November 21st at Tarpon Springs High School, the Suncoast Youth Football Conference began play-offs, leading to the crowning of the 2015 Super Bowl Champions. The Pinellas Park Thunderbirds, making a case for being the dominant football organization in Pinellas County, had three teams in the four varsity championship games, winning one varsity title. In the Mighty Mites Division, all paths pointed to a showdown at the end between the Pinellas Park Thunderbirds and the St. Pete ‘Lil Devils. Both teams had dominated the rest of the division all season long and it was St. Pete who had hopes to play the role of spoiler. They came into the playoffs with a 10-1 record, having a first round bye. Their only loss came way back in week one and by just six points to the number one seed, and undefeated Thunderbirds. They would have to get past the winner of the Lakewood Spartans vs. the Clearwater Tornadoes and hope that the Thunderbirds could beat the
winner of the Seminole Chiefs vs. the Countryside Cougars, to set up the payback moment. The Chiefs, 8-3 during the regular season, dominated the Cougars (6-4) 30-zip in the first quarter final game. The Spartans came in at 8-2-1 and outlasted the Cougars and their 6-41 record for a nail bitting 7-0 victory to set up the semi-final match ups.
In the semi-finals, the Thunderbirds’ high powered offense scored first and never looked back, cruising to a 20-6 victory over Seminole. St Pete knocked off Lakewood in the other semi-final to set up the long anticipated rematch with the Thunderbirds. Sadly for the Devils,
there would be no Christmas miracle as the Thunderbirds played the role of Scrooge, ending St. Pete’s hopes and season with a solid 15-7 victory, capping off an undefeated season with the SYFC Championship. In the Varsity Pee Wee Division, the Thunderbirds were a bit under the radar as they finished the regular season in third place with a very solid 9-2 record. The Countryside Cougars had just one loss, falling to the undefeated Lakewood Spartans 13-0 in week five. Again, the playoff format saw a clear path for an undefeated team and one with a lone loss, to meet up for all the marbles in the Super Bowl. This time, the Cougars and Spartans would be those two teams, or would they? Pinellas Park would have something to say about that. After the Thunderbirds dispatched the six seed St. Pete ‘Lil Devils 20-6 in the first quarter final game, they found themselves squaring off with the Cougars in the semi-finals. into submission, 24-6 for the dubious honor of facing the Spartans in the other semi-final. Playing the 2pm game, the Spartans made short work of Clearwater and the team gathered in the stands to watch the next semi-final between the T-Birds and the Cougars. Very quickly it
was made clear no rematch would be happening as the Park pulled the Cougars’ teeth, dominating from start to finish in a 24-0 beat down to set up the finals with the Spartans. Once again, no Christmas miracle, as another undefeated team marched on for an easy 21-zip victory and the

The Dunedin Falcons’ only team to make it into the post season were their vaunted Midget team and they proved their worth by shutting out the Lakewood Spartans 14-0 in the other quarter final.
In the semi-finals, Pinellas Park would take on Countryside in the first game and the favored Cougars may have been looking ahead to that rematch with St. Pete. It would come down to an extra point, one that the Park nailed and one that the Cougars missed, as the Thunderbirds upset the number two seed Cougars 7-6 to earn a spot in the title game. The Falcons would run head into a brick wall as the ‘Lil Devils marched to the championship game.

With the kids done playing and the college and professional leagues coming to a close after the holiday season, Tampa Bay football fans will have to rely on backyard pickup games and reruns on the NFL network... or will they? Football is alive and well in the area well after the Super Bowls championships have left Disneyland. The Florida Football Alliance (FFA) will begin its ninth season at the end of January. The FFA was established in 2007 and is dedicated to the promotion and advancement of adult, amateur American football at the minor league level. Teams have roster players that consist primarily of unpaid, “collegeeligible” young men who use the league as a means to reach their college or professional dreams. The league is made up of 15 teams from

