The Weekend Warrior on Firming Up the Body The summer is coming, For many of us that means figuring out what camps to send the kids to and how to schedule all of those activities.

But summer conjures up other images, like a sandy beach with deep blue water and a bright sun’s rays shimmering across the Gulf of Mexico. That pristine, serene image also includes me in a pair of board shorts without the benefit of a wet suit to hold in my stomach.

So, for many of us it’s time to tighten up those abs, drop a few of those ice cream and chocolate cake pounds the and get ready to bear it all, or rovide: at least most of it, on the beautiful beaches of Tampa Bay.

With all that said, maybe it’s really not too hot for me to wear a wet suit.

chargers take two presideNt cup titles It all starts sometime in early June, while Little League Baseball is gearing up for the Top Team and All-Star Tournaments, soccer kids are beginning their own quest.

Like waking from a long slumber, these kids stretch, leisurely dribble down the pitch and put shots on net. Goal Keepers watch errant shots sail beyond the goal mouth and swat away the balls that get close. Coaches peruse the endless stream of pony tailed prospects, occasionally conversing quietly with another coach or writing a brief note on a clipboard. They are looking for that special spark, the extra burst of speed or that sound of a heavy foot striking the ball. This is the beginning of the competitive soccer season, the first steps on a long road that will, hopefully, end in March with a President’s Cup Title.

In order to even play in the President’s Cup, a team must first win a Division One title at the Region Cup, no small task. The Chargers Soccer Club sent 26 teams to the Region C Cup and came away with three Division One titles and three berths in this year’s President’s Cup. The U12 Charger Girls were one of 17 teams in their age group playing for the Region C Cup. They opened the tournament by pounding the Florida Hawks 6-nil. Next up, the girls matched up with the West Florida Flames of Pinellas.

The Flames were extinguished by a 2-0 score. The Chargers’ next game was against another Flame team, this one from Brandon. The Brandon team would have no more success in keeping the fire lit, as their flames were smothered by a relentless Charger defense, 2-zip.

The Chargers improved to 4-0 with a 2-0 victory over the Cape Coral Cyclones.

With a sweep of their first four games under their belts, the Charger Girls squared off against the Tampa Thunder in the quarter-finals. The Thunder had finished second in bracket B, winning two and losing one. The Chargers came out fast, exploding for four unanswered goals and silencing the Thunder 4-0. In the semi finals, it would be a rematch with the Flames of Brandon and the result would be the same: Chargers 2, Flames 0.

To call the Charger defense stingy would be a major underestimate since they had not allowed a goal in six games. The streak would remain intact as they shut out the Cyclones again, 2-0 to win the Region C title and spot in the Presidents Cup. The Chargers’ first President Cup victim... er, opponent, was the Cooper City Optimist Cobras, representing Region A. The Cobras ended the Chargers’ streak of shutouts, but the winning streak remained intact with a hard fought 2-1 victory, setting up the championship showdown with the Orlando City Soccer Club of Region B. The Orlando team had marched through the competition at the Region A Cup, going undefeated in dominating fashion. They just squeaked by the Warner Soccer Club

Page 8 of Region A, 1-0 to earn their spot in the finals. The two teams dug in and battled hard, limiting shots on goal and making each other work for every inch of real estate.

Orlando would pierce the stout Charger defense for a goal, but the Chargers were able to get two balls past the Orlando net minder for a 2-1 victory and the President’s Cup title.

The Chargers U12 Boys opened the Region C Cup with a 3-1 victory over the Newcastle Futball Club. Next up, the Chargers edged out the West Florida Flames 1-nil.

First up would be the North Fort Myers Knights. The Chargers made it an early night for the Knights as they sent Ft. Myers packing with a 3-1 victory. In the semifinals, the Chargers would square off with the Winter Haven Kicks. The Kicks were also undefeated and breezed through pool play allowing just a lone goal. The semi final was a well played close game with the

lead changing hands before the Chargers jumped out for good en route to a 3-2 victory and a spot in the championship game.

