Martial Arts will get you KICKIN’! When

the average person thinks of martial arts, visions of Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan flying through the air, taking out the bad guys comes to mind. Maybe they see the video games with the bloody graphics. But, to someone in the know, violence is not a part of martial arts. Martial arts is more about discipline of the mind and body and a way to avoid conflicts.

instructor once said, “The truth will be different for each person. Research your own truth. Absorb what is useful. Discard what is useless.” That being said, there is a fairly strong consensus among many students and instructors that one should pursue a given style until a black belt before one is mature enough in martial arts to blend in another style. Having a yellow belt in six different styles will not increase

Back in the day, Governor Jeb Bush joined with the National Association of Professional Martial Artists in issuing an official proclamation declaring October as “National Martial Arts Month.”

Things that make a lot of sense for one individual may not make as much sense for a different person with a different body type. A fairly famous martial arts

is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba (often referred to by his title ‘O ‘Sensei or Great Teacher’). On a purely physical level, it is an art involving some throws and joint locks that are derived from jiu-jitsu and some throws and other techniques derived from ken-jutsu. Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather upon using their own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. Upon closer examination, practitioners will find from Aikido what they are looking for whether it is applicable self-defense technique, spiritual enlightenment, physical health or peace of mind. Different styles emphasize the more spiritual aspects to greater or lesser degrees. Although the idea of a martial discipline striving for peace and harmony may seem paradoxical, it is the most basic tenet of the art.

There are dozens of martial arts schools in Tampa Bay, teaching a variety of disciplines and styles. They compete in tournaments and are judged, in many cases, on form, much like a gymnast or diver. Not sure which school is best for you? Read on... There is no perfect style. Every major style involves certain principals that have allowed the various practitioners to escape from conflict. Every style makes certain assumptions about what set of techniques will be used to defend against a given set of attacks. Without these assumptions, very few of us would know where to start. However, it is also true that each of us is different in size, strength and temperament.

Aikido

Dominic Puntoriero, 31, from Clearwater’s Top Martial Arts and Family Fitness.

your understanding of the martial arts. More important than a given style is how a particular instructor teaches it. Go to the demonstrations. See what they teach. See if you can learn from the instructors and upper belt students. If that is the case, you will probably get a lot out of the class. However, like regular classes, what you get out of it is roughly proportional to what you put into it.

The sport of Judo traces back to the brutal hand-to-hand combat of the ancient Japanese samurai warriors. Literally meaning “soft way,” judo was developed by Dr. Jigiro Kano in the early 1880’s as a gentler alternative to the more dangerous martial arts. The sport preached strict training to produce a mind and body in a state of harmony and balance. In judo, the competitors or “judokas,” employ specialized principals of movement, balance and leverage to: 1) Throw the opponent to the mat on his/her back. 2) Immobilize or control an opponent on any part of his/her back. 3) Apply arm bars, keeping in mind that joint locks other than the elbow constitute a serious

Page 6 rule violation. 4) Choke the opponent while avoiding any action which might injure the neck or the spine of the opponent. Incoming force is often used by the defender to defeat an opponent. A perfect, full-point throw, results in the end of the match. This perfect move is scored as an “ippon.”

Taekwondo

is a modern martial art, characterized by its fast, high and spinning kicks. The name taekwondo means: tae = “to strike, or block with the foot” or “to kick” and it also means “jump;” k’won = “fist” or “to strike or block with hand.” Take this together and taekwondo means: “The art of kicking and punching” or “the art of unarmed combat.” The sport was founded in Korea and is one of the more popular modern martial arts. There is no use of weapons in taekwondo. The opponent is attacked with bare hands and feet. Taekwondo has become popular because it’s a very powerful sport and spectacular to see. Taekwondo has no age limits and is a very good sport for children. They learn fast reactions through games, learn to respect others, learn to know their abilities and disabilities. Competition rules are a bit different for children than for adults. Although children wear full body protection (preferably thicker protection than for adults) only kicks and punches to the body are allowed, no kicks to the head.

