In youth sports, there are organized leagues and also what is known as pick-up games. But really, they are both organized, only the pick-

It does seem that when the adults are in charge, the focus is more on competition and when the kids are calling the shots, itâ€™s more about fun. Blending competition and fun is a win-win for all. Some parents and community leaders have come to the conclusion that too much competition is not a healthy way to teach kids a sense of fair play. At the youth level, fun and competition should be more balanced than they seem

However, competition is a fact of life and it is certainly a significant part of sports that should be valued even at the youth level. But, when it is overemphasized, problems arise. Another problem with youth sports is that not every kid has the opportunity to play or has limited time on the field. This is where parents need to determine what type of team is best for their

Page 7 child. If little Johnny plays on a competitive “travel team,” there’s a chance he might be riding the bench if he’s not as talented as some of the other players. That “fact of life” is usually made clear up front at tryouts. Going into that situation, it’s important that everyone involved (parent, child, coach) are on the same page. Putting the team first and learning to be a role player and not the star, can help build character under the right circumstances. If sitting is a problem then a recreational league might be a better fit. Most rec leagues have some sort of minimum play time requirement, but that can have it’s own set of problems. If it’s

late in a game and a player at the end of the bench didn’t get their minutes or at-bats, a coach would be forced to put him in at a critical time of the game. If that kid strikes out with the bases loaded or puts up an air ball with the team down by a basket, he or she could take some unfair abuse from overzealous players, coaches or even some parents in the stands. Some leagues take that decision out of the coaches hands by, for example, blowing the whistle every four minutes in a basketball game to put in the next group of players so all play equal minutes, regardless of the game situation. Kids need fun ‘cause well... they’re kids!

Over the years, a handful of kids who were written about in the Youth Sports News that have made it to the pros. Largo youth football player, Dexter McCluster, was profiled in YSN in 1999 as a ten year old. His answer to future plans? To play in the NFL. He is now in his sixth season with the Kansas City Chiefs. Palm Harbor Little League AllStar Ryan Harvey was drafted in the first round by the Chicago Cubs in 2003. But these two are the exception rather than the rule. By the way, both of those kids interviewed by YSN as 10-12

year olds, said playing sports was FUN! Although making it as a pro is very rare, for some talented kids, sports can be the ticket to college and in those cases, competition is the key... with a lot of fun on the side. So, when evaluating your players,

Under Armour is sponsoring a new Spring Flag Football league in 2015. The Under the Lights Flag Football league will play at the East Lake Youth Fields on Old Keystone Road. Part of a new nationwide Flag Football League, the goal is to develop and promote a competitive, confidence-building, non-contact football experience for ALL skill levels. The season runs March through May and is for boys and girls that are in 1st grade through 8th grade Kindergartners are eligible to play, but will play with the 1st and 2nd

Games will be held on Friday evenings, and voluntary practices are typically held before the games. Food trucks and music will be present at every game. Rosters are limited to 9 players, so everyone plays! The games are 4 10-minute quarters in a 6-vs-6 format, no rushing the QB. Registration is $150, which includes an Under Armour shirt. HOCKEY DAY IN TAMPA BAY Featuring all-time Lightning greats and Stanley Cup champions including Dave Andreychuk, Jay Feaster and John Tortorella, the Tampa Bay Lightning held its annual Hockey Day in Tampa Bay celebration on February 15 at Tampa’s Amalie Arena. An all-star game featuring area high school all-stars faced off with some big names on the bench. Former Tampa Bay Lightning coach John Tortorella coached one team and the captain of his 2004 Stanley Cup championship team, Dave Andreychuk coached the other. Coach Tortorella showed his coaching form as his team jumped out to an early 3-zip advantage. Countryside’s Steve Kuzio sent a tape to tape pass to Bloomingdale’s

A REBUILDING SEASON FOR OAK GROVE B’BALL Expectations are a given if you’re

a member of the Oak Grove Middle School basketball team. Two seasons ago, the team saw a 33 game undefeated streak come to an end in the third game of the season. The run of four consecutive division titles ended that season. This season, with no returning players with any significant playing time last year, the Oak Grove Knights finished with a respectable 6-4 record in a tough Central Division. The Knights made some noise early in the season in their opener against last season’s co-champion, the Morgan Fitzgerald Phantoms. The Phantoms were the team that ended that 33 game win streak two years ago and the Knights, no doubt, had not let that fact slip their minds. Oak Grove was down by five with 60 seconds left on the clock. The

Knights scored two quick baskets, cutting the lead to a lone point. The Phantoms hit a free throw, and Oak Grove had the ball, having to go 84 feet with just one tick on the clock. Seventh grader Jayion McCluster, nephew of NFL standout Dexter McCluster, inbounded the ball and threw a pass to the other free throw line to seventh grader Maxwell Jones. Jones tossed in a 15 footer off the glass to send the game into overtime. The Knights never looked back, winning the game by five. Oak Grove split hard fought games with both Morgan Fitzgerald and Largo. The Knights still had a shot at a piece of the division title the eve of the season finale against Seminole. The Knights came out on fire and jumped out to a 22-6 lead, before the Seminole duo of point guard Collin Sawada and Ray Collins took over. Sowada, the eighth grade point

It was a privilege coaching them.” So, it was a rebuilding season to say the least, but the rest of the league should be wary of what the future holds, as Oak Grove will certainly be looking to make up for lost ground next season.
