nurag Agarwal is a man who started his life from very humble beginnings, runs a Rs. 375 crore business, treats his employees like they are his own family, believes in nature, trust and building relationships ahead of generating revenues. He credits his success not to himself but to others. His father who imbibed in him the value of ethics and his mentors who guided him to be a professional and his colleagues too who have been with him in this journey for a long time. In an informal interview (virtual) with Anurag Agarwal, Managing Director, Natural Remedies, Senior Consulting Editor Kajal Dobhal Business Connect understood his journey, his challenges, choices and the building of Natural Remedies from scratch. We all have heard of this ancient saying, “A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step”. It applies for me too though I can also say it was literally the case for me. My grandfather had started this business in the 1950s and I was sent to then Bangalore (now Bengaluru) to build the family business of herbal products. Those days, south India was quite different than as you see it today. It was a new and exciting beginning for me that I had embraced when I was asked to move to Bangalore to build the business in South India. Later, western India was added to my portfolio after seeing my success in South India. The business that was started by my grandfather saw many twists in the 1990s. There was a family split in the business in 1996 and my father was handed over the southern part of the business as his share. Undeterred, we started the human health export division and renamed it Natural Remedies in 1998. It was the start of a new journey. My experiences have taught me about the power of focus. The 80:20 Pareto principle helped me to focus on the things which matters the most, supported by a very able and committed team. We all constantly evolve and support each other in embarking on new activities to expand and grow the business.

It was a challenging time for us. Though we had a sizeable number of years of experience under our belt, we were left with limited resources and a shortage of funds. By God’s graceand tremendous support from our business mentors, we managed to push through those tough times.

As the CEO & MD of Natural Remedies, I don multiple roles. I have to be a leader, a visionary, a decision maker, a manager and also manage my family.

NATURAL REMEDIES WAS BUILT BRICK BY BRICK Natural Remedies was built slowly over time. Our core values, vision and mission stood us through good time and bad times. Emphasis on treating employees like family was an integral part of our business growth. If our employees are happy, our business will grow was evident. We grew from Rs. 20 crores to Rs. 375 crores in flat 18 years.

“If we take care of people’s aspirations, trust will continue to grow among the teams resulting in robust business performance. Over here, we demonstrate trust leadership on every occasion therefore, people are happy to stay with us and contribute for mutual growth,” asserts Anurag.

We have evolved over the past 20 plus years. We brought in professionals who shared similar thoughts that was in sync with ours. They aligned themselves to our way of working. By giving our heads of departments a free hand to shape the destiny of the company, we created departments and capable teams who maintained professionalism and ensured we did ethical businesses. We also encouraged and supported our employees to reskill and evolve as we believe it is important for everyone to grow.

THE ON-GOING PANDEMIC AND THE NEW NORMAL The on-going pandemic has resulted in a lot of chaos. The global economy has shrunk, and India too has been affected. Though it pains us that many have lost their lives, the adage, health is wealth is finally being understood by one and everyone including the government. As an employee first company, we have made it clear for our employees to fully utilize and adapt to embracing technology to the maximum. We have made a gradual shift to a ‘Physital’ approach. Physital is a combination of physical and virtual meetings. To ensure everyone is connected from remote places across India, NRPL has launched the Virtual Connect and Virtual Universe. “A V-LEAD program, anyone in NRPL can get in touch with our core partners using the latest technology. Be its virtual call or virtual walk-through of our R&D facility, we have successfully implemented this,” explains Anurag. Furthermore, the company has made participating in webinars the norm while, their robust IT team is pursuing different technologies to identify the best of technology that can further enhance the company’s growth and employee performance. R&D IS THE KEY Natural Remedies has a strong Research & Development team in place, and he attributes to the success of the company largely to the products that have been developed by his team here. “R&D plays a crucial role in providing new solutions to multiple unmet health needs be it of animals or humans. By adding trial data to validate the efficacy of our products and sharing this with our customers helps us in our stand also adds value eventually,”.

