Kids Konnect had the pleasure of meeting with Owatonna Middle School students, Sadie Fox and Lydia Dahlen. Sadie and Lydia are in eighth grade and both very active in music, theatre and dance.

For some of you, you may already be involved in music, theatre and dance…. but for those that are not, there are so many ways you can get involved and there’s a great reasons why you should.

Learning to sing or play an instrument and participate in theatre and dance has many benefits for students and adults.

What are your hobbies or activities?

Theatre, Dance (hip hop,lyrical) and jazz band and band

Piano, dance, drawing, painting and theatre

Music I have played the alto saxophone since 5th grade. I really like the sounds a saxophone makes and my favorite music to play is jazz music.

Theatre I have been in six plays and have loved every one I’ve been a part of, but my favorite character has been a clown. This past fall, I was able to be a director of a short play and I really liked seeing how the students got better every day. Directing taught me how to be patient, work hard and get others to listen to my instructions and advice. If I had to pick which one I like better, acting or directing, I would say acting. I really like being in the play because you get to wear cool costumes and get to play someone else.

Dance I also dance at Unlimited Possibilities Dance Studios. My favorite style is definitely hip hop, I LOVE hip hop. “It takes a lot of practice and you might not get it right away but you just have to keep trying and in the end it will be worth it.”

Music I have played the piano since I was five years old. Playing the piano is my favorite as I really like playing the keys smoothly and hearing the music melt together. Playing an instrument has made me better at reading music and it’s made me think more creatively. My favorite music to play is classics like Fur Elise and Minuet.

Theatre I have been active in theatre for the past two years which has consisted of being in four plays and two musicals. My favorite character I’ve played is probably a peasant/storyteller in ‘Once on this Island’. As an eighth-grader, we had the opportunity to also direct a play. I was excited to take on this new twist and not just be an actor in the show, but be the director. My favorite part of being the director was seeing the actors work hard but also laugh at all the funny moments. Overall, I really like both acting and directing but I probably like acting more.

However, when I directed this past Fall I did learn how to be patient, how to be responsible and how to work in non-ideal circumstances…. all of which I know helped me grow as a person.

Dance I have danced for the past 11 years. I currently dance at Unlimited Possibilities Dance Studios.

My favorite style is probably ballet as I always had a lot of fun in that. “Being involved in theatre, music and arts can help you become more confident, you can learn new things about yourself, meet new friends and be more creative.”

Think about a creative twist to your favorite childhood classic story or write a story about your favorite pet, friend or about you! When you are finished with the short story, look for craft supplies to make it come to life.

Popsicle sticks make for an excellent homemade puppet.

For each character mentioned in your story, make a popsicle puppet using the popsicle stick, craft paper and anything else you can find. The more creative and fun the better!

After all of your characters are ready, grab your friends and family and perform your short story. An easy way to make your own ‘stage’ is to take two chairs and a bed sheet. Behind the sheet you can have your written out story and all of your new puppets and make your story come to life.

Charades A classic game that can be played with the whole family and in any setting is charades. Have everyone write down on small pieces of paper things to act out. You could have all the items be a specific theme like animals, things found in your house or at school… the options are endless. After you have everyone write down items on a piece of paper, put them into a bucket.

Take turns taking one of the pieces of paper out of the bucket and without using any words, act out what the word is.

To get you started, we have made charade playing cards for you, simply cut them out and add them to a bucket to start.

Mr. T has worked for the Owatonna Public School District for the past ten years. His favorite thing about teaching phy ed is providing students with activities that challenge them in a variety of ways and observe students’ growth through those challenges. His favorite thing is to work and be outdoors and spending time with his family on adventures near and far.

Hi guys, Mr. T from Lincoln here. One of my favorite times of the year is during our Minnesota winter season. I’m guessing you might be thinking the opposite right now but honestly, there are so many winter activities in our community that you should try this season.

