Welcome back to Families Suffolk, I hope you all enjoyed some Halloween and Firework fun over the half term break. So here we are at the start of the Christmas term, with this issue we have tried to provide you with many Christmas ideas and events to ease any Christmas shopping headaches, whether it’s finding a gift, food item or just wondering what the kids can do whilst you’re shopping. Other than our Christmas pages we have all our regular pages for you to enjoy, Local News, Clubs and Classes News, Baby and Toddler Talk plus a new Business Spotlight feature on page 7 and on page 9 a feature on Small Business Saturday which highlights the reasons why we should support our local independent traders as much as possible this Christmas. Are you concerned that your child might be dyslexic? The Suffolk Dyslexia Association are a local Charity, based in Ipswich and run by a committee of volunteers. Their aim is to raise awareness of Dyslexia across Suffolk. The association are a registered charity and rely on fundraising to support their activities and are members of The British Dyslexia Association. The Suffolk Dyslexia Association provide a helpline offering information and support to anyone who wishes to find out more or has concerns regarding a family member. If like me you have younger children whose energy never seems to fall below full speed you may be interested to know Anglia Karting offer arrive and drive Kubz Karting fun for children aged 5 - 7 years. OTLEY PRE-SCHOOL NEWS The moment has arrived……….. Your little one is ready to leave the nest – at least for a few hours. Preschool awaits! Those crayons and pipe cleaners may look innocent enough, but how and where they’re introduced can have long-reaching ramifications. Preschool will help your child build confidence, social and cognitive skills, and provide a good transitional base between home and ‘big’ school. Otley Under Fives is situated within the grounds of Otley Primary School and opens term time Monday to Friday
between 9am until 3pm. Sessions are run flexibly and are accessible to all children; with a main playroom and an enclosed garden. The staff and committee were recently commended by Juliette Pearson, Early Years and Childcare Quality and Access Advisor for SCC on such a good outcome and report from Ofsted. Both Juliette and Ofsted commented on a new digging area, nicknamed ‘the chocolate factory’ by the children. This is a fabulous exploratory area with stones and buckets and whatever else the children need to make their chocolate cakes and paint!
After the thrill of an hours racing on the circuit, the fun continues in the party room, with birthday cake and soft drinks, party bags and the presentation of a medal for the birthday child. Is your child starting school or nursery in the next year or so? Why not get them used to being part of a structured class and interacting with other children in a fun and safe environment? Puddle Ducks
Puddle Ducks’ wonderful swimming programme delivers nurturing, fun classes to babies, toddlers and children. Classes can be enjoyed by babies from a few weeks until 4 years old. Due to high demand, new classes have been added on a Sunday afternoon. These will take place at our pool in Levington. This is a beautiful pool which is kept at a toasty 33 degrees! Little Kickers for little people.
Little Kickers classes are for children 18months to 5 years and are a fun way for the children to develop co-ordination, control, confidence and a feeling of camaraderie, all of which will help them in other areas of their lives. The classes are for both girls and boys. Do not worry; your toddler does not have to sit still for any length of time in these classes! The Little Kickers coaches are very used to parents saying that their child doesn’t concentrate very well so they are unsure if they would be able to get involved with the class. The answer is most definitely yes, the structure of the class and the coaching methods used in Little Kickers classes will more often than not actually help your youngster’s ability to concentrate in other environments whilst having loads of fun in the
sessions. The important thing like all activities with children is to make sure that parents are aware to try and persevere, attending a 6 week term is the best way to try your toddler in a class session and see any improvements made. How to... get your children to behave
Picture the scene. You’re at the supermarket and you’ve refused your child something that they want, causing them to freak out and scream loudly. You react by shouting back at them. Before long the situation is out of hand, with both of you at full-volume and people staring.
All kids will have a tantrum at some point, some simple steps can help to avoid this behaviour or at least lessen it. Trying a bit of distraction when the anger starts to build up - telling a joke, pulling a silly face - can be really effective. If it’s too late for humour, then take a deep breath and a mental step back. Is their behaviour really unreasonable? Can you just ignore it and carry on with your shopping? Maybe you have a spare few minutes to put the trolley aside and take them out of the situation? It could be either out of that aisle or maybe even out of the supermarket, where you can both calm down. Positive Parenting This approach may seem like pie in the sky when faced with a screaming 3-year old, but it’s never too early to try what the NSPCC calls ‘positive parenting’. If you show love and affection to your child and praise them when they are behaving well, they will associate getting attention with good behaviour. Active ignoring is encouraged, while physical punishments like smacking should be off limits: “smacking or biting back gives a very confusing message – that it is OK to use force or to hit physically when you are angry or to make a point.” So when you feel like you’re at the end of your tether, try to stay calm. After all, a toddler having a tantrum in the supermarket is one thing, but a screaming adult in the frozen food aisle? Not a good look…

