Creative Industries Annual 2022

ANNUAL

As society emerges from the global pandemic, so does the many facets of the creative industries. Slightly battered and bruised, but also empowered and hungry to re-embrace the physical outcomes of its creativity. This annual and the showcase event that accompanies it is living proof that the Creative Industries faculty at Fareham College has definitely made up for lost time.

It has been another stellar year for the Creative Industries faculty as we have seen hundreds of students embrace the power of creativity and add personal value as well as academic value. The ability to be creative and express thoughts, ideals and feelings should not be underestimated and we are proud of how our students express themselves in such a confident manner. From music to barbering, all of our learners combine excellence with imagination and are rewarded with the astonishing outcomes you will see and read about in this annual. They cannot achieve this without the support of their dedicated lecturers and support staff who are the embodiment of what the Creative Industries faculty represents and we cannot thank them enough for their efforts in what has continued to be challenging circumstances within education. The value added to these young people by their lecturers will serve them well as they move on to the next steps of their academic or professional journeys and we are proud that Fareham College has been able to play a large role in that journey.

The 4th addition of the Creative Industries Annual is designed to showcase and celebrate the talented and dedicated learners who have completed qualifications to the highest standard in readiness for either entering their chosen industry or progressing onto Higher Education. We hope you enjoy and appreciate their enormous skill and brilliant artistry.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing & Production Arts

What was the thought process behind your current project?

I am currently working on my final project which is a look based on fantasy. I conducted research and I have found a lot of different types of fantasy from mermaids to fairy’s however I did not want to do the obvious fantasy look. I thought about what else could be a fantasy and in my opinion Mother Nature is a beautiful thing so I thought that I could incorporate the two together. I chose to do a nature inspired look tied into a fantasy look with a green women “Mother Nature” with flowers and plants around the head to really show the fantasy side of Mother Nature.

Did you feel you were able to orchestrate your ideas as best as possible? How did you do so?

I love how my final project turned out, my look really showed my chosen topic which was fantasy. I put a lot of time and effort into my design which really showed in my final piece, my client and I were happy on the final look. I got great feedback on what went well from my teacher and what I could have improved for next time. Overall, I feel as if I orchestrated my ideas into my design well and I produced something I am incredibly happy with!

What is your ideal outcome from this course?

After I have finished my course, I want to be able to open my own business doing clients makeup and nails for all diverse types of occasions like weddings and birthdays, making people feel good and being able to carry my passion through my work. I also hope that I can be a makeup artist on movie sets working on famous actors and working within a team as I love doing different makeup looks every day. This would help my skills expand and open more opportunities for the future.

What problems did you face during your project?

I faced many problems with my final project. I could not decide what I wanted to do with my fantasy look. I had so many ideas but could not do them all so I went and asked my teacher if she could give some advice on what I could do and how I could decide what design I wanted to do.

After many discussions I finally decided what I wanted to do for my final project and sketched up a few designs on a template. When it came to completing my design, I was running out of time to complete my full look in the time we had been given as I love my look to be perfect so next time.

I would definitely need to keep on top of my time management.

When did your interest in performing arts begin and did any performing artists spark your interest?

My interest in performing arts began in school as I would do my makeup every day and would enjoy doing crazy makeup looks. Therefore, I came to Fareham College and joined the course to not only do what I loved every day but to expand my skills. From joining Fareham College, I discovered that I enjoyed body painting the most so in my spare time I practiced painting different characters on my chest. I have also made an Instagram to share my looks with other makeup artists and hopefully inspire them; @abs_baker What has been a highlight of your time here at Fareham College?

The highlight of my year is making good friends with people and my teacher but also learning things that I would have never been able to do if I had not come to Fareham College. I love how this course provides such a wide variety of things for you to learn which helps you expand your portfolio, helping you later in life. Over my 3 years of being at Fareham College I have been taught so much. I am a lot better now at makeup than I was back in school.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography

Explain the basis of your current project For my current project, I needed to portray a journey. To do this, I have decided to take three sets of triptychs (totalling at 9 images), showing a journey from the centre of a city to the edge of one. I will focus on architecture and showing how the designs differ throughout the city. I am planning to use different cities and add more variety to the buildings I am showing.

Did any famous photographers or their work inspire you, why do you look up to them?

My project idea has been influenced by multiple photographers. My main inspiration was drawn from Mitch Epstein, specifically his photo of the Carson Oil Refinery in California. This image inspired me to use different angles to make the buildings appear more three dimensional. I discovered Epstein while reading “Read This If You Want to Take Great Photographs of Places” by author Henry Carrol, to learn more about architecture photography.

What skills have you developed at Fareham College?

At Fareham College, I have developed a lot of different skills and camera techniques. More specifically, I have learnt how to use Photoshop to enhance my images and fix most blemishes in my images. I have also learnt about more styles and diverse ways to present my images.

How do you feel your teachers have supported your creative decisions?

Throughout college, both my lecturers and my success coach have been extremely helpful and informative. They have helped refine my ideas and taught me about different techniques and effects that I can use to further improve my photographs. I have received extremely effective and well explained feedback on my images and my written work from both of my lecturers as well, which has been extremely helpful.

Do you see yourself working in the photography industry?

In the future, I plan to build my own photography business, more specifically being able to sell my own photographs. However, I would like to do some commission pieces as well. I currently want to specialise in still life photography, but this could always change depending on future research and circumstances.

Do you do any photography work outside of college?

Outside of college I like to photograph different images and edit them using Affinity Photo, which is a photo editing software like Photoshop. I do this as more of a hobby, but I also take images for my Father’s business and band.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design

What was the creative process behind your FMP? My FMP involved a variety of experimentations with self-set 2D and 3D workshops using clay, acrylic, markers, pencils, and ink that gave me the opportunity to try out a range of artistic techniques.

Where did you take your inspiration from, for your art style as a whole?

For a while, I have found myself inspired by an artist named Francis Bacon. Bacon specializes in disturbing and abstract imagery with powerful meaning behind the pieces, which I found to be fascinating. I have always been a massive fan of horror, so I found Francis’ art particularly striking.

I initially discovered him when my previous lecturer assigned me to write my 1000-word analytical piece on our own chosen artist and since then, I have developed more insight and fascination toward abstract art.

Who has been your biggest supporter throughout your project?

My success coach has been incredibly supportive of me throughout my time here. They were especially supportive at the beginning of the course when I was really struggling with the workload and were always willing to help in any way they could. They were especially useful for general aspects like Harvard referencing and submitting my units using pebblepad.

What have you found to be your strengths and weaknesses on your course?

My skills are stronger when I am creating abstract art and unearthly creations. However, I struggle with finer and more realistic art as I find it difficult to achieve small and realistic details, as well as general realism.

When did you become interested in art and design and what are your future plans after completion of your course?

I have been studying at Fareham for almost 3 years and in my first year I studied computing until I realized it was not for me. I took part in a lot of art taster sessions during my time studying computing because I found enjoyment in doing the off-pencil sketch from time to time. These sessions gave me the opportunity to use new forms of media and I was disappointed when the sessions were cancelled due to COVID. These sessions inspired me to study Art and Design in my second year, and I carried it through until my third year. In terms of after college, I am unsure what path I will take when I finish Level 3 Art. I am thinking of going freelance; however, I have a mild interest in concept art. I have an interest in this because I like the idea of making something yourself based on something else you are passionate about.

What has been a high and a low of your current project?

A low point of my current project was trying to think of a theme around the concept which we were provided with, which was ‘Journey.’ I found this daunting because I needed to think of something that I could research thoroughly, as well as something that I am passionate enough about creating, that I will not stray away from. On the other hand, the highest point in my unit has been workshops that I set myself. These were an opportunity to unleash my creativity and experiment with different methods and techniques. This became incredibly important when it came to refining and finalizing my outcome.

What was the thought process behind your current project?

At this point in my training process as a performer it is constant self-improvement. I am currently participating in six different productions for the same showcase that is about to be presented in two weeks time. The singing, dancing, and acting, especially in English, test all my limits that with effort and dedication are yielding and so moving on.

Did you feel like you could develop your ideas as best as possible and how so?

At first, I had a chaotic view of how to develop my ideas, because of cultural and language barriers that I was experiencing, but I made it important to maintain the most vital elements of my performance using perseverance, expressionism, and patience. All these factors benefited my whole experience of the course.

What is your ideal outcome from this course?

My goal is to perfect my art and exploit the maximum of my potential. There is no better way to study than in England. The path I have chosen is not easy but achieving it will make my arrival at my next destination, London, more glorious.

I want to take my passion to the next level by continuing my studies at university.

What problems did you face on this project?

The biggest challenge I have ever faced is being able to see beyond my own defeats. There are always difficulties, but if I had stayed the way I was, I would have missed many opportunities to show my talents that I have cultivated for a long time thinking that I am not worthy. Opportunities that have been given to me and of course I accepted in time to be more than I am now.

What has been the highlight of your time here at Fareham?

There is much to highlight and be grateful for, but the greatest honour goes to my friends and teachers. Despite the circumstances shortly after my arrival in 2020, my new life in England has been wonderful. I had all kinds of experiences that led me here and now to meet them and be welcomed with open arms since day one. They have supported me whenever I need them, always ready to share smiles, tears, and inspiration. Without knowing it, they have become the siblings I once dreamed of having.

They have given me the courage to fight and be the kind of person and performer that I really want to be, and I plan to proudly carry their memories and teachings wherever I go.

When did your interest in the performing arts begin?

Ever since I can remember I have had this fervent fascination for the performance. Thanks to the support of my family, I have achieved everything possible to take it to the last frontiers, developing my passion for singing, dancing, and acting, my specialty. Drawing, painting, and literature have also been an important part of my life. By the time I reached my teens, I also knew that the moment to transcend real borders had arrived when I had the opportunity to come so far from Colombia to achieve my goals in the journey of a lifetime. I miss my homeland but from this point it will be up to me to leave my legacy as high as I can in the years to come.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts

What was the thought process behind your current project?

