TAMPA BAY PATRIOTS Have Strong Start
The Tampa Bay Patriots of the Florida Football Alliance are off to a great start of the 2016 season, winning their first four games of the season to sit atop the North Division. Tampa Bay opened the season on the road by annihilating the Jacksonville XMen 35-zip at the Bob Hayes Field in Jacksonville. Patriot quarterback Brian Koesling connected on 7 of 11 passes for 107 yards and three touchdowns. His lone blemish was the one interception he tossed. Wideout Matt Brevi had three receptions for 46 yards and was on the receiving end of two of those TD passes. Running back, Dante Evans, rushed for 50 yards on ten carries to keep the clock moving for Tampa Bay. Place kicker Derrick Scott was a perfect 5 for 5 on PATs, earning him the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week.
setting up Tampa Bay with great field position to start the game. The Patriots defense made sure that was the only kickoff opportunity for Agbede as they held the XMEN out of the end zone all day.
travelled the I-4 corridor to square off with the Orlando Rattlers at the Hungerford Stadium in Eatonville. The Rattlers lost their opener to the reining league champion Southwest Florida Gladiators. The Patriots dismissed any illusions that that first game was a fluke as they scored early and often en route to a one sided 50-8 victory. QB Brian Koesling picked up right where he left off in week one, tossing the missile for 248 yards while missing on just two of his eleven passes. He had another three touchdown passing day and this time, no picks.
Running back Darius Bing led all rushers in week two gaining 94 yards on just five touches for an amazing average of 18.8 yards per carry. Most of those yards were gained when he scampered for a 56 yard touchdown On the defensive side run. He also picked of the ball, Rashad up 38 more yards Fitts had a pick while on three receptions. The Patriots’ defensive line was dominant again as Jamaul Butts, Theron Marshall and Eric Bennett all recorded sacks. Linebacker Cliff Lespinasse and defensive back Antonio Wallace each had five unassisted tackles. Derrick Scott was called on to punt for the first time this season as the potent Tampa Bay offense now has punted a total of one time in two games. Scott has been kept busy with thirteen extra point opportunities. He was successful on 85% of those attempts. After two road victories, the Pats would finally get to play in front of their home crowd in week three. Let’s face it, after two weeks, the Patriots have yet to really be tested. That was about to change as head
coach Tarver would have to prepare his team for the reining champions in week three. The Gladiators won their first two games beating the same teams, Rattlers and XMen, that Tampa Bay beat, only in not quite the same dominating fashion. One thing is clear, both the Gladiators and Patriots have dominating defenses, with stout lines and shutdown corners. Quarterbacks beware, this would not be a shoot out, first to blink wins. The two teams settled into a game of field position as neither team was able to muster any real sustained offensive drives in a scoreless first half. Early in the third quarter, the Gladiators broke the scoring drought and took a 6-0 lead. That lead would prove to be short lived as the
Tampa Bay offense, stifled for more then two quarters, exploded for two quick scores. Pats’ quarterback Brian Koesling got hot at the right time, throwing scoring passes to Matt Brevi and Marcell Williams in less than four minutes to take a 14-6 lead. The Tampa Bay defense put some points of their own on the board as they sacked Gladiator QB Joshua Shannon in the end zone for a safety, giving the Patriots a ten point lead. With the third quarter winding down, Koesling hit Williams for a another scoring pass, giving Tampa Bay an almost insurmountable 22-6 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Pats went to the running game to milk the clock and Antonio Wallace pounded the rock for 81 yards on 15 carries and Darius Bing rumbled into the end zone to put the game away. The Gladiators put a late score on the board but it was too little too late, as the Patriots held on to a 28- 14 victory to remain undefeated. Rashad Fitts led the team with seven unassisted tackles, Demetrius Ingram had two interceptions and Theron Marshall recovered a fumble for another dominating performance by the defense. After a dismal first half, Koesling ending up passing for 157 yards on only six completed passes, but three of them went for scores. With the game over, the Gladiators and Pats completed the first pass in the North Division with three wins each. Up next, Tampa Bay went back on the road knocking off the Miami Blackhawks of the South Division 22-8.
Linebacker Cliff Lespinasse leads the team in tackles.
Tampa Bay finished the month of February at home against the Key West Sun Devils.

