National Tooth Fairy Day is August 22!

Let’s take a look at what kids in other countries do when they lose a tooth. Did you know: • In the Philippines, kids leave their teeth on the windowsill and the Tooth Rat trades the tooth for a treasure.

• In Columbia and South Africa, kids leave their tooth under their pillow or in a slipper, and a little mouse comes for the exchange.

• In Chile and Costa Rica, kids give their teeth to their mothers, who make charms out of them and give them back to the kids.

• In Indonesia, kids throw their tooth backwards over their shoulder and over the roof of the house. If they throw them straight, their permanent tooth will grow in straight!

• In Brazil, kids toss their teeth out the window in hopes of having a bird pick it up. The bird only picks up clean teeth and then leaves a gift or coin for the tooth.

• In Pakistan, kids wrap their teeth in a cloth and then throw it into a river. This is considered good luck.

Jam-packed with tons of fun things to do, we think this issue of Kids Konnect is our best yet!

Because it seems that every activity all summer long is geared towards, or has something to do with the biggest event of summer in Owatonna – the Steele County Free Fair – we decided to devote this issue to all things “carnival.”

From fun fair-foods you and the young’uns can make now to get you in the mood for “fair food,” to sharing the story of that cool collection of old buildings on

the east side of the Fairgrounds known as the Village of Yesteryear – there’s something for everyone.

Get a first-hand look at a “day in the life” of a 4-H’er with a show animal – we’re not sure many ADULTS could keep up with that demanding schedule!

teach yourself how to meditate (see page 25). We’ve also got a great, healthy recipe made with veggies your kiddos have grown in their school gardens on page 11. It’s good – and good for you!

4-H Grows Here Every August, the Owatonna community comes together to join in the tradition of attending the Steele County Free Fair. The hustle and bustle of the fair is exciting for everyone, but for some of our youth in Owatonna, the fair is more than rides and snow cones.

Lanie, a senior this year at Owatonna Senior High School sat down with Kids Konnect to share with us about her experiences in 4-H. Having started with 4-H in second grade, Lanie has plenty of fond memories of showing animals and participating in general projects for the fair.

Lanie started by leasing sheep to show at the Steele County Free Fair. By the time she was in third grade, Lanie and her older sister decided they wanted to start Lanie, their own flock Senior at OHS of sheep. It is a hobby and passion that still continues today. Using land at their Grandma’s house, they now have 30 sheep and 10 goats. Chores are completed twice a day and include bringing fresh water, feeding the animals and providing fresh bedding. During the school year, Lanie will wake up at 5:00 a.m. to complete the chores before school, and will return after dinner around 6:00 p.m. for evening chores.

When Lanie showed her sheep at the fair she said she learned valuable lessons. She used to be shy, but she said 4-H really helped her come out of her shell and has really helped increase her confidence in herself when she’s speaking in public. 4-H’ers who have live6 • July/August 2019 • Kids Konnect

Your age determines the sort of questions the judges may ask about your animal. For example, Lanie said if you are younger, the judges may only ask your animal’s name, but as you get older the judges’ questions are more in-depth and can include questions about determining things like feed ratio!

General projects can include anything from making honey to drawing, performing arts to photography – and everything in between. 4-H members who have general projects at the fair also present their projects to judges.

“What I love about 4-H is you can pick and choose your involvement. It’s not like some sports where if you miss too many practices or games you’re off the team. You get out of it what you put into it. Now as a senior, looking back, my involvement with 4-H has been very rewarding. It’s also where I met some of my best friends,” Lanie emphasized.

The 4-H buildings are a highlight for many visitors to the fair. Be sure to stop in and see the animals – and all the amazing general projects on display. Congratulations to all 4-H members – your dedication and passion for

handful fresh pea shoots 3-4 slices raw carrot 2 slices cucumber 1 mini Babybel cheese 1. Harvest the pea shoots from your Fairy Kitchen Garden by cutting near the base of the stem with kitchen scissors.

Place the pea shoots into a cardboard muffin cup or small bowl. Use cookie cutters, or hand cut flower shapes from the carrot & cucumber slices.

3. Make the Babybel ladybug. Start by removing the outer wrapper from the cheese, leaving the wax layer intact. Using a small round cutter, cut a semicircle from one side of the wax for the head, then remove the wax, leaving the cheese intact.

