SPRING SUMMER 2026 | 01

SPRING BY THE NUMBERS OUR SEASONAL STATS

Spring arrives slowly in Fargo. After months of limited daylight and dormant landscapes, the first signs of life feel earned. In tandem with Mother Nature’s spring awakening, is months of planning, years of stewardship, and a relatively small group of people doing an extraordinary amount of work. Every bloom, every shaded path, and every restored acre is a balance of science, labor, patience, and care. These numbers show the scale of that effort, and tell the story of the work required to protect the parks our community relies on each year.

GROWING HEALTHY HABITATS

29 POLLINATOR GARDENS Designed, planted and maintained to support bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators, these gardens strengthen local ecosystems and help sustain the plant life our parks and wildlife depend on. 70,000 ANNUAL FLOWERS PLANTED Annual flowers are planted throughout parks and public spaces to support pollinators, enhance seasonal color, and create welcoming, well-cared-for environments for the community. 70+ NATIVE PRAIRIE PLANT SPECIES Native prairie plants support pollinators, improve soil health, reduce erosion, and require fewer resources once established, making them both resilient and efficient.

SPRING SUMMER 2026 | 02

RESTORING LAND AND BUILDING RESILIENCE 225 ACRES RESTORED AND MANAGED Prairie and wetland areas are actively managed to control invasive species, protect native plants, support wildlife habitat, and maintain ecological balance across the park system. 600 TREES PLANTED New trees are planted to expand canopy coverage, provide wildlife shelter, reduce urban heat, manage stormwater, improve air quality, and build long-term resilience across the park system. 200 TREE VARIETIES Biodiversity in our parks is intentionally cultivated to reduce the risk of disease and pests, strengthen ecosystems, improve air and water quality, and create healthier green spaces for the community.

POWERED BY PEOPLE 9 FULL-TIME STAFF A core team of year-round staff provides planning, oversight, and long-term stewardship for planting, restoration, monitoring, and maintenance across Fargo’s park system. 45 SEASONAL STAFF Seasonal staff expand capacity during peak months, helping carry out large-scale planting, restoration, and maintenance work across the city. 750+ VOLUNTEER HOURS EACH YEAR Contributed by more than 500 community members, these hours support planting, cleanup, and stewardship efforts that significantly expand the reach of conservation work across Fargo’s parks.

SUPPORTING WILDLIFE & BIODIVERSITY 140 MONARCHS TAGGED IN 2025 Monarch tagging contributes to regional migration research, helping scientists track population health and better understand the challenges facing this iconic species.

200 BIRD SPECIES IDENTIFIED At Forest River and Orchard Glen alone, bird diversity reflects the health of local habitats and the success of long-term conservation and land management practices.

PARK STORIES | 03

Playing the Long Game 100 YEARS OF EDGEWOOD GOLF COURSE Edgewood has spent a century evolving alongside Fargo. What began in 1926 as a modest five-hole public course is now an 18-hole, par-71 layout shaped by oak-lined fairways, river-adjacent land, and a walkable design that encourages players to experience the course as part of the landscape itself. Though firmly within the city, Edgewood has long felt set apart, a place where the land sets the pace. Over time, the course has adapted to changing eras of play, environmental realities, and shifting expectations of public space. What follows is a walk through Edgewood’s past, decade by decade, responding to changing expectations of recreation, land use, and public space.

1930s - 1940s

1926

A PUBLIC COURSE TAKES ROOT When Edgewood opened in 1926, golf was informal and deeply tied to the land itself. Players walked the course, carried minimal equipment, and terrain dictated play. Built as a modest five-hole public course, Edgewood welcomed Fargo residents at twenty-five cents for three rounds or 15 holes.

SPRING SUMMER 2026 | 04

ENDURANCE THROUGH UNCERTAINTY As the Great Depression and World War II reshaped daily life, recreation across the country became simpler and more practical. Edgewood remained a steady presence during these years, offering an affordable, familiar place for movement and leisure when both were increasingly scarce. In 1938, even amid limited resources, the Manning Memorial Shelter was built, reinforcing a commitment to public spaces that extended beyond play into care and community gathering.