The Chargers took on the Florida Fire Juniors in the title game. A solid defense and timely scoring poured water on the Fire’s heat as the Chargers won, going away with a 3-zip shutout and the Region C Title.

The Chargers took home the President’s Cup by pounding Orlando 3-0 and then edging out the Kendall Soccer Club 1-0 for the title.

ADHD, SPORTS AND SUMMER CAMP Alice Cooper wrote a song about it, “School’s Out for Summer!”

It’s a great time of the year for kids, the weather is warm, and it’s time to play. There may have been a week or so of summer camp, but the rest of the time is what man has always wanted, Freedom! The ability to do whatever you want, whenever you want, until you’ve done it for a while.

That’s the time you may hear your ADHD child speaking the most spine tingling phrase, I’m bored, there’s nothing to do.

If you’re the parent of an ADHD child, the summer could bring some special challenges.

The kid who is spinning around in the outfield and picking flowers in a T-Ball game can be locked in on the basketball court where the speed of the game doesn’t make it harder to focus, but in many cases, easier. The high speed of the action is processed fast and he is, as they say, in his

wheelhouse. The same way your child may be climbing the drapes while someone explains the history of this particular museum, may be totally focused on the computer screen of a computer class. So, it’s important to find those “wheelhouse” activities and avoid the “picking the daisies” projects.

It’s tempting to let kids stay up later in summer, and a bit of that is OK. But remember that even a little sleep deprivation can lead to irritability and meltdowns at any time of year.

One trip to the amusement park on a weekend is plenty, if you try and load up with the aquarium and zoo it may be too hectic and become overwhelming. Leave room for down time every day, when your child can do whatever he or she wants, even nothing at all. And

So try to maintain basic bedtime habits. Stick to scheduled chores, as well as other established routines.

For example, a whole day in front of the TV should be off limits even during summer months.

Take advantage of the summer recreational and educational opportunities that are abundant in the Tampa Bay area. Sports is a great way for your child to burn off some energy and the structure and interaction of a sports camp can also have some great benefits. Try and suit the camp to the child.

If you have a young child with ADHD, baseball camp may be way too slow where a basketball or soccer camp that has more constant movement may be more suitable.

If your child has an artistic flair, a children’s theater group might be just the ticket. In addition, visit local zoos and museums, and find out where and when summer festivals are scheduled in your area. Don’t forget to add selected activities to your calendar.

Some of the best social and creative summer moments are when kids get together in the neighborhood for a pickup game of stickball. ADHD kids can be amazingly creative in finding ways to have fun.

With your encouragement, the freedom to do nothing opens up countless possibilities to do anything and everything.

If your child ends up climbing the basketball hoop, a day at the museum may not be the right choice!

This includes The First Tee and the Boys and Girls Club support services that drive academic achievement and personal life skills. These services enhance their classroom learning while preparing them to graduate high school.

The winter season of the Monday Night Men’s Basketball League at the Safety Harbor Rec Center has seen a changing of the guard, as a new champion has been crowned.

The three way battle between the defending champs Delta Air Squad, the Monstars and Gulf Coast Retina has ended with the Retina capturing the title. The Retina finished the regular season undefeated, with the only blemish a rare 72-72 tie in week two against the MONSTARS. The MONSTARS, who finished second last season, edged out the

Sun Micro Ballerz 72-71 in the quarter finals behind the hot hand of David Pisarcik. They were then eliminated by Michael McCarthy and the Air Squad 78-67 in the semi finals.

The Retina beat the Blue Devils 5747 before taking on the Air Squad in the championship game. The Retina cruised to a 70-64 victory and the league title.

In the Thursday Night Men’s Basketball League in St. Petersburg, back-to - ba c k- to- ba c k league champions Hand Down, Man Down’s rein has come to an end.

They stumbled out of the gate this season and finished the regular season as the number three seed with a 6-3 record. Brad Depaul led the league in scoring with teammates Joseph and Edgar Bergollo fourth and sixth respectively.

Pick Yo Poison has been the surprise team of the season and finished the regular season with an 8-1 record and the number one seed. Their only loss came at the hands of Hand Down, Man Down in the regular season finale, 61-45.

