WEEKEND WARRIOR RESOLUTIONS
OK
, it’s now 2016 so time for some reflection on the importance of my weekend warrior extracurricular activities, and how they play havoc with my life. A quick perusal of my health insurance claims page tells me I am getting my money’s worth for my over priced medical insurance premiums. So maybe it’s time to make some Weekend Warrior 2016 New Year Resolutions.
Hopefully my new General Practitioner will have attended a less ridged institution of higher learning. So, my second New Year’s Resolution is to find a General Practitioner who agrees with me and maybe has a financial interest in
I must concede one point. I cannot justify buying a new nine iron every time I miss the green and toss the club into the water hazard. So my fourth New Year’s resolution is to not toss my nine iron into a water hazard. That should be doable as long as I don’t miss the green on an easy approach shot. So how do I keep the resolution if I miss the green? I can always wrap that nine iron around a tree trunk.
It appears that I am also helping the economy as my Orthopedic will certainly show a profit on his balance sheet thanks to my weekend warrior adventures. His large fees for telling me not to fall on my head was money well spend. So my first New Years resolution is to not fall on my head! I had a bit of a negative impact on my General Practitioner’s earnings because she was replaced in 2015. We had philosophical differences in a vast array of medical disciplines. She wanted me to stay out of the water and not surf for three weeks due to a minor muscle tear in my forearm. I felt two days and a Prednisone pack would be adequate. She disagreed, imagine her arrogance! Just because she went to medical school she assumed she knew more about rehabbing an injury than I did. She also wanted me to cut down on steak and ice cream. Cut down on steak and ice cream, really? What are they teaching doctors these days!

N o w, I h a v e b e e n a c c u s e d o f lacking, what’s the word... I think it begins with an M... oh yeah, MODERATION. I have been accused of lacking moderation when it comes to sports. Just because I go surfing for eight hours or play 36 holes of golf in a single day. My wife calls it magnificent obsession. I kinda like that. It sounds, well, magnificent. Though she is not smiling when she says it. See broken gate, ice packs and Dexter. a steak house or an ice cream parlor. On the home front, my softball escapades have rendered my wife’s honey-do list ineffective. She does not seem to agree that legging out a three bagger with bad knees is worth

TAMPA BAY PATRIOTS 2016 SEASON COACHING STAFF PREVIEW The Tampa Bay Patriots open the eighth season of the Florida Football Alliance on Saturday, January 23rd on the road against the Jacksonville X Men. Jacksonville finished the 2015 season with a 2-8 record but have a revamped offensive. Tampa Bay’s home opener will be February 6th. They will take on the defending league champion, Southwest Florida Gladiators. The Patriots play home games at PAL Field located at 1924 W Diana Street in Tampa. The players score the touchdowns and make the big plays. But before the first snap of the game, many hours are spent behind the scenes by the coaching staff doing player evaluations and preparing game plans.

In the Monday Night Men’s Basketball League at the Safety Harbor Rec Center, the Delta Air Squad took on the MONSTARS in the championship game. Both teams finished the regular season with identical 6-1 records, with each team beating the other once. The Delta Air Squad earned the number one seed and a bye in the first round. Michael Dorceus scored 46 points as BongoUS knocked off Block to the System 78-68 to open the tournament and earn the dubious honor of facing the Air Squad in the semi finals. Delta Air Squad held Dorceus, the leagues scoring leader, to a season low 19 points and cruised to a 111-75 victory and a spot in the finals. The MONSTARS, missing league scoring runner up David Pisarcik, got 18 points each from Michael Portesy and Luc Rivera to out last the Blue Devils 51-46 in the semi finals. In the Thursday Night Coed Kickball League at the Eddie C Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, the Fall League champion, the Pro Marine/Hooters team are again undefeated with a 4-0 record in the Fall 2 season and looking for back-to-back titles. KBK’s Team will match up with Pro Marine/Hooters in the regular season finale on February 6th, with a possible showdown of undefeated teams.

The Tuesday Night Coed Softball League at the Eddie C Moore Softball
Complex crowned a champion. The Amish Outlaws beat the Village Idiots 22-18 in the quarter finals, setting up the semi final match with Team 2.0. Team 2.0, who earned top seed and a first round bye, pounded the Outlaws 16-6 in the quarter finals. In the other quarter final match, the Mellow Mushrooms beat Norton’s Southside to advance to the semi finals and a game with the two seed Menace to Sobriety. Apparently, Menace trumps Mellow as they held off the Mushrooms 16-14 to advance to the finals. In the championship game all the drama was quickly dispelled as the bats of Team 2.0 erupted for 14 runs en route to a 14-3 victory

CHARGERS LEND A HELPING HAND Clearwater...
Two Clearwater Chargers boys teams got together to brighten up some unfortunate families lives this holiday season. The Under 13 and Under 15 boys teams collected toiletries and clothing and hauled it to Pinellas Hope on Friday, December 11, 2015. While there, the boys and their families sang Christmas Carols to entertain the residents while they enjoyed their dinner. They also toured the facility and learned about Pinellas Hope and how their donations will help the residents there. Pinellas Hope currently has 250 homeless residents living in tents. It was a very successful charity project by these two teams. Pinellas Hope is a program of Catholic Charities, serving with charity and compassion to promote the sanctity and dignity of all people.

