And, if you don’t know how to do any of the above, well, you can learn, because there is a multitude of instructional classes available. Don’t know where to go? Well, we’re gonna tell ya! We’re even gonna tell ya what kind of equipment you need and where to find it.

But a lot of us who live here year round don’t truly take advantage of all that Florida and specifically, Pinellas County, has to offer. For Twelve year old Jacob Taliaferro of Clearwater those of you Community Sailing Center taking control. who have f o rg o t t e n , we have w a t e r everywhere and we can do much more than just get wet in it. We can surf, skim, sail, kayak, windsurf, kite board, p a d d l e board and canoe. And that’s just on top of the water. We can go below and snorkel or go real deep and scuba dive. Of course, we can swim. We can swim for fun or fitness and we can swim competitively and we can do it in a variety of places. We can swim in the gulf and in the lakes. We can also swim in pools both indoor and outdoor, pretty much whenever we want to.

After all, this is the 2015 Youth Sports News Watersports Issue, so let’s get started!

BOARD SPORTS What’s a board sport? Simply put, anything that involves a board, a body and some form of natural

propulsion like wind or waves, is a board sport.

SURFING The most well known, and oldest of all the board sports is surfing. In fact, it was 1779 when James King, recorded the first written description of Hawaiian surfing. But by 1890, because missionaries b e l i e v e d surfing was “hedonistic,” surfing in Hawaii was nearly extinct. It wasn’t until 1905, when a teenager, Duke Kahanamoku, who became known as the “Big Kahuna,” and some friends, later known as the “Beach Boys of Waikiki,” started the rebirth of surfing in Hawaii. A few years later, surfing was introduced to the United States mainland. In the 1950’s, the attraction of the north shore’s swells had brought on a migration of surfers from California in search of the ultimate ride down some of the world’s biggest waves.

GABBY BELLAMY Sixteen year old swimmer, Gabby Bellamy, who swims with the Countryside Country Club Dolphins Aquatic team, is also a Black Belt in Karate.

MilPro Publications In 1966, Bruce Brown produced his epic surfing documentary, “The Endless Summer,” which, along with the movie, “Gidget,” ignited the surf craze of the 60’s and 70’s. Today, some estimate that there are 25 million surfers worldwide. Surfing is big business with sponsorships and the World Championship Tour (WCT). In 2004, Stacy Peralta, a famous skater/surfer directed and narrated the epic big wave surfing tale, “Riding Giants.” The movie traces the origins of surfing and specifically focuses on the art of big wave riding.

Born in Tampa, the 5’ 3,” 115 pounder is a sophomore at Countryside High School where she lists her favorite subject as math. Gabby’s favorite movie is Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Dexter tops her list of favorite TV shows. Her number one restaurant is BJ’s. When not swimming, Gabby enjoys golf, coaching and working as a lifeguard. Her favorite sports team is the Tampa Bay Rays and Wil Myers is her top rated player. When asked the question, “What is the biggest problem in society today?” Gabby’s response was, “Not taking time to enjoy the little things in life that makes it special.” Gabby’s future plans include earning a degree in sports medicine.

Now, west Florida isn’t exactly an epic surf spot. In fact, many people who live here comment, “You surf here? Really? I didn’t think we had any waves...” But, yes we do get waves! In fact, Pinellas County gets about 100 days of surf during the course of the year. In the winter, the cold fronts that send most Floridians fleeing to find warm clothes and cover the bushes, signal the surfer it’s time to put on the rubber and head to the beach. While most of us are putting up hurricane shutters in the summer and fall, surfers are tracking the hurricane swell to find the best break to surf. Why do we have surf? Well, because the Gulf of Mexico has wind and water. Wind is what makes waves. Confused? A storm creates wind and the wind blows onto the water. The area of this interaction is called the fetch. The longer the wind blows over this area, the bigger the created swell. Eventually, either the storm dies or the wave speed exceeds the

forward speed of the storm, and these seas ‘escape’ into relatively calm waters. The water doesn’t actually move, but the created energy does. This swell moves towards the shore in sets of waves. As it reaches the shore, going from deep water to shallow water, the wave rises up and begins to break. This is where the surfer catches the wave and rides it to the beach. Of course, we won’t be riding many “giants” here on the west coast, but if there were a movie called “Riding Midgets,” the west coast of Florida is home to a board sport that fits the title.