oak grove BACK IN THE SADDLE again Middle School basketball is fun. It is a developmental program, getting kids ready for high school and beyond. They improve upon the fundamentals, hone their skills, win a few , lose a few and then move on. No one associates the term “dynasty” with middle school. That is reserved college Division I teams like the Dukes and Kentuckys. Unless, of course, you live in north central Pinellas County where the words Oak Grove Middle School Dynasty are as commonplace a phrase as Let’s go to the beach. Expectations are a given if you’re a member of the Oak Grove Middle School Golden Knights basketball team. Three seasons ago, the team saw a 33 game undefeated streak come to a close in the third game of the season, as they were beaten by the Morgan Fitzgerald Phantoms. Oddly enough, it was Oak Grove that ended the Phantoms’ back to back undefeated seasons with a victory on opening day of the 2010-2011 season that started the 33 game winning streak of their own. But the Knights bounced back and finished that season off with consecutive victories and won the Division Championship again. The season before that, the
team went 10-0 and won the Division Championship. The season before that... well, you’re starting to see the picture. A departure from that pattern occurred the last two seasons. A
are respectable records for most teams, but let’s face it, Oak Grove is not most teams and Coach Jamey Bâby is not most coaches. And three consecutive subpar seasons would simply not do!
Xavier Wahr pushing the ball up the floor.
young team without any returning veterans went 6-4 last season. The season before that, the team saw three top point guards move out of town at the start of the season. Those
Coach Bâby and his Golden Knights would have their work cut out for them, coming into this season if they wanted to reverse fortunes and return to the glory days of winning streaks and division titles. The first obstacle to overcome would be lack of size. Oak Grove has a long history of dominating big men that controlled the glass and scored buckets in the paint. This season, they would have to find another way to score points other then pounding the ball down low. Speed, fast greasy speed, would be the team’s mantra, as a small, fast lineup would be employed. Speed would turn a size disadvantage into a dominating advantage.
The Oak Grove Golden Knights Boys Basketball team surprised a lot of people, including themselves, by going undefeated, winning the Pinellas County Central Division
MilPro Publications Championship. The Golden Knights opened their season at home against the Osceola Chiefs. Oak Grove came out of the gates on fire, jumped out to a 3212 half time lead and never looked back. With a 20 point lead, Coach Bâby emptied his bench as all 18 players saw playing time en route to a 52-43 victory. Xavier Wahr led a balanced attack with 10 points, as an even dozen Knights put points on the board. Up next, Oak Grove took on first year central division member, Clearwater Intermediate. Oak Grove was anything but welcoming
Page 13 as they again started fast cruising to a 30-12 half time lead. Daunte Asberry led all scorers with 12 points and Max Jones added 10 points in a runaway victory, 46-24. After two knockout wins, the Knights would face their first real test of the season as they headed to the land of the giants, the Morgan Fitzgerald Phantoms. Oak Grove would face not only a hostile environment, but a Phantom team that features the 6’4” and 6’5” twin towers. The Knights, using quickness to offset the Phantoms decisive size advantage, built a 21-13 first quarter lead, but the lead quickly
evaporated and the Morgan big men dominated inside. Oak Grove attacked aggressively, drawing foul after foul, but a dismal 6 of 25 from the stripe kept the game close. With the clock ticking down, Trevon Sermon buried a three pointer to seal the deal as the Knights held off a tough Phantom team 46-42. Seventh grader Michael Blake scored 14 to lead the offensive attack while Sermon added 10, including a pair of treys. With a 3-0 record nicely wrapped under the tree, the Knights came back from Christmas Break to take on last year’s co-champions, the Seminole Hawks. The two teams

Page 17 defeat, Oak Grove jumped out to a 22-9 lead and never looked back, pounding the Tigers into submission. Max Jones caught fire, scoring 20 p o i n t s , including three from behind the arch. Jones sat most of the second half as the Knight bench was emptied, making the lopsided win
the second half of the season on the road, matching up with a much improved Osceola Chiefs. Apparently not improved enough as the Golden Knights jumped out to a dozen point first half advantage. Oak Grove continued to apply the pressure, increasing their lead to 18 points as the third quarter closed out. The fourth quarter would prove to be no help to the Chiefs as the Knights remained unbeaten with a solid 5329 victory. Xavier Wahr and Max Jones had the hot hands for the Knights, scoring 17 and 16 points respectively. Michael Blake added eight points in the victory. The Knights’ next victim was Clearwater Intermediate. This game was never in doubt as Oak Grove raced out to a 26-9 half time lead and

played tight as Oak Grove held a six point lead at the half. In the third quarter, the Knights extended the lead to ten. The Golden Knights’ relentless full court pressure wore down Hawks, holding Seminole to a mere five fourth quarter points en route to a 58-31 blowout. Max Jones dropped a game high 18 points and Daunte Asberry added 15 points as Oak Grove remained undefeated at 4-0. With just one Central Division opponent left, the Knights made the trek to Largo with a perfect record and some payback on their minds. Looking to avenge last year’s bitter
look closer than it was, 64-44. Ten Oak Grove players put points on the board. With the end of the season’s first half, Oak Grove had seen all the competition and beat ‘em all. Now comes the second pass and be assured that the other teams took notice of that undefeated record and would be making adjustments. The

started
Max Jones had some big games for the Knights.