for our growth was this policy that we followed. Our employees are our most cherished resource. Like how a farmer loves his produce, we love our employees. We treat them with utmost respect and our work culture reflects what our Vision, Mission and Values are. We take efforts to imbibe the Vision, Values & Competencies when an employee joins us. Understanding these professionals come from different backgrounds, we make it a point that people understand our culture and get comfortable in imbibing the same, understanding how it supports their life journey. There are Personal Transformation groups that help assist our 500 plus employees in learning, understanding, and practicing the company’s values and competencies while performing daily work. “We develop and nurture our employee’s talent via NRPL Talent Development Program. This program consists of identifying, nurturing, developing, and sustaining talent across all the levels and business units. Some of our initiatives under people development area are the High- Flyers program, Emerging leaders club, Coaching and Mentoring,” explainedAnurag. Following these winning strategies, allows NRPL to have an open-door culture where transparency is a given. Every employee has unrestricted access to their respective line managers, cross functional managers,HR and to me in case of any concern or query.

CUSTOMER FIRST… Though this is said by every company in the world, we at Natural Remedies follow it differently. For us, all our products are derived after understanding the customers needs and requirements. At Natural Remedies, right from the procurement of plants and herbs to maintaining quality, safety and consistency, our products talk. Unlike other manufacturing processes, there are high degrees of challenges that we undergo as we deal in the phytogenic space. We have built our expertise around overcoming these challenges thus, creating a strong customer base and product development using scientific validations. …AND HAPPY EMPLOYEES TOO When we had restarted our lives with Natural Remedies, my father told me, take care of your employees and they will take care of your business. One of the key aspects

“We encourage all employees to share ideas, concerns and feedback related to their job roles and professional life,” He Commented. IT IS REWARDING FOR EMPLOYEES ALSO Our employees are rewarded and recognized at every step of their career with us. At NRPL, fun filled activities, innovation, work life balance for our employees, long term incentives,

performance-based incentive, the concept of GEM (Going the extra mile) and pilot projects ensure there is a healthy cross functional collaboration at every level. Employees from various functions are encouraged to come out with collaborative execution ideas for the pre-defined business goals and areas defined in the individual/team goal sheets that are in turn aligned to Annual Operating Goals. All employees are encouraged to come up with GEM projects which are in line with well-defined key goals of the organization, that may have a revenue, cost, quality, timeline, or process impact on the business. These projects could be in line with AOP (Annual Operating Plan)& Long-term strategic plan. WORK LIFE BALANCE Anurag proudly points out that his team has always been discovering and creating ways for the company to mentor every individual to live as per our organizational values. The results are evident when there is a transformation both in their professional life and personal life as well. This very thought of his employees who are family to him lead a happy professional & personal life too is proof enough for Anurag that he is in the right path. KEY TAKEAWAYS In the past 35 years of running businesses, I have always followed what I learnt from my family. Be it my grandfather who instilled values in us to my father who strongly advised to run our business the ethical way. Take care of your employees and they will take care of your business was a mantra that I understood and followed. All these values that I cherish have played a very pivotal role in growing and developing the organization to what it is today.

Completing the interview, an energetic Anurag’s advice to emerging leaders is, “Business should be done with the spirit to serve and add value to the customers and the society. Profit and growth will happen as an outcome eventually!”

Success Story

The Success Story of CEO & Co-Founder

I had a strong aspiration to invent something from early childhood. And I had seen myself as a businessman when I was 12 years old. Since then, I developed an interest in learning about the business world.

Larry Page At the age of 25, Larry Page, one of the youngest well-known American Entrepreneur, having a net worth of over 100 billion USD as of 2021, co-founded Google Inc. with Sergey Brin in 1998 and served as the parent company’s Alphabet’s CEO until December 2019, is now on the board of directors and a majority shareholder. How did Larry Page transform his business idea into one of the world’s most profitable corporations? Lawrence Edward Page, the most successful internet entrepreneur, and computer scientist has an inspiring stunning success tale from which entrepreneurs can learn. Page and Brin created the internet’s most commonly used algorithm with the aim of “organizing the world’s knowledge and making it freely accessible and useful.” Larry Page coined the term “PageRank” to describe his algorithm. Having been born on March 26, 1973, to parents Dr. Carl and Gloria Page, a family with a greater fascination with technology, he has always been drawn to computers, artificial intelligence, and creativity. This had a huge impact on his future professional life. Page grew up surrounded by mathematics and its products and always dreamt of starting his own business rather than working for someone else.

