Painters in their Gardens, North America’s Wilderness Retreats, and Summer Dresses, three of our highlights for the start of this year, set the tone for this new catalogue with a deliberate cheerful, springtime note. So, too, does Supermodels: The Next Generation, featuring the upcoming faces of high fashion. Dogs and Their Famous Owners adds a glamourous feel to the picture, while Fashion in 50 images is the first instalment in a series aimed at helping young readers visualise and understand subjects such as fashion, design, and contemporary architecture. We are also delighted to offer an in-depth study on Brutalist Architecture in the USA, from the early 1960s to today, at a time when this style is enjoying an enduring revival of interest.

The privileged relationship between painters and their gardens has inspired many striking canvases. These artworks are not merely sneak peeks into artists’ private realm, but more importantly an intimate yet vibrant celebration of nature in their immediate surroundings. Gardens of some artists, such as Joaquín Sorolla’s on Long Island and Mary Cassatt’s at Marly-le-Roi, have become unique backgrounds for portraiture. Other painters, like Max Liebermann in Wannsee, Berlin, and Pierre Bonnard in Vernonnet, tirelessly studied colours and perspectives in their gardens as a tribute to nature’s beauty. Painters’ passion for their gardens is reflected in Claude Monet’s Giverny, which was transformed into the centre of the master’s artistic universe, and Frida Kahlo’s garden at La Casa Azul in Coyoacán, which was a great source of motivation for her creative spirit. The fascinating artworks gathered in this book mesmerizingly illustrate the bond between artists and nature.

More than anywhere else, Brutalist architecture found its perfect home in the United States, where the gigantism, characteristic of this architectural style, and the aspirations ofbold modernity resonated particularly well. Masterpieces of Brutalist architecture, such as the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, by Louis Kahn, the AT&T Long Lines Building, a rare example of a windowless skyscraper in the heart of New York City, by John Carl Warnecke, and Dallas City Hall, in Dallas, Texas, by I.M. Pei, bear witness to the aesthetic genius of the architects who were able to combine the starkness of concrete composition and exposed structural elements with formal elegance. This book takes you on a fantastic tour of Brutalist architecture in the US, from its beginnings in the early 1960s to its heyday in the 1970s and its current revival.

When illustrious men select a watch, the choice they make can be surprising. Revolutionary leader Ernesto Che Guevarra was very fond of his Rolex GMT Master 1675, presented to him by his friend Fidel Castro. Pablo Picasso had a Michael Z. Berger 17-jewel manual wind watch with the twelve letters of his name forming the hour markers. Neil Armstrong wore an Omega Speedmaster when landing on the Moon, while Yuri Gagarin had a Soviet-designed Sturmanskie watch on his wrist for the first space flight by a human being. Albert Einstein had a gold Longines wristwatch, while Humphrey Bogart favoured a Longines Evidenza with a leather wristband.

From female shamans and healers in early civilisations to medieval witches, over the centuries certain women were thought to possess supernatural powers that allowed them to cure, or, on the contrary, harm their fellow humans. Both admired and feared, witches were often persecuted, especially in the Western world, and subjected to absurd prejudices, because they symbolised women emancipated from male power. As well, some of them were the bearers of ancestral knowledge about medicinal herbs, poisons, and counter-poisons. While the Age of Enlightenment saw the end of cruel trials against alleged witches, including being burned at the stake, the myth of the evil witch has nonetheless survived, fuelled by the romantic, and then symbolist imagination. The image of Circe, the seductive femme fatale, replaced the cliché of the ugly old woman with a demonic smile, and evolved into a figure of feminine wisdom far superior to masculine intellect, an example of which can be found in mid-20th century television series such as Bewitched, thus transforming the witch into a feminist icon. The omnipresence of the witch in children’s literature and popular culture in recent decades shows just how fascinating and compelling the figure remains.

