THE 2015 ROAD TO WILLIAMSPORT T

Little League World Series. he long Road to Williamsport starts well before the Little League Dunedin’s run to the championship All Star Tournament starts in July. It game was not a smooth ride by starts in December in club houses and any stretch of the imagination. rec centers, as managers pour over They started the tournament on an registration forms and stat pages. It The Dunedin players get up close starts on baseball to watch as the offense banged out diamonds all over a dozen runs en route to the title. the country where 11 and 12 year old kids shag fly balls and field grounders under the watchful eyes of managers, coaches and parents during tryouts. The Road to Williamsport is a long and winding one that starts with thousands of kids and ends with ten or twelve hoisting the trophy in the most recognized youth sports event in the country, the Little League Major Baseball World Series and it all ends in Williamsport. AAU Baseball may have more talented teams, Big League Baseball may tout the latest college prospects, but nothing captures the drama, the excitement and hopes and dreams quite like the

auspicious note when they were edged out by Largo 4-3. A much different team took the field two days later when they faced Tarpon

Springs. The Dunedin bats erupted for 31 runs (no, that is not a typo) as they pounded the springs out of Tarpon 31-1 in four innings. After improving to 2-1 with a solid 11-zip victory over East Lake, the boys went up against the undefeated Safety Harbor team with a certain swagger. Safety Harbor took the Dunedin boys down a notch as they defeated them 8-5, sending Dunedin back to the drawing board with a 2-2 record. Dunedin had to wait two days and sit in the stands to watch the Largo-Tarpon Springs match up. A Tarpon Springs win would insure Dunedin a spot in the semi finals. A loss would have the Dunedin coaching staff not studying the scorecard, but their calculators as math would be the tie breaking factor. Largo would go on to defeat Tarpon, setting up three teams with identical 2-2 records, Dunedin, Largo and East Lake. It came down to runs allowed, and Dunedin, like a pair of blue jeans

MilPro Publications a size too small, would just squeeze into the second spot out of the pool and into the semi-finals. Holiday’s road to the finals was a smooth ride to a point and then things got dicey. Holiday opened the tournament edging out Clearwater in a slam fest, 13-12. They dispatched Countryside 10-3 and knocked off West Pasco 12-8 to stay undefeated, controlling their own destiny going into the final game of pool play. Remember that dicey reference? In the last game of pool play versus Palm Harbor, a win would give them the number one seed but a loss would put them in a three way tie with West Pasco

Page 7 and Palm Harbor. Holiday slid into the second seed and headed to the playoff but without much swagger as they got pounded 19-0 by Palm Harbor. In the semi finals, Holiday took on the only undefeated team in the tournament, Safety Harbor. Holiday ended their season and got some hop back in their steps with a 3-0 victory and a spot in the District 12 Championship game. Dunedin eliminated Palm Harbor in their semi final to set the stage for the D12 title. Mikey Shane headed out to the bump for Dunedin in the top half of the inning. Holiday’s Tim Ruf

Bryce Talley went three for three with a walk, a home run and three ribbies to lead Dunedin to the District 12 title.

led off the inning and reached on an error. Joey Marchiselli went down swinging as Ruf swiped second. Jake Mellor scratched out an infield hit to put a runner in scoring position. Shane dug in and struck out Jimmy Kissinger and induced Scott Pirozzi to tap out to end the inning. Holiday handed the ball and hopes to their big gun, Joey Marchiselli, as he trotted out to the hill in the bottom of the first. Short stop Noah Bukholt led off the game and drew a free pass. Marchiselli reared back and fanned Mikey Shane on three pitches for the first out. Up next, Bryce Talley rapped a base hit to

homer and a 4-zip Dunedin lead.

Shane sent Holiday down in order in the top of the second and Marchiselli returned the favor in the bottom half 1-2-3.

Holiday struck back in the top of the fourth. Jake Mellor led off with a base hit to left and came around to score Holiday’s first run on Jimmy Kissinger’s double. A stolen base, and passed ball sent Kissinger in with the second run, but Noah Tibbetts bounced out to third to end the inning as Holiday cut the Dunedin lead in half.