Cut a triangle from the wax, point side towards the semi-circle you just removed. This will form wings.

5.Add two of the wax dots back onto the cheese in the head area to form the eyes.

2. Add the carrot and cucumber flowers to the pea shoots, arranging them on top to look like growing flowers.

4.Using a tiny round cutter or the end of a drinking straw, cut dots from the wax and remove.

6. Pop the cheese ladybug on top of the salad to decorate, then serve immediately. This is a fun and healthy dish to serve at parties and sleepovers.

Let’s find science at the Fair!

The Fair has lots of animals, so let’s observe how they all behave. We can look at three exciting exhibits to get started: “Butterfly Encounter,” “All-Star Stunt Dogs,” and the exotic petting zoo will be great places to see all kinds of creatures….up close and personal!

Butterflies aren’t too afraid of people since they really don’t have many predators in the wild. What they’re really interested in is eating the sweet nectar of flowers and they flutter from one flower to

What makes a Stunt Dog? How can dogs learn so many tricks and then show off to a crowd of onlookers?

Dogs learn through conditioning. They respond to commands from their training and the trainer rewards them with food. Dogs love to eat, they will do almost anything to earn a treat. When a trainer rewards their dog with food the dog learns to expect a treat every time they do a certain behavior, such as sitting, staying still, laying down, coming when called and answering when they hear their name.

Each breed of dog has different abilities and skills at which they excel. Some breeds learn how to respond to their trainers faster than others. While some consider these dogs to be “smarter,” it would be more accurate to say they’re a breed that cooperates better with their trainer. Intelligence is often measured by how well animals can solve problems, and one breed that stands out among others in problem solving is the Border Collie. When you watch the All Star Dog show, write down how many different tricks you saw dogs do. Keep an eye out for the Border Collie, you’ll be amazed at how “smart” that breed can be!

Rides are designed to have strong harnesses to hold you in position and provide enough room for you to move without getting hurt. Also, the rides use gravity and centripetal forces

to keep you stuck in the seat of the ride. Centripetal forces use circular movement to spin you around and push your body mass into the seat and it feels like you’re stuck to the chair!

An amazing feat of engineering to observe is Impact Autocross! Engineers need to keep drivers safe, and they do this with structural engineering and by designing impact zones. When cars collide with other objects at high speeds, the car itself has areas designed to crush together and protect the driver within.

Look at these diagrams. Can you identify the integrated safety cell and impact energy absorption structure? The outer structure should be designed to absorb energy. The inner structure should be designed for strength and survivability.

The awesome thing about the Steele County Free Fair is it’s FREE to attend the fair. BUT, if you want to go on rides, play games, see shows and eat all the amazing food, that’s going to cost you. So, how can you spend the dough you have and have the best day of the year too?

Create a budget and record all transactions, this can help you decide what to spend your money on and see how far you can stretch your cash to last all day.

1. Write down what you spent your money on, example if you bought an ice cream cone or mini donuts, in the left column.

2. Then write down how much you spent in the middle column.

3. Subtract how much you spent from how much you have, then write down the amount of money you still have in the right hand column.

Keep an eye on the right hand column because this is the money you have left to spend as you have fun at the fair. Remember that you should always compare the cost of different things you want to buy to see if you can find the lowest cost

of the food, game or item you want to buy. It’s also a good idea to always know how much money you start with and how much money you have throughout the day at the Fair so you can enjoy yourself the entire time you’re there!

My favorite thing to do is help people and try to spread kindness, so that’s why I think I’m a good person for you to ask questions. You can send me anything – school problems, friends, parents – and I promise I’ll do my best to give you a good answer. Dear Reader: My favorite summer snack is frozen grapes – yummy! I’ve always loved grapes, but to eat them frozen…can you say, “amazing!?” Any seedless grapes will work, so choose your favorite. Or do like I do – make a mixture! Wash the grapes, put them into a freezer bag and drop the bag into the freezer. Pull out a handful any time you’re craving something sweet on a hot summer day!

Dear Izzy: Where is your favorite place to read a book?

