Wikipedia defines harvesting as ‘the process of gathering a ripe crop from the fields … and thus the end of the growing season, or the growing cycle for a particular crop.’ Living in southern Minnesota, harvesting is a noticeable time for all, as fields are bustling with activity.

In Owatonna, we have a large farming community, which also includes many of our Owatonna Public School staff. This past year, the University of Minnesota announced that the Glenn Johnson family as the 2019 Farm Family of the Year. Glenn and Deb Johnson

started their farming careers in 1979 by purchasing the family farm where Glenn grew up. Deb McDermott-Johnson is also the Director of Community Education for Owatonna Public Schools.

The Johnson’s currently milk 70 cows with 90 heifers in residence on the farm as well. The operation leases 220 crop acres and grows its own alfalfa haylage, corn silage and dry hay.

The family is very supportive of dairy promotion activities including twice hosting Steele County Breakfast on the Farm

events, providing animals for community events, and for the local FFA barnyard. Glenn and Deb have hosted Cow Camp for 12 years. Cow Camp is a hands-on experience for young people to learn about life on a dairy farm. It is hosted every summer for youth and can be found in the Owatonna Public Schools- Community Education summer brochure.

Clover Glen Farms has been the site of many educational field trips involving Owatonna High School, Ridgewater College as well as North Dakota and South Dakota state universities.

Our farm is called the Seykora Dairy Farm.

How long has your family been farming?

We have been farming for 20 years.

What can we find on your farm?

On our farm, we grow soybeans, corn, and alfalfa. We also have dairy cows that need to be milked two times a day.

What is your favorite vegetable?

My favorite vegetable to eat is Corn on the Cob. When you think of the word ‘harvesting’ what does that mean to you?

Harvest on the Seykora Farm marks the end of the growing season and the beginning of hard work to gather the corn and soybeans. We use a big machine called a combine to pick the corn and harvest the soybeans. Both crops are stored in bins until they are needed to feed the cows or to sell at the grain elevator.

Favorite memory of living on the farm?

My favorite memory of living on the farm is the first year I experienced the fall harvest! It was amazing to see how corn and soybeans were combine.

How long has your family been farming? Our farm has been in our family since 1910, so we have been farming the same land for 109 years. We were recognized as a Century Farm in 2010.

We are a fourth and fifth-generation farming operation.

What can we find at your farm? We raise corn, soybeans, wheat, sweet corn and peas.

We also have beef cattle on the farm.

What is your favorite vegetable? Sweet corn and peas.

When you think of the word ‘harvesting’ what does that mean to you?

Harvesting is an exciting time when you get to see the results of your hard work. It is a time where you recognize that your crops will be going to feed people and livestock. It affirms that your hard work has made a positive difference.

Pumpkins are members of the squash family and are one of the oldest foods ever grown by human beings. They’re native to North America in the region of northern Mexico. There’s archeological evidence of people growing and eating pumpkins as far back as 6000 BC!

All squash are large fruits that have a hollow space inside where the seeds grow. Pumpkins have the largest hollow core, which leads to the question, can pumpkins float? Grab a small

pumpkin and a bucket of water. Make a hypothesis on if your pumpkin will sink or float? What do you think will happen to your pumpkin? Record your results.

With your parents help, cut four pieces of pumpkin and place in a plastic container.

Next, decide different conditions you can test with your pumpkin to see how it will decompose.

An example could be: Pumpkin Container #1: Place ¼ cup of water in the container with your pumpkin.

Pumpkin Container #2: Place ¼ cup of dirt in the container with your pumpkin.

Pumpkin Container #3: Place the container in the fridge.

Pumpkin Container #4: This is your control pumpkin… simply place it on the counter.

Do you want to make your carved pumpkin even more scary?!

Try dehydrating it in the oven!

To dehydrate something means to remove all the water, since pumpkin store lots of water in their cells, cooking them at a low heat can cause the water to steam out of the pumpkin leaving the dried husk behind. This is the same way dried fruit or beef jerky is made.

You’ll need to rub salt all over the inside of the pumpkin after you’ve carved it, then place it inside the oven and cook at low heat, around 250 degrees, for about 1 hour or more. The amount of time depends on the size of the pumpkin, the larger the pumpkin, the longer the time needed to dehydrate it.