Here are some hints from leading Clinical Psychologist, Professor Tanya Byron, on how to smooth out behavioural problems, and get the best from your child. Be positive One of the biggest mistakes we make as parents is to leave our children alone and say nothing to them when they’re behaving nicely. Ignore the behaviour you don’t want. Instead, emphasise the positive with cuddles, kisses, and praise, and tell them all the things they need to hear in order for them to understand they will get attention for doing things nicely. Distraction As soon as you feel the temper rising, distract them onto something else: a funny song, story, or ‘did you see that green squirrel with orange stripes just fly past the window?

Ignoring Ignoring gives the message that the behaviour gets no reward and if you use this technique alongside praising every lovely behaviour, your children will get a very powerful message. Time out First ask your child to stop misbehaving. If that doesn’t work, ask again, but more firmly. This gives the child two chances to change his or her behaviour, and if they do, you praise them. If they refuse to stop the behaviour, or if the tantrum escalates, you go for Time Out. Take your child firmly but with no attention to a safe place where you can leave them for a period of one minute for each year of their life (i.e. three minutes for a three-year-old) up to a maximum of five minutes. You should not talk to your child through the door or give them any other form of attention during the Time Out period. Once the Time Out period is over, explain to your child why they were Timed Out and then move on and praise them at the first opportunity. Tantrums Tantrums happen to all parents. They do not mean you are a bad parent. You can try to prevent them with praise and sticker charts. If that fails, you can try to distract the tantrums away. But once started, the best way to stop them is to ignore them. Remember: distract, ignore, but do not punish. Rewards At home, a sticker chart is a great way of encouraging good behaviour. Each time your child is good, give them a sticker. Naughty behaviour gets a ‘sad face’. Points mean prizes - enough stickers get them a treat. Positive example It’s straightforward but it works - your children will copy you. Swear and they will swear, smack and they will smack. Lead by example.

Two years ago we caused quite a stir with shoppers watching on as an army of runners in red Santa suits ran by. “The warm up on the Cornhill is a fantastic fun festive start to Christmas. It isn’t a race – you can run, walk, or jog – it’s up to you. It’s open to everyone and is suitable for all members of the family.

EACH relies on voluntary donations for the majority of their income and needs to raise almost £6 million to deliver their services this year – the equivalent of £16,000 a day, every day of the year. It’s more than a business to me, it’s about community, it’s about empowering women when they feel vulnerable and helping them find their own way in the world of motherhood. The fact that I never achieve my own work life balance – my office is at home and it’s too easy to just answer a few emails when I should be focusing on my own family. My husband has recently bought a caravan so that we can go to places without an internet connection! What was the best piece of advice you were ever given? You don’t have to have all the answers – baby class teachers should not be some kind of all - knowing oracle. Sometimes when you are talking to other mums it’s easy to say have you tried so and so – when in fact they just want someone to listen to them and hear what they say – a mummy will always know her baby better than anyone else – she just needs the confidence to realise that and to know in her heart to trust her gut instincts.