I’ll start with my favorite family activities, winter hiking/snowshoeing. We have so many trails in our area to check out from Kaplan woods to our Rice Lake State park. Depending on the depth of the snow will determine if you need just boots or snowshoes. Snowshoes help you travel when the snow is deep and make for a great adventure. Every time my family has been out on a hike we love to watch for wildlife and their tracks in the snow.

Another favorite of mine is ice fishing. Grab an adult who likes to ice fish and ask them to take you out. The excitement of waiting to see your bobber start plunging under the water will get your heart racing to set the hook and real up that monster fish.

Once we have enough snow it’s time to hit the sledding hills. There are a number of them around the area to try out. This is a great family activity that everyone in your family should give try! I remember last year when we took our Lincoln students to the snow hills across the street and went sledding for two days in a row. It was so much fun and we all came away sweaty and tired.

One other activity that has sparked my interest has been ice skating. I didn’t have the opportunity to ice skate growing up, so I have always been a little nervous of trying.

But after my first attempt at Four-Seasons ice rink, I came away excited to try again.

You can rent skates at Four Seasons free skate time or at Morehouse Park. Don’t be afraid to try something new and outside of your comfort box.

I hope you are able to get outside with your family and friends over our winter months and enjoy the activities we have in our community to stay active and healthy.

You won’t regret trying one of these winter activities!

The role pediatricians can play to combat bullying (Metro) Children endure bullying every day. Surveys from the United States government and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research indicate that as many as one in three children in the United States and Canada report being bullied.

There’s no simple solution to combat bullying. A collective effort from parents and educators can help children overcome bullying and show children who engage in bullying just how much their behavior hurts other youngsters. Pediatricians also can play a unique role in combatting bullying.

According to StopBullying. gov, a website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that supplies information on bullying and how to

prevent it, pediatricians can be invaluable resources in the fight against bullying.

Pediatricians can recognize signs of bullying during routine health examinations, and that recognition can be especially important given that many kids never report being bullied to their teachers or their parents. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Experimental Criminology found that only about 20 to 30 percent of students who are bullied notify adults about the bullying.

Parents who suspect their children are being bullied can speak with their children’s pediatricians to see if the doctors feel their youngsters are exhibiting any signs of victimization. Such signs are not always physical, which can make them more difficult for parents to recognize.

StopBullying.gov notes that pediatricians can familiarize themselves with ‘Connected Kids: Safe, Strong, Secure,’ which is primary care violence prevention protocol developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics that aims to educate pediatricians about bullying and the role they can play in violence prevention.

In addition to recognizing signs of bullying parents might not see, pediatricians can play an advocate’s role in regard to combatting bullying, advising educators and other school officials that children are exhibiting

Bullying affects families across the globe. Combatting bullying is often difficult, but parents should know that they have many resources, including their children’s pediatricians, at their disposal.

First of all we need to figure out what “music” and “noise” are before we can say how they’re different.

Scientifically both are types of sound, which is a form of energy caused by an object or material vibrating.

A sound that has a regular, repeating frequency is called a “Note”. Birds are capable of producing a single pure note when they sing, but when mammals vocalize, they produce multiple parallel notes, which are called “Harmony”.

Howler monkeys, for example are the loudest land animals on Earth, their calls can be heard clearly over 3 miles away!

But animals calls, human singing or playing an instrument can still be either notes or noise, but what makes music, enjoyable to listen to and noise irritating?

Music is made up of sounds that follow very specific patterns, such as regular notes, equal harmonies, repeated rhythms and pitches in the range of our hearing that “feels” good rather than causes pain.

Sounds that make “noise” are usually notes that have random wave patterns and have pitches that can hurt the ears. Take a look at the graph above that shows a regular wave pattern for a note and random wave patterns for noise.

For human beings we can hear low pitch sounds of 20 Hertz (Hz) up to very high pitch of 2,000 Hz, but the range that we like best is between 150-500 Hz, it’s about the same sound as an adult human voice.