He studied computer engineering at Stanford University, following in his parents’ footsteps. During his studies, he met Sergey Brin, with whom he cofounded Google, a search engine that ranked results based on page popularity and went on to become the world’s most popular search engine. The term “googol” comes from a very large number written as one followed by 100 zeros, which represents the vast universe of data that the Google search engine was created to explore. Page’s field of interests included renewable energy technologies and philanthropy. Being visionary, recently he has invested in Tesla Motors and advocates for the use of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. FAMILY, EDUCATION AND EARLY LIFE Larry Page married Lucinda Southworth, a biomedical informatics research scientist, on December 8, 2007. The couple has two children (The First child born in 2009, the second child born in 2011). In 2009, Page earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University. Earlier, Stanford University awarded him a Master’s degree in Computer Science. After completing his high school studies at East Lansing High School in the year 1991, Page graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering. He studied music composition and used to play the flute. Nikola Tesla, the physicist, and inventor was his childhood hero. He finished his education at Okemos Montessori School in 1979. He had a lot of computers and science magazines in his house as he was born into a family of scientists in Michigan, the United States of America. ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY • 2019: In December 2019, Larry Page stepped down as CEO of Alphabet. • 2015: In August, Page and Brin announced the formation of a new parent company called “Alphabet.” Page was named CEO of the new company. The company included Google giant and Android, Chrome, Google+, and YouTube. • 2011: Lary Page was made CEO in January. • 1998: The project was renamed Google in September. • 1996-1998: Page and Brin decided to integrate their project as a company. The duo raised funds from family and friends to buy some servers and rent the famous garage in Menlo Park, California similar to Apple and Amazon. Susan Wojcicki, who later became a Google senior vice president and is now the CEO of YouTube, owned the space. Andy Bechtolsheim, Sun-microsystems, co-founder financed this company by writing a cheque for $100,000. • 1996: For a few months, the duo developed a search engine named “Black Rub” that ran on Stanford servers. • 1995: Page worked with Sergey Brin on search engine algorithm research during his Ph.D.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION • 2021: Secured 8th position in the Forbes list of “Billionaires 2021”. • 2020: Secured 8th position in the Forbes list of 400 Wealthiest Americans. • 2019: Secured 10th position in the Forbes list of “Billionaires 2019”. • 2019: Page was named as 12th-richest person in the world. • 2018: Secured 10th position in Powerful people in the world. • 2017: Secured 5th position in the list of the World’s 100 richest Tech billionaires. • 2004: Page was named “Persons of the Week” on ABC World News Tonight. • 2004: Page and Brin received Marconi Prize. • 2002: Page and Brin were named in the MIT technology review TR100 for being the top 100 investors. • 2002: Page was named as Global Leader for tomorrow by “The Economic Forum”. LARRY PAGE QUOTES • The ultimate search engine will know everything there is to know about the universe, and it would always give you the correct answer. We’re still a long way from that. • You get a better result if you can run the business more collaboratively because you have more bandwidth and testing and balancing going on. • We don’t have as many managers as we could, but having a few is preferable to having too many. • In essence, we want to organize the world’s knowledge and make it universally available and useful. • To grow the concept, you don’t need a 100-person business. • The Star Trek machine seems to be uninteresting. They ask it random questions, and it mulls over the answers for a while. We should do better, in my opinion. Today, Google, with more than 2, 00,000 employees, is the world’s famous internet company and the most commonly used search engine; the journey has been an adventure. Larry Page is the man who turned his dreams into reality and is a real superstar entrepreneur to pay attention.

or once in our life, we have all been into research laboratories as a student or professional. And there is a common thing that catches our attention, laboratory glassware. More than their unorthodox shapes, these borosilicate items are designed for precise volumetric measurements. Nowadays, almost every company has a quality control/research wing that requires laboratory glassware for proper quality testing. This is where ASGI India comes in. The Company has 5 decades of awardwinning history in supplying customized laboratory glassware across India. Whether it is a Pharmaceutical Company, Academic Lab, Govt. Research Lab, or any other scientific research body, ASGI promises an integrated laboratory experience.