Dear Reader: I love to read outside in the summer. My sister and I have a playground in our back yard where we like to build forts with blankets, so sometimes I crawl into the fort and read. We also have a family cabin up north and when it’s raining or too cold to go swimming, everyone grabs their books or magazines and curls up with blankets on the porch and reads.

Dear Izzy: My family is new to Owatonna and I heard one of my friends talking about “Crazy Days.” What is it and should I go?

Dear Reader: Absolutely, especially on Friday, which is ‘Kids Day!’ Crazy Days happens mostly downtown, and it is a time when you can get really good deals if you like to shop like my mom does.

But for us kids, there’s a parade and a crazy hair contest, and then there will be a special program in the bandstand at Central Park.

There’s so much good food to eat, and lots of great things to do.

Crazy Days happens July 25-27 this year – I’ll see you there!

Making fitness fun for kids Just because school is out and they’re not on a scheduled phy-ed program, it’s important to make sure your child maintains physical activities in his or her day-to-day routine.

Guidelines from the Department of Health and Human Services recommend at least an Dr. Ann hour a day of moderSneiders ate (walking, running around the yard, climbing on rocks) or vigorous (biking, team sports, etc.) aerobic activity.

Vigorous activity should be included at least three days a week.

Many common school-age activities – such as playing on playground equipment and jumping rope – can be continued all summer. Organized sports such as baseball or soccer are a great way to stay fit, too. Here are some more tips for increasing physical activity:

Get creative as you search for activities your child enjoys. If your child is artistically inclined, consider a nature hike to collect leaves and rocks for use in a collage. If your child likes to climb, head for the nearest jungle gym or climbing wall or State Park. If your child loves reading, walk or bike to a local library for a book. Kids love music; turn on your favorite music and dance together. With middle and high school kids, consider You Tube for Zumba and other dance videos.

Exercise with your child to better your own health while helping your child develop sound exercise habits. You are a role model as a parent, and your child is more likely to be physically active if you do things with them. Walk to the nearest playground and let your child burn off some energy on the playground

equipment. If you have a dog, grab the leash and encourage your entire family to go for a 20-minute walk after supper.

Look to your local community and recreation centers for other fun ideas that your child has interest in. Community education courses offer various options from organized sports, guided walking tours, swimming lessons and much more. We have a great water park in town – consider a season pass. We also have great bike paths – try them out! Don’t forget the bike helmets, though.

Remember, incorporating physical activity into your child’s daily routine sets the foundation for a lifetime of fitness and good health.

The Village of Yesteryear

The Steele County Historical Society was first formed in 1949 by a group of area residents who saw the value to record and preserve the history of Steele County. The Society was reorganized in 1951 and 1958 as the group overcame obstacles of a meeting place and museum space. The first museum was inside the 1873 Courthouse at 139 East Main Street.

In 1986, the Society relocated to its present location at the Steele County fairgrounds.

In 1962 the Society was offered the Saco Church, and with the support of the Steele County Agricultural Society, the Society was leased the southeast section of the fairgrounds to create the “Village of Yesteryear.”

Kenneth Lysne from Blooming Prairie sketched the village to be similar to the center of Owatonna and its circular Central Park layout. Other historical structures 28 • July/August 2019 • Kids Konnect

have since been added to the Village of Yesteryear.

Throughout the 1960’s, many of the most popular buildings were given to the Society and moved to the fairgrounds site, including both cabins, the District 14 Schoolhouse, the Bixby Depot, the General Store and perhaps the most recognizable building, the Dunnell House.

In the 1980’s, 90’s and early 2000’s, the Village gained many unique buildings. Most were donated, but several were also built on the site. The BuxtonMcClintock Farm Machinery building was built in 1984, and the Fire Hall and the Gazebo were both built in 2000. One of the most talked-about buildings on the Village property came in 1984 – the “Privy” – or outhouse, as we’d call it today. It was built 100 years before it was donated (imagine that!) and it was unique at the time because it was a “two-seater!” The most recent addition to the Village “family” is Gus’

Educational gardens are maintained on the Village campus too. Behind the two-story cabin is the Liberty Garden which is reminiscent of World War I-era gardens that were designed and planted to support the war effort. Americans planted vegetable gardens to supplement their food source; citizens sent monetary contributions to the government to help fund the war. The herb and flower gardens adjacent to

the Dunnell House depict what the Dunnell family may have planted in the late 1800s. Markers are placed to identify plant varieties providing an educational walk through this area.

