Heritage Days, which has been celebrating Faribault’s roots since 1983, is back

With carnivals, parades, dances and car shows, Faribault has celebrated its heritage since 1983 and with each year the city celebrates the variety of cultures and people who make up.

Even before the first Heritage Days festival, local tours were given of Faribault’s historical points of interest. Inspired by these tours, the Faribault Area Chamber of Commerce decided to center the theme of their new summer festival on Faribault’s history.

“We felt, ‘Let’s make it a city thing and get people to come to town’” said Fran Miller, Chamber president at the time. “We wanted to make it bigger than just a tour of local historical buildings.”

In 1982, the Faribault Community Festivals, Inc. was formed to organize the first ever Faribault Heritage Days, which was held in 1983 at the Alexander Faribault House on First Avenue NE. The buttons attendees bought to access the events each year are on display there as a tribute to the festival, which begins Wednesday and runs through Saturday.

With an abundance of nationalities represented in Faribault, Heritage Days highlighted one ethnic group in each of its first few years — creating a foundation of honoring one another that is carried on in this year’s festival. Along with ethnic-specific exhibits at the Rice County Historical Society Museum and decorations on the vehicles in the parades, events were held to celebrate the ethnic group chosen to be honored at that year’s festival.

In 1984, Heritage Days paid tribute to those of German heritage with tours of German churches, including Trinity Lutheran, St. Lawerence Catholic Church and the Chapel of the Good Shepherd on the campus of ShattuckSt. Mary School. A farmers market was also held with German crafts and foods.

In 1985, people of French descent were celebrated with a French Mass and French foods.

1986 highlighted Norwegian heritage with Norwegian songs, folk dances, food, folk art exhibits, and a tour of churches with Norwegian backgrounds including Bethel Lutheran Church, Our Savior’s Lutheran, North Grove Lutheran, Ephphatha Church and First English Lutheran.

the 1862 Dakota Conflict which included a pipe ceremony led by Spiritual Leader Amos Owen, Upper Sioux Singers, Prairie Island Singers, Bear Creek Singers, and dancers from the Native American Center of S.E. Minnesota.

In 1988, people of Irish descent were feted with an Irish mural created by a fourth-grade class from Jefferson Elementary School, a bagpipe performance and dances performed by the Knockragow Irish Dancers.

Heritage Days of 1898 celebrated Czechoslovakian heritage with a singing of the Czech and Slovak national anthems by members of the Czechoslovakian Gymnastic Cultural Organiza-

tion of St. Paul along with Czech foods, and performances from Czech singers and dancers.

Joining the state of Minnesota in the Celebrate Minnesota festivities, Faribault’s Heritage Days of 1990 honored the city of home to people of many cultural backgrounds.

Since then, Faribault’s Heritage Days festival has honored the Dutch in 1991, the Italian in 1992, the Polish in 1993, the Swedish in 1994, and the English in 1995. Today the festival is a celebration of all the histories that are woven into the tapestry of Faribault.

This year’s festival

Heritage Days 2019 begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Central Park with an opening ceremony including a flag raising by Central Vets. A Family Night of karaoke, inflatables, gaga ball and other activities will follow, from 7 to 10 p.m., also at Central Park.

The carnival in Central Park opens Wednesday and runs from 5 to 10 p.m. It’s also open

Thursday from 5 to 11 p.m., Friday from 3 p.m. to midnight and Saturday from noon to 10 p.m.

Starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, there will be a concert at Central Park by The 8th Street Band.

From 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Main Street Car Show will be held in downtown Faribault.

The Grand Parade starts at 6 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Second Avenue NW and 13th Street and will end at Central Park. The grand marshal this year is Sam Temple, co-creator

of the documentar y series “1855” and this year’s Citizen of the Year, and the Milestone Business is KDHL Radio.