Page 18 never looked back. After the third quarter ended 4122, the Knights cleared the bench, playing all 18 players (which the team did 7 times this year), and held on for a 50-43 victory. Xavier Wahr once again led the way offensively with 14 points, while Daunte Asberry added 10. Ten players scored for Oak Grove. The Knights had regained the swagger this vaunted organization was used to having. They were undefeated and had been blowing out the competition. The question now was... Are they too confidant and ripe to fall? That question would be answered in game eight. The Knights would get a second look at the only team to keep pace with them, Morgan Fitzgerald with that giant front court. The Knights had narrowly escaped with a four point victory earlier in the year, but shot a meager 24% from the line. You can bet the Knights spent some extra time on foul shots during practice that week. The Phantoms also were looking forward to this re-match and came to play. Like two boxers feeling each other out, they both played a tentative first quarter that ended knotted at nine a piece. The Knights began to take control in the second quarter as they built a seven point half time lead.
MilPro Publications Oak Grove saved the best for the second half, outscoring Morgan 3620 en route to a 56-33 victory. Max Jones led a balanced attack, scoring 17 points. Daunte Asberry, Xavier Wahr, and Trevon Sermon scored ten, nine and eight points, respectively.
Seminole refused to go away, trailing just six points at the half. Oak Grove extended the lead to 39-30 after three quarters but the Hawks were still within striking distance. That would all end as the Knights put the pedal to the medal in the fourth quarter, out scoring Seminole 13-9 en Daunte Asberry scoring route to a 52-39 hard fought from long range. victory. Michael Blake and Daunte Asberry each tallied 12 points for the victors, while Xavier Wahr, Max Jones, Trevon Sermon, and Alonzo Perry had nine, eight, six and five points respectively. In the season finale, the Knights hosted arch-rival Largo. A dozen players scored as Oak Grove finished their unblemished season in style, routing the Tigers 51-31. Nelson Taylor had six points, AJ Wright and Andrew Kobani each had five points. Mike McLaughlin added three points.
Although not on fire from the line, the Gold Knights shot a respectable 41% from the stripe. The win moved their record to 8-0 and a confidant Knights team was back on the road the following week taking on Seminole. Possibly emotionally drained from the Morgan game, the Knights got more than they bargained for from a pesky Hawk team.
Coach Bâby commented, “This year’s team was small in size, but huge in quickness, hustle and effort.” With the start of another winning streak, all is right in the world of Oak Grove Middle School basketball. Only time will tell how many games in a row this team will win. And will some of these players have the same experience as the 2013 team where no player on that roster had ever experienced an Oak Grove loss in their middle school career? Yes, only time will tell, but don’t bet against ‘em!

brother-sister duo tear up the sportcourt New Port Richey... If you go to a dictionary (do they still have dictionaries?) and look up “Rink Rats” you would not be surprised to find pictures of nine year old inline hockey player Kaycee Cooper and her seven year old brother Travis. The two play at All Sports Arena in New Port Richey and are as much a fixture here as the concession stand. Kaycee is a third grader at Seven Springs Elementary School and started playing hockey at the tender age of five. Last season, as an eight year old, she played “up” in the Ten and Under Division. Not only did she hold her own, but she won the league’s Most Valuable Player Award. Now that she is nine years old, she will move up to the Twelve and Under Division.

three or fours older, that goal does not seem far out of reach. Travis Cooper, a second grader at Seven Springs Elementary School, lists math and PE as his favorite subjects. He also plays ‘up” in the Ten and Under Division and finished last season with 28 points. He says, “My sister doesn’t pass the puck enough.” Both Travis and Kaycee play on travel teams and have attended national tournaments and have plans to play in the National Hockey League some day. What does Kaycee like best about playing tournaments? “Beating the boys,” of course. ASA is located at 7716 Rutilio Court in New Port Richey. They can be reached by calling 727845-7808. tbsa earns top team points at isi winter classic The Tampa Bay Skating Academy of Countryside, along with 650 competitors from 14 states and Mexico, traveled to the RDV Sportsplex IceDen in Orlando for the 31st Annual International Skating Institute Winter Classic in February. But only one team took home the prestigious Robert Unger Trophy for most overall team points at the event and that was TBSAC. TBSAC is no stranger to this award, having won it four previous times in 1994, 1998 and 1999 as Centre Ice Countryside and most recently in 2008 as TBSAC. They are the only team to win five times since the inception of the competition. The team’s 1281.50 points were 133.5 points better than the second place team, the Skating Group of Greater Yo u n g s t o w n in Ohio, which tallied 1148. Third place went to the host team, RDV Sportsplex with 1065.50 points. ADULT REC ROUND-UP
ON THE HARDWOOD...