The Steele County Historical Society provides guided tours of The Village of Yesteryear May through September, and also offers year-round special events including educational opportunities for children.

In 2012 the History Center was opened to give the Society a formal exhibit space, genealogical and research center and a climate-controlled artifact storage space. The History Center is self-funded through donations, endowments, legacy donors and fundraising events. SCHS Board members and community volunteers participated in the design and construction of the Center, and continue to help with maintenance of the facility today. A simplified mission statement of the Steele County Historical Society was adopted in 2014: “Preserving and sharing history today for tomorrow.”

Everybody yawns — from unborn babies to the oldest great-grandparent. Animals do it, too. But why, exactly, do people and animals yawn? No one knows for sure. But there are many theories (ideas) about why people yawn.

One is that when we are bored or tired, we just don’t breathe as deeply as we usually do. As this theory goes, our bodies take in less oxygen because our breathing has slowed. Therefore, yawning helps us bring more oxygen into the blood and move more carbon dioxide out of the blood.

Yawning, then, would be an involuntary reflex (something we can’t really control) to help us control our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. Sounds good, but other studies have shown that breathing more oxygen does not decrease yawning. Likewise, breathing more carbon dioxide does not increase yawning.

Hmmm. Now what?

Other people believe that yawning is a protective reflex to redistribute the oil-like substance called surfactant (say: sur-FAK-tint) that helps keep lungs lubricated inside and keeps them from collapsing. So, if we didn’t yawn, according to this theory, taking a deep breath would become harder and harder — and that would not be good!

But there is one idea about yawning that everyone knows to be true. It seems contagious. If you yawn in class, you’ll probably notice a few other people will start yawning, too. Even thinking about yawning can get you yawning. How many times have you yawned while reading this article? We hope not many!

Another theory is that yawning stretches the lungs and lung tissue. Stretching and yawning may be a way to flex muscles and joints, increase heart rate, and feel more awake.

The first Ferris Wheel was 264 feet high and was invented in the United States by engineer George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. It was introduced at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. According to the Smithsonian, about 1.4 million people paid to ride the Ferris wheel during that World’s Fair.

The first-known carousel (also called a merry-goround) ride in the United States operated in 1799 in Salem, Massachusetts, and was called a “wooden horse circus ride.” Some early carousel horses were crafted with real horsehair for the manes and/or tails.

The Tilt-a-Whirl, the ride that launched a thousand stomachaches, was built by Herbert W. Sellner in 1926 in Faribault, Minnesota. It made its debut at the Minnesota State Fair one year later in 1927.

What we call “Cotton Candy” was originally called “Fairy Floss” and was invented in 1897

by Nashville candy makers William Morris and John C. Wharton.

It was introduced at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. It has also been called “Spun Sugar” and in the United Kingdom it is called “Candy Floss”.

In 1959, a mechanical engineer named John Scurlock first designed inflatable structures (or bounce houses).

The idea of designing an inflatable house occurred to him when he saw his employees jumping on the inflatable covers for tennis courts.

The day was bright and hot and perfect for flying, and Eddy could hardly wait. Today – THIS AFTERNOON! IN TWO HOURS! – Eddy’s mom was taking him to the county fair, where he was going to meet his all-time favorite celebrity, Mr. David “The Bullet” Smith Jr. Eddy had seen Mr. Smith fly over the Ferris wheel two summers ago at the fair – after he was shot out of a cannon! It was amazing, and Eddy had never stopped talking about what he had seen. When he learned “The Bullet” was coming to the fair again this summer, he was nearly beside himself with excitement. Eddy had written a letter to the people in charge of the fair, asking if he could meet his hero. After some lengthy discussion and several meetings, it was decided that Eddy could spend an hour with his hero on Kids’ Day at the fair. And that was TODAY! Carefully and precisely, Eddy folded a new paper hat out of the comics his Grandma had saved for him from the Sunday paper. Eddy liked using the colored comics better than the black and white comics from his paper. He thought his hat looked WAY cooler in color. When the hat was finished, Eddy took a bath with his dad’s special good-smelling soap, paying extra-special attention to his feet, his neck and behind his ears. Mom said those were the spots where little boys got the dirtiest.