My current project is being the stage manager for our final Performing Arts showcase. My thought process behind my decision to stage manage, rather than direct a piece, was that although I am on a Performing Arts course and have enjoyed the opportunities I’ve had to perform over the last two years, my passion lies firmly in the stage management/backstage department. I thought that it would be more beneficial to me and I would get more enjoyment from my final project if I did something in preparation for life after Fareham College. I do a lot of stage management work outside of college, so I also wanted to take the opportunity to do it in college and work with different people, in a different setting and to challenge myself to do it on my own rather than with the team I am used to working with.

Did you feel you were able to develop your skills?

I feel that I have had endless support from both my lecturers and everyone else on my course which has enabled me to develop my skills how I’ve wanted to.

Did you face any problems in your project, and if so, how did you overcome them?

I’ve been quite lucky in that I haven’t encountered many major problems during this project. I’d say that the biggest problem was putting together the show’s running order - it took me a good 3 days! I wanted to make sure it flowed well and was enjoyable for the audience which sounds easy enough, but when you must factor in quick changes and set changes etc... it suddenly becomes a lot more complicated! I managed to do it via a lot of trial and error and eventually I managed to create a running order that worked well for everyone.

When did your interest in the subject begin?

My interest in Performing Arts began when I was doing drama for one of my GCSEs - I always found that I loved the lessons and wanted to pursue performing in college. I have loved performing here at Fareham College for the last two years, but my interest in stage management took over and led me to choose that for my final project. My interest in stage management began in 2018 when I was given the opportunity to shadow the stage manager on a production of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’. I instantly fell in love with the backstage hustle and knew that it was something I wanted to do.

Are there any performing artists or media that inspired your work?

There isn’t anyone specifically that has inspired my work, but I have found that I’m inspired by every show I have seen to pursue stage management.

What has been a highlight of your time at Fareham College?

My biggest highlight of my time here at Fareham College must be when we did ‘Ghost: The Musical’ in March 2022. It was such a fun show to put on and the sense of achievement we got from hearing the audience’s reaction after all the hard work we’d put into it was incredible. It was the first time we’d been able to put on a full musical because of Covid so it really was a highlight.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design

What are you currently working towards?

The theme I chose to explore for my final major project is Black Lives Matter and Racism. The reason why I choose to focus on this subject is because I am passionate about this subject matter as I have a personal connection and feel I could express this through my work. I wanted to use my final project to communicate and bring awareness of the struggles of the Black Lives Matter movement; I want to highlight this message to hopefully end all Racism.

Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your project or in general?

The key person that has inspired me this year has been Deborah Roberts through her portraits.

Deborah explored bold colour collage through her works. The individual she selects tent to be young and from ethnic backgrounds. I felt she captured these people well through her portraits and I found her work became key inspiration as I also embraced the use of colourful patterns finished when working with collage.

How do you plan to progress after college in the creative industry?

I will be going onto study an Illustration degree at the University of Portsmouth. I am excited at the prospect of going to university to hopefully make a career as an illustrator.

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your project?

I would say my biggest strength is working with collage and blending photography to create my illustrations methods. Overall, this year I feel I have developed a lot as an individual but I do feel I still have a lot to learn especially when it comes to refining my ideas.

Have you always been interested in Art & Design?

I have always had an interest in Art and Design and I have always wanted to work in the creative sector since I was a child. I feel that this course has allowed me to develop my art skills and I have had the opportunity to explore a wide range of art techniques this has given me the confidence to apply to university.

Have you discovered any new skills or techniques whilst at Fareham College?

Whilst studying at Fareham college I have learnt and discover a wide range of new skills, however, one of my favourites was image transfer. With this technique I was able to transfer my own design onto t-shirts and tote bags. This technique allowed me to create product to sell in a commercial setting and this has given me the confidence to create artwork to sell.

What are you currently working towards?

I am currently working towards finishing my final major project by creating my outcomes on a digital drawing software.

Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your project or in general?

I have been heavily inspired by the digital artist, Trevor Henderson, who creates disturbing and horrific creatures and digitally draws them onto photos he's taken to make the creatures look like they've entered our reality. I've really admired his art for a few years now and have wanted to create pieces of art from my own imagination.

How do you plan to progress after college in the creative industry?

I would like to pursue a career in the creative industry, however, I'm not entirely sure what that will be yet. My plan is to commit to a small job to earn some money and possibly start creating my own pieces of art to sell. I am happy to be flexible and see what opportunities the industry will present to me.

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your project?

I feel like I have improved in digital art as that has been my main form of media for my recent project. Since doing digital art, I have excelled a lot more in my personal artwork and have improved skills that I wasn’t as confident with such as shading, colouring, and using different digital pens and effects. I have struggled with focus and motivation when I was researching topics related to each project, which would often cause me to take longer with the research and move onto the practical, however I would always try to complete the research to the best of my ability, try my best and take breaks in between.

Have you always been interested in Art & Design?

Since I was very young, I have always been into Art and Design. I would draw whatever came into my imagination which would eventually develop into fanart for video games, movies and TV shows that would later inspire my own characters and art style.

Have you discovered any new skills or techniques whilst at Fareham College?

I have discovered many different types of artistic medias and experimented with many different workshops that I had never done before. Examples of these would be Cyanotypes, ink and bleach drawings, heat print and press for transferring images onto fabrics such as t-shirts, Polaroid lifts (which is also another type of image transfer) that could be used for putting images onto ceramics, and many more workshops that I learned over the 2 years I've been here at Fareham College.

Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media Production

What was the thought process behind your current project?

During my magazine project I started making a similar theme, but for this FMP I linked it to 'Identity' by focusing on Mixed Martial Arts Athletes. The link to identity is how individuals are different even within the same profession and having the same dream of becoming champions.

Did you feel you were able to create your ideas as best as possible?

It looks the way I want to it to look from when I first envisioned it, so I would say it is going well.

Did you face any problems in your project, and if so how did you overcome them?

It has been difficult in terms of composition and making all the elements fit in the right place and making these flow well, without looking unnatural. Given that these individuals are international athletes/celebrities I was not able to take my own photographs of them, so I had to find stock images. As the images are from a while back, these may not be of good quality, and I had to work around it. Some fighters I was not able to include as the images were of very low quality.

When did your interest in the subject begin?

I became interested in Media in 2013 watching videos about editing, foley, etc... I wanted to be able to edit since I was 8 years old; but I only started practically getting into media about 3 years ago. In my last project [videography] the feedback was that I had completed some very good editing; so, in this FMP I wanted to try something achievable within the time frame.

Are there any main media artists that have inspired your work?

The UFC posters made by a previous Fareham College Graphic Design student has been an initial reference.

What has been a highlight of your time at Fareham College?

I like the Media course. I did not know how to do Graphic Design and now I am making posters.

I also learnt how to create magazines and now I can use different editing apps such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing & Production Arts

What was the thought process behind your current project?

My thought process behind my current project is renaissance inspired. I wanted to create a piece that involved renaissance style art (inspired by the Sistine Chapel) and angelic fantasy creature.

Did you feel you were able to realise your ideas? How did you do so?

I believe my ideas of what I picture in my head have definitely come together how I imagined it. I think I have got a good balance of all my ideas by brainstorming and mind-mapping and trying out multiple draft designs.

What is your ideal outcome from this course?

What problems did you face?

My ideal outcome from this course is to have learnt things I did not know before, especially the special effects elements of the course.

Furthermore to feel like i would be ready for industry. I definitely think I have achieved these.

What problems did you face during your project?

The problems I faced during my final project involved creating full body designs as it takes a lot of imagination and time to create a full body look. Also, painting in a renaissance style is exceedingly difficult so that was also a challenge I had to overcome.

When did your interest in Production Arts begin and did any performing artists spark your interest?

My interest in Production Arts started at a relatively young age. I was always fascinated by anything theatre related as a child and used to do dance shows. My interest gradually moved towards the makeup element of the industry and I found a real interest in how professionals created looks for theatre and TV. What has been the highlight of your time here at Fareham College?

I have enjoyed my time at Fareham College, especially our creative lessons and all the trips we have been on. It has presented me with lots of industry-based opportunities.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography

Explain the concept of your current project.

My current project is based on the theme of a 'Journey', and I have decided to explore the city of Portsmouth and capture a set of images to document a 'journey through time' by recreating past pictures from over time taken in the city.

Do you see yourself working in the photography industry?

I see myself working in the photography industry.

It’s something I have aspired to work towards for the last 5 years and I will continue to push on with for the foreseeable future.

Did any famous photographers or their work inspire your own?

My work throughout this project was inspired in part by Mark Power and his book 'The Shipping Forecast'. I liked the presentation of his work, and it was something I wanted to carry into my project. The concept itself was inspired by John Saddens book 'Portsmouth Through Time' as it was effectively exactly what I wanted to do.

Do you do any photography work outside of college?

Outside of college I do work as a photographer and work in various fields of photography. My main line of work is Sports where I have worked closely with my local football team for the last 5 years which has led to me earning an award at the Non-League Bible Awards this year. Also, in my sports work I have covered motorsport at Goodwood Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival which I thoroughly enjoy and will continue working at. I have also worked as an automotive photographer capturing vehicles at various events and for various companies and people. More recently I have started to work closely with Portsmouth Guildhall and GoGeek Events CIC for whom I helped launch and anti-bullying scheme and with the build-up to this year's Portsmouth Comic Con.

What skills have you developed at Fareham College?

Whilst at Fareham College I have learnt how to balance time more throughout my projects and prioritise certain parts of my work.

How do you feel your teachers have supported your creative decisions?