• The witch in art, mythology, and popular culture, with rarely seen pictures

• How the witch, a once feared and outlawed person, became a key figure in today’s pop culture and a feminist icon

The dynamism, elegance, and expressiveness of dance have made it a fascinating and inexhaustible subject for artists. The dancers’ natural grace, the ritual of choreography, and the body’s postures have inspired many a masterpiece by painters and sculptors. This book explores the millennia-old history of dance in art, from early depictions in Egyptian and Indian art to the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Impressionism, and beyond. It sheds light on the pervasiveness of dance in social and cultural life, from folk traditions to court balls, Dance Macabre (Dance of Death), and Salome’s Dance of the Seven Veils, a favourite theme of Symbolists.

For nearly three centuries, painters have shaped our image of America. They have painted magnificent landscapes of immense plains, powerful rivers, and wild mountains as well as scenes of everyday life in villages and cities. They have documented the rise of big cities and a modern way of life, but also the joys and sorrows of Americans. The 101 paintings gathered in this book offer a unique panorama of America’s history, vibrant nature, and culture, and they bear witness to the artistic genius of the greatest American painters. They present a true and vivid portrait of a country with a thousand facets, whose contrasting images emerge from the works collected in this book.

In the first half of the 19th century, painters were finally able to take canvases out of their studios and depict life outdoors with accuracy. The possibility of painting en plein air was a ground-breaking moment in the history of art. In search of the best light, many of them set off to the seaside, where they could paint scenic vistas and happy moments on the beaches. Full of colours and light, summer flair, and seaside happiness, this compilation of famous paintings is meant to show how inspiring and essential the vision of seaside has been to painters from the early Impressionists to the modern day.

• How famous painters celebrate the light, life, and colours captured at the seaside

• A collection of joyful scenes on beaches and promenades

If you still believe that the Earth is green and blue, this book will open your eyes: our planet is of all possible colours, with infinite natural shades of yellow, red, white, purple, grey, and black. Throughout the colour spectrum, this book takes you to the far corners of the globe to discover landscapes that are as extraordinary as they are magnificent, each marked by a specific colour. From white salt deserts to naturally pink lakes, and from the turquoise blue of the seas to the bright orange hues of Monument Valley, a magical yet natural palette unfolds before your eyes.

With their imposing proportions and snowcapped peaks inaccessible to humans, halfway between earth and heaven, mountains have been perceived as places where people could commune with the sacred from the earliest ages of civilisation. Whether they are standing alone, such as Mount Fuji or Mount Ararat, or part of a mountain range, such as Mount Sinai or Mount Olympus, certain mountains have played a central role in the beliefs of different peoples and have continued to attract pilgrims in search of transcendence along with modern-day hikers. This fully illustrated book offers a unique panorama of sacred mountains around the globe, with their history and importance to local communities, and information about how to discover them.

The dense, impenetrable forests that have long covered vast areas of our planet have inspired marvellous mythological figures such as elves and goblins and an amazing fantasy bestiary. The magical and sacred nature of the forest is still echoed in children’s fairy tales that have delighted generations of young readers. Whether they host holy trees or are considered sacred spaces in their own right, forests are wondrous places to explore and feel simply enchanted. This unique atlas of sacred forests around the globe will guide you to some magnificent, and truly blessed woods.

Just like mountains, caves, and forests, rivers and lakes have inspired mystical feelings for humans: water is often seen as a regenerative, purifying element, and, as such, rivers and lakes have become ideal places for individual prayers, rituals, or pilgrimages – this is true of the Ganges in India, the Jordan River in the Middle East, the Osun River in Nigeria, Lake Guatavita in Colombia, and the Whanganui River in New Zealand, to name but a few. This volume takes you on a world tour of sacred rivers and lakes, across cultures and continents, and tells the amazing stories of the beliefs, rituals, and local customs associated with them.

• An illustrated panorama of sacred mountains, forests, rivers and lakes around the globe

• The history and beliefs associated with these sacred places
