Fan Zhang Fan Zhang (she/her) is an artist, designer and researcher who was born in China in 2000 and is currently based in London. Her academic odyssey commenced in 2016 at RMIT, Australia, where she completed her foundation studies and the first year of her bachelor’s program by 2018. She then transitioned to London, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Graphic and Media Design from the London College of Communication, UAL, in 2022. Fan pursued further studies, completing her MRes in Communication Design at the Royal College of Art in 2023.

Fan’s interests evolved to embrace speculative design, sound, and generative arts, transition design and anthropocene which continually sparked her curiosity. Her diverse cultural experiences and life in various countries have fueled her passion for exploring ‘communication’ through an interdisciplinary lens, enriching her artistic and research endeavors.

Project Brief <WHAT BEHIND VIEWS> is a reimagined iteration of <Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance> penned by Robert M. Pirsig in 1974. The original narrative follows a cross-continental motorcycle journey across America, entwined with philosophical musings on the quest for life's intrinsic values.In today's age, we possess the ability to virtually traverse every corner of the globe without physically venturing there ourselves. The conveniences of our fast-paced lives may inadvertently obscure the profound messages concealed within these views. This is precisely why I have chosen to undertake the redesign of this book.

The revamped book unfolds in two distinct parts. The initial segment chronicles a physical odyssey from the eastern to the western expanse of America. By juxtaposing on-location images sourced from Google Earth with the author's vivid written descriptions of these landscapes, we breathe life and visual clarity into the narrative. The second part embarks on a metaphysical journey, chronicling the relentless pursuit of truth, previously referred to as 'QUALITY' within the original work. Thought-provoking passages pertaining to these mental transformations are seamlessly woven into each stop along the journey, serving as guiding lights to aid readers in grasping these profound philosophical concepts more profoundly.

Original Book Introduction:

The search of Phaedrus to comprehend something he refers to as "Quality" lies at the center of this work. He discovered that the logical separation of the universe into "subjective" and "objective" domains did not adequately account for human experience. Later, Phaedrus finds that his Quality is identical to Lao Tzu's "Tao." - 道

Research/ Theories

Case Study Format Since it’s a photography book, it’s designed in a landscape format, with every page filled with captivating images.

Inspiration This photography book, set in Hong Kong, draws its inspiration from the amalgamation of captivating images and compelling narratives.

I have found inspiration for book layout (Ambrose and Harris, 2005), and also videos for creative book design (Paperspecs, 2021).

At the Camp Buell State Historic Site, it's time to take a break.These photos were captured using Robert Pirsig’s (1968) personal camera during the epic journey with Chris, Sylvia, and John, the voyage upon which his book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” (ZMM) is centered.

Additional interviews and discussions (Good and Basic,2020) regarding "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" have deepened my understanding of the subject matter.

Interview From this designer’s interview (Ng, 2021), I acquired the skill of conveying the emotion of an image through the use of colour and text.

Robert M. Pirsig originally released Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Investigation into Values in 1974. It is the first of Pirsig's publications in which he explores his "Metaphysics of Quality."

The theme of this book revolves around the concept of a ‘journey,’ which is delineated into two distinct sections: the physical voyage and the mental odyssey.

This book is organized into seven parts, meant to be read in the original travel order, from east to west, following the journey’s progression.

Distinct types of paper are employed to evoke the emotions and language of each section within the book. The map material and journey videos are rendered on delicate, easily fordable paper, while the quality and zen components are crafted with transparent sheets, symbolizing a positive mental state.

Given the book's utilization of five distinct types of paper to convey shifts in mood and changes, I undertook an extensive exploration, experimenting with various paper varieties to capture the evolving atmospheres and emotional nuances within the narrative.

I chose transparency paper to symbolize the concept of ‘quality.’ Descriptions of quality in both English and Chinese are intentionally reversed, inviting readers to look through the text and contemplate the dual nature of this profound concept.

In line with the book’s travel theme, I made a deliberate choice to use natural-colored paper for the main content section. This decision is intended to immerse the reader in the outdoor environment and evoke the organic essence of the journey.

To accommodate the need for folding the content and photo pages, I selected delicate, thin paper, even though it posed the challenge of being more intricate to print on.

Project Brief “No Man Is An Island” is a dynamic installation that draws inspiration from John Donne’s timeless 1624 poem. In my interpretation, Donne’s poetic masterpiece delves into the profound themes of communication and society. With this innovative project, my objective is to push the boundaries that separate the digital and physical realms, as well as the logical and perceptual aspects of art.

To breathe fresh life into Donne’s verses, I immersed them in four distinct languages: Chinese, English, Portuguese, and Japanese, infusing each with a unique visual aesthetic. The backdrop of this captivating video installation features a fabric adorned with the screen printed poem, seamlessly blending text and imagery to create an entirely new and evocative poetic experience.