Eddy dried off, combed his hair and raced to his room to get dressed. He chose his favorite blue shorts and the new grass-green shirt he got last Christmas. He’d been saving it for a special occasion, and he figured today was as special as it could get!

Eddy raced to the kitchen, where his mom was putting the finishing touches on a special cake she had made for tonight’s dessert. It was in the shape of a star because Eddy was going to meet his favorite star today.

“Mom, come ON. We’re gonna be late!” Eddy urged, not even noticing the cake. Mom rolled her eyes, grabbed her keys and purse, and they were on their way. “Finally!” Eddy wisely grumbled to himself.

After what seemed like forever to get there and park the car and walk through the fairgrounds and talk to all of Mom’s friends she saw, they were there. By Mr. Smith’s cannon. Eddy’s heart was beating so fast as he scanned the area around him for any sign of “The Bullet.” Suddenly, he felt a tap on his shoulder. Eddy swung around and looked up and into the eyes of “The Bullet.” The eyes were smiling.

“Hello, young man! I’m David, and I believe you must be Eddy. I’m glad you’re here,” said Mr. Smith, extending his hand towards Eddy in a gesture of friendship. “I’m glad YOU’RE here,” Eddy stammered as he shook his hero’s hand. “How did you learn to fly?” Eddy burst out. He was dying to know.

The two sat on a bench near the cannon. “Well, Eddy, that’s a really long story, but I think I can safely say it happened because of my father – he’s a David, too! When I was a boy, my father was a trapeze artist, and it wasn’t long before he became a human cannonball. Things went smoothly for a long time, but then one time Dad landed wrong and hurt his back. I was 19 then, and studying to become a teacher. Dad asked me to fill in for him while his back was healing and, well…..I guess you could say I got hooked. I had actually taken my first shot when I was 17, and it was terrifying. But like anything, the more you do it, the easier it gets. So before long, I wasn’t a teacher any more. I was “The Bullet” – a human cannonball, just like my dad!” Mr. Smith explained.

Eddy’s Dad didn’t do anything nearly as exciting as this for his job. He worked in a bank. Eddy hoped he’d do something MUCH more awesome when he grew up. Like “The Bullet.” Like Mr. Smith.

“Mr. Smith, how does it work? How do you fly? Can I try it? Do you fly every day?

Is this your everyday work? My Dad works in a bank. I don’t want to work in a bank, I want to do something cool like you do!” The words were tumbling out of Eddy’s mouth.

“Slow down there, little Buddy! And you can call me David. We’re friends now,” David said. “And it’s difficult to explain how the cannon works because it involves lots of math and physics and chemistry – and I know those are subjects you haven’t studied yet in school. PLUS – I don’t want you getting any big ideas that you can do this yourself. THAT would be a terrible thing to do – you could be badly injured, or even killed because you don’t have the training or the safety equipment to do this properly. So promise me you’ll be content to watch ME fly for now.”

Eddy’s eyes were huge, and he shook his head somberly. “Yes sir, David, I promise. I’ll just watch you.”

David checked his watch and grinned at Eddy, whose face brightened immediately. “Guess what time it is, Eddy? It’s time to FLY!” Eddy was fascinated as he watched David zip into his flight suit and helmet. He watched in awe while David climbed into the long barrel of the special cannon that would shoot him over the Ferris wheel and into the huge net on the other side.

Just before he disappeared into the barrel, he waved at Eddy and gave him the “thumbs-up” sign for luck. Eddy returned the gesture. The announcer’s voice startled Eddy, and he was surprised to notice his Mom seated next to him on the bench. He wondered how long she’d been there.

“Laydeeez and Gentlemen! If you’ll turn your attention towards the Ferris wheel and your eyes to the sky, you’re going to see one of the most ah-MAAAAY-zing sights known to man.

Right before your eyes, you’ll see it here. Winner of five Guinness World Records, he’ll dazzle you with his sheer BRAVERY as he flies, without wings, over this Ferris wheel. For over 20 years, he’s made this flight over EIGHT THOUSAND TIMES all around the world, from Australia to South Africa, from Europe right back here to these grrrreeaat United States! Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I give you the one, the ONLY David Smith Junior….The BUULLLLETTT!”