1970s 1950s - 1960s

LEISURE AND YOUTH TAKE THE TEE Postwar prosperity welcomed recreation back, and golf grew alongside it. Equipment evolved, organized play increased, and junior tournaments began shaping the next generation of players. Edgewood reflected this shift, hosting junior competitions and cultivating early talent. In 1956, a teenage Jack Nicklaus played in a tournament at Edgewood, underscoring how our local courses could serve the broader golf landscape.

A LANDSCAPE COMES INTO FOCUS As environmental awareness gained momentum nationwide, golf course design began to reckon more intentionally with land, water, and ecology. Edgewood’s oak-lined fairways and proximity to the Red River were no longer just features of the terrain. They became central to the identity of the course, shaping how it was experienced and cared for as both a recreational space and a natural one.

1980s - 1990s

A PLACE PASSED DOWN By the late twentieth century, Edgewood had become deeply generational. Daily tee times, leagues, and lessons created routines that spanned decades, even as the landscape itself was periodically challenged. The 1997 flood tested the course and the community around it, yet longtime players returned season after season, some well into their nineties, forming relationships not only with the fairways but with one another. Edgewood endured as a shared reference point, passed down through families and friendships.

SPRING SUMMER 2026 | 06

2000s LIVING WITH THE RIVER In a city shaped by the Red River, water is both a resource and a challenge. Flooding, including the 2009 event, forced a reevaluation of how land should be used and protected. At Edgewood, flood mitigation altered multiple holes, added a pond, and included restoration work that emphasized long-term resilience. Edgewood was named the region’s best golf course both in 2007 and 2008, affirming that environmental adaptation and course quality could coexist.

2026 81 80 40‘

ONE HUNDRED YEARS A century after its opening, Edgewood stands not as a preserved artifact, but as a living landscape shaped by changing norms, natural forces, and community care. Its longevity reflects a simple truth: public places prosper when they endure change, and when communities continue to show up for them.

2020s 2010s INVESTMENTS AND RECOGNITION The 2010s marked a period of deliberate reinvestment at Edgewood. Continued flood mitigation strengthened the course’s long-term stability, while thoughtful improvements modernized facilities without altering the character of the land. In 2019, a new practice facility with varied slopes and lies was added, along with a memorial honoring Judge Rodney Webb, reflecting an approach focused on continuity rather than reinvention.

DISTANCE AND DEMAND As the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns began in the spring of 2020, golf surged as a naturally distanced, outdoor activity. New players arrived, longtime golfers returned, and the increased use continued well beyond the initial lockdown season. That renewed demand, paired with the opening of Edgewood Tavern, marked a period of reinvestment that reaffirmed the course as a vital public space.

Tatiana EVENTS SUPERVISOR

A DAY IN THE LIFE This glimpse behind the scenes of Midwest Kid Fest in Island Park comes from a conversation with Tatiana, whose years of experience shape every part of the day. From months of preparation and early-morning safety checks to brief interactions with families once the event is underway, her work reflects intention, care, and steady focus.

EARLY MORNING Tatiana’s first stop is a walk through Island Park with the document that guides the day. “This is my event manual,” Tatiana says. “It has all my thoughts, checklists, and procedures written down.” Every detail of the day, from booth placement to breakdown, lives in its pages, freeing her to focus on what unfolds in real time. Before the park fills with activity, she ensures her work behind the scenes has come together. When staff and vendors arrive, the park is already set, quietly signaling where to go and shaping the rhythm of the day.

MIDDAY She stays alert for potential issues while allowing herself brief moments to step back and watch the event in motion beneath the Island Park canopy. “It’s amazing to see different walks of life coming together,” she says. “Watching kids get excited about their favorite performers never gets old.” Tatiana continues supporting staff and making judgment calls as needed. Experience guides her here, helping her recognize when to step in and when to let the flow of the event carry on. For her, success is when families feel safe, supported, and at ease.

SHOWTIME As vendors, partners, and staff arrive, the park begins to change.

ENDING THE DAY Even after the last family heads to their car, the work continues.

Tatiana rotates through each area, paying closest attention to timing and safety. Radios crackle as staff check in from across the park and by the time families begin arriving, the work of many hands has created something that feels organized, calm, and ready.

Cleanup begins right away as teams move through the park, helping vendors pack up and restoring the space piece by piece.

a Friese “The hardest part is wanting to be in four places at once,” Tatiana says. “Event days can get hectic, so flexibility and clear communication matter more than anything.”