My teachers have taught me how to think more outside the box and venture out of my comfort zone to capture images I wouldn't normally think to capture.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Graphic design

What is your current project about?

My current project is named “Journey” and has been one of the most self-directed projects that I have been involved in. The project thesis is to create anything related to the word Journey, so I have chosen to create a physical video gallery of my artwork, whilst also conveying a metaphorical journey of my life. I have been in the process of creating extremely detailed digital paintings using Adobe Photoshop, and then compiling them in Adobe After Effects, to be animated to transition into one another.

Have college resources provided you with as much creative freedom as you would like?

The courses are set out in a way that allows me to take any direction that I want to, even those that are more niche. If I choose to develop my project in a way that my teacher does not completely know how to support, we can set up a meeting with somebody who does. This happened recently and the second person had enough knowledge to point me in the right direction to be able to learn about the method myself, with the required support.

Have any themes or artists inspired your work?

For this project, the website “Zoom Quilt,” amongst other similar websites, has been my largest Inspiration. However, in context of my work, I have taken influence from various art pieces based on Dungeons and Dragons. I would prefer for this project to have a darker theme that is able to portray my own emotions and fears.

This ensures that the project is personal and motivated by my own ideals.

Where do you think you fit in the Graphic Design Industry?

I personally gravitate more towards Illustration work rather than Geometric work that is often portrayed in commercial advertising. My craft is more suited for more detailed work such as posters. I also believe that I may move away from Graphic Design and see where else I can fit into the working world of the creative industries.

When did you first show interest in Graphic Design and why?

My love for Art began when I was young and began to sprout when I was around 10 years old when I began trying pencil realism. This continued throughout secondary school until I was faced with what GCSE subjects that I would take. My school offered Graphic Design as an option alongside a taster day, and I thought that it was similar to Art but with more future career paths. I ended up disliking GCSE Graphic Design because they were too controlling over my creative ideas and styles. However, this did not dishearten me because I realized it was the school's way of teaching, not that I had a lack of passion for the subject. I gave it another chance in college, and I stand by my decision because it turned out to be great!

What are your creative strengths and weaknesses?

My strengths as an artist begin with my passion for what I do and my work. However, this can sometimes have a negative effect where if I do not immediately find interest in the project, I struggle to put enough care into my work.

Therefore, freelance work in particular calls out to me because I can refuse jobs that do not align with my creative style. Although, I am very open-minded and will consider every opportunity that I receive and be able to decide whether it is right for me or not. Another strength of mine is that I am always ambitious to do better. I am constantly learning and trying to improve my skills, and always trying to get better than previous versions of myself.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography

What is the basis of your current project?

I am currently working on my Final Major Project. For this project, I had a few ideas that I had bounced around with such as infrared and thermal imaging photography, but in the end I decided this would not work for me. Through the process of trial and error, I bought a cheap camera from eBay and began to learn the settings so that I could practice taking photos in my local areas. After looking at these photos, I realized that there was a colour temperature change, which inspired my final idea to photograph memories throughout the final weeks of college to show them in a unique perspective.

Although some of the images did not turn out as planned, I was able to improvise and use multiple editing apps to tweak the images and give them my desired look. I am now choosing what looks best and gathering ideas for my presentation.

Did any famous photographers inspire your work and why do you look up to them?

I do not necessarily look toward any photographers for my work. I mostly look at Pinterest and search for ideas that capture what I am looking to recreate. A lot of the time the pictures are taken by people who love photography and have had their images in exhibitions or won awards for their images. In all honesty, I prefer the lesser-known types of photographers, who show their work through exhibitions, mostly because I find them more interesting and that their ideas are easily accessible to the public as well.

Do you see yourself working in the photography industry?

Yes, definitely. When I first began photography as a young teenager, I had already set goals for myself to become a well-known photographer.

Even if that does not work out exactly as planned, I am sure that I will have plenty of other opportunities for my photography to lead me somewhere successful.

How do you feel your teachers have supported your creative decisions?

I feel that my teacher has helped me through constructive feedback. By helping me learn what works and what does not or helping me to link context to my work when needed. They have also supported me by helping to find a solution when I am feeling stuck on what move to make next and pushing me to try new things to help spark my own creativity. My teachers have helped to push me out of my comfort zone and try new things, things that my former self would not be comfortable even trying, that I can now try on my own. They have made me realize that photography has no limits when it comes to personal creativity.

What skills have you developed at College?

At Fareham College, I had the chance to develop numerous skills. Beginning with my editing, I now know how to use multiple editing software as well as others that I would not usually use. For example, Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign and Illustrator have been software that I have developed my skills with. I have also learnt how to work with different cameras, lighting for images, film photography and developing images in a dark room. Alongside all these new technical skills, I have learnt how to develop my own personal style of photography and give myself the confidence to take new opportunities.

Do you do any photography outside of your college work?

Yes, I do. When I am feeling stressed or unmotivated, I will take my camera outside and take some photos of anything I can find.

Whether it is portraits, nature, street photography, or anything that I can find beauty in. Taking these photographs elevates my mood and I like to share the images with other people afterwards.

I plan to take more photographs during the summer, but I am hoping that university will be able to help me develop my skills in being able to plan professional photoshoots with other people and take photographing more seriously.

Level 3 Technical Diploma in Beauty Therapy

What are you currently working towards?

I am working towards passing my Level 3 Technical Diploma in Beauty Therapy, and to eventually work full-time in the beauty industry.

Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your current project or in general?

I would say that the influence of social media has inspired me regarding my course choice as I love watching videos and the ways people can feel relaxed and get enjoyment from treatments.

How do you plan to progress after college in the creative industry?

Once I have left college, my plan is to work fulltime as a beauty therapist, and to have completed every course I could possibly do.

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your project?

My biggest strength in this course, is that I love to learn new things and pick up new skills so I can adapt in my techniques.

Have you always been interested in the beauty industry?

I have always been interested in beauty therapy from such a young age, as I was always watching my mum do her makeup, which then led to me doing my own.

Have you discovered any new skills or techniques whilst at Fareham College?

I have discovered that I have become more confident with myself as we all make mistakes and can improve upon them.

Level 2 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing

What are you currently working towards?

I am currently working towards finishing my first year at Fareham College and moving onto a Level 3 in Women's Hairdressing to further my knowledge and set me up for my future career.

Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your current project or in general?

Personally I wasn't inspired by anyone in particular but I was inspired by the thought of becoming a hairdresser that has an opportunity to impact people's lives and make them enjoy their experiences.

How do you plan to progress after college regarding the creative industry?

I would like to become a freelancer, as I believe this gives you a better opportunity to make an impact on your clients as you will get to know them more personally.

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your project?

I believe that my biggest strengths in my course are my technical skills such as cutting, as well as having the ability to adapt a service to the clients needs. When I first started at Fareham College, I faced a lot of anxiety around the projects, but over the course of the year I have had lots of support from everyone which has allowed me to overcome this.

Have you always been interested in the beauty and hairdressing industry?

Hairdressing hasn't always interested me, but as soon as I started the course I knew it was for me, I enjoy almost every aspect of hairdressing and couldn't imagine myself doing anything else.

Have you discovered any new skills or techniques whilst at Fareham College?

I have discovered that I am very adaptable, and good at persevering as I take on a new challenge with each and every client. Fareham College has allowed me to grow and understand that I can push my own barriers to become a better version of myself.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music

What is the basis of your current project?

The basis of my current project is idealizing, producing, and performing a show that highlights a culmination of the skills and musicianship that I have gained over the past two years on this music course.

Are there any artists who have inspired your work and what kind of artist do you hope to become in the music industry?

Musically, I am really intrigued by guitarists and songwriters like Ariel Posen and Chris Buck. I am fascinated by harmony and the way certain chords and melodic progressions can make me feel so strongly. I try to appropriately add this emotive playing into my performances, giving me a signature style and flare on stage. In the future, I hope to become an artist that can tell stories and allow people to lose themselves in my music.

I want to write songs that people can relate to and apply their own experiences and meanings to. I also want to be known as the hardest working musician in the room. First to enter, last to leave. If I can apply that work ethic, I can make music for my future.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I hope to be a professional musician.

I am extremely passionate about creating and performing music, whether that be as an original artist, a session musician or part of a function band. If I am playing music, I am happy!

What piece of work have you enjoyed creating the most?

Doing blues improvisation as a unit was the most rewarding. Playing with other musicians and having to create innovative ideas and melodies on the spot is so inspiring, and is something that I will always be interested in. It really pushes you as a musician when you must be creative in the moment. As an instrumentalist, it is your worst fear to be boring, so constantly trying to raise your own bar is a challenge we all look to embrace.

When did your interest in music begin?

I have always been interested in music; my dad used to play a wide variety of music on car journeys. I picked up a guitar at age 10 and the rest is history.

What struggles have you faced on your course?

The biggest struggle has been, not to sound clichéd, the pandemic. Being such a practical course, Lockdown and illness meant that we had minimal public gigging experience and fewer rehearsals (especially in the first year), so that aspect has been a struggle for us all.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion

What is your current project about?

My current project is about the recent popular TV show Euphoria and the aesthetics surrounding the show. I chose to take inspiration from Euphoria because of some of the fashion trends that have emerged from the show.

What fashion icons do you aspire toward?

One of the main fashion icons I aspire towards would have to be the designer of Moschino, Jeremy Scott, because of his creativity and his view on fashion with the garments and accessories that he makes. His clothes are so colourful and eye-catching which is something that I aspire to create.

Are there any specific fashion pieces or lines that have inspired your project?

Some things that inspired me throughout this project was the TV show itself and the fact that a modern style of clothing was born after the airing of the show called “Euphoria Fashion.” From this, people started to put together outfits that look like their favourite characters, and when coupled with the fact that I wanted to focus on modern day fashion Euphoria seemed like a fantastic way to develop an understanding of this and take ideas from as well.

