Fanning Howey

Fanning Howey is an integrated architecture, interiors and engineering firm designing sports and recreation environments that shape potential.

From elite competitors to wellness enthusiasts, we start with the athletes these spaces serve and design environments that elevate what’s possible for them. Because when performance is elevated, it stays with the athlete everywhere they go – shaping confidence, culture and possibility well beyond the walls of the facility.

Our portfolio includes competitive venues, collegiate fitness centers, and community recreation facilities that have become catalysts for connection and pride. From ice arenas and fieldhouses to wellness centers and aquatics facilities, we deliver designs that spur both performance and long-term value across the entire community.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Potential builds when we focus on the fundamentals.

At Fanning Howey, we:

START WITH THE ATHLETE

Whether they’re competing at the highest level or showing up for their first workout, every athlete enters a space with different motivations, abilities, and needs. We design from a place of curiosity and empathy — understanding how people move, gather, recover, and belong.

ELEVATE THE MISSION

The best recreation facilities are places that athletes of all levels are drawn to and want to use again and again — spaces that feel active, welcoming, and worth showing up for. We design recreation environments that make participation feel intuitive and compelling. The result is a facility that doesn’t just support activity but becomes a desired, repeatable destination — strengthening institutional identity with every visit.

ENRICH THE COMMUNITY

Great recreation spaces help shape the kinds of communities people want to be part of. Beyond serving programs and users, these places influence which communities people choose to live, work, send their kids to school, and spend their time. Drawing from decades of experience in communitycentered design, we create environments that build pride and belonging, making communities stronger, more connected, and more desirable.

Fanning Howey has large portfolio of master planned sites for athletic and community use.

Master Planning

Fanning Howey has collaborated with dozens of communities to provide master planning that transforms large, complex sites into thoughtful visions for the future.

We evaluate each owner’s vision, resources, and growth potential to develop integrated long-term strategies with minimal disruption to existing operations. Our team excels at master planning large sites to incorporate athletic facilities as part of broader community and economic development plans.

Youth Sports

Fanning Howey designs youth sports facilities that support athlete development, safety, and community use. We create flexible gymnasiums, fieldhouses, and athletic complexes that accommodate multiple sports and year-round programming. Our approach emphasizes durability, adaptability, and cost-conscious planning, delivering high-performance environments that inspire participation, maximize resources, and serve students and the broader community.
