by these two scientists are put together, the process of Evolution was explained.

Charles Darwin spent 3 years traveling around the world as a ship’s naturalist collecting plants and animals from everywhere they landed. After he came home he spent the next 30 years studying his specimens and doing experiments of breeding the plants and animals to see if he could recreate the changes he observed in how they looked. His best experiments were breeding all different kinds of pigeons! He discovered the law of Natural Selection , that plants and animals have traits that allow them to either survive or reproduce.

So, evolution uses the principles of natural selection, along with the ratio of Dominant and recessive traits to show how plants and animals can change what they look like over many generations!

Try a fun game that follows the rules of evolution and play Pokemon. You can find Pokemon, grow them and evolve them and they change over time to become amazing pocket monsters that were designed based on ancient fossils and living animals found in the ocean!

His most famous example were his specimens of little birds he collected on different islands off the coast of South America called, the Galapagos Islands. Darwin figured out the each of the birds were actually closely related, but they each had unique beaks allowed them to find just the right foods to survive. The birds that had the right beak passed that trait to their offspring and over many generations each island had its own unique little finch!

Gregor Mendel loved to garden and grow vegetables, especially peas. He noticed that when he planted certain kinds of peas that the offspring plants they produced always were in a ratio of 3:1, with every 3 offspring looking one way and the fourth one looking another.

He called these traits, Dominant and Recessive, traits. The Dominant traits were observed 3 times more often the Recessive. These became known as Mendel’s Laws of Inheritance, today we often call the science Genetics.

As technology advanced, our needs to communicate changed from early telephones which had only one line, you picked up the earpiece and began talking to an operator, who would connect your line with the person you wanted to talk to. Over the years, phones added a dial which allowed a person to electronically connect with someone using a number code.

Overtime , telephones grew smaller, easier to use and offered more ways of talking to someone. By the 1990s telephone stopped using wires and used short distance radio waves and were the first “wireless” telephones.

In the past 20 years, wireless networks have created amazing ways for us to communicate with each other that we’ve never had before, we can share pictures, play games, record video and now have video conversations so you can see the person you are talking to, WOW! Since modern cell phones are the most amazing pieces of technology, what can we use them for, that more than talking, playing games or taking pictures or videos? “Smartphones” are powerful computers that can do many things in our life, let us know how you use a smartphone or a secret trick you learned to do with your phone!

Engineering is a process of problem solving where we design a solution, build it and see if the technology that was constructed works to solve the problem. Over the years, the things that people built have stayed longer on Earth than the lives or memories of the people who built them. Let’s explore a few of the engineering marvels found around the world that are still very difficult to figure how, “How did they build that?!”

Stonehenge No one knows or understands why these enormous stones were carved and arranged in this pattern. You can see Stonehenge today in England and help try to figure out “how did people build that without modern machinery?!”

Great Wall of China was built in order to keep their enemies out and protect their people from war. This wall is built of individual stones pieced together without using modern concrete and has been standing on the northern border of China for almost 1,000 years. The wall is so large and so long that satellites can see the wall from space! If you look carefully at this satellite photo, you can see the jagged, tan colored wall on the right side of the picture. This picture is from Google maps and is set to satellite images!

Horyu-ji located just outside the city of Osaka Japan Oldest wooden building in the world and was built in Japan over 1,400 years ago. The building is five stories tall and every board, wall, and floor were pierced together without using a single nail or screw! You can still see the pagoda today and walk on inside to see the amazing engineering of the wood construction.

Mo-ai Easter island monoliths are more than just the “heads” that we see above ground, the bodies of the giant statues are buried deep into the ground. The granite the monoliths (giant stone statues) were sculpted out of is located miles away from the area they were placed.

How did people move the huge statues to this location and then bury it in a deep hole?!

What are some of the oldest pieces of art ever found?

Here is the Hohlestein Stadel Lion Man that is over 38,000 years old and was found in Germany. It’s considered the oldest sculpture of a human like figure ever discovered.

Sulawesi Cave Art (37,900 BC) Inside a cave in Indonesia archeologists found images of human hands. People would spray paint from their mouths over their own hands touching the rock wall and the paint made a picture of an outline of their hands. When the scientists measured that hand size they found them to be almost the same size as people’s hands today!

Jeffers Petroglyphs, These carvings are over 7,000 years old and found right here in Minnesota.

The art is made of carving in red limestone rock and when water is added to the carving you can easily see the images of people, bear’s feet, animals like Bison and fox and spears. If you would like to see these ancient carvings, they can be found less than two hours drive west of Owatonna near the city of and just north of the city of Windom, MN.

The oldest art ever discovered here in the United States is located in Oregon and appear to be images from nature, likes birds and fish and of an old person’s head.

The stone was determined to be over 11,000 years old and may have been made by the native American tribes that have lived in that area for thousands of years.

We know how to count to 10, but when did we add the number “0”?

People have been using mathematics for thousands of years, especially to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Culture around the world represented numbers all different kinds of ways: We often see Roman numerals used today, especially in formal documents and for decorative writing. This system of numbering was used across the Roman empire for hundreds of years.