The Poison eliminated the Freshmen 53-43 in the semi finals while Hand Down, Man Down were beaten by The South Siders, 58-52 in the other semi. Pick Yo Poison cranked it up a notch or two in the championship game as they just manhandled The South Siders, 9057 to secure the league title.

Volley America Juniors

Spalding Beach Volleyball Tournament Series Volley America Juniors has a big line up of events for the 2016 beach season All players under 18 years of age are eligible to play in a Volley America Juniors tournament.

Volley America offers divisions for boys & girls 18 and under, 16 and under, 14 and under and 12 and under.

Among these events, Volley America Juniors will host regional championships in Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, New York, Rhode Island, Ohio, and California.

Qualifiers will be held in several regions offering players the opportunity to win a bid to Regionals (entry fee + $100/ player for travel reimbursements).

Teams participating in regional events will have a chance to win a trip to Volley America Junior Nationals, which will be held in Pt. Pleasant, NJ on August 6-7, 2016.

Trip winners will receive free entry into the tournament plus $200/player in travel expense reimbursements.

All players are eligible and encouraged to compete in both Regionals and Nationals.

Junior Nationals will include a four-day series of clinics, camps and tournaments.

Thursday, August 4, there will be a college showcase where players will get to show off their skills in front of college recruiters. Friday, August 5, will be a clinic where players can practice and get ready for the big

America Juniors tournament they participate in that count towards the Volley America Junior Grand Prix. The top 15 players in each division at the end of the year will receive a prize from Volley America.

All tournament players are required to have a Volley America membership.

Memberships cost $15/player and run from 1/1 to 12/31 of the calendar year.

The St. Petersburg Tennis Center (SPTC) is proud to announce one of their coaches, David Despard, has completed the extensive education requirements to earn the Professional Tennis Registry’s (PTR) highest coaching certification of PTR Master of Tennis, Junior Development.

PTR Master of Tennis qualification matches the National Council on Accreditation of Coaching Education at the highest level, Level 5. These standards at different levels are used by many other sports and education bodies in the USA and are recognized and endorsed by the United States Olympic Committee.

There are specific requirements to apply and be accepted for this

prestigious qualification. It is open to PTR members who hold a Professional rating and develops the coach’s ability to plan comprehensive club programs for all ages of junior players and to use competence based coaching skills.

Despard is Director of Junior Tennis at SPTC. He joined the center in 2013, and is the coordinator of the Courier’s Kids tennis program and works extensively with the USTA initiative 10-and-under.

Innisbrook will be participating in the 2016 PGA Junior League.

Their goal this year is to have forty junior golfers to form four teams so they can have their own league. This would give an opportunity to more players, keeping all the matches at Innisbrook, as well as, guarantee a post season all-star team.

Any level of player from age 8 to 13 through August 1st, 2016 is eligible.

The cost will be $195 which includes a team jersey, bag tag, golf balls, orientation, skills event, five 2-hour practices (Wednesday afternoons) and 6 matches (Saturday afternoons).

HARD BALL...

The defending Florida Baseball League Champion, the Tampa Thunder, opened this new season on an auspicious note by dropping their first two games of the season, 9-7 to the Tampa Bay Expos and a 1-0 heartbreaker to the Dade City Brewers. Since then, the Thunder, behind the bat of shortstop Chris Gromley, have won four in a row and are just a half game behind Team USA in the National League.

Gromley is leading the National League with a .565 average and had a season high five RBI’s in a 16-0 shellacking of the Tampa Padres.

Vinny Lally has been the ace of the pitching staff going 2-0 and allowing just a lone run in 12 innings for a miniscule .75 ERA. He has fanned 23 batters while yielding just six free passes and eight hits.

BACK AT THE YARD...

The East Lake Little League Majors Light Blue team defeated the Holiday Tigers 9-3 on April 13th and were named the District 12 North Pool Champion. They played the District 12 South pool champions, the Dunedin Royals, in the Majors in-season championship game Thursday, April 14th in Holiday.

Both teams played hard, but it wasn’t East Lake’s night. The Royals came out on top in a tight game, 6-5.
