HAPPY ST. PATTY’S DAY! Certainly
not everyone’s Irish, but once a year, it may seem that way. At the very least, most people are very aware of St. Patrick’s Day as they celebrate the traditional Irish holiday each year. So, on March 17th, we will don a green shirt and hook up with friends at a local pub to thoroughly enjoy a brightly green colored brew. But how many people really know anything more than that about St. Patrick’s Day?

So, who was St. Patrick and why do we devote an entire day to him? Was he the Derek Jeter of saints? And what’s the story with this rock they have... what is it called? Oh, yeah, the Blarney Stone. Then, there are shamrocks, leprechauns and everything is green... what’s that all about? Like so many historical figures, truth is mixed with myth and legend and stories change over time. St. Patrick is believed to have been born in the late fourth century, and has been confused with Palladius, a bishop who was sent by Pope Celestine in 431 to be the first bishop to the Irish believers in Christ. According

There is no one story of how St. Patrick died. One story is that St. Patrick died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, on March 17, 460 A.D. His jawbone was preserved in a silver shrine and was often requested in times of childbirth, epileptic fits, and as a preservative against the “evil eye.” A second account says that St. Patrick ended his days at Glastonbury, England and was buried there. The Chapel of St. Patrick still exists as part of Glastonbury Abbey. Today, many Catholic places of worship all around the world are named after St.. Patrick, including cathedrals in New York City, Dublin, Ireland, and Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.
And what do they have to do with St. Patrick? According to Encyclopedia Britannica, a shamrock is “any of several similar-appearing trifoliate plants (plants whose leaves are divided into three leaflets). Common shamrocks include the wood sorrel (Oxalis acetosella) of the family Oxalidaceae, or any of various plants of the pea family (Fabaceae), including white clover (Trifolium repens) and suckling clover (Trifolium dubium).” According to Irish legend, St. Patrick chose the shamrock as a symbol of the church’s Holy Trinity because of its three leaflets bound by a common stalk. Wood sorrel is shipped in large quantities from Ireland to other countries for St. Patrick’s Day.
name Blarney is derived from the Irish an blarna, “the plain.” Blarney is home to the 90 foot tall Blarney Castle. The castle visited today is the third one built at the site and was erected in 1446. The castle was built on a rock, above several caves and the tower originally had three stories. On the top story, just below the battlements on the parapet, is the world famous Blarney Stone. While its origins are unknown, the Blarney Stone is said to give the gift of eloquence (beautiful speaking ability) to all who kiss it. Today, “Blarney” means “the ability to influence and coax with fair words and soft speech without offending.”
What is the Legend of the Blarney Stone and where did it come from? There actually is a village called Blarney. It sits just northwest of the village of Cork in Ireland. The

You must then lean back and down into the darkness between the castle’s 18 foot thick walls and, grasping the iron rails, lower yourself until your head is even with the stone.

In Ireland, almost all businesses close on March 17, with the obvious exception of pubs and restaurants. It is also a religious holiday. The Irish attend mass, and offer prayers for missionaries worldwide before the party begins.
Speaking of parties, the biggest St. Patrick’s Day party in America is in New York City.
In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick’s Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, “wearing of the green,” music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye their rivers or streams green!