Shane was now in cruise control and fanned Nick Carvalho, Ruf and Marchiselli for another quick 1-2-3 inning. In the bottom of the third, Dunedin made some noise as Bukholt ripped a one out single to left and Mikey Shane drew a free pass, bringing Bryce Talley to the plate. Talley turned on a 1-1 fast ball and sent it downtown for a three run

Catcher Matthew Myrick led off the bottom of the fourth with a base on balls, Bukholt banged a two bagger, knocking in Myrick and Mikey Shane doubled him home to take a 6-2 lead. Talley rapped a ground ball with eyes that found it’s way through the infield, knocking in Mikey Shane as the wheels began to come off the bus for Holiday. Dunedin would

send five runners home to take a commanding 9-2 lead. With two quick K’s in the top of the fifth, Dunedin was looking for a quick inning, but Holiday was not about to go quietly into the night. Tim Ruf drilled a hit to right field, Joey Marchiselli jumped on the first pitch he saw and hammered it for a two bagger. Jake Mellor worked the count and got a fast ball in his wheelhouse, drilling it for a two out, two RBI single. He advanced to second on the throw home and scored on Jimmy Kissinger’s base hit to cut into the Dunedin lead to 9-5. In the bottom of the fifth, Holiday could not allow any more Dunedin base runners to score if they had any hopes of a last inning comeback. Connor Russell led off the inning

Mikey Shane scored the final run of the inning, leaving Holiday with an almost insurmountable 12-5 deficit. ADULT REC ROUND-UP DIGGING IN AT THE PLATE...

The Los Dukes of the Men’s Wednesday Night Softball League have an undefeated record but their biggest opponent is team Mother Nature. Her torrential rains has put the Dukes’ run to the title on hold as the Eddie C Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater is more suited for water polo than softball as of late. BFM Chivers, with just one loss and a draw, are in second place and Werther’s Originals hold the third spot waiting for the fields to dry.

ON THE HARDWOOD...

The weather outside may be dreadful but the hardwood has a roof, so the games go on as scheduled. The St. Petersburg Police Athletic League’s Thursday Night Men’s Summer Basketball League is heading into the elimination rounds. Team Hand Down, Man Down is still undefeated with a perfect 7-0 record. Behind league scoring leader Brad DePaul, who is averaging 25 points per game, the team earned a first round bye in the playoffs. Hand Down, Man Down will wait for the winner of the quarter-final match up between team Toon Squad and Club Trillon. The two teams combined for just two wins during the regular season, each posting identical 1-6 records, but this is single elimination time and all bets are off. Club Trillon is led by Matt Botu, who averaged 14.8 points a game, good for third highest in the league and is deadly from three point land. The Toon Squad’s John

O’Connor’s 11.3 points per game leads the team. The second and third seeds will match-up in the other semi-final. Number two seed team Shiddy Life with only two losses, came at the hands of Hand Down, Man Down and will play number three seed Jam Session who they edged out 46-42 back in June. In order to repeat that victory, they will have to find a way to shut down the Jam Session’s scoring machine, Stephen Castleberry, who drains 21 points a game, good for second in the league. Craig Cusson averages 14.3 points per game and leads the league in three pointers and Nicholas Hesterman’s 13.3 points per game lead a balanced offensive attack that will be hard to beat. Kyle Purvis of Shiddy Life has been a model of consistency, scoring a steady dozen points a game. Brad Depaul of Hand Down, Man Down had the league’s

top scoring night with 34 points. Nicholas Hesterman dropped in 26 points for second most in a game. Paul Pammer of Jam Session drained five treys and that ties him with teammate Craig Cusson for most three pointers in a game this season. The championship game will be played on August 13th.

ON THE PITCH...

