hanksgiving really is a great time of year! All the members of the family get together; the smell of turkey cooking in the kitchen; stuffing’s being made and cranberry sauce is served up in the finest holiday china. Dad carves the turkey as brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends gather ‘round the holiday table to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast. Tall tales are traded and the precious moments of life are shared with one and all. After bellies are full and all pumpkin pies eaten, everyone heads to the living room to watch the Detroit Lions play football on the big screen TV. This year, the Lions may even win the game! But for many less fortunate people, Thanksgiving Day can be a very sad, lonely and hungry time. In 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service (USDA) reported that 12.2 percent of households of Florida are “food insecure,” meaning that they lack consistent access to adequate amounts of nutritious food. That number rose to 14.8 percent in the report from 2011. In the same year, it was reported that over 6,000 people were homeless in Pinellas County alone, with over 30% of that number being kids. This past month, a report was released by the Pinellas County Homeless Leadership
Board stating that nearly 7,000 people in Pinellas are homeless, a 15% increase over the 2011 survey. Advocates for the homeless have, for years, expressed concern that these numbers greatly underestimate the size of the homeless population in Pinellas. Some estimates have it as high as 23,000. Getting accurate
drug or alcohol abuse issues. Some families could go hungry on Thanksgiving Day and some families could be without food or toys for their children on Christmas Day, but for a variety of local charities, civic organizations and everyday people whose efforts give the less fortunate a day with full stomachs, smiles on the faces of their children and hope for the future. Here are just a few: The Metropolitan Ministries helps poor, hungry and homeless men, women and children in their time of need. People can find food, clothing, shelter and other vital services. But more importantly, they find compassion and hope; hope for a brighter day and future.

It’s funded through the charitable support of the community, including individuals, businesses, congregations, schools, foundations and civic groups. Their “Holiday of Hope,” 5,200 square foot tent served around 4,000 families throughout the last holiday season. The tent remains up from late October through the end of December and about 150 volunteers are needed every day. The tent is located at 3214 US Highway 19 in Holiday.

Each year since 1993, the Clearwater Community Volunteers put on Winter Wonderland, which is a two to three-week long charity drive in downtown Clearwater whose proceeds benefit the children of Pinellas County. Winter Wonderland is a complete Christmas village with an entertainment stage, photos with Santa, cookie decorating with Mrs. Claus, a hot chocolate shop, a petting zoo, pony rides, playground, bouncy house, giant slide and the Holiday Express Train! Entrance to Winter Wonderland, located at the NW Corner of Ft. Harrison Ave. and Drew St.. in downtown Clearwater, is free, but visitors are asked to bring a non-perishable food item and/or an unwrapped toy. The toys and canned goods are donated to local area charities, such as the Homeless Emergency Project sponsored by

The Largo Cultural Center is proud to be part of The Suncoast Singers’ 35th Season Celebration in Pinellas County by hosting a Fall and Spring performance, named A Century of Music, Part 1 and Part 2. The Oakdale Christmas Light Display, now in it’s 38th year, will begin displays starting Friday, November 28 and running thru January 3rd, 2015 from 6 pm to 10 pm nightly, rain or clear skies. The light show is among the largest and longest running home displays in the United States. It is one-half acre in size, with approximately 1/2 million lights. There is a walking yard tour that includes a small pond, several waterfalls and fountains, an 18-train HO scale railroad with carnival rides, and many animated and lighted figures and inflatables. The house is covered with lights, with many window and cabinet displays. Several Christmas trees tower over the display, one rising to 70 feet. There are hands-on games and bubble machines for the kids. It took ten people about three months to install the entire display with ten trailer loads to bring all the items from storage.

Over 1,000 children in Pinellas County do not have a volunteer Guardian ad Litem. As a Guardian ad Litem, you advocate in court and in the child welfare system for abused, abandoned, or neglected children. The Guardian ad Litem visits the child every month, becomes familiar with the child’s case, and makes recommedations to the court to help ensure the child has a safe, caring, and stable home. No prior experience is necessary; you will be well trained and supported by an experienced supervisory and legal staff. Once trained, volunteers spend an average of ten hours a month. Holiday Lights in the Gardens
A Community Tradition at the Florida Botanical Gardens
The Florida Botanical Gardens will
illuminate the holiday season with the annual Holiday Lights in the Gardens from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., November 28th through New Year’s Day 2015. On opening night, volunteers will flip the switch on the holiday season as the holiday tree in the Wedding Garden is lit. Visitors to the Holiday Lights in the Gardens can delight in more than 750,000 environmentally friendly twinkling LED lights. In addition to laser lights, flora and fauna displays and decorated trees, a seven-foot gingerbread house with more than 600 lights, a 3-foot tall white swan and a fivefoot tropical parrot have been added to the traditional array of light-lined paths with nightly free entertainment and visits from Santa Claus.
Nightly live entertainment will add to the holiday spirit, with dancing, music, singing and a host of entertainers. Santa Claus will be on hand at his appointed times. Since schedules are subject to change, a schedule of ongoing events will be updated online. Vendors will also offer a variety of gifts and goods, and The Botanical Bounty gift shop will be open each night. Refreshments will be sold, as well. Sponsored by the Florida Botanical Gardens Foundation, the celebration is free to children under 12, with a suggested donation of $4 per adult. Donations from last year’s event made this year’s event possible. The many helpers supporting the event each night are all volunteers, and additional help is always welcome. A Plant Sale will be held on Sunday,
December 14th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day-long special event in the formal gardens will feature vendors selling an assortment of plants, including orchids, hibiscus, iris, bromeliads, native plants, herbs and citrus. Specialty vendors will offer a variety of items perfect for gift giving, including unique clothing, outdoor items, select food items, crafts, jewelry, candies and more. The Botanical Bounty gift shop will also be offering its beautiful products. Free entry for visitors during the daylight hours. On Sunday, December 28th, at 1:00PM, the popular Dog Parade will have tails wagging. The Florida Botanical Gardens is located at 12520 Ulmerton Road in Largo. Free parking is available in the lot next to the gardens, at Heritage Village and at the offices of Parks and Conservation Resources/Pinellas County Extension. The entrances to the gardens will be open at these parking locations, as well as the east entrance at 12211 Walsingham Road, where handicapped parking is conveniently located.