Centuries of English rule largely eliminated the use of the ancient Gaelic, or Irish, language. Most Irish are either Catholics or Protestants. One theory of why St.. Patrick’s day is celebrated on March 17th
Rivaling the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade dates back fourteen years prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York was held on lower Broadway in 1762 by a band of
Page 18 immigrants who had fled their homeland. Throughout our history, the Parade has been held in honor of the Patron Saint of Ireland and the Archdiocese of New York. The Parade is reviewed each year from the steps of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral by the current Archbishop of New York in the same manner as the Archbishop of New York did in the early days of the Parade at the Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral in lower Manhattan.
MilPro Publications The Parade starts at 44th Street at 11 am and is held every March 17th except when March 17th falls on a Sunday; it is celebrated the day before, Saturday the 16th, because of religious observances. The parade marches up Fifth Avenue past St. Patrick’s Cathedral at 50th Street all the way up past the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Irish Historical Society at 83rd Street to 86th Street, where the parade finishes around 4:30-5:00 pm.
So, this March 17th, aside from that favorite green shirt and a bucket of green brew, take a moment to remember the history. And, by the way, a leprechaun is a type of fairy in Irish folklore, usually taking the form of an old man, clad in a red or green coat, who enjoys partaking in mischief. If captured, a Leprechaun has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for his release. So, if you’re in need of three wishes, start hunting now and who knows? Maybe you’ll get a green Ferarri this March 17th!

Clearwater... Expectations are a given if you’re a member of the Oak Grove Middle School Golden Knights basketball team. Three seasons ago, the team saw a 33 game undefeated streak come to a close in the third game of the season. But the Knights bounced back and finished that season off with consecutive victories and won the Division Championship again. The season before that, the team went 10-0 and won the Division Championship. The season before that... well, you’re starting to see the picture. A departure from that pattern occurred the last two seasons when the team went 6-4 both times. Those are respectable records for most teams, but let’s face it, Oak Grove is not most teams.

After two knockout wins, the Knights would face their first real test of the season as they headed to the land of the giants, the Morgan Fitzgerald Phantoms. Oak Grove would face not only a hostile environment, but a Phantom team that features the 6’4” and 6’5” twin towers.

The two teams played tight as Oak Grove held a six point lead at the half. In the third quarter, the Knights extended the lead to ten. The Golden Knights’ relentless full court pressure wore down the Hawks, holding Seminole to a mere five fourth quarter points en route to a 58-31 blowout. Max Jones dropped a game high 18 points and Daunte Asberry added 15 points as Oak Grove remained undefeated at 4-0. With just one Central Division opponent left, the Knights made the trek to Largo with a perfect record and some payback on their minds. Looking to avenge last year’s bitter defeat, Oak Grove jumped out to a 22-9 lead and never looked back, pounding the Tigers into submission. Max Jones caught fire, scoring 20 points, including three from behind the arch. Jones sat most of the second half as the Knight bench was emptied, making the lopsided win look closer than it was, 64-44. Ten Oak Grove players put points on the board. With the end of the season’s first half, Oak Grove had seen all the competition and beat ‘em all. Now comes the second pass and be assured that the other teams took notice of that undefeated record and would be making adjustments. The Knights started the second half of the season on the road, matching
MilPro Publications up with a much improved Osceola Chiefs. Apparently not improved enough as the Golden Knights jumped out to a dozen point first half advantage. Oak Grove continued to apply the pressure, increasing their lead to 18 points as the third quarter closed out. The fourth quarter would prove to be no help to the Chiefs as the Knights remained unbeaten with a solid 53-29 victory. Xavier Wahr and Max Jones had the hot hands for the Knights, scoring 17 and 16 points respectively. Michael Blake added eight points in the victory.

Possibly emotionally drained from the Morgan game, the Knights got more than they bargained for from a pesky Seminole Hawk team. Seminole refused to go away, trailing just six points at the half. The Knights put the pedal to the medal in the fourth quarter, out scoring Seminole 13-9 en route to a 52-39 hard fought victory. Michael Blake and Daunte Asberry each tallied 12 points for the victors, while Xavier Wahr, Max Jones, Trevon Sermon, and Alonzo Perry had nine, eight, six and five points respectively.
After the third quarter ended 4122, the Knights cleared the bench, playing all 18 players (which the team did 7 times this year), and held on for a 50-43 victory. Xavier Wahr once again led the way offensively with 14 points, while Daunte Asberry added 10. Ten players scored for Oak Grove. The Knights would get a second look at the only team to keep pace with them, Morgan Fitzgerald with that giant front court. The Knights had narrowly escaped with a four point victory earlier in the year, but shot a meager 24% from the line. You can bet the Knights spent some extra time on foul shots during practice that week. The Phantoms also were looking forward to this re-match and came to play. Like two boxers feeling each other out, they both played a tentative first quarter that ended