SKIMBOARDING So, what exactly is skimboarding? Skimboarding is a close relative of surfing with one major difference. The skimmer begins on the beach (as opposed to the surfer who starts out in the water beyond the break and rides the wave into the beach) and stands about twenty feet from the water and waits for a wave. When a wave comes in, the skimmer runs towards it, tosses the board into the wet sand and jumps onto it as quickly as possible. Once on the board, the skimmer rides the skim out into the water toward the oncoming wave, banks off it, and rides it back into shore. There is a close relationship to the dry land x-treme sport of skateboarding. Many of the names of tricks that are done by the skimboarders were originated in the skateboarding world and many skimmers are also skateboarders.

WINDSURFING Windsurfing, or sailboarding, is a surface water sport using a windsurf board, also commonly called a sailboard, usually 2 to 5 meters long and powered by wind pushing a sail. The rig is connected to the board by a free-rotating flexible universal joint (U-Joint). Unlike a rudder-steered sailboat, a windsurfer is steered by the tilting and rotating of the mast and sail as well as tilting and carving the board. The sport combines aspects of both sailing and surfing, along with certain athletic aspects shared with other board sports like skateboarding, snowboarding, waterskiing, and wakeboarding. The boom of the 1980’s led windsurfing to be recognized as an Olympic sport in 1984. However, windsurfing’s popularity saw a sharp decline in the mid-1990s, as equipment became more specialized, requiring more expertise to sail. Now the sport is experiencing a modest revival, as new beginner-friendly designs are becoming available

STAND-UP

PADDLEBOARDING Stand-up paddleboarding or SUP, like surfing, is derived from it’s Polynesian roots. The Hawaiian translation KU HOE HE’E NALU: to stand, to paddle, to surf a wave. It’s the world’s fastest growing water sport. However, it’s certainly not new. Man has been riding for hundreds of years. It really came to notice in the 1950’s and really took off in the 1990’s when big name Hawaiian surfers took to the sport.

WHERE DO U DO IT? OK, so now you have a board. It’s all waxed up and you’re ready to go, but where do you go? In Pinellas County the answer to that question is simply two words, Gulf Boulevard. The twenty mile stretch actually starts at Clearwater Beach, where you can get rides at a couple of spots, but the area is crowded and tourist heavy. Continue south and cross the

bridge to Sand Key County Park. Sand Key is the first stop and has plenty of metered parking. It’s a short walk down to the water and the park has bathroom and shower facilities. During the summer, the lifeguards will restrict you to a 100 yard section just off the jetty, but after Labor Day, the lifeguards are gone and the entire beach is up for grabs. Keep driving south along Gulf and you will pass Belleair Beach which is mostly residential and has limited beach access. But have no fear! Just a mile or so down the road you will arrive at Indian Rocks Beach. For skimmers, surfers, SUPers and kite boarders alike, Indian Rocks Beach (IRB)... Rocks! Beach access is abundant and free. Just look to your right as you drive south and you will see beach access signs at most avenues. Start at the north end around 28th Avenue. Pull into almost any avenue and you’ll find parking and in a few steps, you’ll be on the beach. For cyberspace info on skimming and surfing in west Florida go to www.gulfster.com.

KITEBOARDING Kitesurfing or kiteboarding is a surface water sport that uses wind power to pull a rider through the water on a small surfboard or a kiteboard. The Chinese are credited with using kites for propulsion in the 13th century. In 2013, the number of kitesurfers had been estimated at around 150,000 to 210,000, with 114,465 inflatable kites sold that

Twelve year old sailor, Jacob Merritt Taliaferro, who sails at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center in Sand Key, was born with a single ventricle and has overcome three heart surgeries to excel in sailing.

