Built 1862–1869, it is the oldest cathedral in Minnesota. yesteryear
The city of Faribault was founded by French-Canadian fur trader Alexander Faribault. He established trading posts at several locations along the Cannon River upon arriving in the area in 1826. By 1835, a permanent post was built in the current city of Faribault, which is the Rice County seat. Faribault is home to one of the first wood-frame houses in the territory, which still stands and is open for tours. A statue of Faribault and Chief Taopi by local artist Ivan Whillock stands in Heritage Park, along the beautiful bluffs of the Straight River near downtown. Faribault is renowned for its educational facilities, which include the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind, and Shattuck-St. Mary’s School,
in addition to well-supported public and parochial schools. Through the years, Faribault has depended on mills, breweries, agriculture and manufacturing. Manufacturing is still a strong part of the economy in the city today. Featuring home grown to hightech, Faribault is an industrial hub and is home to several international companies. To delve more deeply into the area’s history, the Rice County Historical Museum is a good stop. There you’ll learn about the city’s early days, the stunning Episcopal cathedral, and Minnesota Gopher Heisman Trophy winner, Faribault’s Bruce Smith.

Shaping American Stories
High quality education for all is a long-standing tradition in Faribault. Area families have strong public, private and charter school options for Kindergarten through High School age students. South Central College is part of the Minnesota State system and offers two-year Associate Degree and Transfer programs, Technical Career and Professional programs and Workforce Development services. Minnesota State Academies for the Deaf and Blind are highly respected centers of education for members of those communities. Shattuck-St. Mary’s is a worldrenowned boarding high school that has attracted attention for its academics and its Centers of Excellence.
Minnesota State Academies for the Deaf & Blind Minnesota became a state on May 11, 1858. In that year, during the session of the first state legislature, definite action was taken looking toward the establishment of a school for the deaf children of Minnesota. The Honorable George E. Skinner, one of Faribault’s representatives in the state legislature, asked 507-334-4381 or 800-653-2354
that a “deaf and dumb asylum” be located in Faribault. The legislature decided that this institution should be located in Faribault if the citizens of the town would provide 40 acres of land within two miles of town for a site. The academies are still in operation today and are highly respected centers of education.
Shattuck – St. Mary’s School In 1858, The Rev. Dr. James Lloyd Breck established the Episcopal mission school and seminary from which Shattuck-St. Mary’s School has developed and prospered. In the last decade, SSM has attracted national attention in areas the school refers to as “Centers of Excellence,” namely ice hockey, soccer, figure skating, golf, and the arts. PROTEST
Staying informed about local news is more important than ever.
By MISTY SCHWAB
misty.schwab@apgsomn.com
As a response to the murder of George Floyd and the social activism spawned by the Minneapolis tragedy, Kent Freeze wanted to get the local community talking. A Faribault Diversity Coalition board member and professor at Carleton College, Freeze Freeze wanted to launch the F D C d i v e rsity book club because of his own interest in learning more about topics in diversity and Simons issues around racial injustices. “For me, it’s a learning experience,” Freeze said. “I’m facilitating it but in no way an expert … It’s always been an issue I’ve been passionate about, but I realize there’s a gap in my own understanding.” After taking the summer to plan, the FDC hosted its first virtual book club meeting in September. Since then, a group of six to eight individuals has met from 7 to 8 p.m. the third Thursday of each month to discuss the reading material and how it relates to diversity in Faribault. “We’ve read fiction, nonfiction, memoirs and graphic novels, so a variety of different mediums exploring the topic of diversity,” Freeze said. “And we’re trying to have a lens to help us reflect on diversity in Faribault, trying to keep it local in a sense. Many of the books are centered in the Midwest to keep the focus and discussion on ‘What are the issues we see arising in diversity? How do we manage living in a diverse community?’ and ‘What understanding do we need to bridge divides across different groups in the community?’ as well.” So far, book group members have read and discussed nonfiction titles like “How to Be an Anti-Racist” by Ibram X. Kendi and “White Fragility: Why it’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism” by Robin DiAngelo. This month, the book selection is a recently published memoir, “Somewhere in the Unknown World: A Collective Refugee Memoir” by Kao Kalia Yang, which focuses on refugees who settled in the Twin Cities. Another locally focused book the group discussed, “A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota,” is a collection of essays by 16 Minnesota writers, edited by Sun Yung Shin.
That’s why we deliver the Faribault Daily News to meet your schedule.

Southern Minnesotans protest Line 3
By ASHLEY REZACHEK
ashley.rezachek@apgsomn.com
The replacement of a pipeline in northern Minnesota has people across the state concerned for a variety of reasons. In solidarity with folks hundreds of miles north of southern Minnesota,, local residents have also been making their voices heard and taking action. About two years ago a group of con-
cerned Northfield area residents organized a collective known as Northfield Against Line 3 (NAL3). Since then they have made efforts to stop or slow the pipeline’s construction, pointing to environmental issues, treaty rights, climate change and human trafficking concerns among other concerns with the project.

Businesses push for tax fix for PPP loans
By ANNIE GRANLUND
annie.granlund@apgsomn.com
When small businesses across the country shutdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government tossed out a lifeline in the form of loans-turnedforgivable grants. Through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, the federal government established the Paycheck Protection Program for small businesses suffering losses during the pandemic. If PPP loan proceeds were used for qualifying costs and 60% of the loan proceeds were used for payroll costs, the federal government then forgave the loan. “This was a pretty huge piece
Meier
Jasinski
of the puzzle for a lot of businesses that were shut down,” said Brad Meier, president of the Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, noting the program was offered to businesses last spring and again at the end of the year. “When the last federal stimulus passed at the end of the year, they clarified that the federal government is not going to tax those PPP dollars, which is really
good news for business.” However, unless Minnesota conforms to federal tax law, Meier said these forgivable loans will still be taxed in Minnesota. According to the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, more than 100,000 businesses throughout the state participated in the PPP loan program. Without this change to the state tax law, small and midsized businesses could face further tax burdens. “PPP loans were emergency funds to help local businesses survive the pandemic,” said state Sen. John Jasinski (R-Faribault). “Even with that assistance, many of them are still in dire situations. The last thing they need is any additional tax burden.”
CALL TO ACTION The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce call to action alert on forgiving PPP loan taxes can be found at bit. ly/2NxcsKh The site provides a template for contacting the governor and state legislators.
Meier echoed Jasinski’s sentiments, stating that every bit of help the state can give to businesses is vital as the pandemic continues. He added that as business owners are starting to prepare to file their 2020 taxes, the time to address and make the change is now. “Time is of the essence and with that something needs to happen sooner rather than later,” Meier
said. “If (the Legislature) waits and passes it later in the year it would create a retroactive deal where business owners would have to refile or do something additional with their future taxes. That would just cause additional confusion, so we’re asking that the state cleans it up and takes care of it now.”