Abhishek Agarwal Managing Director

A PARAGON OF THE MARKET

ASGI offers a variety of industrial-grade glassware, ranging from Calibrated Volumetric Glassware, Amber Glassware, Interchangeable Joints Glassware, Sintered Glassware and Customized Glassware. But how is it different from anyone else? The answer lies in its quality and standard. ASGI’s glassware are blown by trained scientific blowers to ensure uniform thickness and shape and accurate calibration. Its products are fabricated using Borosilicate glasses for better resistance against Acids, Salt Solutions & Organic solvents. The Company makes significant investments in calibration laboratories, plants and machinery. It has a team with valuable pedagogy who meet clients and take their feedback to be incorporated in the products thus, keeping clients at the centre of the strategy. ASGI is headquartered in Agra with two manufacturing plants. It has branches in Mumbai and Ahmedabad and an offshore location in London. ASGI is the fourth largest manufacturer of lab glassware in India and exports in 5 nations too.

THE ONE BEHIND THE SIGNIFICANT GROWTH

Initially, ASGI was a family business of Mr Abhishek Agarwal. As the family’s 2nd generation, he had an obsessive interest in glassware since his school days. “My drive for KAIZEN (Continuous Improvement) and my ambition made me introduce necessary innovations, machinery and equipment to enhance quality and design of my glassware”, affirms Mr Agarwal.

introduced automated laser machines for the calibration of glass to ensure zero error. To sum up, ASGI spends considerable time in R&D, improving quality and foster trust amongst users. It also tries to educate clients on the quality of its glassware and to keep them from compromising on quality. Such practices not only increase satisfaction level but also encourages the team to devise new designs. The R&D team keeps the Company amended to trends and innovations. This aids in making quick decisions on which technology to include that is compatible with the Company’s existing infrastructure.

And his ambition and drive earned significant recognition over time. Under his stewardship, ASGI won the “Bharat Vikas Ratan Award (2008-09),” for being a constant innovator. Mr Agarwal is a very meticulous leader and is known for his discipline in commitments. Also, he keeps an open mind for suggestions from teammates along with innovations and quality. His attention to quality reflects upon ASGI as it conforms to international standards and follows all industry-regulated manufacturing practices.

MILESTONES IN THE ROAD

Passion and innovation are the two important pillars of ASGI. Once, it was one of the handful manufacturers of scientific glassware in India. But today, ASGI is commemorated as the place where “Art meets Science”. The Company has grown to become one of the creative pioneers having innovative infrastructures. Mr Agarwal embraces this as his biggest achievement, for he successfully mechanized 75% of manufacturing practices, which incurred 4 times the turnover of previous years. His leadership has helped ASGI partner with several eminent foundations from the private and public sectors.

CLIENT SATISFACTION – HEART OF THE BUSINESS

“Customer service shouldn’t just be a department, it should be the entire company.” --Tony Hsieh And it is what runs in everyone’s veins at ASGI. The Company is on a mission to ensure that all Indian laboratories are well-stocked with scientific glassware. And not to mention, the unwavering trust and positive reviews have kept ASGI keep moving. The Company houses an equally dedicated team that keeps the wheels moving and the engines running. Mr Agarwal possesses a great love for teamwork and conducts regular brainstorming sessions with his team, including glassblowers and users, for new ideas.

Alongside, Mr Agarwal has shaped concerns regarding sustainable developments. ASGI practices Rainwater harvesting in its factories and has solar panels to reduce its carbon footprints.

PLANS FOR THE ROAD AHEAD

Although having a preferable position in every quality/ research lab in India, ASGI has set its mark high-up. It aims to open 2 stock points/warehouses in states down south & east to reduce the delivery time. The laboratory glassware market projects a tremendous surge in the foreseeable future. The growth will be fostered by academic institutions thereby, showcasing a scope for ASGI. Besides this, ASGI plans to spearhead the global market. With a strategic position in London, it plans to leap in other developed nations and have a worldwide leading position.