With the preparation complete, she keeps an eye on how families move through the park, checks in with staff, and responds as the day unfolds.

“We have the most amazing job because of what we get to do for our community. It is rewarding and fulfilling, and there’s something for everyone to be involved in.” When asked to sum up her job in one sentence, she doesn’t hesitate. “I help turn public spaces into places where people can connect, have fun, and make memories together.”

“Once the event is up and running,” she says, “I can finally take a breath.”

PARK STORIES | 09

Walking Toward Jamie Selzler didn’t start walking because he had a plan. He started walking because Fargo’s parks gave him a place where he could begin without being watched, measured, or expected to perform. In the early days, progress looked like short distances and frequent stops. Benches served as a lifeline on quieter paths like in Forest River Park, where pausing didn’t draw attention. Parks enabled Jamie to move at his own pace, to stop when he needed to, and to come back the next day without carrying the weight of the one before it. Those walks became part of a larger change for Jamie in 2022. With the support of medication and months of steady movement, Jamie would eventually lose more than 360 pounds. But the walking came first, not as a strategy, but as something he could return to day after day. “I didn’t start walking to change everything,” Jamie says. “I started walking because I needed something I could actually physically do.”

ONE STEP AT A TIME When Jamie first began, he gravitated toward spaces that felt straightforward and flexible. Parks offered a way to move without needing a plan for distance, pace, or outcome. “Parks didn’t feel intimidating,” he says. “I didn’t feel like anyone was judging me or wondering why I was there.” What mattered most was the lack of pressure. There was no requirement to meet a benchmark or follow a program. Walking in the parks allowed Jamie to begin privately, without comparison, and without the pressure to improve on a timeline that wasn’t his own. “Some days it was twenty or thirty feet,” he says. “Some days I sat on a bench. But I showed up.”

THE ROUTINE What made walking stick was not just motivation, but intentional structure. Fargo’s parks offered nature trails like Heritage Hills that were close to home, familiar, and repeatable. Looped paths removed the need to decide how far to go and winter maintenance meant the routine didn’t disappear after a snowfall. When the weather made outdoor walking less accessible, the habit didn’t stop. “Almost every day, they (parks) help with something,” he says. “Not just the outdoor parks. In the winter, I walk at the Fargo Parks Sports Center four or five days a week. Having places that are free, accessible, and clean makes it easier to keep going on hard days.” What surprised Jamie was not only how walking was changing his body, but how much easier it became to stay mentally present. The changing seasons, the repetition, and the small variations from day to day kept his attention in ways he hadn’t expected. “The parks keep me mentally engaged,” Jamie says. “That’s honestly harder than being physically engaged.”

SPRING SUMMER 2026 | 10

Something Better WHAT CHANGED As the walks accumulated, the changes extended beyond the physical. On difficult days, Jamie returned to the same benches that had once marked his limits. The parks gave him somewhere to go without walls, mirrors, or an audience. “Being outside helped my mental health just as much as my physical health,” he says. “It gave me somewhere to go on hard days.” Moving through the same parks repeatedly reshaped how Jamie related to those spaces. They stopped feeling like places he passed through and began to feel familiar, even personal. Walking the same paths, at the same times, reshaped how Jamie thought about where he belonged. “They became part of my routine,” he says. “Part of my life.”

WHY HE SHARES IT PUBLICLY Jamie didn’t start sharing his walks online with an audience in mind. At first, the posts were simply a record of where he had been and how the walk had gone. What he noticed, though, was how often people responded to the practical details. “I didn’t see many people showing what it actually looks like,” he says. “Not the highlight reel.” Rather than offering advice or before-and-after images, Jamie focused on the practical realities. Where to park, where the bathroom is. Which paths felt approachable or have the best wildlife. What a conservation trail looks like on an ordinary day. In doing so, he made visible the same features that had made walking sustainable for him in the first place. “If someone can see me doing it,” he says, “maybe they feel like they can too.” The response mirrored what Jamie had experienced himself. Knowing where to start, what to expect, and how a space feels can be the difference between staying home and showing up.

