HITTING THE LINKS In the summer of 1996, a young amateur

golfer turned pro and at that moment, the game that was viewed by many as an old guy’s sport for ex-football players and business executives, took on an all new appeal. That golfer’s name was Tiger Woods and the new appeal caused an avalanche of young kids to put down their baseball bats and pick up a nine iron.

When the 21 year old Woods crushed the Masters field in April 1997, golf was a stagnant sport that saw 2 million new players each year, but also 2 million quitters. Within days of the 1997 Masters, the sport gained 3 million new players as a tremendous influx of dads began to teach their sons how to play golf. Despite Woods’ recent personal troubles, his legacy has proved to be a lasting one.

The American Junior Golf Association was formed in 1978 and held its first national tournament the same year; the Tournament of Champions at Inverrary Country Club in Lauderhill, Fl. Today there are over 5,000 members with over 70 tournaments held each year.

If you’re a kid interested in hitting the links, there are lots of options for you! With leagues, camps, group and individual instruction and junior tournaments, Tampa Bay area kids of all experience levels have a place to go. For players who stick with it, most high schools have a golf team and golf college scholarships abound for both young men and women.

Check out the backgrounds of some of our area pros. Many of them played through their junior years, played for

their high school teams and then earned golf scholarships to college.

From 1945 through 1962, the club was the home of the PGA of America. During that time the club hosted 18 Senior Tour Championships, and this was the beginning of the Senior PGA Tour. Whether it’s your first time on the course, or just the first time this week, staying on top of this Donald Ross-designed jewel is always a pleasurable task. That’s why Dunedin Golf Club welcomes you to sharpen your shots at their practice facility. Because if you’re going to play a Donald Ross, you better practice that way!

Dunedin Golf Club has a full-size driving range allowing you to use all of your clubs. There are 20-25 hitting stations and a practice sand bunker. The range is 250 yards long, with netting at the end allowing for practice with all clubs including driver.

In addition to the driving range, Dunedin has a short-game practice area and a separate practice putting green. The short game practice area consists of two target greens and a large sand bunker. The short range can accommodate shots up to 100 yards.

LESSONS: When you operate a Donald Ross golf course, it’s a good idea to offer golf lessons as well! Because as anyone who knows anything about golf knows, “Rossian” courses can be tricky, playing differently every day. So a few

lessons can never hurt. Two PGA teaching professionals are available for lessons, at $35 per 1/2 hour and $60 for a full hour.

Junior Programs: Assistant PGA pro Dave Williams specializes in junior teaching and holds junior group lessons.

Junior lessons are held on Saturday morning from 10am to 11am for $10 per person.

2014 Summer Junior Golf Camps Summer Camp will be conducted for 3 weeks this year; June 16-19, July 7-10 and July 28-31. TENNIS ANYONE?

Tennis anyone? In the past, that was

a familiar phrase heard at country clubs around the nation and on movie sets in Hollywood. But, nowadays, tennis’ net is cast over a much broader segment of society.

At recreation centers, YMCA’s, and country clubs across Tampa Bay, you will find young hopefuls knocking little yellow balls back and forth under the watchful eye of a slew of professional instructors who are looking for the next Novak Djokovic or Maria Sharapova.

Bryan has been teaching tennis at East Lake since 1988. He began playing tennis at 10 years of age and played for his high school tennis team in Maryland. He attended High Point College in North Carolina.

He coordinates a staff of eight tennis professionals at the club, conducting the Junior Development Tennis Program for children ages 4 through 18.

At this year’s French Open, names like Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Rafael Nadal are topics of conversation at dinner tables all over Tampa Bay. So, if little Timmy or Amanda has been breaking windows with a frying pan and rubber ball in your living room, it may be time to head out to the courts.

Summer Camp this year runs from June 9th through August 8th, Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm every day. Camp includes tennis, swimming, snacks, lunch and games for beginner and intermediate players, ages 5 to 16. Half day camps are also available, if space permits. Early drop off at 8am is available for $10/hour.