The tools of profession pumpkin carvers require careful planning, precision cutting and using the right tools for the right cuts.

To carve the best Jack-o-Lantern, means engineering using both engineering and art to create the coolest sculpture ever. What do you notice about the proper tools for carving a pumpkin?

Notice that the tools have serrated edges, this means that they work like little saws to carefully cut the squishy pumpkin meat. Some tools can drill holes, others can carve smooth curves and others straight lines. Experiment with different

tools to find the best for carving your pumpkin sculpture. Make sure you work with your parents, you may need permission and help with some tools.

But before carving it’s important to draw out the plan, drawn the face on paper first and then color in the areas that need to be cut out, the remaining areas are left in place. When the candle light shines through the pumpkin, it’s the shadows that create the image of the different faces in the Jack-O-Lantern!

So keep in mind how to use light and shadow to create a face, a story or even words. When you draw your design with a permanent marker, color the areas to cut out black.. That will remind you what to cut out and what parts to leave behind.

Bring math fun into your fall family traditions. When cleaning the pumpkin out there are a lot of seeds!

How many are there, on average? What would happen if every pumpkin seed from one pumpkin germinated and grew into a new plant? How many pumpkin plants would grow from a single pumpkin? If every seed grew into a new pumpkin plant, would you entire yard be covered with pumpkin plants?

Well, since pumpkins reproduce with seeds, let’s see how many seeds are inside, there are different ways to figure this out, some using our hands and the other way is using math, let’s find out.

Most pumpkins produce about 10-15 seeds for each section or rib on the pumpkin. So the bigger the pumpkin doesn’t always mean it’ll have more seeds.

See how many different sections or rib a pumpkin has.

Count them by sticking tacks or putting stickers on each segment. Then multiply the number of sections by 10, this is our estimate of how many seeds may be inside. An estimate is our prediction that’s based on mathematical calculation, it’s a really good guess.

Pumpkin has 38 sections (ribs) x 10 seeds per section = 380 seeds Next is to test our estimate by scooping out all the seeds, washing off the orange strands, rinsing with water and allow them to dry. Soaking in salt water and then baking the seeds makes a delicious crunchy treat, just like sunflower seeds!

How to count them? You can try counting one by one, but you’ll need to count a few times because it’s difficult to get the same number twice. Try putting the seeds into groups of 10, then count the groups of 10 and add the leftovers, which you can put into groups of 2’s or 5’s. This is the most accurate way to count a large number of objects. Then compare how many you collected to how many you estimated would be inside and see how close you guessed. I bet you were within 20 seeds in estimating correctly.

To practice getting more accurate with your estimate, try changing the number you multiply each section by, for example, try using 11, or 12, or 15 seeds per section and see which of these is closer to the number

of seeds you collected from your pumpkin! Next, pick two or three different paint colors and paint the segments. Work on fractions to determine how many of each color are represented on your pumpkin.

Dear Reader: Making new friends is exciting and scary all at the same time. The best thing to do is make sure you start to talk to others in your class. If you don’t know someone very well, ask them what they like to do outside of school… do they play sports, sing, play an instrument?

Getting someone to talk about their favorite hobbies and activities is a great way to get to know someone.

At lunch or recess when you see friends from other classes, it can be easy to run to them and want to play with them… but don’t forget about your new friends you’re making. Introduce everyone and try to find things you can all do together during recess. Ask friends from other classes who they are meeting as well and pretty soon you’ll have a great group of friends to hang out with at lunch, recess or outside of school.

Dear Izzy: Halloween is right around the corner, where can I go to find some great ideas for costumes?

Dear Reader: The stores are starting to put out their fall decorations now, so it’s a great time to start to think of what you want to be or do for Halloween. You can ask your parents to start to look through the Halloween section at stores like Target, Walmart and even the Salvation Army for ideas… or maybe you’ll even find the perfect item. If you don’t feel like spending a lot of money, you can find great ideas by doing a Halloween costume search on your computer. If your parents have a Pinterest account that is also a great place to search and find some great DIY costumes.

Some of my favorite Halloween costumes have been the years that my Mom and I sit down and brainstorm together on what I should be.

I love to think of group costumes that I can do either with my siblings or friends. Last year my friends and I were all different donuts and we had just as much fun making our DIY donuts as we did wearing them on Halloween night.

