A Flexible Natatorium to Serve all Center Grove Students The new Center Grove High School natatorium is designed to be one of the most flexible pools in the state of Indiana, providing athletes and students with enhanced competitive, practice and physical education opportunities. The design of the natatorium includes the largest pool tank of any high school in the state. The 50+ meter Olympic-sized pool has two moveable bulkheads which reconfigure to support two 25-meter competition courses, two 25-yard courses or a 50-meter Olympic training course. This flexibility allows the school to run multiple races simultaneously, with up to 20 lanes. The pool also accommodates up to 200 swimmers for practices, giving athletes more time in the water and reducing practice times.

The new natatorium is part of a multi-phased plan developed by Fanning Howey. Fanning Howey won an invitation-only design competition for the district’s new Student Activity Center. As part of that original concept, the design team master planned Center Grove High School’s new natatorium and new student activity center at the same time. This allowed designers to maximize shared spaces and plan for future construction efficiencies, even though the additions were two years apart. As a result, Center Grove was able to complete all work without raising taxes. Fanning Howey designers used structural precast exterior insulted walls. This type of construction reduces the amount of labor and speeds up construction. The product also delivers the high-quality institutional look expected by the client.

Design of the pool tank optimizes athlete performance. The tank features a shallow floor area in the middle and deeper water at each end of the pool. This makes swimmers faster by providing deep water starts. It also allows Center Grove swimmers to use starting blocks at each end of the pool, rather than starting off bulkheads. The shallow floor area also creates a 25-yard warm up lane, located in between the moveable bulkheads, for use during meets. The natatorium design also enhances students’ and community members’ ability to develop their swimming abilities. The moveable bulkheads can be arranged to create separate areas for lap swimming, instruction and leisure, all at once. The central 25-yard cross lanes let lap swimming continue while physical education or senior swim programs are operating.

An Optimal Spectator Experience

Multiple design elements create an optimal experience for spectators. The natatorium has upper-level seating for 1,100, which is on the same grade as the central commons. The commons and supporting areas include public restrooms and concessions. Mid-level seating provides ADA access, while an upper balcony supports additional standing room-only viewing and built-in press seating. A 252-foot clerestory window runs the length of the north wall and brings in the ideal amount of natural light. During events, spectators can take advantage of a large central commons located between the natatorium and student activity center. The commons has restrooms and concessions, as well as large video monitors that let spectators view swimming events in real time.