At Coquina Key Park in St. Petersburg, the Wednesday Night Eight on Eight Co-ed Soccer League managed to crown Urban Brew Crew as league champs for it’s summer league before the deluge began. The Crew marched through the playoffs with dominating wins over team Mike Hawks 7-3 and team Who Knows 6-3, to earn a spot in the finals against team POW. In a tense hard fought battle, Urban Brew Crew held off a feisty POW team for a 9-8 victory and the league championship.

The Kingpins ( Babu Desu, Shawn Buske, Dave Nicholson and Nate Santiago) knocked off the number one seed Hookers Six in the finals to become the Summer Monday Night Bowling League Champs at Sunrise Lanes in St Petersburg.

MilPro Publications KINGS OF THE PINS...

At Sunrise Lanes in St. Petersburg the Kingpins knocked off the number one seed Hookers Six and their big gun Roger Sesti whose 194 average was second in the league, to become the Summer Monday Night Bowling League champs. The team consisting of Babu Desu, Shawn Buske, Dave Nicholson and Nate Santiago were balanced and steady going into the playoffs. Babu Desu averaged 165 and Shawn Buske’s 162 were sixth and seventh in the league respectively. Buske had a high game of 228, good for fourth highest in the league. The Kingpins knocked off the Munsuns in the semi finals before winning the title over the Hookers.

All About The Ace are league champions.

PLAYING IN THE SAND...

In the Thursday night Coed Volleyball League in Gulfport, it’s All About the Ace, both literally and figuratively since All About the Ace won the league championship. The team came into the play offs mired in a six game losing streak, but stepped up when it counted most, edging out Super Highway 2-1 in the semifinals and earning the championship against The Team Formerly Known as Attack Pack.

JUST FOR KICKS...

TENNIS ANYONE?...

If the rains hold off they should crown a champ by mid August.

Fall leagues in all the sports above will be starting soon. For more information or to register for a league call Tampa Bay Club Sport at 877- 820-2582 or visit tampabayclubsport.com.

If you think kickball is just for kids then come out to North Shore Park on Tuesday night for the Thursday Night Co-ed Kickball league. The league has ten teams and they are in play off elimination mode. Three teams, Grape Balls of Fire, evASIve Apes and Kick in a Box all have just one lone loss going into the elimination rounds.

Three weeks into the Tuesday Tennis Co-ed League at the McMullen Tennis Complex in Clearwater sees Team Shettle/Turley undefeated at 3-0. Team Johnson/Morros are in second at 2-1. It’s early with the six pairs in this league preparing for the play offs in September.

IT’S BACK TO SCHOOL TIME! The summer’s almost over and you’re ready to take a deep breath of relief! You’re making it through the scorching and/or soggy days of summer and still have most of your sanity intact. Over are the endless scheduling coordinations of dropping little Johnny at soccer camp at 8:00 am while racing across town to drop Megan at dance camp in time to get to the office before your boss gives you another one of those, “So, you’re late again?” stares.

again?” stare. That works great if you have kids in high school since their day starts at 7:05 am. Of course, high school age kids can pretty much get themselves back and forth to school on their own. If you have younger kids, things get a little trickier. Most elementaries start at 8:35 am and most middle schools start at 9:30 am,

Breathe deep, now you don’t have to rush out of the office at the end of the day, you can even stay late to work on that proposal and watch your boss leave before you.

Almost over are the mind boggling questions at the end of the business day like, “What camp are the kids at today and who’s picking them up?” Almost over are the sports camps, dance camps, acting camps, arts ‘n craft camps, computer camps, half day camps, full day camps, extended before and after care... what time to drop them off, pick them up... Do they provide lunch? Do I pack lunch? OMG! What if the kid get sick! ARGGGGH!!!

