ADHD, SPORTS AND SUMMER CAMP Alice Cooper wrote a song about it, “School’s Out for Summer!”

It’s a great time of the year for kids, the weather is warm, and it’s time to play. There may have been a week or so of summer camp, but the rest of the time is what man has always wanted, Freedom! The ability to do whatever you want, whenever you want, until you’ve done it for a while. That’s the time you may hear your ADHD child speaking the most spine tingling phrase, I’m bored, there’s nothing to do.

And make time at the end of the day for the family to relax, kick back and even you know...talk.

It’s not called summer vacation for nothing, but even adults have basic responsibilities when they are off from work. So keep some basic family rules and routines in place.

It’s tempting to let kids stay up later in summer, and a bit of that is OK. But remember that even a little sleep deprivation can lead to irritability and meltdowns at any time of year.

So try to maintain basic bedtime habits. Stick to scheduled chores, as well as other established routines.

For example, a whole day in front of the TV should be off limits even during summer months.

Take advantage of the summer recreational and educational

opportunities that are abundant in the Tampa Bay area. Sports is a great way for your child to burn off some energy and the structure and interaction of a sports camp can also have some great benefits.

Try and suit the camp to the child.

If you have a young child with ADHD, baseball camp may be way too slow where a basketball or soccer camp that has more constant movement may be more suitable. If your child has an artistic flair, a children’s theater group might be just the ticket. In addition, visit local zoos and museums, and find out where and when summer festivals are scheduled in your area. Don’t forget to add selected activities to your calendar. When you plan ahead of time and write it down, you’re more likely to do it.

During the school year, you set a regular study time for your child because it helps him or her get the work done.

So after work, toss the ball around in the back yard, take a bike ride, or go for ice cream.

ADHD parents need not dread the summer. With some planning and wise choices, the summer can be a great time full of new experiences and new friends. So go ahead and schedule some activities, then get out of the way and let your child do what comes naturally.

AROUND TOWN...

A the Largo March Madness Soccer Shootout, the Oldsmar Thunder took home the gold in the U9 girls division. The Thunder dominated the regular season comprising a 14-1-1 record. They went undefeated at the Region C Cup 3-0 and won two other tournament titles during the year.

The Thunder opened the March Madness tournament with a 5-2 victory over the Tampa Bay United Red. Next up, Oldsmar played the West Pasco Red team to a scoreless deadlock. With a win and a tie under their belt, the Oldsmar girls improved to 2-0-1 with a convincing 8-1 victory over West Pasco Black, earning them a spot in the finals and a rematch with Tampa Bay United.

In the finals, the Thunder outlasted the United team 3-2 to earn the tournament championship.

The Oldsmar Thunder’s offensive explosion was led by Bianca Diapoulis, Ella Greisgraber, Stella Robinson, Aubrey Malone, Mia Quattrocki, Dalma Zabo

and Marissa Weber. Their stellar defense shut down the opposing team scorers, allowing just four goals in the tournament behind the brick wall of goal keeper Chloe Beaty and defenders Jenica Stenzel, Madison Hauk and Isabella Surace.

The Oldsmar Lightning took the U10 girls title with the Lightning outscoring their opponents 24-4.

Top goal scorers for the Lightning were Katie Raleigh, Katie Koncal, Amanda Chau, Cady Triplett, Sarah HoTung and Amanda Simpson, The Dunedin Phillies won the In Season Junior Baseball Championship.

The Phillies knocked off Largo and East Lake to win Pool D. Dunedin beat a second East Lake team in the semi finals to advance to the title game against Clearwater.

This allows accelerated students to move rapidly and, for students who need it, a little more time to ensure mastery of the skills and lessons being learned.”

Today’s families have so many activities packed into their week - get to work, get to school, get to sport’s practice, make that music lesson. With so much to get done, there seems to be little time to just sit and talk. However, think about time in your car, time at dinner, or even time at bedtime.

Many of our vehicles are equipped with DVD players and other types of entertainment systems. Instead of pushing in your child’s favorite movie,

try talking. What did we do before this fabulous technology? Remember Punch-Buggy, or how about Eye-Spy? These fun (or annoying) games got families talking and playing and having fun together.

Dinners now consist of food, drink, and technology. Restaurants are equipped with TVs and video games to hold our interest. Children are no longer taught to sit and have conversation with others at their table. They are either on their latest device or roam about restaurants while their parents consult their devices for the latest trends. Children are playing Duck-Duck-Goose while their parents are texting work partners, friends, or even each other! Doesn’t anyone talk at dinner anymore?

Girls Inc of Pinellas Completes Major Renovation

At the Grand Re-Opening, The STEM Lab was dedicated to Tech Data Corporation and Cisco Systems for their generous support of Girls Inc STEM Programs.

It has been a very busy spring for

Girls Inc of Pinellas! Over $300,000 of renovations were recently completed including the installation of a new STEM Lab (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

Every room in the center has a clean, fresh look with new paint, flooring, ceiling tiles and cabinets.

The kitchen was remodeled adding a new commercial stove and range hood.