Programs: Tots & Pee Wees (ages 4-6), Go For Gold (ages 6-12), a progressive series of classes to learn the game (Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold), Teen Tennis for beginning, intermediate and advanced levels and the Tournament Training Program for children competing in USTA tournaments. Over 150 children regularly participate in the year-round instructional program. ALL PROGRAMS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Other features include a pro shop offering tennis equipment and apparel, a lighted practice wall, locker rooms, a ball machine and picnic area. The 20 acre wooded site also features a fitness course. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday, 8am to 10 pm, Friday, 8am to 7pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 8am to 4pm.

Programs: Summer Camp for junior players ages 6–17. Camps are offered in full-day or half-day increments, on either a weekly or daily basis from June 9th through August 15th. Times are 8am to 5pm for full day camp and 8am to noon for 1/2 day camp. Prices vary by Play Pass, Rec Card or no card, so call for more details.

Tennis Professional Johnny Angel

Tennis Association) Registered Coach, the highest of all certifications. In order to be registered, a coach must have verifiable coaching experience and be endorsed by tour players. There are only 35 registered WTA coaches, only 8 of them from the US. Angel started playing tennis at the age of 6 and graduated from college with a major in Physiology and Ethology. After graduation, he began playing on the pro tour and moved to Florida in 1986. He coaches nationally ranked players, including professional players such as Melinda Czink, who was ranked 57th in the world. RAYS EDGE DIAMONDBACKS FOR AAA TITLE The Greater Dunedin Little League hosted twenty-nine teams from seven leagues as they squared off in May for the title of AAA Spring champions.

After the preliminary rounds of the tournament, the Clearwater Rays were seeded six and the Dunedin Diamondbacks seeded fourth out of the eight remaining teams. The Rays knocked off the three seed Countryside Blue Jays, and then the two seed Clearwater Phillies to advance to the championship game.

The Diamondbacks beat the top seed, East Lake Rays to punch their ticket to the finals.

The Rays added to their lead in the top of the third as Mitchell Day was hit by a pitch to open the inning.

Caiden Alexander crushed a 2-2 fast ball for a double and Ryan Kimmet ripped his second two bagger of the day, clearing the bases and sending Orlowski to the showers. With the score 5-0, Brandon Meurer came on in relief, struggled a bit but put out the fire. Dunedin came roaring back in the bottom of the third as Cook experienced some control problems giving free passes to Logan Meurer, Orlowski and Christian Curnow to load the bases with one out. With a 1-1 count, Cook left a fast ball up in the zone and Jessiah Branch hit a laser shot up the middle for a two run single, putting Dunedin back in the game.

Tyler Puckett knocked in two more runs with a base hit and knocked Cook out of the game. Clearwater went to the bullpen and brought in Ryan Madonia to hold onto the one run lead. Madonia enticed Vetter to bounce back to the mound to end the inning.

The Diamondbacks sent Mason Orlowski to the hill in the top of the first and he made short work of the Rays’ bats, allowing a one out double to Ryan Kimmet before retiring the side. Ian Cook was on the bump for the Rays and kept the Diamondbacks in check for a scoreless first. The Rays drew first blood in the top of

Meurer sent the Rays down in order in the top of the sixth giving his team a chance, down by three, with last licks. Madonia strolled to the mound with a closer’s mentality for the bottom of the sixth. McNally led off and worked the count for a base on balls. Up next, Blackburn tried to push the ball through the right side, but nearly hit into a double play as McNally was out at second and Blackburn beat the throw to first.

With Logan Meurer at the plate, Blackburn used his wheels to swipe second and get in scoring position.

Madonia blew a fastball past Meurer for the second out, but Orlowski got a bit of payback with an RBI single up the middle, and went to second on the throw home. Down by two and a man on second, Christian Curnow worked the count full, but Madonia got a third strike to end the game, giving the Rays the championship.