Dear Reader: The beginning of the school year can be challenging as you practice things you learned from last year and start to add new information. You also have a new teacher who may be different from your last year’s teacher in the way they teach or communicate.

With all of these new things starting, you have to remind yourself to take a deep breathe and ask for help when you need it. If you don’t understand something, make sure to ask them for help right away. The longer you wait on asking your question the longer it may take for you to understand… and that can get frustrating!

Remember that you need to have a growth mindset… you just don’t understand the material YET…after some practice and time, you’ll be at a much better place than from where you started.

When you talk to your teacher, you can also talk to them about if that assignment/test is something you can re-do to see if you are understanding the material better. It never hurts to ask!

5) Prepare to have fun – We put a lot of planning into this event to make it so much fun for you! There’s so much to do and it’s a fun Halloween-themed afternoon! We hope you make it to the Trick or Treat Trail and have so much FUN!

Do you like jam, jelly, pickles, sauces, jerky and other foods from cans, jars and other packages? Foods are available to us all year around because of the age-old art of FOOD PRESERVATION! Food preservation has been happening since the age of the caveman when they discovered that hanging meat, roots, and vegetables from the cave ceiling made the foods last longer as their cooking fires dried the food. Salts and brines were developed as time passed, adding another method of preserving food.

Now, fruits, vegetables and meats of all kinds are in the grocery stores and available all year around. Some folks still like to preserve their own food, creating salsas, picked cucumbers, green beans and asparagus, as well as apple sauce, peaches, berries and vegetables.

We have inherited a legacy and it’s hoped to continue to create the art of preserved foods for future generations.

It’s a taste of history!

The late 1800s found Ball and Kerr Companies manufacturing canning jars to be used to preserve fruits, vegetables and meat.

Mostly wealthy people used the jars, but later they became available to the regular folks. It was important to preserve a lot of a family’s own food raised in gardens and barns by canning, drying, salting and curing in brine (vinegar, salt and sugar mixture) for the months of the year when fresh produce and meat was not available.

In addition to canning, freezing food is a good way to keep food almost as fresh as before frozen.

Back to School Success It’s that time of year again – school starts this month! Hopefully you are excited to see your friends, meet your teachers and learn great stuff. It can be a little difficult getting back into a good school routine after a summer of sleeping in, though.

Here are a couple tips Dr. Ann to keep you at your Sneiders best this year.

1. Eat breakfast!! This one is really, really important. After being asleep for 8-10 hours, your brain needs food to get going! A great breakfast would be oatmeal, strawberries or other fruit, and a glass of milk. Whatever you like to eat in the morning is OK, though! If you like cold pizza or a granola bar, that’s fine. Even donuts and poptarts are better than nothing.

Be sure to have at least a small glass of milk, water, or juice with whatever you eat and drink water throughout the school day, too.

2. Get enough sleep – another big one. Turn all screens off at least 30 min before you go to bed. This means TVs, ipads, computers and phones.

The light from the screens keeps your brain awake – this is scientifically proven – your mom isn’t making this up. Leave your screens in another room if you will be tempted to use them in bed. Instead of screens, read a book, do a puzzle, take a bath or shower or do some coloring or other quiet activity that you enjoy. Aim for at least 8 hours of sleep each night – some kids need 10-12 hours.

3. Relax and burn off steam after school every day (also called exercise). After hours of stretching your mind, it’s time to stretch your body!

Ride your bike, play outside with your friends, take your dog for a walk, etc.

Get an hour of exercise every day – even if you have gym class in school.

4. Homework – time it right!

Sometimes after school activities get

in the way, but after you’ve let off steam, it’s time to do homework. Get it done before supper and you will have the evening to do fun things.

Find a quiet spot at home and make that your homework spot. Stock it with pencils, markers, snacks, headphones if you need them, and a charger for your school ipad or computer.

Then make it a routine and get to it!

5. Bullying – this may never happen to you, but if someone is saying or doing mean things to you, first ignore them and second, tell an adult.

Bullies may seem big and strong, but they actually feel very small inside. If you ignore them and walk away, you take away their reason for picking on you. Telling a teacher or other adult is not tattling – it’s just smart. If you don’t say something, the bully might just start pestering your best friend!