But soon, the kids will be back in school and your life will return to normal. But, normal, as we all know, is a relative term... In case anyone was paying attention, the business community and the educational system are not on the same schedule. Now, if you work a nine-to-five day, say in Tampa and live in Pinellas, you need to hit the gridlock by 7:45 am to be sure your boss doesn’t give you the aforementioned, “So, you’re late

his middle school at 4:00 pm. You absolutely don’t want to add a, “So, you’re leaving early again?” stare to your boss’ arsenal, so what to do? You find a program that has afterschool pickup. Johnny has been doing martial arts and there are some dojos that have after school pick-up from the schools. Check. And we have Megan being picked up after school from her morning before and after school program. Johnny is picked up by his martial arts program and they’re just a couple of miles apart.

Game, Set, Match! And, you’re looking forward to sleeping in this Saturday morning and having a relaxing weekend. But wait!

way past your 7:45 am appointment with the Courtney Campbell Causeway. So, now you need before-school child care, kinda like a mini-summer camp. OK, so you find one of those Before and After School Programs that provide early morning drop-off and off to the office you go, problem solved. Well, not quite. Little Megan gets out of elementary school at 2:35 pm and Johnny leaves

Little league practice is at 8 am Saturday morning and swim team’s on the other side of town at nine! There’s shopping for school supplies, one of the kids needs new sneakers and they both need haircuts! PTA anyone? No worries, you can rest when the kids are all grown up...

By the way, ever heard of grand kids?!?!

bus. As a child, I bemoaned this yearly routine and swore I would never suffer my children this horrific fate. However, as an adult, I now look back and I am thankful that my mother instilled this trait in me and I passed it on to my own daughters. As an educator, I see the value as well. Here are some helpful tips that will help parents and children get ready for the school year.

The dog days of summer may bring oppressive humidity but they also bring the start of the school year. The third week of August will mean the start of school for many children across the state of Florida. As a teacher, it means wrapping up what felt like a too short While teachers are preparing for the summer and preparing for another start of the school year, parents and 1. to break school rules than you are teaching your child that rules are not important. 3. Work with your child’s teacher. You are a team! This does not mean you must agree with everything the teacher says or does. Keep communication open and honest. Refrain from “bad mouthing” the teacher in front of your child. If it is evident that you do not respect your child’s teacher, than your child will not respect the teacher. Even if you do not respect the person, respect the position. 4. Be involved! Volunteer your time either in or out of the classroom. Participate in conferences. Learn about how your child learns and what your child learns. Ask your child questions about the school day. Extend their learning outside of the classroom. Remember, you are your child’s first teacher. 5. Practice school routines. Help your child be prepared and alert on the first day by setting a realistic school routine prior to the night before school starts. Children need a good night’s rest, physical activity and a healthy diet to be successful in school. Set a morning routine and practice it. Prepare and plan a place for homework. Ensure your child has all the tools needed to be successful both in school and at home for homework. 6. This last tip is just for parents, coordinate a Boo Hoo/ Yahoo Breakfast. This is a great opportunity to celebrate and commiserate with fellow parents the start of the school year. Not to mention the opportunity to get to know other parents. School is right around the corner. It is time to get ready. The preparation of teachers, parents and students can set the tone of the school year prior to the first day. It is up to you!

HELPING KIDS LEARN AND ACHIEVE AFTER THE BELL RINGS When the school day ends, children and teens need opportunities to learn and engage in meaningful activities. Their success out of school can have a positive effect on their success in school. Unfortunately, one in four U.S. children and 19% of children in Florida are left unsupervised after 3 p.m., according to Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness advocacy organization. To help close this gap, the YMCA of the Suncoast is offering a quality afterschool program. The Y’s afterschool program combines academics with play and offers a caring and safe environment where youth can achieve, discover a sense of belonging and build relationships. As a leading nonprofit committed to youth development, and a pioneer in afterschool programs, the Y believes in supporting the social-emotional, cognitive and physical processes that all youth experience – from early learning and preschool through high school graduation and college – to provide the best chance for youth to succeed in school and life.

