Ten year old martial artist Kaitlyn Pamplona who trains at Pro Karate Center in Palm Harbor is a five time 2014 Gold Medal winner.

Karate is a hard style distilled in Okinawa from Chinese fighting styles.

Originally called “te” for hand, it was later called kara-te for “Chinese hand.”

In later years, the Japanese modified this definition to mean “empty hand.” As Okinawa was occupied by the Japanese at the time of Karate’s introduction to Okinawa, it was the primary self-defense style for the unarmed population.

The Japanese, in general, sneered at the art, preferring judo. A challenge match between a young Japanese police officer and judo practitioner against the leading Okinawan karate teacher of the day, Chojum Miyagi (No, not the guy from the “Karate Kid!”) led to the Japanese accepting karate. Jujitsu (literally “the gentle fighting

art”) is an empty handed extension of the sword fighting art of the Japanese Samurai. The actual ancient art is called Aiki Jujitsu. This evolved joint locks, throws, strikes, blocks and chokes. Aiki jujitsu went through some changes in the late 1800s’ and early 1900’s. Jigoro Kano removed many of the dangerous techniques to create judo (the gentle way). This allowed students to practice full speed against resisting opponents, but with far fewer injuries that happened when jujitsu was practiced at full speed.

Over 1,000 children in Pinellas County do not have a volunteer Guardian ad Litem.

As a Guardian ad Litem, you advocate in court and in the child welfare system for abused, abandoned, or neglected children. The Guardian ad Litem visits the child every month, becomes familiar with the child’s case, and makes recommedations to the court to help ensure the child has a safe, caring, and stable home.

No prior experience is necessary; you will be well trained and supported by an experienced supervisory and legal staff. Once trained, volunteers spend an average of ten hours a month.

Nine year old martial artist David Wasson who trains at Seminole Martial Arts is a two time Character Award winner at school.

School: Grandmasters Wing Chun is the largest Wing Chun gym in North America, teaching the entire system. The over 5,500 sf facility features 24 ft. ceilings and 14 ft. tall mirrors, 80 ft. long. There is a lounge for guests downstairs and upstairs overlooking the entire facility.

PRO KARATE CENTER 2014 HIGHLIGHTS: • Pro Karate Center celebrated its 39th year in business.

PRO KARATE CENTER’S LEADERSHIP TEAM Pro Karate Center’s leadership team reached out to the community by spearheading a clothes drive for the needy and raised money and baby supplies for the Kimberly Home. They organized a lunch and demo for the kids at Joshua House, a safe haven for children of all ages who were abandoned and abused. The leadership team is planning on helping out with the homeless later this year.

They have several community activities planned through 2013.

Each member of the leadership team is responsible for each project from start to completion.

The team members are known as the STORM team, Students of Role Models.

The Black Belt: Hard work, perseverance, and practice will allow students to advance steadily in the quest to obtain a black belt.

The black belt you earn here can be registered at the Kukkiwon in South Korea and is recognized internationally.

The Goal: Syllaba’s Black Belt Academy strives to provide top notch martial arts training while keeping the overhead as low as possible in order to provide affordable classes for all students. The focus is on training and furthering martial arts education while using the principles of respect and discipline. The overall goal is success, in and outside of the dojang.

Programs: The academy offers training for Tots, Kids, Teens and Adults and is open 6 days a week.