SAILING Although sailing as a means of transportation predates history, sport sailing,or yachting, seems to have originated in the 17th century in Holland. From there it was introduced into England somewhere around 1660 by Charles II, and eventually spread to the American colonies. Then, as now, it was common for sport sailors to join together for social and recreational purposes in groups known as yacht clubs. The world’s first such club was founded in 1720 at Cork, Ireland.

The oldest continuously existing club in the United States is the New York Yacht Club which was founded in 1844. In 1851, members of the NYYC raced the schooner America against British competitors around England’s Isle of Wight. Victorious, they deeded their trophy to the NYYC. It became known as the America’s Cup, giving it’s name to the oldest and most prestigious event in international sailboat racing. Of course, navigating your sunfish through the treacherous waters of Clearwater on a calm sunny day, can’t quite compare to winning the America’a Cup, but one has to start somewhere, right?

YOUTH SAIL BOAT TYPES The Sunfish dinghy is a popular one-design sailing dinghy which can be sailed with one, two, or three persons, but is most often sailed by one person.

The Laser is a popular one-design class of small sailing dinghy. According the Laser Class Rules the boat may be sailed by either one or two people, though it is rarely sailed by two. The Laser is one of the most popular single-handed dinghies in the world. The 420 Class dinghy is a monohull planing dinghy with centreboard, bermuda rig and centre sheeting. It is designed for a crew of two. A Catamaran is a type of multihulled boat consisting of two hulls, joined by some structure. The most common sailboat is the Sloop which features one mast and two sails, a normal mainsail and a foresail. This simple configuration is very efficient for sailing towards the wind. ones out sailing. Room Rentals: The Carlisle Room and Veranda is a beautiful venue to hold your special event. Think of them next time you need a place nearby to hold a function. The facility is the proud home to the following clubs and organizations. These programs help to achieve the goal of providing a safe and fun experience on the water for everyone. Kai Aniani: An outrigger canoe club. They practice every Wednesday and Sunday. They have a large fleet of stand-up paddle boards available to their members, which can also be rented by visitors – they also offer group and individual classes. North Beach Windsurfing: North Beach Windsurfing provides lessons and rentals. They also have a successful youth racing team, with several members on the US Sailing Youth Development Team each year. Sailability Greater Tampa Bay: This program affords accessible sailing activities and education to persons of all abilities, young and old. SailFit: Where sailing and fitness

are one. Sailfit offers both Laser coaching, private lessons, and physical & nutritional training for all levels. Team FOR: Team FOR, or Florida Oceanic Racing, is a private Opti Sailing team, home to some of the best youth sailors in the country. It’s never too early to start thinking about Spring Break and what better way to spend it than on the water? Spring Break Camp times are from 9am to 3pm, Monday-Friday. All experience levels are welcome, ages 5-17. At the end of the week new sailors will be able to demonstrate rigging, seamanship, and basic sailing skills. Students will also have an understanding of basic nomenclature and knot tying. While building confidence on the water, there is a strong emphasis on teamwork, water safety skills, respect towards other students and the environment. $275 for the week. This year’s Summer Camp program begins on June 8th and has a great line-up of camps that can cater to every age and need: Little Puffs: Campers ages 5-7 will be sailing with an instructor learning about the wind and the water. The