@JSELZLER

Most days still begin the same way for Jamie. He steps onto the same loop he’s walked hundreds of times and starts moving. Without those trails, the benches, that familiarity, the beginning might not have been possible at all. “You don’t have to be in great shape to start using the parks,” he says. “You just have to show up.” Fargo’s parks ask little of the people who use them. They offer something simpler: a place to belong. PARK STORIES | 11

Group Exercise

Intro to Personal Training

Child Watch

Courts Plus offers a wide variety of Group Exercise classes for all fitness levels and ages. Whether you're a beginner or seasoned exerciser, there's something for you, from Cycling and Circuit to Yoga, Pilates, BodyPump, and more. Classes for older adults focus on strength, balance, yoga, and dance. Best of all, classes are included with your membership at no extra cost! With beginner and 30-minute options available, let Courts Plus make fitness a fun part of your daily routine. Visit CourtsPlus.org/group-exercise for more.

This free class teaches participants how to use all of the fitness equipment throughout the facility. While it is not a personal training session, it will give you an idea of how to use machines correctly and safely. The class also counts towards a youth orientation. Registration, dates, and times are available through our website on the group fitness page. For more information contact Jamie Larson at jmlarson@courtsplus.org or call 701-237-4805.

Courts Plus Child Watch offers the best way to work out without worrying about a babysitter. Kids are endlessly entertained by our playroom, playground, variety of activities and trained child watch workers. A maximum of two hours at one time per day. Parents must remain at Courts Plus during this time. Check out CourtsPlus.org/Childwatch for additional details or email Crystal Howes at chowes@courtsplus.org

Level Overview Children progress through a series of seven levels designed to teach the fundamentals of swimming and encourage aquatic exploration with guided instruction. In doing so, the Fargo Park District works to ensure a high level of competency is acquired by participants in both aquatic safety and swimming skills.

Pre-Level

AGES 4-5

Participants learn how to be safe around water and begin working on floating, arm and leg movements, and confidence in the water where they can touch.

Level 1

Students continue building confidence by learning the basic swimming kicks and arm strokes (whip and flutter kicks and the front and back crawl) with support from floatation devices and the instructor.

Level 2

Students focus on practicing the skill sets learned in level one and build the confidence to complete the skills without support from the instructor and/or floatation devices.

Level 3

Students begin working on their swimming endurance along with more intermediate swimming skills such as the breaststroke and diving.

Level 4

Students continue developing their swimming endurance and begin working on more advanced swimming strokes, such as the side stroke and butterfly. Basic lifesaving practices, such as a reachthrow technique, are introduced that focus specifically on staying safe around pools, lakes and rivers.

Level 5

Students continue developing basic, intermediate, and advanced swimming strokes, focusing on endurance, refinement, and mastery. Surface dives and diving from starting blocks are also introduced.

Level 6/Pre-lifeguarding

Students continue to develop their swimming endurance and begin learning intermediate life-saving skills. Pre-lifeguarding skills are taught in order to prepare students to be good babysitters/nannies and/or future lifeguards. This level is a benefit to any student who spends time around water during the summer months and ensures students are prepared to pass the water skills requirements for lifeguarding certifications.

Lifeguard Certification

AGES 15+

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification courses are available this spring. Each course is limited to the first ten paid registrants. The lifeguard courses are now blended learning courses; this requires registrants to complete the online portion prior to the in-water portion of the course. $160.00 North High School Indoor Pool, 801 17th Ave N

Tennis Program Whether your child is just starting the game or is trying to make a local school team, we have lessons designed to take them to the next level. Register for the tennis program at CourtsPlus.org/Tennis.

Star Tennis Our Star Junior Tennis and MXP Tennis program uses a progressive court system that uses 36’, 60’ and 78’ (regular size) tennis court. Coupled with ensuring the proper racquet length and using different types of tennis balls based on age and ability, our goal is to get your child playing tennis as soon as possible. This system gives your child a visible progression to maximize their improvement. Each of our lessons are divided up into three critical phases beginning with a warm-up emphasizing tennis specific movement and coordination. This is followed by a skillbuilding phase. Then, skills are practiced “live” in a competitive phase, where rallying and game conditions are experienced. In this six-lesson program, juniors will be using real golf clubs rather than the SNAG golf equipment. The youth will be taught a simplified approach to learning the game of golf. It covers basic fundamentals, etiquette, rules of the game and concludes with a team scramble event on the El Zagal short course. New golfers in this age group may benefit from participating in Active Start before enrolling in Active Start+1. Participants are encouraged to bring their own golf equipment, though limited golf equipment is available.
