TRICK OR TREATING this year?
Have Fun But Be Safe!
The days of sending our costumed angels off into the Halloween night to collect goodies from the neighbors, only having to worry if they’ll eat too much candy, are long gone. These days, safety is a primary concern of parents when it comes to the annual trick-or-treat ritual. Our kids, on the other hand, have just one focus, having fun. Well, maybe two, having fun and getting lots! of candy. How can our safety concerns as parents and our kids’ desire for Halloween adventure be reconciled?
When the kids are small, mom and dad can accompany them on their ghoulish romp through the neighborhood in search of ways to fund their dentist’s winter trip to St. Barts. At the end of the night, parents will sift through the bags of goodies, removing anything that looks, smells, feels suspicious; passing on all the secured candies to the little tykes for an evening of sugar highs. When the kids are older they’d rather put needles in their eyeballs than be seen with mom or dad parading around the neighborhood wearing a batman costume, carrying a plastic pumpkin doing duty as a treat-
or-treat bag. We, therefore, need alternatives and ones that’ll keep mom from chewing off her hundred dollar manicure. Fortunately, there are many... Most of the parks and recreation departments and local community associations will be hosting some sort of controlled Halloween event. Tarpon Springs Recreation will be hosting a

It’s a “spooktacular family affair!” Concession foods will be on sale including hot dogs, pizza, Italian sausage, popcorn, candy, chips, nachos and cheese, and beverages. children ask, “Why do I have to learn math?” and think that they won’t need math later in life. Well, it is true that there are many jobs other than being a mathematician or math teacher, but most professional careers require a college degree. Math plays a pivotal role in getting into college, succeeding in college, and having the most opportunities for career development. Children may not understand the value of a college degree when they are young, but it is important for parents to ensure that their children have a strong academic foundation to give them the most options later on. Based on U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, occupations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) have the greatest job prospects in the future. Workers with a degree in a STEM field were significantly less likely to face unemployment compared with their non-STEM counterparts. Since the beginning of 2000, growth in STEM jobs was three times greater than growth in non-STEM jobs.
The Occupational Outlook Handbook, created by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, offers a projection of the fastest growing professions and of the most amount of new jobs. The occupations with the best job outlook can be grouped together into the following five categories: 1. Health 2. Computer 3. Engineering 4. Business 5. Higher Education Most of the occupations projected to have the best outlook are heavily rooted in STEM. Not only do the majority of these occupations need college degrees, but many of the careers also require a graduate degree. R O I N E S S G N I S MU I liked Halloween when I was a kid. What kid doesn’t? I would get to dress up in a scary costume and stay out late trickor-treating for candy in my neighborhood. I would then go home and assess my bounty then spend the night getting a major sugar rush. Later on as a teenager and young adult I would get to go to Halloween parties where all the girls were dressed in sexy vampire or black cat outfits, and I would load up on candy and spend the night getting a major
When I was married and the kids were little, I would help them pick out a costume (and one for me as well) take them trick-or-treating around the neighborhood and then heist their bounty and spend the night getting a major sugar rush. But things have changed. Now I have to BUY the candy. And all those kids knocking at my door looking for free handouts has me feeling like dressing up like Ebineezer Scrooge and spouting off about prisons and work houses... and it’s after nine, so stop knocking on my door, and by the way a sweatshirt and a pillow case does not qualify as a costume, so no candy for you! So, after turning off the porch light, sending away the under costumed... I get to assess the bounty I hoarded and spend the night getting a major sugar rush.... and a toothache in the morning... Wednesday, September 23 the Safety Harbor Chamber of Commerce selected the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation as the Nonprofit of the Year at their annual dinner. The evening was spent at the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa honoring chamber businesses of the year, welcoming the 2015-16 Board of Directors and celebrating 85 years of commerce in the area. The Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation was proud to receive the award and with the support of the chamber, will
continue to educate and assist at-risk children by improving their self-esteem, character, work ethic, social adjustment and academic performance, using the golf course as a living classroom. About the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation: In 1993, the Foundation opened the public partnership school for fifth-graders deemed at risk for dropping out of school. In 2008, the Foundation rebranded the school and created the Chi Chi Rodriguez Academy. The expanded Academy campus now serves 95 4th through 8th grade students. Upon graduation, students are integrated back into public high schools, not only better prepared for academic success but also for the game of life. The Academy also offers scholarship opportunities for future college and higher learning expenses. In addition to the Academy’s public partnership school, the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation funds The First Tee of Clearwater and offers a licensed Boys & Girls Club in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club of the Suncoast for after school programming on its 170 acre Clearwater campus. In other news, the Verizon Foundation and Chi Chi hosted an inaugural charity golf outing to benefit the Chi Chi Rodriguez Academy with over 100 players and sponsors. The Academy raised $71,362 that day to be put to good use, providing support services for the students who are typically in the bottom 20% of the district school population.

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BULLYING PREVENTION MONTH National Bullying Prevention Month is
a campaign in the United States founded in 2006 by PACER’s National Center for Bullying Prevention. The campaign is held during the month of October and unites communities nationwide to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. Traditionally held the first week in October, the event was expanded in 2010 to include activities, education, and awareness building for the entire month.
PACER disseminated nationwide press releases through their partners and media channels, encouraging a call to action to educate the community about their role in bullying prevention, which provided the groundwork for the campaign to be consistently recognized as an annual event.
National Bullying Prevention Month is recognized in communities across the United States, with hundreds of schools and organizations signing on as partners. Facebook, Disney, CNN and Yahoo! Kids have supported the month through media outreach and dissemination. PACER developed the initial campaign, National Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week, in response to the need to raise awareness of bullying. It was historically viewed as “...a childhood rite of passage” and that bullying “...made kids tougher.” The reality is that bullying has devastating effects such as school avoidance, loss of self-esteem, increased anxiety, and depression. PACER reached out to the community through partnerships with education based organizations such as the National PTA, the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association to provide schools, parents and students with resources to respond to bullying behavior and to begin the shift of societal acceptance of bullying to social change of addressing the issue through education and support.

Make friends with someone you don’t know at school. If you’ve ever been isolated from others at school or you were knew at school and it took time to make friends, you know what it feels like to be left out. Or even if you were never isolated, imagine how it would feel. Make friends with someone at school who you don’t know. Invite them to sit at your lunch table or join you in an after school activity. You probably wish someone had done that for you. Be a leader. Take action and don’t let anyone at school be in isolation.

Locally, the Greater Ridgecrest YMCA and the Pinellas School Age Program hosted the second annual Run, Walk, Roll Against Bullying 5K Run and 1 Mile Kids’ Dash. The race was held Saturday, October 3rd and started at the Ridgecrest Y located at 1801 119th Street North in Largo.

Students can participate by creating positive messages on post-its and handing them out to students at school; creating anti-bullying videos and sharing them on the STOMP Out Bullying site; sharing inspirational stories on the STOMP Out Bullying site; creating an act of kindness every day and challenging others to do the same.
