Performing Arts Design The performing arts play a critical role in developing future-ready skills. That’s why we design environments where every student can find their voice. Fanning Howey’s thought leaders understand how lighting, acoustics and space combine to create a great performance. However, we take performing arts design a step further. We design for the needs of other academic programs and community groups, as well as the core functions of theater, music and dance. Our expertise covers every aspect of a modern performing arts curriculum, from the optimal stage proscenium to specialty furniture packages. We also partner with specialists in acoustics and theaters to bring the best thinking to every project.
School for Creative and Performing Arts Cincinnati, OH
Cincinnati's new School for the Creative and Performing Arts houses some of the most technologically-advanced theater and recording spaces in the Midwest. The school includes a commercial-style, 750-seat theatre and 300seat recital hall. The main theater, with its elaborate woodwork, large stage and great sight lines makes every seat the best seat in the house. Serving 1,350 students, the building has ample rehearsal space, professional grade dance studios, naturally lit art studios, music practice rooms, galleries, gathering areas and other facilities necessary to offer a learning environment designed specifically for the arts. The British International School of Houston Katy, TX
The new British International School of Houston develops students' critical thinking skills within a renowned International Baccalaureate program. British International School of Houston is Nord Anglia Education's largest PK-12 school to date. Within the larger campus, the design creates a variety of personalized learning spaces where students collaborate, learn from each other and solve real world problems. A central Agora, state-of-the-art auditorium, specialized classrooms, makerspaces and science labs support Nord Anglia's collaboration with organizations such as MIT and The Julliard School to deliver exceptional education. Designed as Fanning Howey + House Partners, a joint venture.

Columbia City Performance Art Center Columbia City, IN
In Indiana communities, the school is the center of public life, and Columbia City is no exception. The high school’s performing arts venue provides an exciting place for school and community events. The school’s performing arts wing is anchored by a 636-seat auditorium with state-of-the-art lighting and sound technology. Support spaces include an ADA-accessible orchestra pit, a scene shop, a props area, a costume shop and two dressing rooms. Community performing arts groups will rent and use the facilities. The design of the auditorium includes a sawtooth connector for the ceiling to provide a better acoustical experience. Other performing arts spaces include band and choir rooms, complete with practice rooms, as well as space for show choir.

St. Theodore Guerin - Fine Arts Noblesville, IN
The Fine Arts addition expanded opportunities for Guerin students to learn, perform and stay active, enhancing both their educational experience and overall well-being. Designed to strengthen Guerin's student life, the addition included a new Fine Arts Center with a 500-seat auditorium and a large group instruction room. Supporting spaces, such as a scene shop, dressing rooms, green room, ticket office, sound room and shared classroom, created a complete, modern performance environment that allowed students to develop and showcase their talents at a high level. This project built on a 20-year partnership between Fanning Howey and St. Theodore Guerin High School, continuing a legacy of thoughtful, future-focused design that equipped students and student-athletes with the resources they need to succeed.

Hillsdale Performing Arts Center Jeromesville, OH
The new Hillsdale PK-12 School has transformed the quality of education and civic life in this northeastern Ohio community. Basically used as a community center as well as a school, the Rover pipeline funded this new facility without the school district having to ask its taxpayers for help. An educational visioning and collaborative design process helped Hillsdale administrators and educators embrace a student-center approach to education. The community portion of the building includes its own event entry, with a beautiful commons area and concession stand. The 570-seat auditorium is located directly off of this space, and includes a full working stage with catwalk and rear projection room. Access to the music suite is from the stage. Another entry is near the back of the stage where scenery can be brought in and performing members can enter without having to go through the main event entry.

St. Marys Performing Arts Center St. Marys, OH
The new state-funded St. Marys Memorial High School/ Middle School includes an auditorium funded by the local St. Marys community. This new 6-12 school building houses 1,210 students and includes a 600-seat tiered auditorium that was funded by the St. Marys community. It includes a full working stage with a sunken orchestra pit and strip lighting on the front edge of the stage. It also includes a rear projection booth and accessible walkways on each side. There is a door to the center back of the stage leads to a scene shop and storage area with outside access. Access to the music suite is through passage towards the back and side of the stage. Directly outside the auditorium is the commons area with concession stand. Both the school and various community groups utilize this auditorium, as it is the only one in the local area.

Olentangy Berlin Performing Arts Center Delaware, OH
The 809-seat auditorium at Olentangy Berlin High School takes a functional and economical approach to supporting school and community events. Design of the auditorium provides the essential components of a modern performing arts curriculum. Highlights include a full working stage, full stage wings on each side, a full-fly loft, a scene shop, a storage area and a drama classroom that doubles as a greenroom. The economical design includes a sloped floor, instead of a stepped floor, to reduce costs. Cost savings are also realized by a one-step-down orchestra area, which keeps orchestra members out of the audience’s view during performances, but without the need for a full orchestra pit.

Princeton Performing Arts Center Cincinnati, OH
Princeton students and community members have a dramatic new place to enjoy the arts, thanks to the school’s new auditorium. The 1,000-seat auditorium is part of Viking Village, a community use venue that connects the new Princeton Middle School and the new Princeton High School. The auditorium is part of a performing arts suite that includes multi-purpose rooms, a band room, an orchestra room and vocal music spaces. Partner Firm: CR architecture + design