What has Fareham College taught you about the fashion industry?

From Fareham College, I have learned that there are so many distinct aspects of fashion and that it does not only revolve around making and selling clothes. I have learnt that there are so many different career paths within the fashion industry alone, some of which do not even require a sewing machine!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I see myself being a costume maker or a set designer for a theatre or production company after I go to university.

What was your favourite part of the project, and what problems did you face?

My favourite part of this project was working with varied materials and doing things that I have never tried before. Some of the problems I faced during this project were because I am new to the theme and have been learning techniques that I have never explored before.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Graphic Design

What is your current project about?

My project is about the concept of ‘a journey’. For my project, I decided to illustrate my commute to college, but one of my ideas was to create a map of countries that I have been to. The map would have included icons to represent each country, and I also played around with the idea of creating icons for each step of my college commute.

Have any themes or artists inspired your work?

I liked the idea of a flowing timeline and being able to flow through each step of it. Gradual, yet inevitable movement that comes naturally. I took inspiration from different icons and clocks that I found on Google Images. I also created platforms myself for product placement.

Have the college resources provided you with as much creative freedom as you would like?

Yes, I have access to many Adobe products such as Photoshop and Illustrator. I also have had access to resources such as a laser cutter.

Where do you see yourself in the Graphic design industry?

I aim to start a social media page displaying my work, so that it is easily noticed by larger corporations, and I have a recognizable portfolio.

I would also do commissions for larger corporations, such as creating adverts, logos and designing products, or selling my work to potential investors.

What would you say are your creative strengths and weaknesses?

In terms of strengths, I have learnt a lot of skills on Adobe Illustrator that have helped me to advance my work and generate innovative ideas for what I want to do in future. Some skills that I have learnt include Blending, Blurring and how to implement certain effects such as Neon and 3D. My weaknesses would be that I am not as strong at creating people on this software, as the only time I create them is when I trace pictures of existing people.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography

What is the basis of your current project?

The basis of my current project is that I wanted to do something I enjoyed as it is quite a long project. I chose to do reflections in black and white as I have been interested in reflections for a while now. Also, I love the aesthetic of black and white photography as it takes away the distraction of colour, drawing attention to the details of the picture. As the main reflections were landscapes, I captured them in puddles of water using both my phone and DSLR camera.

Have any famous photographers inspired your work, and why do you look up to them?

I would have to say Henry Cartier. His work inspired me to do this type of photography because of his most famous photo 'Place de l'Europe Gare Saint-Lazare'. This is a photo of a man jumping over a flooded area in Paris with the focus being the surrounding reflections. I admire his work mostly because he focused on candid photography.

What skills have you developed since being at Fareham College?

I have developed many skills in my time at Fareham College, one of the main skills being how to use a camera and its main functions. I developed some other important skills such as using Photoshop as well as how to research and analyse other people's photography.

How do you feel your teachers have supported your creative decisions?

My teachers have supported my creative ideas by helping me develop them in my projects throughout the years and offering feedback as to how well my project is going or how I could improve my idea.

Do you do any photography work outside of college as well as in?

I do often do photography outside of college. I recently did some photography for Hedge End Town FC. A family member asked me to get some pictures and it was a wonderful experience as I had never done sports photography before and they won which was great for the photo opportunities.

Do you see yourself working in the photography industry? And how would you describe your own personal style?

I do see myself working as a photographer, maybe not full-time, but as I have a few upcoming jobs in the summer maybe it will be something I do part-time, or as freelance work. I would describe my personal style of photography as candid because I enjoy capturing those moments that are more memorable and spontaneous.

What are your strengths and what do you hope to improve on before leaving college?

One of my strengths would have to be attention to detail. Ever since I started this course and have become more interested in photography I find myself noticing more details and places/ situations that would make a great picture when I am walking to college or anytime I am somewhere different. Another strength is that I put a lot of thought into my ideas whether they are personal photography projects or college projects. Something that I hope to improve on is my knowledge of my camera, I believe there are always more functions to learn or unusual ways I could use those functions to get better and more creative images.

Level 2 in Beauty Therapy

What are you currently working towards?

I’m currently studying my Level 3 Massage through VCTC. Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your current project or in general?

My first teacher Laura Ashton, and another student Keeley Searle, both have inspired me with pursuing to expanding my skills. Also, my overall interest to offer more services and to explore what more the college can offer.

How do you plan to progress after college in the creative industry?

I already have my own business called ‘Nails & Beauty by Flossy’.

Have you discovered any new skills or techniques whilst studying at Fareham College?

Yes, I have learned many new skills, and now feel confident in the beauty sector where I can offer more services.

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your current project?

I am determined to better myself and learn more, and I won't let people put me down.

Have you always been interested in the beauty industry?

No, I was never interested in the beauty industry, I was always interested in nails from early teenage years but pursued a different career path in pharmacy technician for many years. The pandemic made me want to change my career course and be more independent, exploring nails and then onto beauty which I would not have joined if I was had not enrolled with Fareham College completing the nail course.

Level 2 Diploma in Hair & Beauty Skills

What are you currently working towards?

I am currently completing my Level 2 Hairdressing Diploma and working towards going onto the Level 3 course. I would like to eventually own my own salon.

Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your current project or in general?

I was always inspired to become a hairdresser when I was growing up due to a lot of my family members being stylists. I grew up watching them work and knew that was what I wanted to do. My tutor has also inspired me to carry on with my craft, and encouraged me to keep trying, even when I felt like I was not able to perform as well as I wanted to.

How do you plan to progress after college regarding the creative industry?

Once I am finished at college, I would like to work for someone in a salon for a little while, and in the future work towards owning my own salon. After college I would also like to further my education and knowledge of hair and take part in courses to keep up to date with the modern industry.

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your current project?

My biggest strength in hairdressing is colouring hair and I was lucky as hairdressing came quite naturally to me. However, time management was something I had to work on for a while. I have found it a challenge this year to overcome my anxiety and learn how to believe in myself, as well. My tutor has been a great supporter of me and building my confidence this year and I am very appreciative of that.

Have you always been interested in the beauty and hairdressing industry?

Yes, I have always known I wanted to do hair, everything about it has always interested me.

Have you discovered any new skills or techniques whilst at Fareham College?

Yes, my tutors taught me how to colour and cut hair, and they have taught me all the theory behind it. I have found the course amazing for learning the skills I need for my future progression into the industry. One of my favourite skills that I have developed is being able to effectively communicate with clients and overcome any anxieties that I may hold against my customer service skills.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music

What are you currently working towards?

I am currently working towards my setlist for the summer gig that my band will be playing; we've been spending time compiling a list of songs that will suit the live situation perfectly. We've spent a lot of time carefully selecting the right songs to make sure we can put out our best work.

Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your current project or in general?

For me personally, I would say Tom Misch has been my biggest inspiration in my current work.

He's the artist that I look up to most now as he melds styles of funk, hip-hop and soul in ways that really resonate with me. I've often found myself taking great inspiration from his highly unique guitar playing style.

How do you plan to progress after college in the creative industry?

After college I am planning on taking my personal band as far as I possibly can. We've so far played a number of large sold out shows and these are what I live for! I'd hate to lead a life without being able to play my shows. I guess I'll keep putting my heart into it and see how far it goes!

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your project?

I would say my biggest strength is my on-stage energy - no matter the size of the audience I'm playing for I always feed off of the crowd's vibe.

I have learned to give the audience exactly the feeling they need through my music. Some of the problems I've had to face in this project have been band disagreements over material and delegating responsibility to the members.

Have you always been interested in Music?

Music has always been integral for me. It started when my dad used to take me along to his band's shows from when I was five or six. The highlight of my night always used to be having a go on his drums after they had finished playing - it made me feel like one of the band!

Have you discovered any new skills or techniques whilst at Fareham College?

Since starting my course at Fareham College, I think my ability to work with many other musicians has grown dramatically, to the point now that I have been able to get out into the music industry and work with promoters, sound techs, other bands and other members in my band. I would have been a world away from any of these successes without the skills I've learned from my time at college.

Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Creative Media Production

What is your current project about?

Myproject is documentary production. I have decided to call it “Mull Magic” and it is about an exceptional wildlife walking tour company.

Who would you say is your target audience?

My target audience would be walkers, photographers, natural historians, Isle of Mull visitors and residents, Scottish tourists and those who are interested in wildlife.

What inspired the theme of your project?

I previously undertook a Marine and Natural History Photography degree at Falmouth University. One of my personal projects that I undertook was in Lapland and I hoped to catch the effects of climate change on the Reindeer herders. Unfortunately, I failed to have a high standard of work, so I felt that climate change could be better described through a video.

So, I came to Fareham College to develop my filmmaking skills.

When did your interest in Creative Media begin and why?

I’ve had a lifetime of taking pictures, but it was all put on hold when I had children. I bought a new camera to visit the Grand Canyon around 12 years ago, but I ended up hurting my back slipping down a cliff. Part of my recovery was to walk through the New Forest with my camera, this then led to me going to university.

How have Fareham College supported your creative choices, and what has been a highlight of your course?

I found that Fareham College have been supportive of my ideas, and there is always room for discussion about them. As corny as it sounds, I appreciate the enthusiasm, drive, and knowledge that my lecturer Rob has provided for me. I did, however, face some challenges, including pushing through the dread that came with working software such Adobe Premiere Pro and being able to make some films.

What are you hoping to explore most in the media industry and where do you hope the course will take you?

I hope to use my documentary “Mull Magic” to help raise funds for climate change. I aim to use these funds to create a documentary in Lapland and eventually become a producer and director of my own films.

Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design

Explain some of the creative process behind your project.

