Taekwondo

Ten year old martial artist Kaitlyn Pamplona who trains at Pro Karate Center in Palm Harbor is a five time 2014 Gold Medal winner.
Karate is a hard style distilled in Okinawa from Chinese fighting styles. Originally called “te” for hand, it was later called kara-te for “Chinese hand.” In later years, the Japanese modified this definition to mean “empty hand.” As Okinawa was occupied by the Japanese at the time of Karate’s introduction to Okinawa, it was the primary self-defense style for the unarmed population. The Japanese, in general, sneered at the art, preferring judo. A challenge match between a young Japanese police officer and judo practitioner against the leading Okinawan karate teacher of the day, Chojum Miyagi (No, not the guy from the “Karate Kid!”) led to the Japanese accepting karate. The 75 year old Miyagi dropped his youthful opponent with one punch to the solar plexus. The man who brought karate to the Japanese

Jujitsu (literally “the gentle fighting
art”) is an empty handed extension of the sword fighting art of the Japanese Samurai. The actual ancient art is called Aiki Jujitsu. This evolved joint locks, throws, strikes, blocks and chokes. Aiki jujitsu went through some changes in the late 1800s’ and early 1900’s. Jigoro Kano removed many of the dangerous techniques to create judo (the gentle way). This allowed students to practice full speed against resisting opponents, but with far fewer injuries that happened when jujitsu was practiced at full speed.

About the same time, Morehei Uyeshiba took a different set of techniques out to create aikido. (A “jitsu is a fighting style. A “do” is a way.) About the same time, a Korean named Yong Suhl Choi combined jujitsu techniques with the kicks and

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground, from a variety of other combat sports. The roots of modern mixed martial arts can be traced back to the ancient Olympics. Various contests took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. It was brought to the US by the Gracie family in 1993.
Wing Chun is a style of Kung Fu that
originates from China; the martial art was later refined in Hong Kong. Wing Chun’s specialty is in close contact combat, using quick punches and kicks with a tight defense, coordinated through agile stances and footwork for a quick advance. PRO KARATE CENTER’S LEADERSHIP TEAM Pro Karate Center’s leadership team reached out to the community by spearheading a clothes drive for the needy and raised money and baby supplies for the Kimberly Home. They organized a lunch and demo for the kids at Joshua House, a safe haven for children of all ages who were abandoned and abused. The leadership team is planning on helping out with the homeless later this year. They have several community activities planned through 2013. Each member of the leadership team is responsible for each project from start to completion. The team members are known as the STORM team, Students of Role Models.

As a kid, Tim first discovered his love for martial arts and began training under the instruction of Mr. Bill Hannah in Northfield Ohio. As a young man, Tim served in the Army and later joined the police department in Northfield Ohio. After many years of service, Tim retired from law enforcement and moved to Florida. Tim continued his martial education with Mr. Hannah, kept his skills sharp, training his father Jack Syllaba, a

After losing his father to cancer in 2008, Tim decided he wanted to share his 30 years of martial arts knowledge with others and opened Syllaba’s Black Belt Academy in honor of his father. Tim continues to train and actively competes in martial arts competitions. The Academy: At Syllaba’s Black Belt Academy the mission is to educate students to allow them to be the best martial artists possible. All students are taught how to respect themselves and others while learning the value of hard work and working together as a team. The school instills discipline, leadership skills, and builds the self-confidence of every student.

The Black Belt: Hard work, perseverance, and practice will allow students to advance steadily in the quest to obtain a black belt. The black belt you earn here can be registered at the Kukkiwon in South Korea and is recognized internationally. The Goal: Syllaba’s Black Belt Academy strives to provide top notch martial arts training while keeping the overhead as low as possible in order to provide affordable classes for all students. The focus is on training and furthering martial arts education while using the principles of respect and discipline. The overall goal is success, in and outside of the dojang.