When a band, choir or orchestra begin to tune their instruments, the conductor will play a “C” at 261 Hz or an “A ” note at 440 Hz. This range of sound is the middle range that human beings prefer for listening to music. On a piano it’s located in the middle of the keyboard and where many students first learn to play the piano.

So if music can be pleasant to listen to, what is noise?

Noise is defined as “Any sound that produces an unwanted disturbance of a person’s hearing.” Since the sound is “unwanted, does that mean it’s noise? Not necessarily, not everyone loved Rock and Roll music when they first heard it, some thought it was noise because it was loud, rhythmic and sometimes the performers screamed!

Sometimes your brain has to really work at figuring out the rhythms, melodies and harmonies of the different sounds you’re listening to. When you can hear those patterns in the sounds, that can be the difference between what one person calls “music” and the other calls it “noise”!

If you like the notes and rhythms of the sounds you’re listening to, then you can call it “music” to your ears.

What are some unusual musical instruments in the world?

Musical instruments can be divided into four main groups: percussion, string, wind and electronic instruments.

Percussion instruments like drums, tambourines or congas are some of the oldest and most often seen around in cultures around the world. Just about any object can be tapped, pounded or struck with sticks, in different tones and rhythms. It’s amazing what cool sounds you can make with empty 2L pop bottles or 5 gallon plastic buckets!

The key to making cool rhythms are in the repeatability of the percussion sounds, if the beats follow a pattern that a person recognizes or can feel, like the movement of a train, horse, car or your feet running, then the listeners will enjoy the music.

Some of the most unusual percussion instruments can sound like rain, frogs, even a musical saw!

There are over 100 different kinds of string instruments, some are plucked like a harp, some are strummed like a guitar and others are bowed like a violin. Most stringed instruments have been 4-12 strings, but some have only one while others have while the piano has over 200 inside!

In the movie Kubo and the Two Strings, the boy Kubo shows the power of both music and story played through the traditional Japanese stringed instrument called a Shamisen. As Kubo plucks the strings and tells his stories, he creates magical, origami samurai that fight on his command!

How can we see what music looks like?

We can build a Tonoscope!

Tonoscopes were first invented by a German musician and physicist Ernst Chlandi in 1787 when he would draw a violin bow on the edge of a metal plate covered in sand. The musical vibration would form beautiful shapes that were different for each note he played.

A “Tonoscope” is a simple machine that will show how sound forms different wave patterns. This machine demonstrates cymatics, the patterns that sound wave makes as they pass through air.

We can make our own tonoscope with a cardboard paper towel rolls, plastic bottle, balloon, rubberband, masking tape and some salt or sand.

Cut a hole in the bottom of plastic bottle or cup large enough to insert the paper towel roll, then tape the tube to the cup. Cut a balloon in half and cover the cup with the large half of the balloon.

Wrap a rubberband around the balloon at the top of the cup to keep it in place. Then run a ring of masking tape around the rim of the cup so at least ½ inch of the tape stands above the rim.

Pour some salt on top inside the ring of tape and then hum into the tube, in seconds the dancing salt will form amazing shapes and pictures!

How are masks an important part of drama world wide?

Drama and theater are represented with two masks: the face of tragedy & the face of comedy, because the drama of life falls between happiness and sadness.

Masks have been used for all kinds of theater and rituals around the world for thousands of years. The oldest known mask ever discovered by archeologists near the city of Jerusalem is over 9000 yrs old, even then we had smiley faces!

Neolithic stone mask from the MusĂŠe Bible et Terre Sainte Masks can be all kinds of shapes, sizes, faces, animals or monsters. When we wear a mask we can become an entirely different person or thing, we can be a monster, or eagle, or smiling child or grumpy old man.

Let’s make your own theater mask, that you can use to write and perform your own plays. All you need is an empty one gallon, plastic milk jug, scissors, elastic string and your imagination!