I have explored diverse range of creative techniques to help me create my outcome. I explored techniques such as impasto, mixed media, and scanning. I had used impasto to help create my background to give my work some added texture and used it in some of the flowers in my work. I did also try scanning some flowers where I was hoping I was going to use realist flowers somewhere in my work; however, they did not work out as well as I had hoped.

Did you draw any inspiration from any artists or designers? If so, why?

I had been inspired by Mary Fedden and Francoise Weeks. The style of the non-outlined flowers made them look like they were cartoony, yet realistic in ways that made me inspired to include in my work. I had included Francoise Weeks’ style by having the flowers shape the form of the face/body as she works with plants that she is able to create masks and sculptures.

Other artists I was inspired by were Nastia Fortune and Ivana Besevic. Both are artists who paint faces in unique styles that I found were how I wanted my work to be like.

What have you found to be your strengths and weaknesses on your course?

When starting this course, I did not know what my strengths and weaknesses were. However, throughout the beginning of the course I had found annotations quite challenging. However, when I had annotated more of my work it became easier to explain my work. Artist research was also another weakness of mine as I was not able to explain as to why I had liked their work. One of my strengths is that I use a lot of mixed media and as a result I was able to create my outcome in a style that I wanted it to be.

When did your interest in Art and Design begin?

I had an interest in fine art but I had always wanted to try something more hands-on. I wanted to try Art and Design at the beginning of the summer holidays in 2021 but my passion for Art had started way back in 2017.

What problems did you face in your project and where do you hope that Art and Design will be able to take you in future?

One of the main problems I faced was the main feature of my outcome as it will be a face. I tend to avoid painting the human body as I find it quite challenging. However, as I had wanted to test myself and explore more of the human features for in the future I persevered. Also, throughout the project I had to think about the colour palette I would use and how I was going to connect it to myself. I hope that this course will help me become a tattoo artist.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts What was the thought process behind your current project?

I wanted to create something that I was passionate about and personal to my journey of what led me to becoming a college performing arts student at the age of 25. I was diagnosed with Anorexia when I was 15 and spent the next seven years living in isolation, in and out of hospital. When I began to recover, performance and creative writing really helped me to express emotions that I was unable to articulate, whilst also allowing me to discover a more playful and exciting side of myself that I had lost at such a youthful age. I wanted to raise awareness of the illness, destigmatize the stereotypes and connect with the audience – regardless of whether they had experienced an eating disorder. My passion is acting and writing, so that is how I decided to highlight my work.

Did you feel you were able to orchestrate your ideas as best as possible?

My initial idea was to recreate a specific event in my life in a dramatized acting piece. I wanted to include multiple themes to display just how much the disorder affects the sufferer and the people around them, whilst also exposing how subjective Anorexia can be to each sufferer. I wanted to use a broad spectrum of emotions to show how illness is non-linear and that there are moments of humour, sadness, confusion, or anger. However, due to the size of my class, we were limited to just 10 minutes of stage time so it would not have been feasible for me to include everything that I wanted too. In the end, I decided to create a series of monologues throughout time, beginning from the onset of my illness and ending where I am now. It is a simplistic set up which meant that I could focus more on writing and performance style than scenery and stage directions.

Are there any performing artists or media that inspired your work?

I did my initial research into the representation of mental health in television and film, in particular Korean Dramas since I love their approach to topics. I took inspiration from one of my favourite shows “It’s Okay Not to be Okay” which explores various mental health issues like Autism, PTSD, Depression and Mania. I was inspired that they approached each illness with complete honesty and delicacy, whilst maintaining a sense of rawness in their portrayal. The use of metaphors, imagery and motifs meant that I was able to relate to each character, regardless of whether I was suffering with their issues or not.

I also was influenced by the spoken word artist Blythe Baird, who uses spoken word performance to express her journey with Anorexia. Their use of rhyme and repetition has a significant impact on an audience and gives a moment in time to remember. I like the idea of using how you approach a certain word or sentence, to dictate the effect and meaning it can have over the audience.

What has been a highlight of your time at Fareham College?

Before coming to Fareham College, I was practically living in solitude. At first, I had to learn how to be around people again and how to allow myself to express a side of me that I felt I had lost to my disorder. I am now in my second year, and my confidence has expanded so much since the beginning. I can still remember my first solo singing audition and if my eyes were not closed, I was either stare at the ceiling or wring my hands – just six months later I was playing Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, then a year later Oda Mae Brown in Ghost. I have learnt how to throw myself into new challenges, how to laugh and have fun, despite my insecurities. I am now going to university to study acting at UCA, which is something that I never imagined, and I am not letting anything hold me back. It is never too late to chase after your passion.

What problems did you face in your project?

I found writing the monologues difficult at times, just because of how personal they were and the fact that I had to revisit emotions and memories that I have tried hard to overcome. It was hard to not allow my vulnerability and fear of judgement stampede over what I wanted to articulate, meaning that I was constantly pushing myself to be more honest and rawer. There was also an issue with schedule conflicts with cast members as we were all in multiple performances, so I was not always able to rehearse with a full cast.

However, I did make sure that I stayed connected with them outside of class and was able to organize my time effectively.

When did your interest in the subject begin?

Prior to enrolling at Fareham College and pursuing my interest in performance arts, Anorexia was my life. It took up all the space in my existence and so it was really all I knew.

I have met so many amazing people through treatment and none of their experiences with the disorder were the same as mine or each other's. I always see eating disorders being stereotyped in media and wanted to explore and raise awareness outside of these stereotypes since there are so many great representations of other mental health issues in television, film, and books.

How has Fareham College contributed to your confidence in Beauty Therapy?

Fareham College has helped with my confidence in Beauty Therapy with the support from the teachers we receive in lessons and in our client workshops.

What motivated you to study Beauty Therapy?

I was motivated to study Beauty Therapy as it has always interested me and there are so many different parts to beauty, and I wanted to find which part was most suited for me.

Explain the creative process behind your current project.

Currently we are practicing for our makeup exam.

This has helped me in being creative to develop our own individual makeup looks on our clients to suit their features and preferences.

Where do you see yourself in the beauty industry?

I see myself working in the beauty industry in a salon with my own client base.

What new skills have you developed since being at Fareham College and what problems have you faced in your time here?

Since being at Fareham College I have developed skills such as better communication to clients of all ages.

What goals do you have set?

I have set goals to pass my course and to progress onto Level 3 Beauty Therapy course.

What are you currently working towards?

I have just finished Level 3 Massage Therapy course and I am looking forward to studying Reflexology in September.

Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your current project or in general?

I think all ladies later in life inspire me to create a better life for themselves and their family. I’m a very mature students and to return to education at 49 is hard to do but also very rewarding.

How do you plan to progress after college in the creative industry?

After I have completed the course and completed my qualifications, I would like to work for myself doing holistic treatments and helping people feel relaxed and calm in this crazy world.

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your current project?

My biggest strength is never giving up. The fact I am able to get up and I am healthy enough to do this course is something not everybody can do or is able to do, so however hard it feels tell yourself you can do this!

Have you always been interested in the Beauty & Therapy industry?

Yes, from a teenager I have always had an interest in Beauty & Make-up.

Have you discovered any new skills or techniques whilst at Fareham College?

Whilst studying at Fareham College I have gained lots of experience. The main thing I have learnt is that I can study again at my age; anything is possible!

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Graphic Design

What is your current project about?

For my current project I decided to go with a horror theme as I am a big fan of the genre.

I decided to implement 3D aspects using an anaglyph so when you look through the red anaglyph you will see a completely different image to the blue one. I decided to use this tool to create two juxtaposing images, one being a horrifying creature and the other a nice, happy person.

Have any themes or artists inspired your current project?

One person who has inspired my creations is Insane 51. Insane 51 is an impressive anaglyph graffiti artist, amongst other things as well, but I initially discovered him through his graffiti work. This work has a similar style to what I wanted to create, in his work there is a specific piece in which the red anaglyph reveals a girl and the blue reveals a skeleton. My work was also inspired by horror movies and the culture surrounding the genre as well.

Where do you see yourself in the graphic design industry?

Hopefully I will be creating logos or corporate assets, or be able to find somewhere where I am able to create work that I enjoy.

When did you first show interest in graphic design and why?

I was mostly inspired by my first year of college when I studied music inspired designs. We were making band t-shirts and needed a logo, so I made this gas mask character with the band's name plastered across it. I was very happy with my work and the fact it was used by the band, so since then I carried on slowly developing my skills and carrying out little jobs until I eventually decided to study Graphics 3 years later which has given me the opportunity to learn more than ever before.

Have college resources been able to provide you with as much creative freedom as possible?

I have had a lot of freedom to design whatever I would like, and it is using Adobe products and the excellent resources we have on campus, such as laser cutters, Adobe Illustrator and recently a 3D printer. As a result of using these resources, I have been able to create high quality designs that I love.

What are your creative strengths and weaknesses?

The one skill I am confident with is my use of Illustrator and Photoshop. Since being on the course I have learnt many things that have improved my skills. However, my weakness would be that I am not the best at using Adobe InDesign and I'm not a huge fan of magazine making, so this software wasn’t of great use to me. It did, however, show me what I don’t want to do in the future.

Using Adobe products and the excellent resources we have on campus, such as laser cutters, Adobe Illustrator and recently a 3D printer.

How has Fareham College contributed to your confidence in Beauty Therapy?

Fareham College have contributed to my confidence by opening client workshops where we can complete and practice treatments. The most common treatments would be facials, manicures and pedicures. My lecturers have also helped me be more confident by giving positive feedback after treatments and assignments.

What inspired you to study Beauty Therapy?

I was inspired to study Beauty Therapy because of my passion for creativity. I feel like beauty allows me to express my creative side. I particularly enjoy using my creativity to make inventive and expressive nail and makeup looks.

Explain the creative process behind your current project.