main focus is to have fun and be safe. There will be two sessions a day for Little Puffs: AM: 9-12 or PM 12-3pm. $150/week for AM or PM session. Pram Camp One: This camp is for first time sailors ages 8-12 or up to 120lbs. Pram I sailing camp offers a basic level of sailing focusing on the fundamentals while having a great time on the water. $260-CCSC Members, $285-Non members. Pram Camp Two: Pram II is a great camp available to sailors who have already completed Pram I or who are ready to advance their skills. Pram II is for sailors 8-12 or up to 120 lbs. $260-CCSC Members, $285-Non members. 420 Camp: This camp is for 1217 year olds. 420s are two person boats that are great for beginners and experienced sailors alike. Must be over 80 lbs. $260-CCSC Members, $285-Non members. Windsurfing: This is a more physical sport and requires balancing on the board while sailing at the same time. Campers should be at least 10 years old. All experience levels are welcome. Must be over 70 lbs. $260-CCSC Members, $285-Non members.

Born in Clearwater, the 5’ 2,” 98 pounder is a fifth grader at Ridgecrest Elementary School where she lists her favorite subject as reading. Berlyn’s favorite TV show is Pretty Little Liars and Dean and Sam Winchester top her list of favorite TV characters.. When not swimming, Berlyn enjoys Girlfriends Club, SAVE Club, Student Council and the school newspaper. Her favorite sports team is the Tampa Bay Rays and Evan Longoria is her top rated player. When asked the question, “What is the biggest problem in society today?” Berlyn’s response was, “People judging each other.” Berlyn’s future plans include swimming on the 2020 USA Olympic team.

The Eckerd College Waterfront Program offers a wide range of instruction for members of the Eckerd community as well as participants from the general public. Sailing (beginning to advanced levels) and boardsailing classes are offered during the academic year. During the summer, their extremely popular Summer Watersports Camp is held for children starting at 6 years old up to teens. Classes include sailing, windsurding, kayaking, fishing, exploring marine life, wakeboarding and much more!

SWIMMING Swimming competition dates way back. Although swimming was not included in the ancient Olympic games, the Greeks practiced the sport, holding it in high regard, as they did all athletic endeavors. In fact, one of the most biting insults one Greek could unleash on another was to describe him as a man who, “...neither knew how to run or

swim.” Plato considered a man who didn’t know how to swim uneducated. Both Julius Caesar and Charlemagne were known as great swimmers and Louis XI frequently took swims in the Seine River. Today, a Pinellas County swimmer’s path to the Olympics starts with USA Swimming. The USS is the national governing body for competitive swimming in the United States. Unlike many other sports, qualifying is based on beating the clock, not another swimmer. Throughout the year, swimmers compete in meets with their age groups and at the end of the year, the top 16 are announced in each age group. Swimmers age 19 and under who make the Olympic qualifying times, can compete at the Junior Championships. At the Junior Nationals, age groups are not considered and it’s all about how fast you can go. Younger swimmers can stay in their age groups and compete in the AAU Junior Olympics. Pinellas County offers swimmers of all ages and skill levels many options. Pinellas County swim clubs are a good way to get started:

CAT strives to provide excellence on deck so members can excel within and beyond the confines of the pool. CAT offers Age Group, Senior, High School and Masters programs. CAT’s goal is to offer all people in the community a program that meets their individual goals and needs. Practices are held at the Doyle Center for Aquatics at the Long Center. The team hosts several club meets which draws teams from all over the state, country and world. They also hold several State and National Championships throughout the year. Head Coach: Susan Curnutte has been the Head Coach for Countryside since 1986. She is also the Assistant Coach for the Countryside High School Swim Team. She was born in Kansas and raised in Oklahoma. She comes from a family of swimmers. Susan swam at the Phillips 66 Splash Club in Oklahoma from age 12 through high school and also 3 year lettered in basketball and slow-pitch softball. She was an Oklahoma State Collegiate Swimmer for three years. Her five brothers also swam, two swam in college on full scholarships. She graduated from Oklahoma State with a major in Physical Education/ Recreation Education and minor in Biology. Susan has lived in Florida since 1980. She is currently teaching Marine Biology at Countryside High School and has been since 1983. Her coaching experience includes Head Coach for Tarpon Lake Village Swim Team (which is now Lansbrook), and Head Boys and Girls Swim Team Coach at Countryside High School. Program: The Countryside Country Club Aquatics Dolphins swim team is designed to foster and enhance swimming skills, competitive skills, physical fitness, sportsmanship, team spirit, cooperation and most of all FUN!!! A summer swim team for boys and girls ages 5 to 18, they compete in both the PCL or Private