“Learning enrichment after school is essential to increasing children’s success in school,” said Beth Gettig, Vice President Youth Development, YMCA of the Suncoast. “The opportunity to get additional learning and support, and participate in meaningful activities can inspire the motivation and ability to succeed.” Studies show participation in afterschool programs helps boost school attendance and academic performance and reduces gaps in academic achievement among children from disadvantaged households. In the YMCA of the Suncoast afterschool program, youth receive help with homework and they have activities like youth sports, arts and STEM. Financial assistance is available to those in need, to ensure every child and teen has the opportunity to learn and grow at the Y. For more information about the YMCA of the Suncoast afterschool program, please visit ymcasuncoast.org/afterschool-care.

The New School Year is Coming! Pre-planning and preparing for the new school year can make a huge difference in your child’s attitude, confidence, and performance both socially and academically that will last throughout the year. The transition from July to August can be difficult for both children and parents. Even children who are excited to return to school must adjust to the greater levels of activity, structure, and, for some, pressures associated with school life. Here are a few tips to help ease the transition and promote a successful school year experience: aCHECK UP TIME: Good physical and mental health are essential for your child’s success in the new school year. This is the perfect time to schedule doctor, dental and eye checkups. If your child intends to participate in sports or other extracurricular activities that require a physical, now is the time to do it! aBE PREPARED: Often schools have their new school year information posted on their web site or will send it by mail. Take time to review the material as it arrives and include your child in the review. These packets include important information about your child’s teacher, room number, school supply requirements, sign-ups for after-school sports and activities, school calendar dates, bus transportation, health and emergency forms and volunteer opportunities. aSCHOOL SUPPLY SHOPPING: Try to get the supplies as early as possible and fill backpacks a week or two before school starts. Some teachers require specific supplies, so save receipts for items that you may need to return later. aBACK TO THE ROUTINE: Plan to re-establish the bedtime and mealtime routines at least 1 week before school starts. Talk with your child about the benefits of school routines because they won’t be over tired or overwhelmed by school work and activities. Include pre-bedtime reading and household chores if these did not occur over the summer. Morning routines are especially important including breakfast routines. Packing backpacks and laying out clothes and shoes for the next day will help minimize morning chaos and get the day off to a good start. Make lunches the night before. aSCHOOL VISITS: If your child is young or in a new school, visit the school with your child. Meeting the teacher, locating the classroom, locker, lunchroom,

etc., will help ease anxieties and also allow your child to ask questions about the new environment. aDINNER TIME MADE EASY: If time and finances permit, pre-cook and freeze a few meals that will help make the first couple weeks of evening meals easier. Having dinners prepared ahead of time will help by not adding to household stress during the first week of school and decrease the chances of making unhealthy snack choices when your child gets home from school “starving.” Slow cookers like Crock Pots are a wonderful thing. Not only will dinner be done when the family arrives home from a busy day but the house smells great and clean-up is so much easier! (Slow Cooker Tip: Discover slow cooker liners. They make clean up even easier. Find them in the foil and plastic wrap aisle.)

THE FIRST WEEK a TOUCH BASE WITH YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER: Send a quick note to your child’s teachers to let them know that you are interested in getting regular feedback on how and what your child is doing in school. Be sure to attend back-to-school night and introduce yourself. Find out how they like to communicate (notes, email or phone). aYOUR SCHEDULE: To the extent possible, postpone business trips, volunteer meetings, and extra projects. You want to be free to help your child acclimate to the school routine and overcome the confusion or anxiety that many children experience at the start of a new school year. aMORNING ROUTINES: Make sure your child has plenty of time to get up, eat breakfast and get to school. For very young children taking the bus, pin an index card to their shirt or backpack with information like the teacher’s name, bus number, your daytime contact information, etc. Have schoolage children set their own alarm clocks to get up in