We are currently finishing our make-up assessments. The make-up projects allow us to be creative as we were given different opportunities to complete a look using the college kit and our own make-up as well. The college kit comes with a lot of assorted products for us to trial as well, which is a wonderful use of resources. For our make-up looks, the occasions are Natural, Intense and Special Occasion.

Can you describe one of your favourite nail or make-up looks that you’ve designed?

My favourite nail look that I have done would definitely be chrome nails because they look really effective and are very unique.

Where do you see yourself in the beauty industry?

In the future, I can see myself working in a beauty salon and hopefully having the skills to complete massages and aromatherapy treatments. I would like to be skilled to do them in the future because I am working in a salon at the moment outside of college and they use aromatherapy oils. I also really enjoy learning the different massage techniques.

What new skills have you developed at Fareham College?

Fareham College has helped me develop confidence when speaking with clients and dealing with new people. During my 100 hours work experience I have been able to put to use the skills I have learnt at college.

What hurdles have you faced during this course and what goals do you have set?

During this course I have struggled with some of the theory topics we have to learn, especially anatomy theory, but with help from tutors I have been able to complete all my theory work. My goals in the future are set to focus on eyelash and brow, mainly focusing on the removal of tint and also to be more detailed when giving aftercare advise to clients.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing & Production Arts

What was the inspiration for your current project?

For my current project, we were given the theme of “Fantasy” and I really wanted to dig deeper into the historical ideologies of mythical creatures. As a child, I was obsessed with unicorns and really wanted to recreate my own perception of what fantasy was and the mythical creatures I learned about as a child.

Which MUA's inspire you?

Some MUA’s that I aspire towards are people such as Charlotte Tilbury and Nikkie De Jager.

Amongst the many make-up artists that there are, I think that they are both insanely talented and I aspire to be able to create looks like theirs.

What is a make-up look you would love to professionally create?

I am particularly interested in SFX make-up, the use of prosthetics and fake blood. I would love to be able to create the illusion of a real wound and see people's reactions to my work as it is very validating. I would love to develop my skills to a more professional level and even take them onto film sets and TV shows. It would be a dream come true.

What drew you towards the creative media side of makeup?

I feel that creative media make-up gives me the ability to have a lot more creative freedom with my looks. There is a wide range of content in this course, and I love that I have the opportunity to learn about a vast range of make-up styles. The course has taught me a lot of skills that have boosted my confidence massively and improved techniques that I can use outside of the course as well.

Where do you hope this course can take you?

After completing this course, I hope to begin an apprenticeship or attend University. I think that this would give me more opportunities to travel and discover more about make-up in different cultures and contexts. I hope that this will boost my chances of working on film and TV sets.

What has been the highlight and a downfall of your project?

A highlight of my project would be that I get to experiment with different props and products such as air brushing and body painting, and I am hoping to expand my technique for my second year. I have found that the downfall of my project has been that it is hard to predict what is going to look best whilst in the planning stage. Whilst I may have some good ideas for my piece, it may not actually work until I have tested it out, which can be disheartening when you have put so much passion and thought into my work.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion

What is your current project about?

My FMP is about journey and introspection. I am looking into self-discovery which is based on a film called 'Eat, Pray, Love'. The film is about a young woman who faces hardships in her relationships and turns to travel to rediscover herself amongst unfamiliar cultures. The protagonist visits countries like Italy, India and Indonesia and learns different things about herself in each place.

What fashion icons do you aspire to?

I do not aspire to any fashion icons, as I am trying to navigate my own style and create outfits/garments that have been inspired by my research or things around me. I like to use Pinterest for inspiration and ideas sometimes, either to recreate or build on ideas that other people have shared.

Are there any specific pieces or themes that have inspired your project?

My original idea for my FMP was the journey of nature. I was inspired by the birth and life of plants; how it all begins from a seed and contributes to an everlasting ecosystem that is in a constant of life and death. However, I decided to work with the idea of self-discovery because of the inspiration from “Eat, Pray, Love.” The protagonist's travels to India and Italy inspired me because they are places that I would love to travel to in future.

What has Fareham College taught you about the fashion industry?

Fareham College has taught me that there is more than just making garments when it comes to fashion. When someone says fashion, it is a bit of a grey area because you would just think of clothes but there is more to it. For example, the elements of textiles, media, business, styling, pattern making, accessories, shoes, and more.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I aim to be successful in the fashion industry in places that I have travelled to, creating pieces that have inspired me from visiting each area. I hope to do this by working for a larger fashion corporation or creating a small business of my own.

What was your favourite part of this project?

My favourite part about the project/projects is being able to have the freedom to create what you like without restrictions, not only that but you get to problem solve, being able to do that allows me to have a better understanding of what I am creating and how I made it. My least fluorite part is the annotations and explaining what I am doing with my work as it restricts me from my creative thought, but it is still a requirement for creating a piece so it must be done.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production

What is your current project about?

For my current project, I am creating a 2D animation set in an anthropomorphic city. For the plotline of the animation, a bounty hunter and his teammate are asked to defeat a group of thieves called the Nebula Clan. The genre of the animation is science-fiction based because this is one of my favourite genres of media.

Who do you feel like your work is mostly catered towards?

The style of the animation is catered towards people around the ages of 8 -15, however, the story can be appealing to an older audience, providing that they are interested in sciencefiction. A lot of my other work falls into a similar genre when compared to my final project, so if I were to have an audience, they would be interested in most of my work and be an active audience.

What inspired the themes of your project?

I love superhero films with themes centred around good vs evil, such as Spiderman. There will be themes of loss and mystery in my project, as we explore as the characters explore this strange new world.

What has been a challenge you have faced in this course?

I have needed to spend hours on each of my projects which has been very tiring. However, I have been able to power on through, and get the work completed on time.

When did your interest in Media Production begin, and why?

I’ve always loved watching cartoons, and that motivated me to start animation. Media Production was a step in the right direction for me, so I can learn new techniques which I can use in my projects. I chose to take the Media Production route for my animation because it teaches you more how to create a piece of media as a team, and how to distribute your work efficiently.

How have you found Fareham College in terms of support in the creative industry?

Fareham College has constantly asked if I need support, which makes me feel confident. I know who to turn to if I need help with anything. My lecturers, Greg and Ingrid, have been a great support, and my Tutor Martin has given some guidance and advice throughout my time here.

What are you hoping to explore more in the media industry and where do you hope this course will take you?

I want to continue in the media industry, and I hope to get the opportunity to work in an animation studio, where I can learn how to create professional animation and work with others. Preferably I would like to stick with creating science fiction style animations, but I would be open to trying new genres and ideas in my future career.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion

What are you currently working towards?

I am currently working to create a dress conveying my own interpretation of the word 'journey' and what it means to me.

Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your project or in general?

My main inspiration for my garment is my heritage and culture. I wanted to showcase my growing confidence and appreciation for who I am as a person.

How do you plan to progress after college in the creative industry?

My career goal is to become an entrepreneur, so after college I plan on learning more about the business world and creating my own fashion retail brand.

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your project?

My biggest strength is being patient when creating a product and really trusting the process, this has been extremely helpful when doing tedious tasks including hand embroidery and embellishment. Most of the issues I came across were due to lack of preparation, as I tend to get really excited when creating something and skip over crucial planning stages.

Have you always been interested in the fashion industry?

I have been a very creative and artistic person for as long as I can remember, however it wasn't until maybe the age of 12 that I truly adored fashion and how unlike drawing, I could wear my art and style everywhere for the world to see.

Have you discovered any new skills or techniques whilst at Fareham College?

Being a student at Fareham College has given me the freedom to experiment more with not only what I wear but what I create. I have founded my passion for skills including patchwork and embroidery. I love how I can use these techniques to either create a whole piece or just to add onto something.

Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design

Explain some of the creative process behind your FMP I have explored many different medias in my project. I have worked with clay to sculpt different parts of the brain, for example. I have used my existing sewing skills and improved upon these by sewing grids onto paper then disintegrating the paper with water.

Where did you draw your inspiration from for this project, or your work style in general?

My project was about identity, so I drew my inspiration for this project from my own life story of my medical issues and also from the artists I researched which inspired me to creative work using different materials. The artists that inspired me were Damien Hirst because of the usage of medical drugs in his art work and this relates to my theme because of the medication I take. As I am disabled, Frida Khalo­– an artist who was a disabled - inspired me by showing if you are disabled you can still do art work if you want to.

Gunther Von Hagens work on body structure and the nervous system inspired me to work on veins in the body. Claudia Naen’s textile work inspired me to learn and improve my sewing skills. Lisa Nillson has taught me new skills and ideas with paper and the quilling technique.

What have you found to be your strengths and weaknesses on your course?

My strengths have been my sewing skills and ideas of work to do. My weakness has been the annotation of my work, not knowing if I have written enough about my work or if I have provided enough detail to my words.

When did your interest in Art and Design begin and what is your plan after college and for your future?

I have cross stitched for many years and liked to see my nan’s artwork. After major surgery and losing the use of one leg I felt I needed to take my artistic and sewing skills further and decided to do the Level 2 Art and Design course to follow I would like to do the Level 3 Fashion course to take my design and sewing skills further to work in the fashion industry.

Who has been your biggest support throughout your project?

My biggest support throughout this project has been my lecturers Lorna and Roma. Debbie has also been a great support throughout this project, they helped push me forward and to be strong and confident in the work I do.

Level 2 Technical Diploma in Beauty Therapy

What are you currently working towards?

I'm currently working towards passing my Level 2 Technical Diploma course! I can then enrol on to the Level 3 next year as I would love to expand my skills further.

Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your current project or in general?

The people around me inspire me the most such as family members, tutors, and even my classmates as they are all reaching for their own goal and don't give up.

How do you plan to progress after college in the creative industry?

I plan to work in a salon and further my skills. It would also be amazing to work on a cruise ship one day travelling the world!