Empty and wash the milk jug with soap and water. Cut along the length of the back of the jug from the opening to the bottom. Cut the bottom off the jug, then cut strips along each side of the first vertical cut and curl them back to form “hair”. See the picture below. Keep the handle of the jug as the nose then cut out opening for the eyes and mouth and be creative in the shapes.

Use spray paint or acrylics to paint the mask into whatever you want, a tiger, a scary war mask or a Star Wars® Stormtrooper.

Can we solve math problems using music?

Did you know that music is all about fractions?

When we practice math problems using fractions we are solving problems about parts of a whole. Music is also about parts of a whole, it’s all about scales, which in Western music is an octave, a series of eight closely related notes.

When it’s written out on a chart it can look like this: This is a C Major scale, just like the diagram from the piano scale in the science section.

There are eight notes, some written on lines and others in the spaces between the lines. The two fours represent the rhythm or timing of the notes. Do you

see that it’s a fraction? It means there are four beats to each measure, the measure divides the scale in half with a vertical line.

So when we’re reading musical notes, we’re really reading fractions of sound waves and fractions of beats in a series!

How the fractions fit together can either make music to our ears, or noise when the notes don’t fit together well.

Let’s practice some musical math, where we convert our fractions into beats, see the chart below:

Dear Reader:A Hijab or headscarf is a veil or scarf worn in public by some Muslim women as an act of love and respect to their Creator, Allah. It is thought to be a symbol of a woman’s Islamic faith, much a like a flag or banner. All women were created beautiful and Islam encourages women to conceal their beauty.

It is believed, that the hijab protects the woman from being judged by the way she looks and for her to shine through with her wonderful personality and skills and not judged on what she looks like. My daughters rarely had moments in their early life where music wasn’t present. The rhythm of speech, the piano music I played, the lullabies my family members sang to them, and the recorded music played in the house and the car enveloped their everyday life. I have found that the benefits that can be gained by learning the language of music literally reach into almost every aspect of life. Forming friendships with fellow musicians while you collaborate together, learning to soothe and calm oneself down through playing or listening to music, and the pure enjoyment of making music are just a few benefits of becoming a musician. I knew as a mother I did not want to force my daughters to learn a musical instrument and be a part of music groups, I simply wanted them to choose to take advantage of those opportunities.

Both my husband Dan and myself came from musical families that supported our music education from an early age. Piano lessons, choir, and being a part of band programs during our school years prepared us both to sing collegiately and for myself, led me to major in music. We were thrilled to learn as young parents that Owatonna Public Schools has a strong tradition of educating their students in music beginning in elementary school and supporting musicians all the way through their high school years.

Our daughters Mariah (age 21) and Elena (age 18) took advantage of the Elementary School Choirs, Orchestras, Musicals, High School Choirs, Carolers, and community music concerts. All of those programs and opportunities were vital in shaping both girls as musicians and citizens.

Even though both Mariah and Elena were active learning to play string instruments and piano, they learned to budget their time to be involved in athletics, work hard in their academic classes, and be involved in their church and community. The

awesome thing about being a musician, is that you can also be an athlete, avid reader, mathematician, scientist, business person, or whatever else you can dream up or imagine. Through personal practice and scheduling rehearsals with small and large groups, a musician really has to think about the importance of time. As a parent, I saw the huge growth that both my daughters experienced as they learned to plan their daily schedule to incorporate rehearsals, practices, studying, and down time.

As an elementary music teacher, I often encourage my students by saying “learning music makes you smarter!” Connections that the brain makes while singing, playing, and reading music helps the brain focus when learning to speak, read, and problem solve. The time that I was able to share with my daughters when they were young, reading books and bouncing them on my lap was helping them learn how to feel a steady beat and hear the rhythm of lyrics. Having a dance party in the living room while all genres of music played, helped to show how music can be fun and therapeutic.

Exposing my daughters to music, singing and reading to them, encouraging and helping them while they individually learned to play instruments, and supporting their involvement in music groups were just a few ways that my daughter chose to be musicians. The friendships that have formed in my family’s life, travel opportunities, and the contentment we enjoy would not be as full and rich without music.