The tumbling aspect (floor routines) is also incorporated in gymnastics programs and many competitive cheerleaders are also accomplished gymnasts. Unlike gymnastics, the tumbling aspect in done in a group, as opposed to individually.
Every four years, you’ve watched
them on TV, the gymnasts who perform gravity defying movements, high above the crowd, or who land just inches from the end of the mat during floor routines. Our minds and hearts were captured by the 2012 Olympic Girls Gymnastics team, otherwise known as the “Fab Five,” Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ros, not to mention Nadia Comaneci, Shannon Miller, Mary Lou Retton, Paul Hamm, Chellsie Memmel and Carly Patterson, among many others. According to industry experts, gyms see an average 20% boost to enrollment during an Olympic year, as thousands of young kids (mostly girls) set out to emulate their new found heroes. That’s good news for our local gyms since 2016 is another Olympic year! The numbers drop off as the year goes on and the sport recedes from the spot light as the reality of hard work sets in.

are two tracks to follow. Either you are on the development track, heading for state, regional and national competition or you are on the non-competitive track where you practice the sport and participate in house tournaments.
They start as young as three years of age, hopefully beginning a path that will take them to become one of the elite few who compete at the Olympic level. The chances? Well, let the numbers speak for themselves. There are approximately 110 gymnastics clubs in Florida with 300-500 members in each club. At 500 kids times 110 clubs, there are over fifty thousand potential gymnasts! But there are just a hand full of elite gymnasts in all of Florida.
All the gymnasts from Level One to Elite compete under the United States Gymnastics Association (USGA). The USGA is the track to the Olympics. The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) offers competitive tournaments with four divisions per level, giving more gymnasts a chance to compete and earn awards. The YMCA and other local rec organizations have programs as well, but the sport in Florida is dominated by private clubs.

The 13,000 sf gym is well equipped for the girls and boys to train on the balance beam, bars, floor and vault. Boys of age 5+ are trained by Oldsmar Boys Gymnastics, located within Victory’s gym. Students of every skill level are welcome at Victory Gymnastics Training Center, and are challenged to push themselves, receiving guidance from experienced coaches. Dedication, desire, courage, respect and a serious work ethic are some of the traits the coaching staff wishes to instill in its young gymnasts. And we do mean young! Children can start learning as early as 18 months old in the “Parent and Me” class. From toddlers who are just learning to tumble, to those who aspire to win championships, Victory Gymnastics Training Center offers training for USAG Girls’ Competitive Gymnastics Program, Girls’ Recreational Gymnastics and Tumbling. Private lessons are available, as well. Adjacent to the reception area is a Pro Shop, stocked with essentials like hand tape and snazzy leotards, and plenty of snacks and drinks. A Birthday Party Room is brightly decorated

Head Coach Viktor Savitski is a former Elite gymnast from Ukraine and National Team Member with a Masters Degree in Physical Education. During the past 30 years, he has coached an Olympic Bronze Medalist, Wendy Bruce, Olympians Morgan White and Mohini Bhardwej, and National Champion Ashley Shible. Many of his gymnasts have been awarded full college scholarships. Perhaps the best testimonies are Viktor’s former students, who are now bringing their own children to Victory
Gymnastics Training Center. “Viktor did such a good job then and still does; he’s always been such a good coach,” says Jessica, who trained under Viktor and now brings her seven-year-old and four-year-old to Victory Gymnastics Training Center, where she knows they will thrive. Instructors are USAG Safety Certified, background checked, and those coaching at competitive levels, have completed specialized training as part of the criteria necessary to coach at the competitive level. In addition to gymnastics and tumbling classes for all skill levels, Victory Gymnastics Training Center also offers a variety of seasonal camps: Spring, Summer, Thanksgiving and Winter, Birthday Parties, Open Gym times and Gym Rentals. You can sign your child up for a FREE TRIAL CLASS, or if you have a toddler, try the “Parent and Me” class as a great way to bond with your child and help them to dig from the “Educational Treasure Chest of Gold” at Victory Gymnastics Training Center.
