Transportation Safety Services
Fuss & O’Neill
Transportation Safety Services We have developed a reputation as transportation and traffic experts in New England through our decades of experience providing a wide range of transportation, land development, and planning expertise. Through our work on numerous projects for MassDOT, our transportation engineers are well versed in the roadway geometry, drainage, traffic signal design, traffic calming, and context-sensitive design techniques from the preliminary engineering design stages through the construction support phase. Our highway designers have handled assignments from large interstate highway improvements to local road and intersection geometry. Our engineers have design and field inspection experience with the construction of municipal infrastructure projects and with state-funded projects. This diversified background allows us to quickly adapt to the specific project needs of a city or town. We are proud of our reputation as transportation and traffic experts in New England. Our ability to consistently deliver high quality projects is evident through the number of repeat clients and trusting relationships that have been built We have prepared numerous transportation-related projects for a variety of clients, from private retail developments to public sector clients. We are well-versed in preparing intersection and roadway design projects in accordance with MassDOT design guidelines. Our strong working relationship with MassDOT has led to a reduction in design iterations and accelerated implementation schedules. From concept planning to final bid documents, we have assisted municipalities through the state TIP funding process, leading to major arterial projects in Springfield, Southbridge, Holyoke, Great Barrington, and Pittsfield.
Herein we present you with some of our recent projects, and we can provide more examples for any of the services and markets listed above.
Six Corners Neighborhood Round Springfield, MA
dabout
As part of the City’s efforts to rebuild the Six Corners neighborhood after a tornado, Fuss & O’Neill partnered with the City of Springfield to develop intersection improvements in Six Corners, which is located in the heart of Springfield, Massachusetts.
Award Winner 2022
The six-legged intersection was plagued with long delays, high accident rates, and unsafe pedestrian accommodations. Fuss & O’Neill worked with the City to develop a series of potential roundabout design options for the intersection. The design balanced complex geometry challenges to meet the City’s integrated goal of improved traffic circulation, improved safety, and creation of a public space connecting the neighborhood.
Fuss & O’Neill assisted with securing MassWorks funding and delivered the design through a flexible, accelerated, and client-focused approach.
Roosevelt Avenue/Island Pond R Springfield, MA
Hired under our On-Call Engineering contract with the City of Springfield, this MassDOT project entailed a full roadway realignment and park restoration adjacent to Watershops Pond. This complex intersection and traffic signalization project involved extensive coordination with MassDOT and the local neighborhood council to provide a solution to the heavily traveled Roosevelt Avenue Corridor.
Road
Improvements within the study area included the realignment of Island Pond Road at Roosevelt Avenue, 5-foot bicycle lanes, and the addition of a new traffic signal and turn lanes at the intersection of Island Pond Road at Roosevelt Avenue. The intersection of Roosevelt Avenue at Alden Street was re-striped and the signal was reconstructed to accommodate future traffic volumes. Wheelchair ramps were reconstructed to meet current ADA/AAB standards.
University Drive Corridor Improvements Amherst, MA
Fuss & O’Neill provided professional engineering services for the design of intersection and corridor improvements on University Drive and the expansion of Parking Lot #33 to the west of University Drive. The key highlights of the design are the installation of a single-lane roundabout at the Amity Street/University Drive intersection and the installation of a single-lane compact roundabout at the Fearing Street/University Drive intersection.
Separated bicycle lanes, pavement rehabilitation, and granite curb were installed along the corridor. The existing bituminous multi-use path north of Fearing Street was replaced by a cement concrete path. The limits of the project improvements for University Drive begin 150 feet south of the intersection with Amity Street/Rocky Hill Road and end 4,050 feet northward at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and the expansion of Parking Lot #33.
King Street Improvements Northampton, MA
Fuss & O’Neill provided design services for intersection realignment and signal coordination at three separate locations along King, Summer, and North Streets in Northampton. The design provides an extension of the downtown district, includes complete streets techniques, and implements a road diet, which allows room for a separated bike lane that connects to the Northampton Bikeway.
Coordination with stakeholders and community outreach were vital components of establishing project support for this MassDOT corridor improvement project. Low-impact development stormwater techniques (e.g., on-street rain gardens and tree filters) were included in the design. Our team provided construction administration services, allowing us to take this project from preliminary design through final construction.

The intersections of Sumner Avenue, Dickinson Street, and Belmont Avenue form the “X” intersection in Springfield, MA. This intersection was prone to accidents, had outdated traffic control equipment, and could not keep up with increased traffic demand. The City of Springfield contracted Fuss & O’Neill to implement the concept of the intersection redesign and to help advance it through the MassDOT project development procedure. Our team has provided project development engineering, environmental documentation and permitting, as well as the completion of a Functional Design Report, a Design Exception Report, a road safety audit, 25% design submission, preliminary right-of-way plans, and participation in public hearings.

North Street Streetscape Improvements Pittsfield, MA
Considered the final portion of the $18 million investment in Pittsfield’s Downtown, Phases 3 and 4 involved bringing North Street back to life through innovative landscape and streetscape design, made possible by MassWorks Infrastructure grants. Both projects combined to form approximately 2/3 mile of downtown urban streetscape and pedestrian improvements.
Fuss & O’Neill provided the full breadth of engineering services required to bring the project from planning and design to bidding and full-time resident engineering construction inspection. Improvements consisted of widening and/or roadway diets to better accommodate bicycles, traffic signal improvements and mid-block crosswalk enhancements, street-side bioretention facilities and rain gardens for roadway stormwater treatment, on-street parking, tiered pedestrian sitting walls, updated ADA compliant wheelchair ramps, trees and planters, and many other decorative sidewalk elements.