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your current project?

My biggest strength would probably be to not be discouraged and to keep on trying. I haven't always had the best grades in school or college but will keep on trying my best.

Have you always been interested in the Beauty Therapy industry?

I haven't always been interested in the beauty therapy industry, but I just kind of went for it and I'm really enjoying it! I have always loved the idea of giving someone a little bit of confidence in themselves.

I've learnt loads of new skills at Fareham College and can't wait to improve and further my skills ready for the Industry!

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design

What are you currently working towards?

I am currently working on a series of self-portraits for my final project. My project theme was ‘Journey’, and through this I am using different art styles to create a journey through my life over the last few years.

Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your current project or in general?

For my work I’m taking a lot of inspiration from a lot of places, mainly film and television that surrounds the theme of change and coming of age. One artist that has heavily influenced my work is the painter Julian Perry. I was able to see an exhibition of his work about global warming and the ongoing change that it is having on our world, and this really helped shape my ideas around change and development in a visual sense.

How do you plan to progress after college in the creative industry?

After this year of my course is over, I'm hoping to progress to the second year and start applying to universities to study fine art and art & design.

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your current project?

One of the biggest strengths that I have found while working on this project is my ability to use different art styles. I wanted to use different techniques for each piece of work and because of this I needed to work on improving myself as an artist and making myself more versatile.

Have you always been interested in Art & Design?

I have not always wanted to peruse art as a career. I initially started my journey at Fareham College studying specialist hair and make-up, but through starting this course I have found my passion and future career.

Have you discovered any new skills or techniques whilst at Fareham College?

Through my time at Fareham College, I have found out so many things about myself and what I am capable of. I have created things that I never thought I was capable of, and I have been able to work with the many talented artists around me to help develop my own art and career.

Level 2 Diploma in Hair & Beauty Skills

What are you currently working towards?

I am working towards passing my Hair & Beauty Skills Level 2 Diploma Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your current project or in general?

No, I have always loved hairdressing and have wanted to be a stylist since I was young.

How do you plan to progress after college regarding the creative industry?

Right now, I am not sure that I will stay in the creative industry sector. I am trying new things and keeping my options open.

Have you discovered any new skills or techniques whilst at Fareham College?

I have learnt lots of new skills whilst being at Fareham College. My new skills that I have enjoyed learning have been my practical hairdressing skills.

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your project?

I am creative and enjoy the practical side of my course. The main problem that I faced with my current project was creating the beehive look on my Mum's hair. The problem that I have faced was I did not put the rollers in the side parting at a 90-degree angle which caused the hair not to curl on top and I could not complete the beehive look.

Have you always been interested in the beauty and hairdressing industry?

I used to practice different hair styles and makeup techniques on my styling heads at home.

Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media Production

What was the thought process behind your current project?

I first thought about making minimalistic posters and that I would ask my lecturer to remind me how to work with vectors again as I wanted to do it for my FMP. For my experiments I used Star Wars characters and once I got the hang of vectorising, colouring and layer work I went on to focus on taking my own photos of people and turning them into vectors for minimalist posters.

This FMP's theme is identity, and I am focusing on the 9 protected characteristics.

Did you feel you were able to create your ideas as best as possible?

I think I had a good chance to do what I wanted because I had learnt it in the course. My lecturer helped me get started with the technique and with my ideas. From fictional characters I moved on to real people, which also shows I can do photography.

Did you face any problems in your project, and if so, how did you overcome them?

If I was struggling with something I would ask for support, and this helped me carry on. For example, my lecturer took time to show me the technique of digital illustration through vectors.

When did your interest in the subject begin?

I had interest in making this type of posters back in units 3 and 4; that is when my Lecturer introduced us to minimalism and graphic design. We worked on poster design and one of the methods was minimalism with vectors, and I liked it. My outcome then was a poster of Squid Games; it was complex and took a long time, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Are there any main media artists that have inspired your work?

I cannot think of a specific person/artist that has inspired me. It is more about the technique that I draw inspiration from.

What has been a highlight of your time at Fareham College?

Being in Media has been the highlight. We have the chance to create and upskill in a welcoming environment.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing & Production Arts

Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your current project or in general?

For my current project, I have found a body painting artist called Craig Tracy rather inspiring.

How do you plan to progress after college in the creative industry?

When it comes to progression within the industry, I plan on taking short courses throughout my gap year to keep my knowledge and skills up to date.

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your project?

I'd say one of my biggest strengths is my special effects make-up work. I'd say the only struggle I've faced during my current project is getting the outcome I wanted with my practical work within the time frame given to complete my look.

Have you always been interested in the specialist make-up industry?

Yes, getting into the specialist make-up industry has been an interest of mine for 5 years now.

Have you discovered any new skills or techniques whilst at Fareham College?

Before joining the course, I did have a limited understanding on the skills and techniques with specialist make-up, but learning the techniques of things such as applying stage make-up and using multiple different materials in SFX makeup to receive different effects are new things I've picked up while studying at the college.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Graphic Design

What is your current project about?

My current project is based on extra-terrestrial study. Over the years many hints have emerged that there might be life beyond Earth. I am designing some of the evidence of alien life that seemed to have increased the prospect of extra-terrestrial entities existing.

Have the college resources provided you with as much creative freedom as you would like?

Very much so, this course at Fareham College is very independent and you truly get to express your creativity. You are left to do your work however you wish to, and the equipment is always at hand.

Have any themes or artists inspired your work?

I have been inspired by 3 artists. The first of them being Eiko Ojala as his work inspires me because of his attention to detail, as well as his ability to summarise complex topics and themes into wellbalanced designs. Ojala’s work utilises digital media and shows new possibilities for paper-art style illustrations. He does this by rendering his illustrations to appear as card that has been sliced and placed together to form a 3D illustration. Another inspiration of mine is Chris Phillips, who creates bright and unique illustrations, as well as animated content.

His animations are quirky, unique, and bright and I admire his witty character driven vector animations. My final inspiration is Keith Haring, who produced the “flying saucer” drawings.

His drawings are illustrated using chalk and are mostly of pyramids, snakes, animal hybrids, and conspicuous technology as well flying saucers.

Since UFO’s are the most associated form of transport for aliens and extra-terrestrials, Keith has inspired me to use them in my own work.

Where do you think you would fit into the graphic design industry?

In the future I hope to do some freelance graphic design work on the side of my architectural career. I like the idea being able to choose whether to take on short or long-term projects with freelance work and being able to be selective with the companies you work with. It is a fantastic opportunity to branch out into new areas rather than staying in one department as it is something that will keep my career interesting.

When did you first show interest in graphic design? and why?

For my GCSE's I studied Photography where I achieved an 8, but I wanted to branch out more creatively and felt that photography and graphic design went hand in hand. Photography artwork will always be categorised under photography, unless there is text combined to support visualising information, then it is graphic design.

I felt like graphic design would be more suited to me because I can do a lot more in the subject overall creatively and improve my skills as a visually communicative artist.

What are your creative strengths and weaknesses?

My main strengths are my enthusiasm as I am always eager to learn new skills and designs to expand my knowledge. Creativity is another one of my main strengths as I am imaginative and like thinking creatively in my projects. I have also learnt to become quite tech-savvy and I have learnt to use digital tools and editing software to create high-quality designs. My communication skills need to improve as I can be shy at times, and this is going to clash with my design career path. I will need to present designs and discuss them and this needs to be improved.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production What is your current project about?

I am currently creating my Final Major Project in my first year of college and have decided to create a documentary about the impact that COVID has had on the performing arts industry.

It is a subject that I have been hoping to expand my knowledge on as I have been a part of the industry since I was 3 when I attended my first dance class. I have always been enamoured with the performing arts and had no idea about the economic aspect that the industry contributed to our country. Before COVID, the performing arts were estimated to contribute an annual amount of £2.7 billion to the UK economy and held over 270,000 jobs alone. I was interested to learn how this changed and discover more about the uncertainty of the financial, creative, and emotional support involved in the performing arts, post pandemic.

Who is your project most catered towards?

During my audience research, I conducted a survey and received a broad range of answers from other Fareham College students. The survey was not aimed at a one demographic, and it was interesting to see out of a vast range of people who would most be interested in my project. I expect that my work would be most catered to anyone who is interested in theatre or the impact on the creative industries during COVID. It has always been important to me to stake my claim in things that I believe to be important, and this was an issue close to my heart that I wanted to be able to share my perspective on. I hope that people interested in my work will appreciate the untold stories of the performing artist industry and workers.

When did your interest in Creative Media Production begin and why?

My interest in media started with my love for Film, TV, and books, but one of my biggest motivators to study the subject was my experience in GCSE Media. When I began studying the subject in year 9, I felt like I had found my niche and had a fantastic teacher who immersed and welcomed me into the world of media. She boosted my drive and determination to go further with my interest in the media industry and my self-confidence as well. As a disabled person, I never wanted to be trapped into a box and Media was a wonderful way to display my intelligence and my passion to prove that it does not hold me back and that there is a beauty in being a minority.

How have you found Fareham College in terms of supporting you and your creative choices?

Everyone has been wonderful, and I have always felt accepted in the environment that I am in. I have found everyone to be approachable and understanding of my differences, whilst also being willing to adapt and cater to my needs as a student with learning difficulties. In terms of creative support, I have a lot of creative ideas which I struggle to manifest into physical form and my teachers and classmates have been incredibly patient and supportive of that which has helped me to be more comfortable in my surroundings and achieve higher grades and work quality.

What has been a challenge you have faced during your time here?

One of my greatest challenges during my time at Fareham College has been the transition between secondary school and college. I came from a small secondary school with around 60 students per year group and have found it to be a huge transition between that and being fully immersed in independent learning with 10x more students in one place. In the past I have found it challenging to process transition and have always had large anxiety around change, so having a fresh start by myself in somewhere that seemed so open, and daunting was a challenge, but I have found the people here to be kinder and more accepting than I could have imagined.