In the words of Shinichi Suzuki, “If children hear fine music from the day of their birth, and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline, and endurance.

They get a beautiful heart.”

The Magic of Christmas at a Rural School Many of you had grandparents who went to a school located in the rural area of the United States. Each school had one room with one teacher who taught children first grade through eighth grade all at the same time from 9:00 am to about 4:00 pm; recess and lunch were a part of the day.

Does your school have a holiday celebration? Do you ever wonder how your grandparents celebrated Christmas when they went to a rural school?

For many of your grandparents living in the country, the annual Christmas programs were the highlight of the year. Teachers would begin preparations in early November searching for new ideas as the success of the program raised or lowered the social status of the teacher. Each program would include several plays, half-dozen songs, and recitations involving all students from the school. It was the teacher’s responsibility to make sure all children were involved so parents, grandparents could see and hear their special youngster.

Play practice was sandwiched into small time slots throughout the day. As the performance drew near,

practice would become more frequent. Decorating the schoolroom was incorporated into art lessons; the children cut crepe streamers; new chalk board figures were designed and cut; and a tree was sawed from outdoors before being placed in a pail used as a make shift tree stand. Every year the tree was unique as shape dictated ornament placement; ornaments were made with paper, glitter, and paste. Children sang traditional carols, Santa would make an appearance, and every child would get a present during the program.

How magical this night was to children as everyone celebrated the magic of Christmas! Families oftentimes would come to school in the moonlight and walk as a family to the event. Life was uncomplicated during this time creating joy for children. How is this different from how you celebrate holidays at your school? Talk to your parents and grandparents about how traditions change over time.

h it w e iv t a e Getting Cr Nature There’s no better place to get creative than nature! Nature is full of items you can use for art, crafts, creating music and getting inspired. The following are just a couple of ideas of ways you can get creative in nature:

• Find some sticks and a hallow log and make some music by drumming the sticks on the log. Try different size sticks and logs and hear the different sounds they make.

• Get out your camera (your phone camera will do!) and take photos of all the beautiful things you can find in nature, including flowers, butterflies and leaves to name a few. The cool thing about taking pictures in nature is that no two pictures will be the same, things are always changing in nature!

• Create a snow sculpture. You can even get out in the winter and be creative! February is usually a great month to use the snow to create a sculpture a snowman, or a snow fort. The snow is usually stickier because of the typically warmer temperatures. The next time it snows get outside and give it a try!

• Create a nature craft. Nature is full of items you can use to create crafts. Check out the instructions below from I Heart Crafty Things to make an owl out of things you can find in nature.

How to Make a Stick Owl Craft for Kids Supplies: • • • • • • •

cardboard sticks leaves (we used dried out leaves but you could also use fresh) small round rocks chalk markers tacky glue scissors

Directions:

1. Start by cutting out the shape of an owl from your cardboard. Lay out your sticks on your cardboard shape, adjusting them to make them straight and break off or cutting any pieces to make them fit the shape.

2. Use your tacky glue to glue all of your sticks onto your cardboard. Then glue your leaves on for wings, your rocks for eyes and another small stick for a beak.

3. Use your Fun Chalk Markers to color in the eyes, the beak and to add some fun color and feather texture onto your owl craft.

Getting Crafty with Valentine’s Treats!

Make one of these fun treats with your family and enjoy!

Love Bug Fruit Cups Materials Needed: • Fruit cups • Red and white poster board (or cardstock paper) • Red or Black mini duck tape • Glue (Elmers or hot glue) • Black marker • Pipe Cleaners (optional) Directions: 1) Cut out two 1-inch hearts. Then tape or glue onto the bottom of the fruit cup.

2) Cut out 1/4 inch white circles for the eyes and draw a black circle inside. Alternatively, you could use googly eyes. Glue onto the front of the fruit cup.

3) If creating a lady bug, draw a line down the middle and then polka dots around the fruit cup.

