past December, Saddle Up Riding Club found itself 90 days away from being homeless, unless they could raise $90,000 by March.

For the past six years, Saddle Up had leased seven acres of land in Pinellas Park for its operation, but in December, the property’s owner, Arianna Land LLC, was not willing to renew the lease. If the nonprofit organization wanted to stay, they would have come up with the financing to purchase the property, listed at a daunting $450,000. The club had also been using a six acre tract of land owned by Nancy Sparks, a neighbor to the east.

Sparks had been allowing the club to use her property free of charge.

Unable to come to terms on the existing land, Saddle Up relocated to the six acres it had been using for pasture, paddock boarding and shaded trail riding. The organization has spent the past six months looking for county property to purchase or lease to house their wonderful programs, but properties were either too expensive or had limitations of no kids, or kids but no adults and veterans.

Saddle Up thought its doors would have to close when Nancy Sparks suddenly offered her six acres to the

club on an extended lease, allowing them the opportunity to build their dream center!

Horses are majestic, almost mystical creatures, designed to work, ride,

race and compete... but for therapy?

Equine assisted therapy (therapy using the horse), hippo therapy and equine assisted activities have been around for many years, but the use of horses as a form of therapy for individuals with autism, Asperger’s, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy,

traumatic brain injuries, post traumatic stress disorder, multiple sclerosis, ADD, ADHD (... and the list continues) has gained notoriety and popularity in the past 10 years.

Saddle Up Riding Club is a therapeutic riding center, certified through P.A.T.H. International (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemen) and one of over 900 member centers nationwide offering services to disabled children, adults and veterans.

Now permanently located on the 6 acres in Pinellas Park with a long term lease, Saddle Up continues to offer riding and equine activities to both able and disabled children, adults and veterans.

With their future secured, the club’s exciting building projects, just dreams for the longest time, can finally become realities! Saddle Up Riding Club was founded

by Kellie Sipos, a homeschool mom of four girls. With a love for horses and teaching, Kellie simply wanted a place where children could learn safety, proper horsemanship and experience the love of horses at an affordable cost. According to Sipos, “Perseverance, team work, selfesteem and trust all come naturally when learning to care for and ride these beautiful animals!”

Participants in the riding club come from one to four times a month and participate in barn times or mini camps. The 3 hour sessions teach the children how to care for, feed, groom, clean, tack up and yes, ride horses, all in a group setting. The cost is simply $30, which is what a 30 minute private lesson would cost.

Clubbers have the opportunity to use Saddle Up’s horses to compete in

local horse shows and Saddle Up’s equine therapy participants compete in challenge shows and local and state Special Olympics equestrian sports.

Page 10 miniature horses, rabbits and you never know what else may be there that month. These fundraisers help the 501(c)(3) organization in support of their budget. Farm interactions give children and families a chance to experience a little bit of farm life in the middle of the city.

Saddle Up offers field trips to local public and private schools and groups at a reasonable fee and birthday parties on a limited basis.

A special horse science curriculum has been written by founder, Kellie Sipos which offers horse science classes to homeschool groups and schools through the Riding Club Science Club.

L.E.A.P. (Life Skills, Education, Agriculture and Progress) is Saddle Up’s newest program starting this fall. These classes are for mentally and physically challenged teens and young adults. Classes will be held Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm, following the school year calendar. Studies have shown there are not a lot of program options for this age group.

Programs like LEAP can help teach these individuals how to become productive members of society.

Participants will learn about farm life and small animal care, craft making, gardening, light cooking and small business, as they sell the items they make and grow.

Now that Saddle Up has secured the land, an “All Abilities Equestrian Center” is in the works which will be one of a kind in Pinellas County.

This facility will be accessible to anyone, regardless of ability or disability. Riders in wheelchairs and walkers will have access to

MilPro Publications every part of the facility, a covered arena is being built to allow riders to continue classes, no matter rain or shine, heat or cold. Saddle Up has had to cancel classes time and time again due to the whims of Mother Nature.

Cancellations are especially difficult on their riders with disabilities, because to some of them, this is what they look forward to all week.

Saddle Up now has another daunting challenge, raising $150,000 to build this unique facility for all of Pinellas County to enjoy. A site has been created on www.youcaring.com/ saddleupridingclub so you can learn more and possibly make a donation toward this endeavor. As a 501(c) (3) entity, all donations are tax deductible. A fundraiser is currently being held to purchase a lift system, allowing paralyzed veterans and other individuals to be transported from wheelchair to horse, a dream for the instructors at Saddle Up. WHAT’S UP IN JULY? Clearwater Community Sailing Summer Camps

This is a great opportunity for your child to learn a fun new skill or brush up on skills they already have.

Camps are designed for students of all levels. Students will learn basic water safety, sail theory, and get to practice their skills on several different types of sailboats in a safe, fun environment. Camp runs from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM MondayFriday. Camper should bring a lunch and dress for a day on the water!