The project involved both a video presentation and a printed book, with the content of the book composed of images derived from the dynamic transformations captured in the video.

Why This Poem Concrete poetry possesses a venerable historical heritage and continues to resonate in today's cultural landscape. From my perspective, this specific poem emphasizes the vital role of information and communication in an individual's life, highlighting our innate dependence on one another and the mutual support that is intrinsic to our human existence.

Sound Develop Collection of background sounds To start, I collected a range of ambient sounds for the film, including those from the street, St. Paul's Church, as well as the subway, buses, and more.

Subsequently, I explored the diverse interpretations of six different individuals reading the poetry, acknowledging the unique perspective each person brought to the recitation.

I conducted an experiment involving a projector and video to determine the ideal fabric size. Through this experiment, I observed that the visibility of the projector's light was significantly reduced when it passed through glass or plastic surfaces.

Visual Experiment Based on the sound of the poem and the video of the island, I made a few generative films. The reactions of the visuals to the music, as well as features such as high, medium, and low, as well as rhythm, will all have a varied impact on the alterations.

Within “The Park,” users will encounter a dynamic and personalized experience. Through a seamless integration of AI technology, each individual’s interaction with the virtual environment will be shaped by their subconscious, intellect, and emotions. This tailored approach aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of one’s surroundings and the challenges they face.

Ultimately, I decided to apply generative arts as a tool and use a hybrid of a tree and a human spine. Tree means rhizomes, and the spine means human. It moves, dance, and transform vigorously or gently, affected by the voice of this world. This object-it seems they convert freely and uncontrolled, but it is controlled by the system, which is the code I put in. It moves based on the rhythm, pitch or low of the voice.

In this project, my role involves crafting both the comprehensive style guide for the entire book and designing its cover.Book design parallels architectural space creation, emphasizing the reading sequence’s role in understanding. Structuring eight projects posed a challenge, inspired by John Cage’s indeterminacy and titled [A]MAZE. Readers engage in an interactive maze game on the cover before reading, featuring debossed three-dimensional imagery. Touching and feeling the cover enhances the tactile experience, extending beyond flipping pages.

The MRes Group will be holding an event of our actual projects shortly after publication in February 2023 as an extension of the book.

This event documents and showcases our research processes and allows audiences to interact and communicate with our works. We take this opportunity to propose questions and hope to get some feedback.

The Future Body

In some ways, we are as unpredictable and fluid as the body without organs. We as humans are endeavouring to figure out the position in nature, the relationship with technique, and the images of the other. However, in the physical world, we are restrained by the authority, power system and ‘the truth’, which means we are fettered. Likewise, capitalism and colonialism are closely correlated to the Anthropocene's consequences.

To break the centralisation system, we need to build a new ideology. Referring to the concept of ‘rhizomes’, raised

by Deleuze, which means we need to create a diversified, mutability, irregularity, and fluid. When we believe we have touched freedom and unfettered metamorphosis, how can external voices affect us, whether we notice or not? Can we calmly confronted when the Anthropocene comes and be a

body without organs in a world supervised by systems and authority?

Ultimately, the artwork is an applied interview with the future body applied generative arts as a tool to explore the relationship between anthropocene, sounds and body (see below). A hybrid of a tree and a human backbone. The tree represents rhizomes – the metaphor and symbolism of the body without organs. The spine means human, both physically and spiritually. It moves, dances, and transforms vigorously or gently, affected by the random sounds of this world. This object seems to convert freely and uncontrollably, but it is controlled by the system, which is the code I put in. It moves based on the rhythm, pitch of the voice.

In the current epoch known as the Anthropocene, the issue of soil health presents itself as a multifaceted challenge. It’s influenced by a myriad of elements including human activities, governmental policies, economic factors, worldwide dynamics, and social sciences. This forms a ‘wicked problem’ (Erlhoff , et al. 2008) that requires an extensive understanding and significant transformational shifts. The most effective strategy to tackle this research is through Transition Design, a method that adopts a holistic and systemic perspective. This approach is dedicated to devising sustainable solutions for complex issues that span societal and environmental dimensions.

Project Brief In the Anthropocene era, soil health is crucial for the well-being of all living beings, particularly in the context of agriculture. A UN report warns of potential disruptions to food supplies, population displacement, and biodiversity loss, emphasizing the urgent need to proactively protect and sustainably use land. The “Global Land Outlook” report identifies the global food system as the main cause of land degradation, with deforestation being a significant factor in the loss of terrestrial biodiversity.