Daunte Asberry, Xavier Wahr, and Trevon Sermon scored ten, nine and eight points, respectively. Although not on fire from the line, the Gold Knights shot a respectable 41% from the stripe.
In the season finale, the Knights hosted arch-rival Largo. A dozen players scored as Oak Grove finished their unblemished season in style, routing the Tigers 51-31. Only time will tell how many games in a row this team will win. And will some of these players have the same experience as the 2013 team where no player on that roster had ever experienced an Oak Grove loss in their middle school career? Yes, only time will tell, but don’t bet against ‘em!

The auditioners (dancers, singers and actors) are trying to impress and make the final cut.

Objects from the Turner Family Permanent Collection Geraldine “Jere” Turner bequeathed her family home to Pinellas County along with $100,000 in moving costs and the contents of her 1915 bungalow. When it was moved to Heritage Village in January 2014, thousands of objects and archival materials spanning 100 years of family history were discovered in the house. These included toys and games, glassware and china, personal accessories, pottery, clothing, furniture, artwork and items from the Belleview Biltmore Hotel. It is one hundred and sixty miles door to door between my two destinations and since I do this pretty much weekly, I have the opportunity to experience many things that, as you might expect... cook my grits! First of all, why do people drive slower that the posted speed limit in the left hand lane? For one thing, it’s a safety hazard as the non-idiot drivers have to change lanes in order to pass these clueless drivers. Is it not written in the Florida State Highway Traffic Rule Book that you should drive ten miles per hour over the posted speed limit in the left hand lane? OK, so there
I also believe that if someone is driving at, or below, the posted speed limit in the left hand lane, we should have the right to make a citizen’s arrest, and maybe have a little “Move the heck over!” app on our iphones!
And since we’re on the subject, why do Famous Amos cookies cost a buck at the I-4 westbound rest stop and a buck and a quarter on the eastbound side? Don’t these people talk to each other? OK, so that’s not really on the subject, but it does tick me off, and isn’t that really the point here?

Signal” originated on that day in 1977. “As comets come closer to the sun, the heat melts them and they send out giant clouds of icy water. It creates a ‘halo of hydrogen’ around the comet. In just the right situation, there’s a chance that ‘halo of hydrogen’ could have given off the ‘Wow! Signal,’” said Paris, who serves as Director of Space Programs at MOSI and is also a professor at St. Petersburg College.

In 1977, an astronomer in Ohio spotted a blast of radio waves from space so powerful that he took the paper where the data was printed, circled the printout in red pen, and wrote “Wow!” The blast lasted 72 seconds -- and despite several searches, the “Wow! Signal” has never been heard again. Since then, scientists have ruled out signals from earth or satellites as the cause. Astronomers with SETI, the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence, which was made famous in the movie Contact, point to the signal as one of the most crucial signs that intelligent aliens may exist in our galaxy. But Antonio Paris has made a ground breaking discovery that could explain the mystery and disappoint humans hoping to hear from E.T. He believes comets may be the culprit. At the time, almost 40 years ago, no known comets were in that area of the sky. However, Paris used a NASA database to track back the paths of comets that have been discovered in the years since 1977, but weren’t known to exist back then.
There may be two chances soon to test his theory. One of the comets will be back in the same area of space in January 2017, and the other will be there a year later. Astronomers won’t be able to re-create the exact situation from 1977, when both comets were in the same area of the sky, but watching the two comets may give Paris and his colleagues enough information to conclude that they were probably behind the “Wow! Signal,” or that they can’t be the cause and the mystery continues. Paris lays out his findings in an article written with his colleague Evan Davies in the Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences, which was just printed and delivered to astronomers around the world.