4) Cut out a piece of tape about 2 inches long. Fold in half and then round off the top. Repeat with a second piece of tape. Tape or glue the two together on the bottom of the fruit cup to create the antennas. For an extra special touch, add two hearts to the top. Alternatively for the antennas - try a pipe cleaner!

Materials Needed: Pipe cleaners Paint/ Markers Valentine M&Ms Ziploc baggies Clothespin Googly eyes Glue

Directions: 1) Paint your clothes pins or decorate however you would like. My paint dried in less time than it took me to do the next step; these are very quick and fun to make!

2) Fill a snack bag 1/2 way with the m&m’s, tuck the zipper part under to hide it, and tie it with the pipe cleaner to secure it.

3) Place your dried clothespin around the bag and pipe cleaner, glue on googly eyes and shape the antennas however you would like!

Robot Valentine Snacks

Materials Needed: Pudding cups/applesauce cups/ jello cups Smarties Hi-C Juice Boxes Googly eyes Sharpies Chocolate hearts Hot glue gun

Directions: 1) Start from the bottom up! Glue the bottom of the juice box to the two chocolate hearts for the feet. Add the smarties for the arms and a heart on his chest so it says “Hi Love” hehe!

2) Finish off the robots with the pudding cup upsidedown and making a smiley face on him! Cute! If you want the kids to be able to eat the pudding, use a strong tape such as duct tape to attach it on top instead of glue.

Play Snap with traditional playing cards, or buy a set of themed Snap cards.

This game is great for a large group of children. You can use a standard set of playing cards, or any other set of cards with groups of 4, like Happy Family Cards.

Age: 3+ Players: 2-6 (best with 3 or more)

Deal out the cards around all the players, so each player has a pile of cards which they place face down.

The first player to go, turns over the card at the top of their pile, and starts a pile in the center.

The next person to their left turns over the card at the top of the pile and adds it to the center pile, and so on.

If there are two cards that match, the first player to yell ‘SNAP’ wins the cards in the middle.

If a player runs out of cards they lose.

Tips: Appoint a referee to rule in the event of disagreements about who called snap first!

You can also play so that players don’t just have to yell ‘snap’, but also be the first to put their hands on the center pile.

Age: 4+ Players: 4-13

Before play organize the cards into sets of 4, so that there is only one set of 4 cards for each player. For example if playing in a group of 4 you would have 16 cards.

Put the other cards to the side.

Shuffle the pack and deal 4 cards to each players.

Each player passes a one card to the player on their left at the same time as they receive one.

Players must passing cards. This should be done as fast as possible, so everyone gets into a rhythm.

As soon as a player manages to collect a set of 4 cards of one kind (for example 4 queens, or 4 sixes) this player stops passing their cards around and puts a finger on her nose.

The other players must race to notice, stop passing cards and put their fingers on their nose. The last player to put their finger on their nose is the pig.

There are countless different types of soups to choose from but one of the best things about soup is that you can be creative when cooking. Don’t like one of the ingredients in the recipe? Change it for something you do like! Have some leftover veggies or pasta in the fridge? Throw it

Taco Soup Makes 6 servings

in the pot with some broth, protein, seasonings, and more veggies and you have a meal ready in minutes!

Soup is also a meal that everyone can help make.

While parents are cooking the protein for the soup or cutting vegetables, kids can be opening cans or peeling vegetables with a kid-safe vegetable peeler.

Directions

1. Adults - In a large pot, cook ground beef until browned. Drain off fat. (If using beefless crumbles, cook per package directions.)

Ingredients

• 1 pound lean ground

beef (Make it meatless by leaving out the ground beef or substitute it with your favorite beefless crumble)

2. Kids - Open cans of beans, tomatoes, and corn.

• One 32 ounce package

reduced-sodium beef or vegetable broth

4. Adults - Bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat and let simmer, uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

• One 15-16 ounce can black

5. Serve with tortilla chips and enjoy!