The winter season of the Monday Night Men’s Basketball League at the Safety Harbor Rec Center is closing in on playoff time. A three way battle had ensued between the defending champs Delta Air Squad, the Monstars and Gulf Coast Retina. The Retina and MONSTARS are both 5-0-1, playing to a rare 72-72 tie in week two. The Air Squad is 4-2 with their two losses coming at the hands the MONSTARS and Gulf Coast. The MONSTARS, who finished second last season, were missing league scoring runner up David Pisarcik for the playoffs and they truly missed his 30 points per game. Well, he is back and healthy,
averaging a bit over 26 points per game for third in the league. Delta Air Squad is led by Michael McCarthy and his 22 points per game. Tywan Hall and David Fisher of Block to the System are one-two in he league in scoring. Despite this scoring duo, the team is a surprising 2-4. But anything can happen when the win or go home playoffs begin March 7th. In the Thursday Night Men’s Basketball League in St. Petersburg, back-to-ba c k- to- ba c k league champions Hand Down, Man Down has stumbled a bit this season and finished the regular season as the number three seed with a 5-2 record. Brad Depaul leads the league in scoring with teammates Joseph and Edgar Bergollo fourth and sixth respectively. Pick Yo Poison has been the surprise team of the season and sits atop the league with a 6-1 regular season record and the number one seed. They are, however, coming off a brutal
loss to Hand Down, Man Down in the regular season finale, 61-45.
tossing around...
In the Tuesday Doubles Cornhole competition at the Yard of Ale Down Town in St. Pete, a champion has been crowned. Extra Butter, who finished the regular season in first place with a 7-1-0 record, knocked off Bmore Corny 2-zip to advance to the semi finals against K-FORCE, who finished the regular season with an even 4-4-0 record. Butter slipped past the FORCE 2-1 to advance to the championship match. The two seed, Maybe We’ll Get Better, got the better of THE ANNIHILATORS in the first round. They then knocked off the Hole Patrol 2-0 to set up the finals match. Maybe We’ll Get Better can’t get much better than a league title and that’s what they got after shutting out the Butter 2-zip for the championship. Ed MacDonald of Maybe We’ll Get Better leads the league with a 6.11 average score per inning. Pete Krull of K-Force is second with 5.85 and

As a Guardian ad Litem, you advocate in court and in the child welfare system for abused, abandoned or neglected children. The Guardian ad Litem visits the child every month, becomes familiar with the child’s case and makes recommedations to the court to help ensure the child has a safe, caring and stable home. No prior experience is necessary; you will be well trained and supported by an experienced supervisory and legal staff. Once trained, volunteers spend an average of ten hours a month. COMPETITION IS GOOD, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE FUN? Strike three! And the dejected
ten year old walks away, head down, dragging his bat behind him. He looks up and sees an angry coach and parents in the stands throwing up their hands in dismay as they lose the game. They lost the game! (A game is structured playing, usually undertaken for enjoyment and sometimes used as an educational tool. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). Playing sports is a great way for kids to burn up some excess energy in a positive way, as well as a way to develop some sport specific skills. There is more than physical skill at stake here, though. Sports can be very instrumental in developing life skills, too. But, just as important is having fun. Kids need fun ‘cause well... they’re kids!
become more competitive and with that, it seems, less fun. Here lies the rub and the question. What is more important, competition or just playing for fun? These two valuable and important components of sports should be balanced, but instead, they have become lopsided, with most of the emphasis on competition. Youth sports has, in
sitting on the bench in shock, as the wrong message is delivered by coaches and parents. A new attitude has also permeated youth sports. The attitude is that kids, in order to excel at a sport, need to specialize at an early age and then play it year-round. First off, less than one 1/2 of 1% of high school players will ever reach the pro ranks in one of the four major sports (baseball, basketball, football, and hockey). And to lower that percentage even more, not every kid on their little league team makes it on their high school squad. So the overall chance that little Johnny, although possessing a wonderful swing with that big orange plastic bat, will have a career as a professional athlete is pretty slim.
West Pasco’s Travis Hawks slides into third as Dunedin’s Lucas Passchino looks on during All-Star Tournament play. Little League does blend competition and fun as all kids get to play during the regular season, but only the best-of-the-best play on the All-Stars.
