Unfolding is my life’s philosophy.

2

How should we react? When we unfold a piece of paper, we reveal something new. Do we ignore it or do we take action? Every day, we are encountered with new experiences. Every day, we are faced with the decisions of what we will do about them. We could let the events of the world pass us by. Or, we can decide to get up and do something. When my days unfold before me, I’m choosing to utilize design to do something. MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN PORTFOLIO

What do we do our country is run by entertainers? Entertainment is a business and our government is a democracy. But the way our society is structured, the two entities—business and democracy overlap. OBJECTIVE

Make a book out of an episode of This American Life. APPROACH

In episode 578, reporter Zoe Chace investigated the nation’s perception of Donald Trump. It seemed that everybody had an opinion. Inspired by his statement, “I drink my little wine and eat my little cracker,” I created this book as a satirical religious text about Donald Trump.

The Green Party US is a stagnant political party with a great mission. I developed a new visual system that was true to their original values and renamed the organization, Green, to allow it to expand their audience base and move into areas of government, business, and education.

The film, Roger & Me, was the first and most authentic documentary of politically controversial director, Michael Moore. A poor working class man tries to expose the biggest perpetrators that keeps people down in our society—capitalism and government. I chose to build the visual system off of the concept of fightting the system. The extemporaneous visuals are inspired by materials and aesthetics found on the streets of a political protest.

While it looks as though the Pride Lands is thriving in a circle of life, the King, Mufasa, has effectively discriminated against the hyenas. The movie portrayed them as bitter and vengeful, cast aside as the enemy, resorting to Scar as a means to overthrow a regime. This title sequence highlights the them of oppression of society and class.

A thesis project is a proof of mastery of a given subject field. It requires a rigourous study and exploration within the field. In graphic design, we prove our mastery through an extensive process, which involves understanding a problem, distilling the learnings, divising strategies to solve the problem, designing the solutions, and communicating them to various audiences. The following is an introduction to my MFA thesis project.

In 2015, The National Park Services had 307 million visitors. But, less than 20% of them were people of color. Many cited a lack of transportation, lack of experience or knowledge, and costs.

APPROACH

I decided to focus my target audience on low income individuals who live or grew up in urban areas that are interested in outdoor activities. After identifying some barriers to the outdoors—a lack of experience, transportation, and knowledge—I created a system of digital and physical resources that serve to provide an outdoor learning experience within the city, access to transportation, and easy-to-understand knowledge of getting into the outdoors.