the morning. aVOLUNTEER IN THE CLASSROOM: If possible, plan to volunteer in the classroom at least periodically throughout the year. Doing so helps your child understand that school and family life are linked and that you care about the learning experience. aEXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Your child may benefit most from 1 or 2 activities that are fun, reinforce social development and teach new skills. Too much scheduled time can be stressful, especially for young children, and may make it harder to concentrate on schoolwork. When considering extracurricular activities, keep in mind your family schedule and personal energy level. If your child doesn’t want to participate in organized extracurricular activities, you may want to explore other options to help build interests and social skills. For example, check out the local library for monthly reading programs, find out if your local recreation or community center offers drop-in activities such as art and cooking classes. Craft and building supply stores often offer children’s programs. Talk to other parents and schedule regular play dates and park activities with their children. From the entire team at R’Club Child Care, we wish you and your child a successful and enriching school year. With over 47 locations including, Early Learning Academies, Elementary School Age Programs, Middle School Programs and many other support services, R’Club provides quality programs that promote school readiness and ongoing academic success to help ensure that children become life-long learners and productive citizens. Over 32 teams and more than 800 participants created quite an event. An early rainstorm cooled the participates off and made for some really good mud in the pits. Teams went head to head and against each other for time in the eight mud and water packed events which exhausted, exhilarated,

SPOTBALL PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

MADISION NEUHAUS Sixteen year old softball phenom Madison Neuhaus is a sophomore at East Lake High School and last season hit a whopping .481 and led the varsity team in just about every offensive category there is. Madison wrapped up her sophomore season going 2 for 3 and crushed a round tripper in their quarter final loss against Northeast. Heading into her junior year, in addition to being in the Academy of Business at East Lake High, she is also enrolled in Florida Virtual School. With this very busy

academic schedule, she found a little time to PLAY this summer and her summer has been going pretty well! In June at the Gold Star Elite Showcase in Tallahassee during their skills competition, she went yard on 10 out of 20 pitches, sending officials scurrying over the out field fences to retrieve the expensive balls she deposited for home runs. Her closest competitor barely posted half that many. Later in June she traveled to the Under Armor Showcase tournament

in Savannah. At the Georgia tournament she stunned the crowd by driving in all four runs in the team’s 4-1 victory in the title game. Madison crushed a three round homer to give her team a 3-1 lead. In her next at bat, on the very first pitch, she added the icing to the cake with a solo shot for a 4-1 win and the tournament championship. It should come as no surprise that there are a number of Division I, along with other, schools actively interested in Madison playing for their programs.

Dunedin Stirling Soccer Club Hires New Director of Coaching, Eddie Loewen A native of Lithuania, Loewen grew up in Germany and got his start as a player with youth clubs FC Preussen Espelkamp and SC Herford before starting his professional career with FC Remscheid in 1998. In 2000, Loewen headed to Berry College in Georgia, where he received a BA in Health and Physical Education. During this time he accepted an invitation to represent Germany in the 2000 International Beach Soccer Tournament, making this his first beach soccer appearance where he faced Eric Cantona and his French squad. In 2001 and 2004 he played in the Beach Soccer World Cup and continued as a player and coach for the German National Team until 2009. In 2002, Loewen moved to the University of Akron, where he gained his first college coaching experience as assistant coach of the women’s soccer team while continuing studies towards Sports Science in the master’s program. He returned to the pro game in 2004, suiting up for the Cincinnati Riverhawks of the USL A-League before returning to Germany with DSC Arminia Bielefeld in the German 3rd professional Division

(Regionalliga). He ended his outdoor playing career with BSV Rehden in 2008. In 2009, Loewen accepted the position as Associate Director of Coaching for Everton Florida in St. Petersburg, where he remained for six years, coaching and developing players, ranking in the top sixteen within Florida.

Recently, he worked as Director of Beach Soccer for the USL, where his role involved expanding the marketing and sponsorship opportunities surrounding the MBS tournament series and growing the sport of beach soccer in the US. He attended FIFA’s first beach soccer instructor’s course in Zurich in 2007.

