Performing Arts Design

The performing arts play a critical role in developing future-ready skills. That’s why we design environments where every student can find their voice.

Fanning Howey’s thought leaders understand how lighting, acoustics and space combine to create a great performance. However, we take performing arts design a step further. We design for the needs of other academic programs and community groups, as well as the core functions of theater, music and dance.

Our expertise covers every aspect of a modern performing arts curriculum, from the optimal stage proscenium to specialty furniture packages. We also partner with specialists in acoustics and theaters to bring the best thinking to every project.

Creekside Middle School Performing Arts Center

Carmel, IN

A 585-seat auditorium anchors the performing arts complex and provides a dramatic area for school productions, performances, community meetings, and other activities.

Adjacent to the auditorium, students have access to a music suite with rooms for choir, ensemble, orchestra and band. The performing arts wing is removed from the rest of the building to decrease noise and distractions and to allow multiple after-hours activities to occur simultaneously.

Fishers High School Performing Arts Center

Fishers, IN

More Shakespeare than Bach, the Fishers High School Performing Arts Center is designed to specifically support theatrical performances.

The creation of this new venue gives the district a matched pair of auditoriums: one dedicated to musical performance and one for theater.

Architects addressed the focus on theatrical performances by creating a warm, intimate venue that seats up to 950. A thrust stage combined with wrap around seating brings the audience closer to the stage, making sure that there is not a bad seat in the house. A walkable tension grid extends over the front of the house, providing a multitude of lighting configurations.

Olentangy Berlin High School Performing Arts Center

Lewis Center, OH

The 809-seat auditorium at Olentangy Berlin High School takes a functional and economical approach to supporting school and community events.

Design of the auditorium provides the essential components of a modern performing arts curriculum. Highlights include a full working stage, full stage wings on each side, a full-fly loft, a scene shop, a storage area and a drama classroom that doubles as a greenroom.

The economical design includes a sloped floor, instead of a stepped floor, to reduce costs. Cost savings are also realized by a one-stepdown orchestra area, which keeps orchestra members out of the audience’s view during performances, but without the need for a full orchestra pit.

Performing Arts Center

Nord Anglia’s focus on educating the whole student is found in the design of spaces for the arts.

A partnership with The Juilliard School resulted in an embedded arts curriculum. Design of the new school supports the curriculum through a Performing Arts Center with a 600-seat theatre, a black box theatre, choral rooms, a dance studio and keyboard and strings laboratories. Designed as Fanning Howey + House Partners, a joint venture.

School for Creative and Performing Arts

Cincinnati, OH

Cincinnati’s new School for the Creative and Performing Arts houses some of the most technologically-advanced theater and recording spaces in the Midwest.

The school includes a commercial-style, 750-seat theatre and 300-seat recital hall. The main theater, with its elaborate woodwork, large stage and great sight lines makes every seat the best seat in the house. Serving 1,350 students, the building has ample rehearsal space, professional grade dance studios, naturally lit art studios, music practice rooms, galleries, gathering areas and other facilities necessary to offer a learning environment designed specifically for the arts.

Princeton Performing Arts Center

Princeton students and community members have a dramatic new place to enjoy the arts, thanks to the school’s new auditorium.

The 1,000-seat auditorium is part of Viking Village, a community use venue that connects the new Princeton Middle School and the new Princeton High School. The auditorium is part of a performing arts suite that includes multi-purpose rooms, a band room, an orchestra room and vocal music spaces.

Charlotte Performing Arts Center

Charlotte, MI

Built as an addition to Charlotte High School, the new Performing Arts Center is a valuable community resource.

The 825-seat venue acts as a true civic theater and attracts visitors throughout the county, state, and nation. In its first few years of use, the center has already played host to a variety of nationally-known productions, regional performances, and school district events.

The main theatre includes an orchestra pit, cushioned stage floor, climate-controlled storage, professional-quality acoustical engineering, a high-capacity electrical system, and video projection capability on a large screen. Support facilities include seven practice rooms, men’s and women’s dressing rooms, and instructional areas.

The state-of-the-art building was designed in collaboration with two of the nation’s top theater consultants: Schuler Shook and Kirkegaard Associates.

Olivet Performing Arts Center

Olivet, Michigan

The Olivet Performing Arts Center acts as the community theatre within Olivet, Michigan. The venue provides residents with an intimate location for a variety of productions, including works by civic theatre groups.

The design of the 560-seat theatre focuses on creating connections between the audience and performers. The compact configuration keeps nearly all seats within 60 to 65 feet of the stage, the ideal distance for preserving the visual and aural quality of the performances. Despite the theatre’s compact size, the venue still maintains the volume of space needed to provide the best possible acoustics.

The Performing Arts Center features a full complement of support spaces. Highlights include an orchestra pit, dressing rooms, an expansive rehearsal room and a beautiful lobby which also acts as an art gallery and substantial spaces for storage.