Step one: Draw some spooky faces (or not so spooky faces) on your milk jugs using your black marker

Step two: Color in the faces.

Step three: Using the craft knife (mom), cut a hole in the lower backside of the jug. about the size of a half dollar).

Step four: Line all of your ghosts up and stuff several lights in each one.

Step five: Place your group of glowing spirit jugs along your walkway or front porch to welcome those cute little holiday guests.

You could also use battery operated lights if you wanted to spread them out all over your yard. The nice part about them all being hooked together with the Christmas lights though is all you have to do is plug the cord into one outlet and you are in business!!

Taking turns, each player closes his eyes and touches a pencil to the paper. He is awarded the number of points marked on the section he touched. Once a section has been touched, cross it out

If you touch a crossed out section or go outside the circle, you don’t get any points that turn and must wait for your next turn. If someone hits the exact center, he automatically wins. How to make a button tree

This fun button art craft is sure to be a hit for kids of all ages (just keep a close eye on younger children who might be tempted to put them in their mouth!)!

Supplies: 1 blank canvas (pick any size you like) Paint to make the tree Paint brush(es) Tacky Glue A variety of buttons

1 Begin by choosing your design and painting an image on to a blank canvas.

Collect your buttons and put them into a large pile. This step can also serve as a fantastic lesson about sorting by shape, size and color for younger children.

Use a small amount of Tacky Glue to attach the buttons to the canvas.

Continue adding buttons until you are satisfied with the way it looks. You can even choose to layer buttons upon buttons for extra dimension! Allow glue to dry thoroughly before hanging.

Ingredients • 5 cups Rice Krispie cereal • 1/4 cup butter • 4 cups mini marshmallows • 1 large bag M&M candies • multiple colors red, blue, green, yellow cookie decorator icing

Instructions 1. Pour Rice Krispie cereal into a large mixing bowl. Set aside.

2. Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat. Once butter is melted, pour in mini marshmallows and stir constantly until marshmallows are completely melted and smooth.

3. Pour marshmallows over Rice Krispies and stir together until completely mixed together.

4. Scoop Rice Krispies into a lightly grease 9x13 pan. Press down using a piece of wax or parchment paper until flattened. Let cool completely before proceeding. You can pop them in the fridge for 5 minutes to speed up the cooling.

5. While the Rice Krispies are cooling, separate out the M&Ms into colors that match the icing you are using. You will need 6 of the same color per Lego Krispie.

6. Cut Rice Krispies into 18 rectangles. Squeeze some of the icing into a bowl. Dip the top of the Rice Krispie treat into the icing and use a butter knife to smooth it out. Place M&Ms on top in parallel rows of 3 while icing is still wet. Repeat with remaining Rice Krispie treats in varying colors of icing.

TIPS: Cool your rice krispies completely before cutting.

Make sure the tops of your rice krispies are as even and flat as possible Use one color of icing at a time because the icing will harden quickly.

Spread the icing gently with a knife, but don’t add too much icing as it may spill over the edges.

Place the M&Ms “m” side down so that the “m” doesn’t show.

MINI CORN DOG MUFFINS Yield: 12 Servings

If you love corn dogs, you’re going to love this mini corn dog muffins recipe! These corn dog muffins are a crowd-pleaser, especially with kids.

And they make a great football-watching snack for all of those big games!

Ingredients 1/2 cup melted butter (or 1/4 cup butter + 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce)

Instructions: 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Whisk together butter and sugar.

1/2 cup sugar

3. Add buttermilk and continue to whisk together.

2 eggs

4. In a separate bowl, combine baking soda, cornmeal, flour, and salt, and stir to combine.

Whisk into wet ingredients in two batches.

1 cup buttermilk 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup cornmeal 1 cup all purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 8-10 all-beef hot dogs, cut into 1” bites (Pictured are Open Nature brand nitrate free all beef hot dogs)

2. Add eggs and stir well.

5. IMPORTANT: Be sure to first spray a mini muffin tin with non-stick spray (or use a silicone muffin pan), and then spoon 1 tablespoon of batter into each mini muffin cup.

6. Place one hot dog bite into the middle of each muffin cup.

7. Bake for 8-12 minutes at 375 degrees or until cornbread is golden brown.

8. Cool in mini muffin tin for 5 minutes before serving. Makes around 36 mini corn dog muffins.
