YFSN LOOKS BACK TO THE 90’s
WHERE ARE THEY NOW? DEXTER MCCLUSTER In 1998, the New York Yankees won the World Series, the Denver Broncos won the Super Bowl and Titanic won the Academy Award for Best Picture. That year, Peyton Manning was the top pick in the
NFL draft and Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened in Orlando. Also in 1998, we met a five foot two inch 73 pound running back who loved eating pizza and watching the McCluster was a star at Largo High School where he gained over 2,400 yards his senior year, the first Pinellas County player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season.
Dexter dominated to the point where he scored a touchdown every two and a half times he touched the football.
TV show, Kehan and Kel. The 10 year old Largo Packer liked playing baseball and his favorite subject in school was math. Math would come in handy later in life when he needed to know where to put the commas within all those zeros. He was a kid like any other kid. Marlan Wayans was his favorite actor and he loved eating at Shoney’s. He listened to the band Fugees and was often heard saying things like, “There is no I in Team.” He loved the Broncos and wanted to play like Warrick Dunn. That kid’s name was Dexter McCluster. Playing in the Pinellas Youth Football Conference that year, Dexter was so dominating, he scored a touchdown every two and a half times he touched the football. When he was profiled by YFSN in ‘98, he said his future plans were to play in the NFL. Well, a lot of kids have said that over the years, but no one really expects them to achieve

He played college ball at ‘Ole Miss where he earned All-SEC honors as both a running back and wide receiver while amassing over 4,000 all purpose yards.
McCluster was a star at Largo High School where he gained over 2,400 yards his senior year, the first Pinellas County player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season. He earned first-team All-State Class 5A honors from the Florida Sports Writers Association after helping lead Largo High School to the 2005 district title. He was named All-Suncoast Player of the Year by the St. Petersburg Times and selected Most Valuable Player of Florida Athletic Coaches Association North-South Football AllStar Classic. Considered by many as
being “too small” to play in the NFL, McCluster defied the odds every time he put the pads on. After a stunning high school career he played college ball at ‘Ole Miss where he earned All-SEC honors as both a running back and wide receiver while amassing over 4,000 all purpose yards. Sometimes difficult to define his position, one thing was for sure... opposing coaches needed to know where he was on the field or he would burn them. The best word to describe his running style is “dazzling.” In 2010, McCluster was drafted in the second round by the Kansas City Chiefs where he excelled as a kick returner with over 750 return yards his rookie year. McCluster played four years with the Chiefs and became a pass catching machine out of the backfield totaling over 1,500 receiving yards and was selected to

BIG LEAGUE BOYS CHALLENGE FOR WORLD SERIES TITLE The District 12 Big League AllStars knew they had a good team with strong pitching and big bats. Their confidence grew as they went undefeated in Fort Myers to win the Florida State Title and earn a road trip north to Easley, South Carolina for the Southeast Regional tournament. The stakes went up as the team moved up the food chain and adjustments needed to be made. The unhittable blazing fastball at Districts is much less devastating at the Regionals, and a pitcher facing deeper line-ups
needs to mix it up a bit more to get outs. Hitters accustomed to getting their licks against second tier arms late in games, quickly find that the hands at Regionals are holding nothing but aces. Team Florida opened the Southeast Regionals against West Virginia and quickly proved that last paragraph wasn’t relevant, erupting for 14 runs en route to a 14-zip dominating victory. Up next, Team Florida shut out Tennessee 4-0 to move on to the
winners bracket and a match up with undefeated Virginia. Team Florida’s hurlers would have to find a way to slow the freight train of a Virginia offense that had scored 31 runs in their first two games. Matty Adams was handed the ball and headed to the bump with the daunting task of stifling that potent offense. Adams was up to the task and the Florida bats sent five players scampering across home plate as they eked out a 5-4 victory and a berth in the championship game. Virginia went back to the drawing
District 12 , Section Seven, Florida State and Southeast Big League Champions: 1 Travis Starkey, 2 Sean Murtha, 4 Matty Adams, 5 Reid Zitzelberg , 7 Steven Wilson, 9 Kyle Kania, 11 Elijah Moravick, 12 Colton Widdows, 14 Riley Degnan, 16 Jordan Mazzucco, 17 AJ Hrica, 19 Jakob Sessa, 22 Aaric Wabnitz, 23 John Pichman, 25 Connor Churchill, 26 Jim Simmons, 7 Eric Easton, 28 Matt Morrow.

Page 13 With two top guns on the hill, the game quickly became a pitching duel and both starters traded zeros. Churchill recorded three 1-2-3 innings to start the game. Chapman did one better, recording 14 straight outs before Reid Zitzelberg drilled a two out base hit to center. After taking second on a wild pitch, Zitzelberg would be stranded there as Chapman enticed Sean Murtha to fly out to left to end the inning.
Matty Adams was handed the ball and headed to the bump with the daunting task of stifling a potent SC offense.
board and beat Tennessee 1-0 to get another crack at Team Florida in the championship game. Things would go no better for Virginia the second go around as Team Florida quieted the bats of Virginia en route to a 4-1 victory, punching their ticket to the Big League World Series. Team Florida, the Southeast champion, opened the World Series tournament against the host team, South Carolina District 1. The game took on College Southeastern Conference flavor since the two starters have signed college letters of intent to play in the Southeastern Conference. Team Florida’s hurler, Connor Churchill, of Palm Harbor, will be bringing the heat for the Florida Gators next season, while his SC counterpart, Logan Chapman, is headed to South Carolina in the fall.
South Carolina made some noise in the top of the fifth as Churchill yielded a free pass to Tristen Hudson to lead off the inning. Tyler Kirkland rapped a “ground ball with eyes” that sneaked through the right side of the infield for a base hit. After a force at third, Alex Medlin ripped a single to right, sending Kirkland racing for home. Florida’s right fielder Matty Adams uncorked a frozen rope to the plate, cutting down Kirkland to end the threat. With the score tied 0-0, the game went into extra innings with both teams waiting for the other to blink. Florida’s Jacob Sessa went the other way for a lead off bloop double down the right field line
to open the ninth off reliever Ryan Powers. Speedster Colton Widdows came in to pinch run as catcher Kyle Kania dug in at the plate. Kania watched a strike go by and then rifled the next pitch up the middle. It was on Powers in an instant and ricochetted of the pitcher’s thigh, falling harmlessly past the infield as Widdows scampered home with the winning run. Churchill threw nine shut out innings to earn the win. He allowed just four hits and two walks while fanning eight. Kania was the only player to have two hits in the game as well as the lone RBI. As of this writing, Team Florida takes on Hawaii, the West Region champion on Saturday, July 30th. Stay tuned... Churchill threw nine shut out innings to earn the win. He allowed just four hits and two walks, while fanning eight.

I AM FOR THE CHILD Abused and Neglected Children Need Advocates
Become a Guardian ad Litem
Over 1,000 children in Pinellas County do not have a volunteer Guardian ad Litem. As a Guardian ad Litem, you advocate in court and in the child welfare system for abused, abandoned, or neglected children. The Guardian ad Litem visits the child every month, becomes familiar with the child’s case, and makes recommedations to the court to help ensure the child has a safe, caring, and stable home. No prior experience is necessary; you will be well trained and supported by an experienced supervisory and legal staff. Once trained, volunteers spend an average of ten hours a month. To attend an informational meeting, call Maria at 727.464.6528 or go to www.guardianadlitem6.org for more information.
