How Early Learning Can Predict a Child’s Success

Y

ou may be surprised to learn that the long term effects of children learning language and maths skills at an early age is one of the greatest predictors of their financial success as adults. How can this be possible you may ask? With the many confounding variables such as a child’s IQ, formal education and socio-demographic background, it’s hard to believe that early reading or maths skills can be one of the most important factors associated with doing well as an adult.

However, a 2013 study from the University of Edinburgh1 shows that early maths and reading abilities have major long-term benefits.

Children who performed better in reading and maths tests at age 7 were shown to be more likely to earn higher wages later in life according to researchers. Children who had advanced by just one grade level in reading by age 7 earned an average of £5,000 per year more at age 42 than their classmates.

The study also concluded that “mathematical and reading ability at age 7 are substantially and positively correlated with

financial success at age 42, independently of relevant confounding variables.” In other words, it was the actual reading and maths abilities at age 7 – not just the child’s socioeconomic status, the child’s IQ, or other factors – that had a lasting impact on the person’s life chances.

Understanding Words Research consistently indicates that the earlier a child learns language skills, the better the long term outcome.

A well-known study in 19952 found that the number of words spoken to a child by age 3 was a better predictor of a child’s vocabulary at age 11 than the parents’ IQs, parents’ socioeconomic status, or which school the child attended.

A more recent study on the topic found that babies who learned more words by 18 months of age had greater vocabularies at age 3. In addition, the researchers found that 18-monthold babies who knew more words had faster brain processing speed. The study also concluded that the “language gap” that exists by 18 months of age would be hard to overcome, meaning that babies who had been taught fewer words in the first 18 months of life could have later delays in learning language skills3.

Early Reading and Maths Skills Reading problems at an early age are hard to counter-act later on in life. Very few children who cannot read at the appropriate level at the end of first grade ever catch up.

There are also significant advantages in learning to read early. Studies back in the 1960s concluded that children who were taught to read at ages 3 or 4 read better than children of the same IQ who were taught at ages 5 or 6. Those with the same IQs who were taught at ages 7 or 8 were even farther behind.

Six years later, the children who were taught to read earlier were still ahead of the same-IQ children who were taught later. In addition, the earlier the child was taught to read, the more likely the child enjoyed reading.

Parental involvement in teaching children about reading and writing words is also related to the development of early literacy skills. In turn, early literacy skills directly predict word reading at the end of first grade (age 6-7 years) and indirectly predict reading in third grade (age 8-9 years). Word reading at the end of first grade predicts reading comprehension in third grade.

So, if you are wondering how to give your infant a head start in life, it’s worth investigating the resources available to help you teach little ones language and maths skills as early as possible.

I didn’t belong in a group but I used to float around being everybody’s friend. The truth was: I didn’t know myself so how could I possibly know what sort of friend would be a good fit for me? Relationships are like making the pieces of a jigsaw fit together to reveal your own unique blueprint.

2. Introverted people tend to prefer one to one connections over groups.

Accept that your child may prefer not to have lots of friends (you may be an extrovert).

3. Being alone is not the same as feeling lonely. Some of us like to use

quiet time to recharge (see point 2).

When we feel lonely we have lost that all important connection with ourselves. We have stopped being our own best friend and we are running around trying to find it from something outside of us. It’s inside of us. I recommend daily meditation (you could try a free App like Calm.com) to spend some time with the ‘friend’ that you miss the most – yourself!

Clubs & Classes All Stars Cricket was launched in March 2017.

T

he programme has had an incredible first year with over 1,500 All Stars Cricket centres delivering the programme to over 37,000 kids. In addition, the end of year parent survey yielded very positive results with key headlines of 70% of families new to their local cricket club, 85% of parents want their child to return in 2018 and bring a friend!

All Stars Cricket provides boys and girls from 5 to 8 years old with an opportunity to become a star. The national curriculum of fun, cricket activities and games provides children with the basic movement skills to begin a lifelong love of physical activity.

The programme is a paid for product that has a RRP of £40, although this can vary across the Country. The cost includes the 8 week All Stars Cricket programme (1 x hour session per week for 8 weeks) and the pack; including a bat, ball, rucksack, cap and t shirt (personalised with their name) – all delivered to your door.

The pack also includes an Activity book that allows children and parents to engage with the programme using several weekly challenges to earn ‘star awards’ like bowling, catching, running, and teamwork.

The programme is delivered by trained volunteers who deliver game based activities that teaches basic cricket skills like catching,

Reasons to join: throwing, hitting a moving ball and social skills like team work and communication. Held at accredited cricket clubs these courses are a perfect way for children to learn about cricket and make friends in safe, and most importantly, fun environment.

Good Party Etiquette? Is there such a thing? By Andrew Campbell Whether you are throwing a party for your child or sending them off to their friend’s birthday celebration, finding your way around the do’s and don’ts of children’s birthday parties has become akin to navigating a war zone. Here we tackle a few of the thorny issues that seem to crop up every year.

Who gets Invited?

Your child has already been to three parties this year where the entire class was invited. But the thought of 30 small people bouncing off walls makes you break out in sweat. Remember “entire class” parties are your choice – you don’t have to give them just to keep other parents happy. The reality is that children WILL be happy with a small gathering so long as it feels special to them. Give invites to just their best friends and family and you’ll find the whole experience a whole lot easier.

Be Subtle about Invitations Who is and isn’t invited to a party is guaranteed to cause playground ructions, so be tactful. Unless you’re inviting the whole class, don’t start handing invitations out as the kids are lining up to go into

Be Sure to RSVP Planning a children’s party is stressful enough without having to chase people who haven’t replied. Replying promptly will earn you lots of gold stars with the party child’s parents, so just do it. And whatever you do, do NOT turn up on the day without RSVPing.

Check Before you Take Siblings Don’t assume no one will mind if a younger or older sibling tags along. When the entertainer has a strict limit on numbers and the party parents have worked out exactly how many fairy cakes they need, added extras can cause a real headache. Bring your friends and family and follow our Easter GIANT duck trail around our nature reserve to discover where they are hiding. You’ll need all your special detective skills to track them. Look up as well as down, our ducks like to perch above you sometimes. They also love splashing around, so they won’t be far from the water. The Easter extravaganza will celebrate the beauty of nature at Kew and encourage visitors of all ages to explore the wonderful world of vegetables and other edible plants, whilst learning about how they are grown.

Visitors can also pop into Kew's Kitchen Garden nearby, to learn about the fruit and veg grown by Kew's very own kitchen gardeners.

Visitors will follow a Peter Rabbit trail to find activity pop-ups for all ages. A trip to Mr. McGregor’s potting shed will encourage visitors to plant their very own seeds to take home and nurture.

Elsewhere, youngsters can choose which Peter Rabbit character they’d like to be for the day and make some fuzzy bunny ears to match.

What’s more, there will be a variety of delicious Easter culinary offerings available at the festival hub, as well as Peter Rabbit gifts and goodies available in the Kew shops.