Camps are for ages 7 – 18.

Little Puffs

Campers age 5-7 will be sailing with an instructor learning about the wind and the water. The main focus is to have fun and be safe.

There will be 2 sessions each day for Little Puffs: AM: 9-12 or PM 12-3 $150/Week for AM or PM Session $280/Week to attend both AM and PM camps

Pram Camp 1

Pram Camp 1 is for first time sailors ages 8-12 or up to 120lbs. This camp offers a basic level of sailing, focusing on the fundamentals while having a great time on the water. $260 members / $285 non-members

Pram II is a great camp available to sailors who have already completed Pram Camp 1 or who are ready to advance their skills. Pram II is

Water Adventure Camp

From 1945 through 1962, the club was the home of the PGA of America. During that time the club hosted 18 Senior Tour Championships, and this was the beginning of the Senior PGA Tour.

Dunedin Golf Club has a full-size driving range allowing you to use all of your clubs.

There are 20-25 hitting stations and a practice sand bunker. In addition to the driving range, Dunedin has a short-game practice area and a separate practice putting green.

LESSONS: Two PGA teaching professionals are available for lessons, at $35 per 1/2 hour and $60 for a full hour. Junior Group Lessons are held on Saturday mornings from 10am to 11am for $10 per person.

SUMMER JR GOLF CAMPS

Summer Camp will be conducted June 1619, July 7-10 and July 28-31, Monday to Thursday, 9am to Noon. Each session includes golf instruction, beverages and a daily lunch.

Shaw Sisters Dominant at AAU Track & Field Qualifier Sisters Johntavia and Johnnay Shaw

traveled to Jacksonville on June 24th to compete in the USATF Outdoor Qualifier. The top eight qualifiers move on to Rock Hill, SC on July 3-6.

At that meet, they will need to be in the top 5 for the USATF National Junior Olympics in Houston, TX at the end of the month. That probably won’t be a problem for ten year old Johntavia who set two world records in her age group at the Jacksonville event.

In the Discus event, she took first place, launching the discus 87.9 feet and set a new world record which was held by Finland (82.5 feet). She threw 32-0275 in the Shot Put event, also resetting the world record which was held by Germany (30-10 feet). Johntavia added to her medal haul by taking the gold in the Javelin event.

Eight year old Johnnay also was very impressive with two golds herself. She won the Shot Put event and Javelin

in the 8 and under Division. She is currently ranked number one in the country for the Shot Put. Along with the two gold medals, she received a bronze in the Long Jump.

Next up, they will be competing in the second round of qualifiers for AAU Track and Field. The top 5 will move on to Des Moines, IA. The sisters attend McMullen Booth Elementary School in Clearwater. Good luck!

FootGolf Comes to Largo Golf Course

Largo Recreation is excited to announce the arrival of FootGolf in Tampa Bay at the Largo Golf Course. FootGolf is a combination of soccer and golf that is played with a regulation soccer ball. The rules closely correspond to the rules of golf and it’s played on shortened holes with 21-inch diameter cups.

Players tee off from the regular tee boxes and aim to separate greens.

Since its introduction at the Largo Golf Course, the popularity of the sport has grown with youth soccer players and families alike.

With over 3,500 rounds (400 per month) played since October, the golf course has become a new entertainment destination for families from around the region.

The reason the sport is so popular is because not only is it fun, but it can be played by anyone who can kick a ball. In fact, it has become so popular, the course even has started offering summer camps, birthday parties and fundraising tournaments as new opportunities to play.

“It’s like the game of golf, only

played with a soccer ball,” said Jason Wilson, Golf Course Supervisor.

“It’s very exciting and being only the eighth certified FootGolf course in the nation, and only the second in Florida, it makes it that much more enjoyable to see all of the families... moms and dads, grandparents and kids.... all playing together.”

If you want to give it a try for

yourself, FootGolf at Largo Golf Course is offered seven days a week after 12:00 pm all summer long.

Players can walk or ride (with an adult) 9 or 18 holes over the 46 acre course located at 12500 Vonn Road in Largo. Junior and family discount rates are available throughout the year which makes it reasonable for

anyone to play!

“It’s a lot of fun to see all the kids and families on the course,” said Chip Potts, golf course manager.

“FootGolf has definitely brought a lot more energy to our course, which we all enjoy!”

Outside of the opportunity to play FootGolf individually or as a group, FootGolf S u m m e r are Camps also available during the weeks of July 7-11 and July 28-August 1 with the cost being only $60/week, and includes swimming at the Southwest Pool.

Soccer balls are available free of charge but players are encouraged to bring their own soccer balls as supplies are sometimes limited. No other equipment is needed, however, cleats are not allowed as only sneakers or turf shoes are permitted.