So much attention is given to college and pro athletes by the media and the enormous wealth and fame that accompanies them, the benefits for kids can get lost. As a result, youth sports has
many cases, gone over the edge when it comes to the importance of winning. Everyone has heard of, or seen, a crazed parent or coach having a meltdown on the diamond or in the gym because they lost the game. What results is a bunch of eight year old kids
However, the chance that Johnny will have a long career playing in a coed Sunday softball league is pretty good, provided that the fun of the sport is not drained out of him at a young age. A study done by Michigan State University revealed that, “by age 13, about 70% of kids have quit sports.”
Page 42 In many instances, fun is a few notches down on the priority list of coaches and parents. While fun is not so important, winning and the pressure that goes with it, is high on the list. Sometimes the emphasis on winning can overshadow the fact that sports is mostly about staying fit and healthy. However, going to the extreme in the opposite direction doesn’t really work either. In a well intentioned effort to keep it fun for everyone, some organizations play games where no score is kept and no winner or loser is declared. But if the kids are old enough to count, on the ride home, parents will be informed who won or lost, and the exact score, by the very kids who just played the game! In youth sports, there are organized leagues and also what is known as
MilPro Publications
... youth sports has become more competitive and with that, it seems, less fun...
pick-up games. But really, they are both organized, only the pickup games are organized by the kids and the leagues are organized by adults. There
are
advantages
and
disadvantages to each. Engaging in informal pick-up games allows kids to learn how to form teams, work with the other kids toward a common goal, develop rules, and take responsibility for following and enforcing them. When the adults are in charge, the right adults that is, the game stays more structured and coaches can teach the fundamentals and strategies of the sport. It does seem that when the adults are in charge, the focus is more on competition and when the kids are calling the shots, it’s more about fun. Blending competition and fun is a win-win for all. Some parents and community leaders have come to the conclusion that too much competition is not a healthy way to teach kids a sense of fair play. At the youth level,
Gymnasts from Pinellas Park’s Gold Medal Gymnastics, on the podium. The sport could be their ticket to college and in that case, competition is what they need... with a little fun on the side!
MilPro Publications fun and competition should be more balanced than they seem to be. The main focus in youth sports should not be competition for kids who really just want to play for the sheer enjoyment of it. When coaches and parents focus on winning, they often lose the opportunity to really teach life skills. However, competition is a fact of life and it is certainly a significant part of sports that should be valued even at the youth level. But, when it is overemphasized, problems arise. Another problem with youth sports is that not every kid has the opportunity to play or has limited time on the field. This is
Page 43 where parents need to determine what type of team is best for their child. If little Johnny plays on a competitive “travel team,” there’s a chance he might be riding the bench if he’s not as talented as some of the other players. That “fact of life” is usually made clear up front at tryouts. Going into that situation, it’s important that everyone involved (parent, child, coach) are on the same page. Putting the team first and learning to be a role player and not the star, can help build character under the right circumstances. If sitting is a problem then a recreational league might be a better fit. Most rec leagues have some sort of minimum play time requirement,
but that can have it’s own set of problems. If it’s late in a game and a player at the end of the bench didn’t get their minutes or atbats, a coach would be forced to put him in at a critical time of the game. If that kid strikes out with the bases loaded or puts up an air ball with the team down by a basket, he or she could take some unfair abuse from over-zealous players, coaches or even some parents in the stands. Some leagues take that decision out of the coaches hands by, for example, blowing the whistle every four minutes in a basketball game to put in the next group of players so all play equal minutes,
Players, coaches and parents of the Pinellas Park Thunderbirds Mighty Mite team celebrate winning the league’s Super Bowl. Blending competition and fun is a win-win for all.

regardless of the game situation. Little League Baseball does manage to blend competition and fun as all kids get to play during the regular season but only the best-of-the-best play on the competitive all-star teams. Over the years, a handful of kids who were written about in Your Sports News have made it to the pros. Largo youth football player, Dexter McCluster, was profiled in YSN in 1999 as a ten year old.
His answer to future plans? To play in the NFL. He is now in his sixth season with the Kansas City Chiefs. Palm Harbor Little League AllStar Ryan Harvey was drafted in the first round by the Chicago Cubs in 2003. But these two are the exception rather than the rule. By the way, both of those kids interviewed by YSN as 10-12 year olds, said playing sports was FUN! Although making it as a
pro is very rare, for some talented kids, sports can be the ticket to college and in those cases, competition is the key... with a lot of fun on the side. So, when evaluating your players, look not only at the vertical leap, fast ball speed or time in the 40... be sure to add the size of the smile... ‘cause they’re kids and sports should make kids happy!