“I believe in sharing my vision and setting up a clear goal and achieve it through teamwork,” says Mr Agarwal. The culture encourages everyone to keep pushing to their goals. While maintaining an engaging culture, the director doesn’t disavow the concept of work-life balance. Of course, people who wish to work extra hours to ensure the deadline are praised but not forced. Employees are known for their honesty and integrity, innovative ideas, conflict resolution, problem-solving abilities. They enjoy monetary remuneration for completing targets, and every achievement is commemorated to keep everyone enthusiastic.

A PARTING NOTE FOR ENTREPRENEURS

“Allow yourself to be a beginner. No one starts off being excellent. Confidence is the key, if you don’t believe in yourself then nobody else will. With my experience I conclude if it’s important to you. You will find a way. If not, you will find an excuse,” Abhishek Agarwal.

PRODUCTS WITH DISTINCT PROPERTIES

Be it consumable, infra, automobile, chemical, dairy, and so on, every product passes simultaneous quality checkpoints at labs that should be equipped with accurately calibrated glassware. However, users often face breakages of glassware resulting in accidents and wastage of chemicals – This is an indispensable concern that ASGI prioritizes above all else. It introduced rubber rings and increased the body’s thickness giving it a sturdy body to take mechanical shocks. And if that isn’t enough, ASGI has

Thinking Digitally! “I feel out of the place often” His wrinkled face tells us about the illustrious and long journey of his career. Thomas is one of those professionals overwhelmed with the “digital” buzzword. Digitalscape looks confusing if you view it through its technical languages and versions. However, if you explore it to do something meaningful, you can make it. For example, today’s cars have evolved technologically, and there is no way you can learn how to make or fix the car, but you are still in the driving seat. You can choose where you want to go with it.

My digital journey started as a “fun project” in 2000 with online yellow pages. The idea was simple, how can we make all the information available on yellow pages online so that everyone could use it? As far as I can recall, back in the days, the internet was slow (56kpbs), and its penetration was limited, so we dropped the idea of pitching it to an investor, but we were young. People of my generation were still getting accustomed to online chat rooms and configuring official email- Netscape. To be a digital thinker, you don’t need to know any of its languages like JAVA, C++, HTML, PYTHON or understand the various configurations of a server and its operating system. What matters is your understanding of why and where to use digital technology. Like any other technology, digital technologies are applied to do three things, 1. 2. 3.

TRIDIV DAAS

Founder, Creative Factor solutions. The Pandemic not only accelerated the digital transformation, it also has guided us to discover gaps“problem statements”.

Solve a problem - just like my idea of online yellow pages. To reduce human effort- make it easier, like online shopping. To deliver an experience - like the OTT platforms.

One such unique gap was discovered through one of our consulting projects at Creative Factor. Our client overtly relied on one-to-one sales meetings to drive their sales funnel. With lockdowns imposed across the country and world, business meetings came to an abrupt halt. Many organisations found their sales team largely ineffective. It was an excellent opportunity for us. Our eureka moment happened when we realised that the company website is a valuable real estate that had visitors. So we began thinking about how to integrate online marketing, video conferencing, and sales presentation. And that is precisely what we did. We hosted several thought leadership webinars, social and online advertising to drive more traffic to the website. We changed the communication style to conversational. We also included sales videos for every category as if the sales team is right there. It featured their sales team for authenticity and human touch. We added new tools that schedule meetings with the sales team from the website and even have video conferencing with just a click of a button.

If you notice our world, it gives a fair idea about how digital technologies have enabled us. Digital technologies will continue to play a pivoting role in the future, so “digital thinking and thinkers” will be valuable. Imagine what would have happened if we didn’t have digital conferencing

My understanding of the digital world is theoretical, and I have invested my time learning about these technologies. I focus on how digital technologies are deployed or what more can we expect from these platforms. I believe that our career had begun with skills, we’ve grown with our knowledge, and now is the time to excel with ‘digital’ wisdom. www.businessconnectindia.in | Vol. 4 | Issue 1 August 2021 INDIA