Club League and the PAL or Pinellas Aquatic League in the Tampa Bay Area. Registration is open starting in March. History: The West Florida Lightning Aquatics (WFLA) club is a USS (United States Swimming) year round competitive swim team offering high quality professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities. The goal of the team is to provide every member an opportunity to improve swimming skills and achieve success at his or her level of ability, from novice to international competitor. The team has been in existence for more than 30 years, enjoying great success at all ability levels from Learn To Swim to Age Group, High School, College and even Olympic Gold! Their coaches, as members of the American Swim Coaches Association, and United States Swiming, have access to the most comprehensive training and certification programs for youth coaches of any sport in the United States. They provide assurances that the time children spend in swimming will be quality time. WFLA is a non-profit club. It is constantly growing and training

Summer Swim Team: This program is offered during the summer and focuses on learning the four legal competitive strokes and having fun. Swimmers will be able to participate in several fun summer team swim meets throughout the summer. Swim America Swim Lessons: These are learn to swim lessons for ages 3 and up, utilizing the highly successful Swim America swim teaching program created by the American Swim Coaches Association. WFLA is proud to be the only Swim America program in Pinellas County. Lessons are

designed to go at a swimmer’s own pace, and are geared towards developing skills that will not only teach your children to be water safe, but to have the skills necessary to swim competitively should they choose to. Every child will receive a certificate of achievement at the conclusion of their lessons. Silver I Group: This is an entry level group that is offered all year long. An athlete need only to be able to swim a length of the pool to enter this group. MilPro Publications Group, athletes move into the Junior Group. Athletes are usually at least 10 years old and have completed the Silver Group move-up skills list. This group consists of 7 workouts offered each week with dryland training 6 times per week. Competing at swim meets is highly encouraged at a rate of about once per month. Graduates of the WFLA Swim America Program are offered a free month trial of the WFLA year round swim team, should they choose to move on. National Team: Typically for high school age athletes, swimmers entering the National Team must display a strong desire to perform at the highest level of which they are capable. Training is geared toward individual talents, although a strong aerobic endurance factor is present. Athletes in the National Team have goals that include competing on the National level and/or preparing to swim collegiately. High School Conditioning: This program is for the high school seasonal athlete who wishes to stay conditioned between high school swimming seasons. Summer League Swim Team: A 9 week summer league program that is a fun, low key introduction to competitive swimming. The team practices morning OR evening at both Southwest Rec and the Seminole High School pool. There are 4 fun, low competitive mini meets throughout the 9 weeks. Masters: For adult swimmers who wish to swim for fitness, competition, triathalon training,

Seal Swim School was founded by Therese Cullen Seal in 1980, operating a home-based swim program in Tampa, that taught thousands of children to swim. In 1993, the school expanded by opening two swim schools located at Total Fitness Center in Tarpon Springs and the other was operated out of a pool connected to a daycare center in Tampa. The Lutz location was established in 2000, and the brand new state of the art facility in Lutz was completed in June of 2005. The South Tampa location was opened in March of 2006. Seal Swim School’s goal is to produce safer, skilled and happy swimmers while building selfesteem and a love for the water.

SCUBA DIVING Scuba diving is swimming underwater while using a scuba set. By carrying a source of breathing gas (usually compressed

The scuba diver typically swims underwater by using fins attached to the feet. Scuba today typically refers to the in-line opencircuit equipment, developed by Emile Gagnan and Jacques-Yves Cousteau, in which compressed gas (usually air) is inhaled from a tank and then exhaled into the water.