The Tampa Bay area team is the Tampa Bay Patriots. The Patriots play home games at PAL Field located at 1924 W. Diana Street in Tampa. Last season, playing in the NFC Central Division, the Pats finished the regular season with a 7-2 record, but lost in the first round of the play-offs 23-21 to the South West Florida Gladiators, the eventual league champions. THUNDER COMES UP SHORT AT FALL CLASSIC
The Tampa Bay Thunder, coming off their championship season in the Florida Baseball League, took on 12 teams from as far away as St. Louis and Dallas at the Men’s Senior Baseball League (MSBL) Fall Classic held at Brighthouse Field in Clearwater.
The Thunder opened the tournament by edging out the Miami Dade Marlins 6-5. Jeff Bloomer pitched eight strong innings before giving way to the University of Tampa’s product Dan Zlotnick with the game knotted in the eighth. Zlotnick earned
the win as the Thunder scored the game winner in walk off fashion in the bottom of the 9th.
Up next, the Thunder squared off with two time defending World Series champions, the Georgia Cherokees. The Thunder sent hard throwing Justin Mauldin to the hill and he dominated from start to finish, tossing a complete game as Tampa routed the Cherokees 9-1. The Thunder continued to dominate their group with wins over the Long Island Tide, South Jersey Elite,
and Jacksonville Indians to win the pool with a perfect 5-0 record. The Thunder knocked off their old FSL rival Team USA to advance to the championship game against the Georgia Barons. Tampa handed the ball to Vinny Lally with the championship on the line. Lally led the team, and the National League in batting, with a .525 average during the FSL regular season and now would be asked to use his arm to secure another championship trophy for his team.

The Barons countered by sending their ace fireballer, Nathan Moneau to the bump. Both hurlers stymied the opposing batters, sending each line-up down in order in the first. Lally held the Barons hitless until Alex Delgado’s one-out single in the fourth. Both pitchers were on cruise control through four scoreless innings as they waited to see who would blink first. Unfortunately for the Thunder, it would be Lally who blinked first as the Georgia bats reached him for a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Dre Waldburg crushed a two-out, two-run double to left-center that broke the scoreless tie. Moneau kept his foot on the gas, mowing down the Tampa hitters in the bottom half of the inning until he winched after throwing a heater. This red flag sent Baron manager Jason Tolhurst scurrying to the mound in a panic. Bad news, Moneau had strained a tricep muscle and would have to exit the game. Tolhurst’s call to the bullpen brought in Pete Martinez to hold onto the lead. The Barons touched Lally for two more runs in the top of the sixth as Ben Grillo and Cory Willig rapped run scoring singles. Martinez tossed a perfect bottom of the sixth and time was beginning to run out for the Thunder, down by four. Dan Zlotnick relieved Lally in the top of the seventh and held the game in check. The Thunder lumber finally made an appearance in the top of the seventh. With one away, Bobby Eveld drilled a two bagger to left and Justin
Mauldin reached on a two-out error to keep the inning alive. Up next, Shane Casey drove a fastball into the gap in right center that sent Eveld and Mauldin scampering home to cut the lead in half. With the tying run at the dish, Martinez dug in and induced a lazy pop-out to end the inning. The Barons scored three in the top of the ninth to take a 7-3 lead and blow the game open. The Thunder refused to go quietly into the night as William Martin crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth. But that would be all she wrote as the Thunder ended up on the short end of the
contest 7-3. Nathan Moneau earned the win with 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Vinny Lally took the loss and Pete Martinez picked up the save. The Barons’ Dre Waldburg knocked in four runs and was the championship game MVP.

