This year’s GCSE results were amazing with all the Babington students achieving the grades they needed to move on into Babington’s Sixth Form and other prestigious schools.

Emily was overjoyed to receive so many 9 grades saying “there are only 1000 grade 9’s in the county and I’ve got five of them!” The coveted grade 9 is the equivalent of a double starred A , and 7 equates to an A grade.

All the pupils exceeded their targets this year with 55% achieving grades 7-9 and 97% achieving grades 4-9.

At A Level, Babington students achieved 84% A* - C grades and 100% pass rate. The Mathematics students achieved 75% A* - A grades in Maths and Further Maths.

Florida is very much high up on most people’s bucket list, mainly due to the lure of the magical Walt Disney World however I can tell you that there is much more to Florida than Mickey Mouse! So, this year we thought right let’s do this, let’s take our boys away to Orlando. Having been lucky enough to have visited before, we wanted to explore more of what Florida had to offer. We flew to Orlando with Virgin Atlantic; it was a comfortable smooth flight. On-board entertainment kept the kids happy and with the many film choices we, were happy too.

We spent our first week doing all things Disney, it was, as expected, magical family fun, although very exhausting!!

Having walked an average of nine miles a day through crowds in a very hot and humid Walt Disney World, we were ready for more ‘less exhausting’ fun, how wrong we were!

Our second week was spent exploring the city of Kissimmee, known as the Vacation Home Capital of the World, and located only 10 minutes from Disney’s theme parks. Whilst in Kissimmee, we learnt how vast and varied, Florida’s wildlife is. The state has 44 species of snake! I found that out shortly before we left, thankfully! The most famous resident is of course, the gator, in fact there are 2.5 million of them roaming around. Where better to get up close and personal to a gator than the ‘alligator capital of the world’ Gatorland. On arrival our first stop was for some gator feeding. My kids absolutely loved feeding the young alligators some fish on a line. The gators jumped up and tore fish straight off with their powerful jaws! Shortly after we watched the Gator Jumperaroo show whereby the handlers fed the 8ft alligators with whole chickens. It was fun with laughter, met with mighty gators jumping high and snapping the chicken off the ropes. The fun didn’t end there, we meet a giant 300lb Galapagos tortoise named Lucy. She was a gentle giant; it was a wonderful experience to be able to feed her. There are numerous animal encounters available including the opportunity to hold a gator or a snake. But it’s not just about the animals, there are some exhilarating experiences such as zip-lining across the alligators on the Screaming Gator Zip Line; an off-road experience with the new Stormin Gator off road adventure and when you are all done with that, your little ones can cool off in the Gator Gully Splash Zone.

Our next stop was to explore the new Margaritaville Resort Orlando in Kissimmee, newly opened this year.

Although we were not fortunate enough to stay at the resort, we were fortunate enough to spend a day at the resorts water park Island H20 Live! This is the most technically advanced water park in Florida and by far the most unique water park we have ever visited. On arrival we were all given a smart band to link via the app on our smart phones. With these we were able to use the three sections: ‘Make my day’, where you can select music play-lists, your favourite colours, check wait times etc, ‘Family and friends’ section, this allowed for you to link with your family and friends, so that you find them and meet up throughout your visit. In this section you can also set parental controls and the Parks Perks section you can view what you can do to earn park perks and keep track of how many you have. While my sons enjoyed the thrills of the twenty water rides on offer, interactive games and experiences. However, for me (who is not so technically advanced) my favourite bit was relaxing on the lazy river. We found the whole day completely exhilarating with so much to offer, plenty of sunbeds available but if you wanted a touch of luxury there are cabanas available to hire!

We were now nearing the end of our holiday, time for one last day trip. For something entirely different we booked ourselves on an hour-long airboat ride with ‘Wild Florida’. Based on Lake Cypress at the head of the Everglades stands a renovated property, that feels like you are in the middle of nowhere. On site you can visit the gator park, animal shows and even have an animal encounter with Guy the sloth. The highlight of the day was certainly the airboat ride, our Captain welcomed us on board and gave us a quick safety brief. Ear mufflers on and we were away, zipping through the reeds, across the waters. We encountered lots of wildlife, our Captain was very knowledgeable answering all our questions. Finally, after about 10 minutes we had our first sighting of an alligator, shortly after our Captain took us to see an alligator’s nest. We were fortunate to see several alligators including one who was more than happy to swim alongside us until he disappeared into the reeds. This experience was by far our best!

This is a perfect sharing dish to serve at any gathering over the upcoming festive season. Simple to make, and impressive to look at you could also replace the pastry with bread dough, or experiment with any fillings you like – sweet or savoury love Nutella and banana too! For more information, recipes, cooking tips and classes visit www.thecookingshed.com Ingredients: Plain flour (for dusting) 2 x packs of 320g ready rolled puff pastry 3 tablespoons of cranberry sauce 200g brie (chilled until the last minute) 60g thinly sliced pancetta 1 medium egg Instructions: 1.

Sprinkle a fine dusting of flour on to a baking tray 2.

Lay out the first sheet of pastry on to the tray then spread over the cranberry sauce 3.

Thinly slice strips of the brie and lay on top of the cranberry sauce 4.

Add the strips of pancetta to the top of the brie 5.

Lay the second sheet of pastry on top and gently roll with a rolling pin to flatten 6.

Take a sharp knife and cut out a tree shape – then slice branches across from the middle – leaving a strip in the middle to keep it all together as the trunk.

7.

Take each branch and twist upwards twice – do this all the way up until the top triangle is left at the peak of the tree.

8.

Brush with egg wash (a mix of 2 parts beaten egg and 1 part cold water) 9.

Place in the oven on 180c (or gas mark 5) for 20 minutes 10.

When nicely browned and cooked through, remove from the oven and leave to one side to cool (be careful the cranberry sauce and brie will be extremely hot!)

Take a fish slice and carefully ease the tree from the baking sheet then slide on to a serving dish or board. Decorate if you wish with a few cherry tomatoes and small basil leaves to look extra Christmassy.