Girls Inc partnered with The Edible Peace Patch Project and installed 9 organic garden beds with the help of volunteers from Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and the Junior League of St. Petersburg. The beds are designed with a modified huglekultur technique which is a layering method of various materials to build rich healthy soils in what is otherwise harsh and nutrient deficient sugar sand.

With funding from Kohl’s Cooks for Kids, Girls Inc partnered with All Children’s Hospital and their Fit for

TruBeauty Movement and Heather Hooke, owner and yoga instructor, will mentor girls on things such as self-esteem and healthy lifestyles.

All Kids program to teach healthy cooking to the girls.

On April 9th, Girls Inc of Pinellas celebrated its Grand Re-Opening of the newly renovated center.

Assisted by the Pinellas Park Chamber of Commerce, the center welcomed dignitaries including Pat

As a Guardian ad Litem, you advocate in court and in the child welfare system for abused, abandoned, or neglected children. The Guardian ad Litem visits the child every month, becomes familiar with the child’s case, and makes recommedations to the court to help ensure the child has a safe, caring, and stable home.

No prior experience is necessary; you will be well trained and supported by an experienced supervisory and legal staff. Once trained, volunteers spend an average of ten hours a month.

Build-A-Model Camp The Armed Forces History Museum is pleased to announce that its ever-popular BuildA-Model Camp is returning for multiple dates in 2015.

The museum’s Build-A-Model Camp offers a bevy of amenities to children while providing families with quality interaction and fun. Each child receives his or her own take home model to build alongside professionals from the Pelikan Model Club. They also receive a set of customized dog tags, a ride on the museum’s Virtual Voyager Simulator like those seen at popular theme parks, full access to the museum and discount admission for parents.

With a value of $50, the BuildA-Model Camp is just $18 per child. Parents are admitted for $9.95 (regularly $17.95). Advance reservations are suggested by calling Kathy Weed, Sales Coordinator, at 727.539.8371 ext. 110 or emailing Kathy@ armedforcesmuseum.com.

Believing Tampa Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to help people who suffer with spinal cord injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and other neurological impairments to have access to advanced rehabilitation therapy. Since insurance companies do not cover the specialized long term therapy that activity based exercise centers offer, potential clients who are not able to afford

MilPro Publications rehabilitative therapy costs do not have the opportunity to seek recovery options that are beneficial to their well being and quality of life. This event will help to fund a therapy assistance program that would enable the individual to participate in a therapy program geared towards recovery.

Registration begins at 7 a.m.

Shotgun scramble time is 8 a.m. The registration fee of $100 for individuals or $380 for foursome includes the greens fee on the beautiful Westchase Golf Club, a cart and a prime lunch served when players finish their rounds of play.

CITY OF SAFETY HARBOR 727-724-1530 Fishing Camp

Ages: 7-12 9:00am – 12:00pm June 8-11, 15-18, 22-25 Anglers will learn the how-to’s of fishing in this exciting outdoor camp located at the beautiful Safety Harbor Marina. Tying knots, baiting, catching, catch & release, conservation, reading tides/weather and much more!

This camp includes rod, reel, baits & tackle. Friday will be a make-up day in the event of rain.

Ages: 10-13 9:00am – 12:00pm June 8-June 12 June 22-June 26 Make a splash with ACA certified instructor, Ken, and learn the ways to glide on the water. This camp will provide campers with the knowledge of safe and proper kayaking techniques. All equipment is provided. Campers must be able to swim. Once this camp is complete, move on up to the next level: Kayak Camp Level 2.

Hip Hop Dance Camp

Ages: 5-14 1:00pm – 4:00pm June 29-July 2 This fun, high energy dance camp focuses on movement, coordination, rhythm, timing and teamwork! This camp will include learning rhythmic dance moves and incorporating the learned moves into a dance routine. At the end of the week, a performance will be put on for the parents.

Skate Camp

Ages: 7-13 9:00am – 12:00pm June 15-18, June 29-July 2 July 13-16, 27-30 Come learn how to shred at the newly remodeled Ian Tillman Skate Park! Put down the remote control and get out to the skate park for some summer fun. Learn basics, improve your skating game, and learn some new tricks from our sponsored skateboard instructor. Helmets, boards, and waivers required.

Tennis Camp

Ages: 6-13 9:00am – 11:00am June 15-June 18 July 6-July 9 July 20-July 23 This camp will focus on building skills of proper grips, footwork, strokes, volleys, and serves while fostering a love of the game with TheTennisConnection.com. Bring a racquet, lots of water, and a smile to the tennis courts!

Speed & Agility Camp

Ages: 8-13 5:00pm – 6:30pm June 22-June 25 What is the best workout to increase speed and agility? Come join Coach Andy at the track to learn and experience some great workouts and running drills to improve your performance in any sport!

Cheerleading Camp

Ages: 5-14 9:00am – 12:00pm June 29-July 2 Get pumped up to learn the fundamentals of cheerleading like chants, cheers, jumps and dance moves for the field, court, or rink.

This camp focuses on beginner and intermediate levels with a routine presentation at the end of camp.