Egyptian hieratic numeral were used by the Egyptian empire for hundreds of years and used widely around the Mediterranean sea and across the continent of Africa.

Arabic numerals and it’s worldwide use today.

Japanese appears similar to Egyptian and was a major numerical system used in Asia. Their system was based on the ancient Chinese system that first introduced the idea of zero when counting and calculating different amounts of things. Can you see how similar the two systems are? Which numbers look the same, which are different?

Do you see where 500 years ago when scholars in European countries adopted

the Arabic numerals and for the first time included the radical idea of Zero, “0” a number that represented nothing?!

The famous mathematician Fibonocci promoted the use of this Arabic numerical system and it is used in hundred of countries and languages world wide!

Almost all other numerical systems only had numerals for amounts of something, it was Arabic speaking people who emphasized the concept of nothing = “0”.

Kids in 1918 coped with a pandemic, too

Just over 100 years ago, kids were living through a global pandemic, just like you are now. And it was even worse: • Between 50 and 100 million people died worldwide.

• A half-billion people were infected.

• Of those infected, up to 20% died. Today, flu typically kills less than 1% each year.

The pandemic in 1918 wasn’t caused by a coronavirus, like COVID-19, but by a particularly deadly strain of influenza of flu that no one had immunity to. This wasn’t “stomach flu” where you get sick and throw up. Instead, it’s where you run a fever, have body aches, your lungs get congested, and you feel pretty awful for about two weeks. Most people died ― not from the virus itself, but because they were weakened from influenza and developed pneumonia. Unlike today, there were no antibiotics in 1918 that could treat pneumonia.

Spreading worldwide People mistakenly thought this deadly strain of influenza came from Spain because that’s where it was first reported in newspapers. That’s why it was called Spanish flu. Scientists now think it came from somewhere in Asia. Like today’s pandemic, it came in waves, and lasted more than two years. It particularly affected those living in crowded conditions and the poor, and struck mostly those 20 to 40 years old. The Spanish flu

had little effect on children and the elderly.

The 1918 flu pandemic took place during World War I, so it also affected those serving in the military. They lived close together in camps and were transported from the U.S. to Europe and other war zones in crowded troop ships.

Getting out the news Unlike today, the 1918 flu wasn’t headline news. People around the world were more concerned by the war and their daily lives.

But that doesn’t mean there was no news about the flu. In September 1918, a headline in the Rochester Daily Post and Record read, “New disease in Rochester now.” No one knew much about the Spanish flu then, but that soon changed as it because more widespread. People were informed via newspapers, silent movie newsreels, national magazines, telegrams, the mail and by telephone, which was new then.

Stopping the spread Unlike COVID-19, health care professionals didn’t know what worked best to fight the Spanish flu. Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester set up isolation units to keep patients with Spanish flu separate from others. Everyone pitched in to care for the sick. At Mayo Clinic, it was all hands on deck to learn about this virus and find treatments, as well as provide care.

Some towns and cities shut down, closing theaters, poolrooms, churches and meeting places, and quarantined their residents, asking them not to gather in crowds. In Rochester, one bank began offering “bank by mail” to limit personal contact.

Masks were a thing then, too. In October 1918, the Red Cross in Rochester called for 2,500 “contagious ward masks” to be made in one week. Sewing circles, neighborhood groups, students, churches and other people sat down at their sewing machines and got busy making masks based on recommended patterns.

People all over the world wore masks, but not everyone wanted to. Businesses and transportation providers prevented people who weren’t wearing a mask from entering a business or riding a train or trolley.

Keeping kids safe Like today, kids were not the ones affected the most by the 1918 flu virus. But it still had a huge impact on them. Schools were closed across the country, although this wasn’t new because it was one of the few ways to keep kids safe from diseases like polio and measles. At the time, no vaccines were available for these diseases.

it was hard for kids to stay connected, especially in rural areas. At that time, half of all students in the country attended rural schools. When small-town schools and one-room schoolhouses in the country closed, teachers may have sent reading assignments home with students. Some cities, like New York City and Chicago kept their schools open because they felt it was safer for kids to be in clean, large airy classrooms rather than cramped homes or apartments. When they arrived at school, they had to wear masks, couldn’t gather outside and had to report to their classroom immediately. 2nd Graders have been busy learning about U.S. History. They watched a kid’s news show of the inauguration - did you know the granite pavers outside the capitol came from MN?? They also watched a video of Mrs. Berg, our librarian, reading books about Kamala and Joe as children and what great lessons we can learn from their childhoods.

They had a big research project on Abraham Lincoln, where they used what they’ve learned about non-fiction books and how they are organized. The 2nd graders started by taking notes together on three sections of his life: early 28 • March/April 2021 • Kids Konnect

childhood, adult life and Presidency.

Next, they moved to independent research before moving onto research paper writing!

Focusing on facts about Lincoln’s life and Presidency tied so well with Black History Month, since he was known for freeing slaves. These young minds learned about an influential African American each day of February, which spurred some great discussions! They also wrote out “Dreams/wishes” for our future similar to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. So much fun and so much learning happening in 2nd grade!