October has come and gone and the Yankees made another failed attempt at a 28th world championship banner. There were a lot of games to watch on the tube and it’s great to watch them all, but it creates an itch! It’s creates an itch that only donning a pair of cleats and digging into the batter’s box can scratch. So, on a sunny Saturday afternoon, I took my old bones down to the softball diamond to play a little weekend warrior softball with younger guys that are all out of shape. My head tells me that I am in good shape and despite my age, can still run with the young bucks. However, my body has a slightly different opinion and therein lies the rub!
Page 17 Hitting a softball that some fat guy hurls at you at a blazing speed somewhere around 18 miles an hour, should be easy enough. Well, the first couple of swings would seem to contradict that statement. After flailing away at a couple of slow moving pitches, the barrel of my bat accidentally crashes into the ball, sending it screaming down the third base line. I come flying out of the batter’s box and am really moving (in my own mind), I round first while some middle aged accountant jogs after the ball in left field. As I approach second, I realize that a triple is within reach! I make the turn at second and stare down the accountant in left, challenging his gun against my wheels and dash for the bag as the accountant uncorks a rocket towards third. As I arrive, so does the ball and I slide under the tag... Safe! is the call. The old guy legged out a three bagger! The next morning I awake with great anticipation, I have defied father time and I feel great. As I arise from my slumber, my thighs began screaming at me and the challenge for the day will be how will I ever be able to tie my shoes. ‘til next month, then The Weekend Warrior

ADULT REC ROUND-UP ON THE HARDWOOD...
In the Monday Night Men’s Basketball League at the Safety Harbor Rec Center it’s the MONSTARS and Delta Air Squad in a neck and neck battle for the top spot in the standings. Both teams finished the regular season with identical 6-1 records, with each team beating the other once. The Air Squad comes into the playoffs on a roll and they scored 113 points in the regular season finale against BongoUS. The MONSTARS have a high powered offense led by last season’s scoring leader David Pisarcik. Pisarcik is currently second in the league, less than a half a point per game behind Michael Dorceus of BongoUS, who leads at 30.9 PPG. Delta Air has a trio of scorers, all bunched together
The Pro Marine/Hooters undefeated champs.
BlockingJay Part 2 is tops with 23.3 PPG. Their play-offs begin on December 10th.
JUST FOR KICKS...
5th, 6th and 7th in the league. Otis White, Eric Gil and Michael McCarthy average between 19 and 22 PPG respectively. The play-offs are about to start and they will crown a champion by Christmas. The MONSTARS take on the Blue Devils who finished the season at 4-3 in the other semi final. In the Thursday Night Men’s Basketball League in St. Petersburg, the back to back champs, Hand Down, Man Down, are back on top with a 3-0 record in the Fall “Quickie” League. Edgar Bergollo is tied with teammate Brad Depaul for second in the league averaging 19.3 PPG. Darrell Paxton of
The Thursday Night Coed Kickball League at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater crowned a champion. The Pro Marine/Hooters team went undefeated at 7-0 during the regular season and cruised through the play-offs with a 19-6 victory over Cosmo Carpet in the semifinals. They wrapped up the title with a 18-5 dismantling of the Mustangs. The Mustangs went 6-1 in the regular season, with their only two losses coming at the hands of Pro Marine/Hooters in the first game of the season. They book-ended their season with a final loss to Pro Marine.
KINGS OF THE PINS...
It’s play off time at Sunrise Lanes in St. Petersburg and Babu Desu, Shawn Buske, Dave Nicholson and Nate Santiago, aka The Kingpins, did not make it to the semi-finals and did not defend their Monday night summer league title. The torch was passed to the Jello Shots who beat Splits Happen 6-zip in the semifinals. Spare Time knocked off Livin’ on a Spare to set up the final match as The Shots beat the Spares 4-2 for the title. Robbie Doohaluk led the Jello Shots with a 161 average, good for just 10th in the league. He and teammates Greg LaBanca, Donny Loewer and Carl Goodwin just manage to find a

Scott Grages of Livin’ on a Spare has dominated the men’s scoring lead all season long, averaging a sizzling 231, 32 points higher than second place Tim Mogelgaard of The Wesley Crushers. Larnel Sultan and Brandon Giles of Splits Happen are tied for third, averaging 186. On the women’s side, Ashley Succow and Jessica Succow are one-two in scoring average with a 144 and 141 average respectively.
With a new season under way, Jello Shots has added league scoring leader Scott Grages to the roster. With Carl Goodwin and Robbie Doohaluk making up the remainder of the three man roster, look for the Shots to be all but unbeatable. Grages is out to his usual hot start, averaging 244 more than 50 points ahead of second place Tim Mogelgaard of the Wesley Crushers.