OurLand, an inclusive platform, connects farmers, researchers, and scientists worldwide for knowledge exchange and collaborative efforts to address soil health challenges. The platform fosters innovation by facilitating the sharing of insights and expertise across diverse fields. OurLand provides farmers with information on practices, technologies, and products to improve soil quality, while researchers gain access to real-world data for developing effective solutions.

Through open communication and collaboration, OurLand aims to advance sustainable agriculture and bridge the gap between scientific theory and practical farming. The platform strives to contribute significantly to global agricultural research and development by facilitating the exchange of information and ideas.

Transition Design, as outlined by Irwin (2015), is a methodology that views our current times as a phase of change and stresses the necessity for societal evolution towards sustainable futures. It underscores the pivotal role of design in guiding these shifts, recognizing the interplay between social, economic, political, and natural systems. By addressing issues across different spatial and temporal scales, the goal of Transition Design is to improve overall quality of life, acknowledging the intricacies of our interconnected world.

I opt to employ the Transition Design Analysis method as provided by the Carnegie Mellon University course. This approach is designed to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of fostering the progression of transition design, with the ultimate goal of addressing intricate and formidable challenges through the initiation of systemic change (Carnegie Mellon School of Design, 2015).

Project 6: Our Land Analysis

Participatory Action Research

This analysis delves into the complex issue of soil health during the Anthropocene era, exploring its intricate connections with other challenges and dependencies. While the advent of digitalization and electronic devices has enhanced quality of life and efficiency, it has concurrently posed threats to soil health due to the presence of rare earth elements and metals in electronic components. Soil degradation is further exacerbated by mining activities associated with electronics production, energy provision, and agriculture.

In addressing wicked problems like soil health, stakeholder relations play a pivotal role, although they often impede transitions to more sustainable futures due to the pragmatic problem-profit dynamic. Within the realm of soil health and biodiversity, four key stakeholders emerge: farmers and ranchers, environmentalists, government, and the public. These stakeholders harbor interconnected concerns and aspirations, with some sharing hopes or fears, while others possess conflicting needs or opinions.

Farmers, reliant on healthy soil for their livelihoods, sometimes engage in practices detrimental to soil health and biodiversity. Resistance to change may stem from perceived threats to farmers’ livelihoods, potentially leading to unjust blame and conflicts with the public. Government entities may fear that addressing soil health and biodiversity issues could impact development plans and incur higher costs.

Participatory description: Participants in this interview, including individual farmers, factory workers, and the factory manager, reside and work in Xincai County. Conducted on June 3, 2023, post-wheat harvest, the interviews took place in both farmland and office settings. The objective was to understand challenges faced by farmers and factories, as well as soil conditions in the area. Limited samples may result in variations across regions.

Recognizing these interconnected interests is vital for resolving conflicts and prioritizing common goals. By comprehending the complexity of stakeholder relations and the interdependencies inherent in the wicked problem, effective solutions can be formulated to improve soil health and biodiversity sustainably.

The intensification of agricultural practices to meet the demands of a growing human population has led to habitat modifications and adverse effects on soil biodiversity. Land-use changes, irrigation, heavy machinery, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides disrupt soil structure and physiochemical properties.

Factors such as land-use intensification, pesticide usage, and herbicides impact soil biodiversity. Additionally, urbanization driven by high food demands contributes to global threats to soil biodiversity through mining activities and associated issues.

While collaboration across diverse fields is essential to address the problem, it became evident that agricultural soil is predominantly affected. After employing transition design as the initial phase of a comprehensive analysis, I opted for participatory action research. This approach involves conducting fieldwork on soil with the active involvement of relevant stakeholders, such as farmers who directly influence the soil and the fields they cultivate. I chose direct observation and interviews as methodologies, aiming to identify precise factors and effective solutions for soil health.

Evaluate I adopted the participatory action research method as outlined in McNiff and Whitehead’s “Action-Reflection Cycles” (2006, p. 9, Fig. 1.1). This approach emphasizes a cyclical process of active involvement and reflective practice.

Scientific planting is one approach to safeguard agricultural land. Unfortunately, the requirements for scientific planting cannot be met by most Chinese regions presently. Consequently, soil resources continue to deteriorate, perpetuating a vicious cycle.

Agricultural experts' theories may not be applicable to all regions and circumstances, necessitating an analysis of better solutions based on the specific situation. However, most farmers lack access to expert insights in related fields.

Ineffective communication hampers knowledge exchange, hindering soil studies. Overcoming ingrained behaviors demands time. Transition Design, focusing on sustainable change, avoids quick fixes. As a communication designer, I developed an app prototype to fostering information exchange among farmers, experts, and diverse fields. Aligning with Transition Design principles, the app promotes collaboration for systemic change. It emphasizes the importance of increased attention, effective communication, and gradual establishment of a long-term intervention system.