He was appointed to co-author the FIFA Beach Soccer Coaching Manual, which is being used to introduce and develop beach soccer to FIFA’s member associations worldwide. Given his lengthy career and experience as a player and coach of both traditional (11v11) and beach soccer, Loewen was invited by CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) to form part of their Coaching Instructor Panel. He has and currently remains active conducting FIFA and CONCACAF coaching courses around the world. In 2012 Loewen formed GFL Soccer Enterprises in efforts to provide talented players with unique options and experiences. As CEO, his main objective is to identify elite players whom he can further coach and develop for collegiate and professional opportunities they may otherwise not have had. In the last two years, 32 players tried out with professional clubs in Germany of which one, Steven Rudderham, is signing with U19 Bundesliga Team FC Magdeburg. Other participating players have been accepted to play collegiate soccer in the US.

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING TO OPERATE LIGHTNING HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY LEAGUE The Tampa Bay Lightning, through its Community Hockey Development Department, will operate the Lightning High School Hockey League (LHSHL) beginning with the 2015-16 season in September, the club announced today. The Board of Directors and Membership of the former Florida High School Hockey Association (FHSHA) voted to cease operations and have the Lightning organization operate, manage and administer high school hockey in the Tampa Bay region. SAHOF (Statewide Amateur Hockey of Florida) approved the transaction at its Annual Meeting, which was held on May 29 and 30 in Naples, FL. The Lightning will now be responsible for all aspects of high school hockey in the region including admitting teams to the LHSHL, registering players, scheduling practice ice and games, securing on-ice officials, administering supplemental discipline, conducting championship playoffs and All-Star game(s), and overseeing all aspects of LHSHL operations. In addition, the organization intends to offer both Varsity and Junior Varsity playing options for the upcoming season, and to increase the number of games played. The LHSHL will also focus on geographic and traditional rivalries while

attempting to reduce travel time for players and their families. “Our goals in operating the new LHSHL include expanding and growing participation in the game, elevating high school hockey to an advanced competitive level for student athletes, creating a developmental structure where underclassmen and women are able to improve their skills, and creating

an environment where student athletes recognize the importance of academics and the need for good sportsmanship and community service,” said Jay Feaster, Executive Director of Community Hockey Development for the Lightning, and President of the new LHSHL. At a minimum the Lightning expect to ice at least 17-teams for the upcoming season, with a number of new teams expressing interest in joining the LHSHL this season or next. While the LHSHL will be administered solely by the Lightning, an Advisory

Committee has been assembled to assist the organization and provide insight on important issues. Advisory Board members include former FHSHA Board Member and one of the founders of the FHSHA, Dan Bubley, Esq., Manatee High School Head Coach, Eric Wessel, Tampa Bay Skating Academy General Manager, Glyn Jones, J.P. Morgan Securities LLC, Dan Howat, and Lightning Manager of Partnerships and hockey mom, Suzy O’Malley. Other standing Committees will include the Disciplinary Committee consisting of former FHSHA member and Director of Sales and Marketing at Innisbrook Resort, Bill McKay, Lightning Alumni, Jassen Cullimore, and Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex Director of Hockey, Fred Eaton, as well as the Boundary Committee comprised of former FHSHA President, Ed De la Paz, Lightning Alumni, Mathieu Garon, and Lightning Senior Director, Community Relations, Kasey Smith. Additionally, other officers and directors include Community Hockey Coordinator, Tom Garavaglia and EVP of Communications, Bill Wickett. The new LHSHL website is w w w. L i g h t e n i n g H i g h S c h o o l HockeyLeague.com and team registration for the 2015-16 season is now open.

Become a Guardian ad Litem

Over 1,000 children in Pinellas County do not have a volunteer Guardian ad Litem. As a Guardian ad Litem, you advocate in court and in the child welfare system for abused, abandoned, or neglected children. The Guardian ad Litem visits the child every month, becomes familiar with the child’s case, and makes recommedations to the court to help ensure the child has a safe, caring, and stable home. No prior experience is necessary; you will be well trained and supported by an experienced supervisory and legal staff. Once trained, volunteers spend an average of ten hours a month. To attend an informational meeting, call Maria at 727.464.6528 or go to www.guardianadlitem6.org for more information.