Ka-BOOOM! The cannon roared to life, shooting its occupant high into the late afternoon sky. “The Bullet” sailed effortlessly over the Ferris wheel and landed in the center of the net, where he waved to the cheering crowd, dismounted and was led away by his assistants.

Eddy was caught up in the moment, clapping and screaming along with everyone else in the vicinity.

Eddy’s Mom stood up and held out her hand. “Let’s go, son. Dad is probably waiting for us, and I should get dinner started. Besides, I’ve got a surprise waiting for you, and Dad is excited to hear about your big day!”

Eddy slid off the bench and took one last look at David’s cannon before he took his mother’s hand and followed her out of the crowded fairgrounds. He couldn’t wait to tell his friends Nickel the Buffalo and Harley the Husky what he had done today, but he was hungry and tired. Nickel and Harley could wait until tomorrow.

Summer is in full swing and it’s time to get the kids outside having fun. We love playing games as a family but it can get expensive buying a lot of games.

I decided it would be fun to make our own DIY Outdoor Games so I headed to the store for the supplies. It was really easy finding everything I needed for a few fun games I knew the kids would enjoy. Heck, hubby and I loved playing them too.

Here are some of the DIY outdoor games I made for the family to enjoy.

Large Tic Tac Toe

Make the tic tac toe game using a plastic table cloth, duct tape, and 2 different colors of plastic plates. Cut the table cloth so it is square then measure and tape off the tic tac toe area in 9 equal squares. Cost- $4 Small kids can play it like regular tic tac toe, just on a larger scale. Older kids can play by tossing the plates like a Frisbee onto the square they want. They’re really having fun, I just snapped this photo at the wrong time to show that.

Fly Swatter Badminto

You will need flower fly swatters and wiffle golf balls.

Cost – $2 Play like regular badminton. We played over the football toss since it was already set up but a net would be even better.

Pool Noodle Football Toss

You will need 5 pool noodles, duct tape, a football, and rebar from the hardware store. Form 3 of the noodles into rings and tape where they meet. Tape each ring individually then taped them together. Tape the end ring noodles to the long ones. Place the 2 rebar pieces in the ground then slide the noodles over each one. Cost – $9 You can give each hoop a different point system or just one point for each throw thru the hoop. We played it where you would get a point each time you tossed it thru.

Ins and Outs

You will need 8 balls (of different sizes) and rope. Cut 8 pieces of rope the size of a hula hoop then tie the ends together. Place the rope circles fairly far apart from each other. You will need a ball for each circle. Place 4 balls inside each circle and 4 balls outside each circle. Cost – $2-8 This was our favorite game and it’s more fun the more people you have playing. You have 2 teams, one team is trying to get all the balls inside all the circles while the other team is trying to get all the balls outside all the circles. It is so fun and very fast paced.

Bucket Ball Toss

You will need 5 buckets, 3 soft balls, and sticky numbers. I used my vinyl cutter to make numbers for each bucket, you could also use sticky letters. Cost – $6 Line the buckets up starting with the smallest number closest to you. Each player gets 3 balls to toss and the player with the most points wins.

Smaller kids can stand closer to the buckets with older kids starting farther away.

Great Tip: You can also make or purchase a Game Bag to carry all the supplies except for the football toss. We’re going camping this Summer and this is going to be so fun to bring along. I was able to make all 5 games for $23-29. It was inexpensive and easy to create all these games and my kids are having a blast playing with them.

Now I’m trying to think of more games to make.

CHOCOLATE COVERED FROZEN BANANAS Ingredients: Bananas Chocolate Bark or Chips Toppings (we used pecans) You will also need popsicle or lollipop sticks Topping Ideas: Sprinkles Pecans (or other nuts) Coconut Sprinkles Mini M&Ms Peanut Butter Chips (ummm YUM)

Instructions: Attach your bananas onto your sticks. We used lollipop sticks but you could also use popsicle sticks or small skewers. We also cut our bananas in half.

Freeze your bananas for a few hours. They don’t have to be fully frozen but just firm.

Right before you are getting ready to remove the bananas from the freezer melt your chocolate. Set aside your topping on a plate so that you can roll your bananas once dipped. Dip your bananas in the chocolate and then roll them in your favorite topping.

Set aside for a few minutes until the chocolate hardens.