Where do you hope this course will take you and what do you hope to explore in future?

This course has taught me a lot about myself as well as the media industry. In the future, I hope to be able to go to university and study TV Production, hopefully at Solent University in particular. I want to expand my knowledge of editing as I only began learning about that in September using Premiere Pro and tutorials from my teachers and other students. The course I hope to study has great facilities, equipment and industry connections which is something that I am looking forward to exploring so I can better navigate my place in the industry when I have completed my degree.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion

What is your current project about?

I am currently working on my Final Major Project, and I have chosen to focus on pantomime costumes, in particular for the Wizard of Oz. I have decided to create a Dorothy inspired costume, which incorporates techniques such as Shibori, an ancient Japanese resistantdyeing technique. I have also incorporated my own digital design printed on fabric and hand embroidery techniques.

Who inspires you creatively?

As I aspire for a career in the costume design industry, my inspiration is Vicky Gill. Vicky Gill is a BAFTA winning costume designer for TV and Film.

She is most well-known for creating costumes for Strictly Come Dancing. I was fortunate enough to see her work at the Manchester BBC Studios, and I was taken back by the level of detail that goes into the dresses for the show.

Are there any specific costumes or shows that have inspired your project?

I have analysed the key features of Judy Garland’s Dorothy costume in her iconic role in The Wizard of Oz. I have also been recently able to watch The Wizard of Oz as a pantomime at the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth. I enjoyed being able to see the characters costumes first-hand, and how certain costumes have been adapted to the performance style.

What has Fareham College taught you about the Fashion Industry?

Even though I hope to pursue a career in costume, during my fashion course I have been able to learn about marketing and media in the fashion industry. This would be useful for the future if I set up my own costume company.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In ten years' time I hope to be working in the costume industry and be fairly established in the fashion community. I also aim to have a degree in costume studies.

What was your favourite part of your project?

My favourite part about my current project is the creative process of it all. I enjoyed every step of the way, from undertaking the initial experimentation to compiling my ideas into a final garment.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production

What is your current project about?

My current project is a short film entitled “Death Comes Calling.” It is in the style of a Film Noir and follows a group of six people who commit a bank robbery. They then quickly find out that an unknown presence is killing them off one by one.

The storyline goes hand in hand with the pessimistic tone of Film Noir productions.

How have you found Fareham College in terms of supporting you and your creative ideas?

Overall, Fareham College has been helpful in terms of pushing my ideas forward. They are always encouraging new and fresh ideas among their students. They have given me more confidence in terms of my hopes to go into the Media Industry.

Who do you feel your target audience is for your work?

I would say that 16–20-year olds are my target audience as the production looks more into the darker side of humanity and there are some ethical questions throughout the plotline. This age group is at an age where they are discovering their morals, and the plotline helps them to think deeper about what they may be.

What part of the Media Industry do you hope to explore the most?

I hope to go into Theatre. Not so much the performing aspect, but the running of a theatre and completing behind the scenes work. I especially would like to work with lighting, as I find that to be the most promising and enjoyable aspect of my course. I dream to be a Head Lighting Director, or something like that in future.

What inspired the theme of your project?

I have always liked the aesthetics of the time between the 1940’s and 1950’s, and Film Noir is the perfect way to demonstrate that on screen.

What has been a challenge you have faced on your course?

It is understood that COVID-19 has had a substantial impact on the college experience and the course that is on offer. Unfortunately, being a student on a hands-on Media Production course has meant that I have missed a few opportunities in my time at Fareham. However, thankfully the course is getting back on track to how it was supposed to be.

When did your interest in Media Production begin and why?

I have been performing with a local theatre group (Fareham Musical Society) since an incredibly early age. I have always enjoyed performing and being able to create my own stories, which goes hand in hand with my love for film culture. I thought that Media Production would be the best choice for me and my future.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music What are you currently working towards?

I am currently working towards a Level 3 Diploma in Music Production and Performance. We as a band have done multiple events so far in the year including playing at the popular music venue The 1865 in Southampton. Additionally, I am now working towards our last final major project which is our summer gig here at Fareham College where my band will be performing at 30-minute set.

Would you say anybody has inspired you either regarding your project or in general?

My biggest inspiration is the passion of other musicians and their dedication to the subject and their instruments, seeing other musicians enjoy what they do best gives me my motivation to push myself forward.

How do you plan to progress after college in the creative industry?

After I complete my 2 years here, I plan on taking the level 4 HNC qualification in Music which includes a teaching qualification. This path provides the right knowledge for me to be able to teach instrumental lessons. Furthermore, I would love to continue doing gigs and gaining new experiences to learn about the music industry.

What are your biggest strengths, and did you face any problems during your project?

I’d like to think that one of my biggest strengths is teamwork/team leading and I feel that I am very conscientious and dedicated towards my projects and learning. Although, I do face problems like lack of confidence, or some days feeling less creative, but my strengths help me to overcome those problems.

Have you always been interested in music?

I have always been involved in the creative industry since a young age and I’ve always had an ear for music, I started out with dance and musical theatre, until I found that I had the passion to make and play music.

Ever since I picked up the bass my interest in music grew.

Being creative, by definition, means to form something new and valuable - so you can understand the importance of having a foundation on which you can learn what is new and valuable to you as a creative individual, and the many ways in which you can present this to others through your talents. To be able to create something that is new and valuable to you, is to put something subjective into the world, which takes great confidence. Confidence is something which we construct ourselves, to bring about the best version of how we live our lives and what we put out into the world. As a student, having a teacher who believes in you and your decisions as a creative, is so important in pursuing a creative future. Young adults are often encouraged to do what makes them money, rather than what they love or what makes them happy, and it is all too easy as a teacher to promote this ideology as well.

However, whilst being at Fareham College I have never felt that what I hope to do is unrealistic or unreachable and several students have spoken about the self-confidence that their teachers have helped to expand on.

With talented students and high-tech facilities, Fareham College has proven repeatedly to be the perfect runway for students to set flight on their creative careers. The Bishopsfield Road Campus has become a home for creative talent amongst students of all ages, from budding filmmakers to accomplished beauticians. This academic year of students have had the opportunity to experience creative education almost identical to that of pre-pandemic students. On-site learning is such a crucial factor for creatives and being able to have a place with facilities to aid growth and development has a huge contribution to their future.

Since joining Fareham myself, I have been astounded with what they have to offer, and so have other students that I have been in discussion with. It has been made clear through the interviews in this magazine that Fareham College has not just taught students about the creative industry, but where they can fit into it and how they can get there.

The Creative Industries within the UK has faced its trials and errors over previous years. With venues having to close their doors, creative types have not had a place to express themselves and their abilities outside of their own homes; in particular those from music and performing arts backgrounds. In some cases, this has worked out beautifully for artists to boost their presence in the digital world and in turn, internationally. Artists of all kinds have had to adapt to different circumstances during this time and find new ways to be able to explore their passions. Platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, SoundCloud and Spotify have been a lifeline for developing artists to still experiment how people will take to their creations, without having a physical realm to do so. There has been a whole new market created for online commission pieces, film productions and the on the rise phenomenon of Non-Fungible Tokens. NFT’s are an emerging form of income for video producers, artists, and musicians and are believed to be a wonderful way to invest. So, you may be thinking, how has all of this affected the physical side of the creative industry in the UK?

After the effects of COVID-19, the Arts Council UK launched the “Culture Recovery Fund”. This is “an unprecedented fund that has been put in place to tackle the crisis affecting our most loved cultural organizations and heritage sites.” For independent creative companies, establishments, and industry workers the fund bought some relief and hope for more financial stability in the future of the UK creative industry. Through the DCMS (Department for Digital, Cultural, Media and Sport), I was shocked to discover just how much revenue the UK creative industry brought to the economy prior to the pandemic. For example, in 2019 alone the industry contributed an estimated £115.9 billion to the UK economy. That is 5.9% of the economy as an entirety - so you can understand from a financial point of view the importance of funds like the culture recovery fund.

Across the country there were 2.1 million jobs held in the creative industry in 2019, and it is now estimated that there are just below that number of jobs existing in the industry at 2.04 million people working under the creative sector. It has also been noted that IT, software, and computer servicing jobs have been the biggest contributor to the industry since the development of technology over recent years. Products such as video games, social media, graphic designing, online media production, etc. - are in incredibly high demand for creation and distribution. It has been estimated in recent years that the general gross value contributed by these job roles has been up to £47 billion, accounting for 53% of growth in the total gross value of the creative industries between 2010 and 2019.

The UK creative industries are progressing increasingly. By 2030 it is estimated that there will be one million new jobs in this sector, which is certainly achievable as the number of jobs in Creative Industries are growing at 3x the rate of the entirety of the UK workforce. Creatives have used their passion and originality to boost the sector back to being almost identical to what it was at pre-pandemic levels. It was stated in late 2021 by the Creative Industries Council that there had been £151 millions of co-investment in creative programmes and clusters, which encourages foreign investment into UK creative companies. Therefore, creates new and high value jobs for the creative people of the UK, leading to a brighter future for young creative students such as the ones at Fareham College.

It is my hope, and I am sure of many others, that the creative sector continues to boom the way it is now to be able to secure young creatives a place where they can fit their craft into the world. With more opportunities on the horizon comes more confidence amongst young people that they will be able to do what they love and do it successfully. There has never been a better time to be a creative student than now, and it has never been more important that they are able to explore themselves and their options for the future. Young people should grab their creativity by the tail and nurture it into a beautiful and flourishing career, whilst there is more space being made for them. Being in creative education is a wonderful way to aid the growth of this process and Fareham College has favourably been planting seeds to sprout into a bright and colourful future.