Lazy Daisy was created by Julie Long ten years ago – it was then taught by Shelley Brinkley and I joined Shelley two years ago to help increase the number of classes running locally. We are now in our 24th year Background as to why you started or took over the business and how the business has developed over time: The business was established by Keith Barton (my dad) & his previous business party in 1990. They looked to diversify from their other business. Both had an interest in motorsport and indoor karting was in its infancy in the country at the time. This year I have taken over as a Director in place of the previous business partner. Anglia Indoor Karting was one of the first indoor tracks in the country at the time. Initially the business was focused on corporate events but quickly the business developed to cater for the general public. The circuit has been developed into a dual level track, with a flyover and tunnel and now caters for drivers aged 5 and upwards. We are open 7 days a week 9am – 10pm What does the business have to offer families as a whole or individual family members: We can cater for all the family: We have a Kubz track for children aged 5 – 7, whilst older children and family members can experience the thrill of driving together on our main circuit which caters for age 8 and upwards (minimum height of 1.27m). Arrive and Drive sessions are available 7 days a week outside of corporate booking and can be booked 48hours in advance. We offer a ‘Happy hour’ for the under 16’s which runs from 4pm, Mon to Fri, in term or from 10am in the school holidays. Every Sunday under 16’s can take part in the Youth club from 9.30 – 11.30, where they will receive driving tuition from one of our experienced Race Directors. There is also the opportunity for Youth club members to compete in a 6 round championship which runs from April each year. Each holiday period we run Activity Days for the under 16’s which again helps young drivers
What does the future hold for your business? The future is bright – I will shortly be joined by four new teachers who are going to help spread the Daisy word all over Suffolk. We aim to make our classes more accessible so rather than just running classes in Ipswich and Woodbridge we will be able to get out to towns like Hadleigh and Stowmarket as well as further towards the coast like Felixstowe, Aldeburgh, Leiston and Framlingham. How do you fit your business around family life? I can survive on an incredibly small amount of sleep! I teach baby classes in the mornings, birthing classes two nights a week and I work at my desk most evenings – it’s really hard work but I do a job I LOVE and I am at the school gates every morning and evening. I get to watch tennis practise, go to swimming lessons and help with homework too! It also means I spend every afternoon with my toddler which I never would have been able to do in my old career. What advice would you give to any parents considering starting up their own business? Never underestimate how much time and work it will be. You can fit it around family and choose your hours but you will have to put in more hours than you did in your 9 – 5 job! It becomes part of your life, you live and breathe it – you have to have a total passion for what you are doing!

Shop locally this Christmas and give more than just presents... Christmas is upon us once again, and unless you are amazingly prepared and have bought all your presents already, there’s shopping to be done! The big retailers have been bombarding us for weeks, and you can rarely walk down the street or switch on the television without seeing adverts for this year’s Christmas must-haves. But what about the small, local, independent retailers?
The businesses which are owned and run by local residents, often parents who are trying to feed, clothe and support their own families. Small businesses easily get ‘lost’ in the hubbub of Christmas, when really it’s a time of the year when we should be using them just as much, if not more, than usual. Yes, the large supermarkets and online retailers can offer price savings, because they are big and they have bulkbuying power. But they don’t offer low prices to save you money, they offer them to make more profit for themselves, by offering loss leaders, or by negotiating lower prices from their suppliers, who then haggle with the manufacturers, who end up making smaller profits themselves, and sometimes even selling at a loss. But what about the things that the big businesses don’t offer? These are the things that small businesses generally excel at providing – handmade goods and locally produced items, indepth product knowledge and personalised advice, customer service, a friendly and enjoyable shopping experience. You may not get the lowest prices, but you do get excellent value for money. Added to all of this, when you buy local you are making an important contribution to your local economy. Spending money with local businesses causes a ripple-effect, as those businesses in turn spend locally, and on and on. Various research has been undertaken, with results showing that when £10 is spent in a local shop, between £16 and £50 goes back into the local economy, helping to improve local prosperity and create jobs. Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. In 2014 Small Business Saturday UK will take place on Saturday December 6th.

Support EACH and the Great Bear Giveaway This Christmas, Ipswich based companies GenR8 and The Bear Garden are working together to bring joy to children cared for by leading local children’s charity; East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