Karate

is a hard style distilled in Okinawa from Chinese fighting styles. Originally called “te” for hand, it was later called kara-te for “Chinese hand.” In later years, the Japanese modified this definition to mean “empty hand.” As Okinawa was occupied by the Japanese at the time of Karate’s introduction to Okinawa, it was the primary self-defense style for the unarmed population. The Japanese, in general, sneered at the art, preferring judo. A challenge match between a young Japanese police officer

MilPro Publications and judo practitioner against the leading Okinawan karate teacher of the day, Chojum Miyagi (No, not the guy from the “Karate Kid!”) led to the Japanese accepting karate. The 75 year old Miyagi dropped his youthful opponent with one punch to the solar plexus. The man who brought karate to the Japanese mainland was Gichin Funakoshi. He founded a version called Shotokan which is widely practiced today.

named Yong Suhl Choi combined jujitsu techniques with the kicks and punches so prevalent in Korean martial arts to create Hapkido. Hapkido is the Korean pronunciation of kanji that in Japanese is pronounced aikido.

Tai Chi has been practiced in China

for centuries as a martial art, as exercise and as a means of improving the flow of internal energy within the body. Because of tai chi’s emphasis on correct form and feeling each movement, it is practiced very slowly and gently. Tai Chi promotes strength, stamina, and flexibility, while tempering the joints of practitioners.

Wing Chun is a style of Kung Fu that

Eight year old Madison Trentler, of Pro Karate Center in Palm Harbor.

Jujitsu (literally “the gentle fighting

art”) is an empty handed extension of the sword fighting art of the Japanese Samurai. The actual ancient art is called Aiki Jujitsu. This evolved joint locks, throws, strikes, blocks and chokes. Aiki jujitsu went through some changes in the late 1800s’ and early 1900’s. Jigoro Kano removed many of the dangerous techniques to create judo (the gentle way). This allowed students to practice full speed against resisting opponents, but with far fewer injuries that happened when jujitsu was practiced at full speed.

Hapkido

About the same time, Morehei Uyeshiba took a different set of techniques out to create aikido. (A “jitsu is a fighting style. A “do” is a way.) About the same time, a Korean

originates from China; the martial art was later refined in Hong Kong. Wing Chun’s specialty is in close contact combat, using quick punches and kicks with a tight defense, coordinated through agile stances and footwork for a quick advance. The effectiveness of Wing Chun is achieved by well coordinated attacks with simultaneous defence and vise versa. Due to its effectiveness this martial art makes for an effective form of self-defense.

Muay Thai

is a combat sport from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. It is referred to as the “Art of Eight Limbs” or the “Science of Eight Limbs” because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is

a full contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground, from a variety of other combat sports. The roots of modern mixed martial arts can be traced back to the ancient Olympics. Various contests took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. It was brought to the US by the Gracie family in 1993.

Owner: Hall of Fame Grandmaster Steve Lee Swift has been teaching Wing Chun for over 40 years. He learned from the late famous Grandmaster Ip Man’s 2 sons, Ip Chun and Ip Ching, as well as his top Senior Instructors, Wong Shun Leung and Simon Lau. Both Ip Man and Wong Shun Leung taught Bruce Lee. GM Swift was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Grandmasters at Universal Studios, held each year and featured in countless media reports. GM Swift was the first to bring Ip Man’s sons to the USA for the first time ever and has taught pro ballplayers from the NHL, NFL and WWE as well as amateur

Stars such as Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Sammo Hung, and Bruce Lee borrowed heavily from Wing Chun in their movies. KINGS OF THE PINS...

At Sunrise Lanes in St. Petersburg Babu Desu, Shawn Buske, Dave Nicholson and Nate Santiago, aka The Kingpins, are back to defend their Monday night summer league title. They opened the Fall season knocking off Sparefishing, six games to two but were taken down the next week by Gutterdome, two games to six. Minds in the Gutter have taken the early league lead, beating Lightning Strikes six games to two in week one and destroying The Wesley Crushers eight to zip. Scott Grages of Livin’ on a Spare takes the early men’s scoring lead, averaging a sizzling 227, 37 points higher than second place Larnel Sultan of Splits Happen. Sultan’s teammate Brandon Giles is third, averaging 187.