Clearwater’s Winter Wonderland Clearwater’s Winter Wonderland, sponsored by Clearwater Community Volunteers (CCV), lights up the downtown on December 4th at 6:00 pm on the new Osceola Courtyard, an area transformed by the Church of Scientology from an eyesore to a beautiful park for residents. For the past 23 years, Winter Wonderland has served over 100,000 families of Tampa Bay and beyond with its charmingly decorated alpine cottages. It is a child’s magical playground of Holiday fun. Children decorate cookies with Mrs. Claus, visit with Santa, pet baby animals, ride ponies and the Winter Wonderland train, slide down the 20-foot slide, jump enthusiastically in Winter Wonderland’s bouncy house or take a spin on the human gyroscope. This year’s Winter Wonderland features a brand new stage where entertainers from all over the area will provide musical entertainment,
animal shows, and Christmas plays for the visiting families. Every year, a 60-man volunteer force works for over 6,000 manhours to raise funds, and build and run the sparkling village for Tampa Bay families. Winter Wonderland is also a food and toy drive for children for the Nourish to Flourish Program founded by Public Defender Bob Dillinger to help feed Pinellas County’s chronically hungry children. The volunteers have also created special days just for children from foster homes, the Sheriff’s Youth Ranch and other organizations which help
disadvantaged youth. Entrance to Winter Wonderland is FREE, but a small fee is charged for some of the activities. CCV asks that each visiting family or individual bring an unwrapped toy or canned good for the needy. Holiday Lights in the Gardens The
Florida Botanical Gardens will illuminate the holiday season with the annual Holiday Lights in the Gardens from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., now through New Year’s Day 2016. On opening night, volunteers will flip the switch on the holiday season as the holiday tree in the Wedding Garden is lit. Visitors to the Holiday Lights in the Gardens can delight in more than 750,000 environmentally friendly twinkling LED lights. In addition to laser lights, flora and fauna displays and decorated trees, a seven-foot gingerbread house with more than 600 lights, a 3-foot tall white swan and a five-foot tropical parrot have been added to the traditional array of light-lined paths with nightly free entertainment and visits from Santa Claus. Nightly live entertainment will add to the holiday spirit, with dancing, music, singing and a host of entertainers. Santa Claus will be on hand at his appointed times. Since schedules are subject to change, a schedule of ongoing events will be updated online. Vendors will also offer a variety of gifts and goods, and The Botanical Bounty gift shop will be open each night. Refreshments will be sold, as well. Sponsored by the
Florida Botanical Gardens Foundation, the celebration is FREE to children under 12, with a suggested donation of $4 per adult. Donations from last year’s event made this year’s event possible. The many helpers supporting the event each night are all volunteers, and additional help is always welcome. A Plant Sale will be held on Sunday, December 13th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day-long special event in the formal gardens will feature vendors selling an assortment of plants, including orchids, hibiscus, iris, bromeliads, native plants, herbs and citrus. Specialty vendors will offer a variety of items perfect for gift giving, including unique clothing, outdoor items, select food items, crafts, jewelry, candies and more. The Botanical Bounty gift shop will also be offering its beautiful products. FREE entry for visitors during the daylight hours.
On Sunday, December 27th, at 1:00PM, the popular Dog Parade will have tails wagging. The Florida Botanical Gardens is located at 12520 Ulmerton Road in Largo. FREE parking is available in the lot next to the gardens, at Heritage Village and at the offices of Parks and Conservation Resources/Pinellas County Extension. The entrances to the gardens will be open at these parking locations, as well as the east entrance at 12211 Walsingham Road, where handicapped parking is conveniently located.
