WHERE ARE THEY NOW? BOXER KEITH THURMAN C l e a r w a t e r, Thurman was not Keith “ O n e Ti m e ” Thurman, he was just Keith. Like the hundreds of kids we profiled over the years, Thurman answered the question, “What are your future plans?” with,

their buddies on Sundays. Keith Thurman? Well, he is the WBA Welterweight Champion of the World. Ben Getty, who passed in 2009 at the age of 63, had worked with the likes of “Sugar” Ray Leonard and Olympic bronze medalist Kenneth Gould, prior to working with Thurman. The Vietnam War veteran began training Thurman at the age of seven and it quickly became apparent he had something special. Due to program changes at Ross Norton, Thurman ended up moving to the St. Petersburg Boxing Gym Thurman with the late Ben Getty.
Twenty years ago we wrote a cover
story called the “The Next Oscar De La Hoya?” The story was about a local amateur boxer who was training with Clearwater youth boxing trainer Ben Getty. The fighter’s name was... actually, I don’t remember! What I do remember is a little side bar to the story with a photo of a seven year old kid who Getty was also training. The teenage fighter on the cover later succumbed to the streets, got involved with drugs and in trouble with the law and drifted from the public eye. That little seven year old kid’s name would be one we would all not soon forget. His name was Keith Thurman. When I first met Ben Getty at the Ross Norton Recreation Center in

at the age of 14. There he met Dan Birmingham who, after Getty’s passing, became Thurman’s full time trainer. Coming up through the amateur ranks, where he routinely stopped fighters with head gear and 10 ounce gloves, fellow fighters referred to Thurman as “Samson,” a reference to the Biblical character whose power was derived from his long locks. He says he “put people to sleep” in the amateur ranks and that
As an amateur, Thurman won two National Silver Gloves Championships and a 2006 National PAL Championship. In 2007, Thurman traveled to Houston, Texas as he made a push to represent the United States at the 2008 Olympic games held in Beijing. He lost two close decisions to Demetrius Andrade at the Olympic Trials and finished second in the 152-pound weight class. Thurman finished his amateur career with 101 victories. The undefeated Andrade, who is a former WBO light middleweight title holder, lost his belt to inactivity. Although Andrade fights up a weight class, it is conceivable that the two may meet again with a world title on the line. On November 9th, 2007 Thurman made his professional debut at the A
La Carte Event Pavilion in Tampa. His opponent was Kensky Rodney of Panama. Rodney did not make it out of the first round as Thurman recorded a TKO at 2:03 of the first round. Thurman would go on to record nine straight first round KO’s before a freak accidental clash of the heads against Francisco Garcia of Mexico ended in a “no decision” for the only blemish on his pro record. On July 7, 2013 Thurman won the Interim WBA Welterweight title at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas by knocking out Diego Gabriel Chaves in the 10th round. He had the “Interim” removed when he outlasted former world champion, Robert Guerrero for a unanimous decision in March of last year at the MGM Grand in Vegas. He made his
third defense of the title in June with a decision over another ex world champ, Shawn Porter to improve to 27-0.

swimmer Melanie Margalis, came from deep in the pack to finish second with a time of 2:10.11 in the 200 Meter Individual Medley at the USA Olympic Trials held in Omaha, Nebraska last month. After a blistering 30.26 seconds in the freestyle leg, the second place finish earned her a place on the 2016 Olympic team headed for Rio. We first met Margalis when she was
a competitive club swimmer for the St. Petersburg Aquatics Team, coached by Fred Lewis. Her answer to the question, “What are your future plans?” was to “Win a medal at the 2012 Olympics games.” Margalis fell short of that goal when she finished sixth in the preliminaries of the 200 IM at the trials, but was disqualified on the back-to-breast turn. “I wanted so badly to be able to swim at finals and feel that energy,” Margalis said,
adding that the experience left her a little scarred, and scared whenever the 200 IM came up at meets. “For a long time, I would get such bad anxiety, especially if I heard people were getting DQ’d for back-tobreast turns. I’d have a moment of panic before my race.” All those fears were put to rest last month at the trials. Margalis graduated from Countryside High School where she was a three-time state champion,
MilPro Publications and she held the state record in the 200-yard IM. For four years in a row, Margalis was named her team’s MVP. Proving her versatility, she also swam the 500-yard free in 2009 in which she also won a state championship. After her performances that season, she was named the 20092010 Pinellas County Female Athlete of the Year. That same year, she was named to the National Youth Championship Team. A college choice wasn’t too difficult for Margalis, especially after she saw how successful her brother, R o b e r t , had been at Georgia. She committed to the Lady Bulldogs, and immediately made an impact. As a freshman she got a lot of exposure on the national level. She swam as part of the winning 400 free relay team, and individually, she finished sixth in the 200 IM and ninth in the 400 IM at the NCAA Championships. Coach Jack Baurle mentioned that Margalis could’ve performed even better as a freshman, if she had not been overwhelmed with the speed of her teammates.
Page 13 During her sophomore year, Margalis was twice named the SEC Swimmer of the Week. At SEC’s, she picked up three secondplace finishes, the 400 IM, 200 IM and as a leg of the 400 free relay. Margalis also finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke and was on the winning 800 free relay. At the
NCAA Championships in 2012, she finished sixth once again in the 200 IM and 10th in the 400 IM. This year she also finished in the semi-final of the 200 breaststroke, finishing 11th. Margalis had her first individual SEC win in 2013, when she won the 200 IM. She also finished fourth in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and swam on two relays. She qualified for the NCAA Championships for her third year in a row, and Margalis qualified for two championship
finals. She finished sixth in the 200 IM and seventh in the 400 IM. Margalis also finished 11th again in the 200 breast to help the Lady Bulldogs win their fifth national title. During her senior year, Margalis was making headlines across the swimming world. Many people were hearing her name for the first time and she was a frontrunner at the NCAA Championships. As team captain, M a r g a l i s finished second in the 200 IM by less than .20 seconds and third in the 400 IM. She also picked up a fourth-place finish in the 200 breast. Now the next chapter of her swim life is about to unfold as she goes after Olympic Gold. She will have two cracks at a medal in Rio as, in addition to the 200 IM, she will be part of the women’s 800 meter relay team. I’m sure we’ll all be glued to our TV sets in August, cheering:

Golf Tournament at the Bardmoor Golf and Tennis Club in Largo. The weather was warm and sunny and made for a quick round and low scores! The Freedom Rockets shot an impressive score of 52 (-20) to sit alone at the top of the leader board (including holing out from 165 yards on hole 7 for a double eagle)! The team took home the first place trophies, championship duffle bags and free rounds of golf at The Eagles for their efforts. In second place, Spieth Softly, Carry a Big Stick came in with a respectable 55 (-17) and collected trophies and a TBCS swag package. Third place went to The Fore Horsemen, who won the scorecard playoff over Grip It and Sip It by shooting 56 (-16) to take 3rd place and received trophies and TBCS swag. When all was said and done, the event raised over $1,700 for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Tampa Bay.

The summer season of the Monday Night Men’s Basketball League at the Safety Harbor Rec Center is off and running with the MONSTARS undefeated with a 4-0-1 record. WHAT’S UP IN JULY? CITY OF LARGO Ramp Up Your Fitness at Highland Recreation Try out two new classes, Core Flexion and Band-Tastic, that are now available at the Highland Recreation Center in Largo. Core Flexion will tone and strengthen your upper and lower abdominal muscles, obliques and back. This class is held on Tuesdays from 7:45 to 8:30 p.m. Band-Tastic is a fun, full body workout using resistance bands. Participants will build muscle and tone their entire body. MilPro Publications Pinellas County Animal Welfare Organizations Partner to Reunite Lost Pets with Their Owners
Starting this July, people who find stray dogs and cats should transport the animal to Pinellas County Animal Services at 12450 Ulmerton Road in Largo. Owners who need to surrender a pet will be directed to SPCA Tampa Bay, located at 9099 130th Ave. N. in Largo. Previously, stray dogs or cats could be transported to a number of animal welfare agencies in Pinellas County, making it difficult for an owner to locate a lost pet. In 2013, a Return to Owner Task Force was formed to analyze the processes that address lost and stray pets. The number of stray animals taken to the county’s four largest animal welfare agencies has decreased by 21 percent over the past four years. However, the percentage of animals returned to their owners has only increased by 3 percent during the same time frame. The Task Force recommended changing to a centralized housing system and standardizing the information stored about lost pets to be more complete and accurate.

As Animal Services becomes the primary point for lost pets, SPCA Tampa Bay becomes the primary resource for pet owners who need to surrender their pets. Starting July 1, any pet owner in Pinellas County that needs to surrender their pet should make an appointment with SPCA Tampa Bay by calling (727) 586-3591. “In making changes, we wanted to support both owners who need to be reunited with their missing pet and owners who may no longer be able to care for their pet,” said Martha Boden, CEO of SPCA Tampa Bay. “These changes should have a positive impact on the animals in
Pinellas County and their owners.” Pinellas County Animal Services, SPCA Tampa Bay, Humane Society of Pinellas and Pet Pal Animal Shelter uniformly track information about the pets and wildlife in their care and work collaboratively to identify ways to make a positive impact on Pinellas County’s lost, homeless and unwanted pets. The 2016 Pinellas County Animal Report released on June 8th showed a countywide decrease in shelter intake, a drop in shelter euthanasia and an increase in the live release rate. The task force found that the previous process for stray animals was inefficient and confusing for people who were looking for their lost pet,” said Doug Brightwell, Pinellas County Animal Services bureau director. “Having one place to look for a lost pet will greatly reduce the stress pet owners experience when looking for their missing pet. We expect it to have a positive impact on the number of animals who are reunited with their owners.” People who find a stray dog or cat and have the ability to care for it are asked to notify Animal Services so it can place the pet’s information in its system for owners who are looking for their pet. Any stray dogs or cats found after Animal Services’ operating hours can be taken to one of its emergency clinic partners, which will accept and care for the animal until Animal Services can transport the animal to its facility. People who find injured stray pets that are not cats or dogs (such as pigs, rabbits or ferrets, and injured wildlife, including squirrels, owls and raccoons) should continue to take the animal to SPCA Tampa Bay for care. As a Guardian ad Litem, you advocate in court and in the child welfare system for abused, abandoned, or neglected children. The Guardian ad Litem visits the child every month, becomes familiar with the child’s case, and makes recommedations to the court to help ensure the child has a safe, caring, and stable home.