On the women’s side, Ashley Succow and Jessica Succow are one-two in scoring average with a 148 and 142 average respectively. Patricia Gordon of Livin’ on a Spare is third. It’s a long way to go until the November playoffs with the top 4 of the 12 teams playing for the title.

seven games and leading the team with 99 total points, a 14.1 per game average. Eric McCrae is the team’s outside threat, knocking down a bit over 11 points per game. The MONSTARS finished with a 5-2 record, good enough for second place and the other first round bye. The MONSTARS have the league’s most prolific offense, scoring a league high 526 points, and the only team to score triple digits when they scored 113 points in a win over Rogue Nation in week five. David Pisarcik leads the powerful offense attack, and the league in scoring, averaging 20 points per game. Luc Rivera has been deadly from three point land, leading the team with seven treys. Colby Perrone, Jordan Powers, Michael Portesy and Kevin Cockburn all had double digit scoring averages. The MONSTARS go into the playoffs on a bit of a down note. They are coming off a loss, as the Blue Devils edged them out 52-42 in the regular season finale. The Blue Devils closed out the regular season with back-to-back victories. They will match up with the Company Men in the quarterfinals. Both teams finished with identical 3-4 records in the regular season. The Devils are led by Jaron Fleming, who was sixth in the league with 15.7 PPG. Ray Boone averaged 13.6. Sam de Silva provided the offensive punch for the Company Men. His 17 points per game were good enough for third highest in the league. Greg Sack

provided support with 11.6 PPG for the Company. In the other quarter-final, the Delta Air Squad will take their 4-3 record out for a spin against the winless Rouge Nation. The Air Squad’s Michael McCarthy led the league in total points, pouring in 139 points, including a league leading nine from three point land. His 19.9 PPG were just one tenth of a point behind Pisarcik for second in the league. Eric Gile, Shane Tucker and Fitzroy Gallimore all averaged in double figures for the Air Squad. Jonathan Stansberry, 15.3 PPG and Brandon Chattman 13.7 PPG hope to turn things around for the Nation. Things will be heating up soon as the playoffs start October 12th.

BACK AT THE YARD...

Monday nights at the Eddie C Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater. The Monday night Co-Ed Softball season it getting close to playoff time and two teams, Stranger Danger and Gimme Some Glovin’, are neck and neck for the top seed in the intermediate division. The Academy: At Syllaba’s Black Belt Academy the mission is to educate students to allow them to be the best martial artists possible. All students are taught how to respect themselves and others while learning the value of hard work and working together as a team. The school instills discipline, leadership skills, and builds the self-confidence of every student.

MilPro Publications The academy teaches an early style of forms that adheres to the Official WTF and ITF syllabi. Forms are a systematic, and prearranged series of moves that serve as a base to learn proper technique. Proper technique allows a student to execute punches, kicks, and blocks with maximum effectiveness; hence, making an effective martial artist. The academy also teaches elements of Hapkido and Judo based grappling. These styles include hold downs, joint locks, and other techniques that will allow you to excel in a fight even if you are forced to the ground. The Black Belt: Hard work, perseverance, and practice will allow students to advance steadily in the quest to obtain a black belt. The black belt you earn here can be registered at the Kukkiwon in South Korea and is recognized internationally. The Goal: Syllaba’s Black Belt Academy strives to provide top notch martial arts training while keeping the overhead as low as possible in order to provide affordable classes for all students. The focus is on training and furthering martial arts education while using the principles of respect and discipline. The overall goal is success, in and outside of the dojang. Programs: The academy offers training for Tots, Kids, Teens and Adults and is open 6 days a week. Classes range from 45 minutes for tots and up to 2 hours for advanced belts. Kids can attend classes every day, if desired.

Page 27 Adults have options to attend morning and evening classes to accommodate schedules. The academy has both a Demo and Competition Team and attends multiple tournaments throughout the year. The academy hosts an annual tournament of its own, as well as annual picnics and participates in charity events as a school.
