Local Children’s Literary Festival grows The Henley Children’s Literary Festival (HCLF) being held this September (29 September – 5 October) is now in its eighth year and has grown from just holding six events to 26. This year the festival will feature household favourites like Maisy Mouse, Hugless Douglas and the timeless classic We are Going on a Bear Hunt. You don’t have to pay for all the sessions, there are nine free events in the Town Square, where everyone can join in the fun. There are also events aimed at schools, which include First World War poetry and Shakespeare. Messy Monets Halloween Fun Day After the great success of their first Fun Day in Maidenhead last Easter, Messy Monets is holding a special and spooky Halloween themed Fun Day during October half-term in Windsor. Learning Coach helps with confidence Sarah Brazenor works with children and adults who are having difficulties in their learning environment (school/college/work). Education Special HOW TO CREATE A HEALTHY DIALOGUE WITH YOUR SCHOOL OR NURSERY By Hannah Hunter

Research shows that the better your relationship with your child’s school, the more they will enjoy learning and do well. owever it’s often impossible to know what really goes on at school – children are not very forthcoming when it comes to recounting their day. If they do raise any issues, or if you sense something is amiss, it can be difficult to know how to broach the subject with school. As both a parent and a primary teacher, I know how hard it can be to strike the right balance. If you’re meeting a teacher outside of parents’ evening or class surgeries, it’s because there is a problem. These meetings can easily become tense, with both ‘sides’ on the defensive.

Here are a few tips for successful communication: Assume the best of your child’s teacher. They are trained professionals who understand the curriculum and child development. They ultimately want the same as you – a happy child who is learning. Let teachers know if there are problems at home.You don’t have to go into graphic detail, just tell them if something’s happened which may affect your child’s behaviour. Please don’t assume that your child always tells the truth! After all, teachers don’t automatically believe what your child tells them about home. Remain calm and neutral, “Little Johnny came home rather upset about xxx, I wondered what your take on it is…”, rather than “Why did you shout at Little Johnny like that?” Don’t go it alone. If you have issues with a teacher’s conduct, and feel upset or angry, it’s best that an additional member of staff is present. Talk to the teacher first. Even negative feedback is appreciated. Going directly to the head is a bit like them phoning your boss whenever your child misbehaves! Remember that teachers are human. They sometimes make mistakes, so try to forgive them for it.

Helping out in school Get an insight into how things are run and improve your relationship with the school by volunteering. Parent Helper Helping out in class can be fun and rewarding. Research shows that having a parent who volunteers improves a child’s experience of school. Organise a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check (Disclosures in Scotland) - you can then volunteer regularly or as a one-off. School Trips If you’ve had the DBS check, this one is great for ingratiating yourself. On what is invariably a stressful day, a responsible parent helping out can be a lifesaver! Use your Expertise Maybe there’s a school club that would fit your skill set or interests. If not, you could talk to the class or even do an assembly. One volcanologist parent at my son’s school did a legendary presentation including exploding volcanoes. Join the PTA Fostering closer home-school links, the PTA usually organise the school’s fundraising projects, from fetes to family quiz nights. Run by committee, they may include ‘class reps’ who pass on information from other parents in the class. School Governors Comprising parent governors and other community members, this group of elected volunteers helps to make management decisions, such as running buildings and budgets, supporting staff and setting discipline standards. It can be time-consuming, particularly if the school’s results are getting worse or it’s going through a big change like appointing a new head teacher, or joining with another school. Parent Council member Some schools have a Parent council, where parents meet to share ideas that are fed back to the school governors. This is great if you’re too busy to commit to PTA or Governors, but want to have an input. Education Special Too Cool for School? By Natalie Trice Sweaty palms, new shoes, butterflies and shiny hair – and that’s just the parents on the first day of school. Starting, or changing school is a natural new chapter in the lives of children and whilst it is inevitable, many of us simply don’t feel ready for our babies to go out into the big world without us. Both of my sons are at primary school now and I admit that letting go was harder than potty training, puree making or dealing with sleepless nights, projectile vomit and endless coffee mornings talking about said issues. The reality check is that school is here to stay, so rather than digging your heels in and crying into your latte, follow my ‘been there, done that and got the t-shirt’ tips and those six precious hours which will be gone faster than you can say coffee, Pilates and Waitrose. Make it fun. From a trial morning, working out your route to school, spending time with other newbies in the holidays to choosing school shoes and labelling uniform, show them that this is an exciting adventure and they are going to have a great time. Going back to the Gina Ford days – have a routine. We live five doors from school but still set the alarm, do breakfast then uniform and teeth last so you don’t have to change. Make lunches the night before saving a last minute rush.

If you can, do a little bit of work on basic life skills. I am not talking about cooking a three course meal but ensuring they can change their clothes for PE, they know when they need a wee and how to unwrap their lunch – the more independent they are, the easier it will be. Now, a word about uniform. It will go missing, holes will appear, mud and whiteboard pen will stain it, so don’t be precious about it. Label EVERYTHING, have one good set for school photos, assemblies, and trips to the head, but don’t spend hours ironing tiny shirts and Skylander pants, what’s a crumpled sweatshirt between friends? Do not cry. Give a hug and kiss (make the most of them allowing this), hand over bags, wave and smile but do not let your child start their first day knowing mummy is sad.You’re the grown up so grin like a loon on the playground, if you must wear dark glasses, keep it together and blub in the car. But really, you are a big girl, aren’t you? However, if they cry, again go for big mummy hugs, tell them you love them and they are going to have a wonderful day. Then be brave, have faith that the staff know what they are doing and the tears will stop the moment you walk out of the gate. I will let you know if I do this with my five

year old when he starts a new, bigger school this September. Just like uni, don’t sign up for anything until you know how the land lies.Yes smile and be friendly but step back and watch, make good choices and whatever you do, don’t sign up to be a Governor or PTA secretary when you are vulnerable on day one. Whilst it is fun to have playdates (who invited that awful word?) and let little ones do afterschool activities, don't overload them or they will be too exhausted to deal with the matter in hand - school. Most of all, try not to stress. Kids tend to be more adaptable than us and for them this is just the next step in their little lives and one they should be embracing and loving with the help of calm, kind parents. Can tutoring help your child?

Paying for extra tuition has become very popular over the last few years. According to a poll last year by the Sutton Trust, nearly one in four 11-16 year olds at state schools in England and Wales said that their parents had paid for them to have extra help with their lessons.

o should you hire a tutor? If you don’t, will they be at a disadvantage when it comes to tests like the 11+ or Common Entrance exam, if everyone else seems to be sending their children for extra lessons? Why get a tutor? With stress on getting good grades now starting at KS1 and 2 with SATs, children are expected to achieve from a very young age. Schools cannot provide the one-toone support, which can provide valuable help in some instances. If a child is struggling with a subject area, or missing knowledge that is holding them back (e.g. after time off school), then a tutor is a great idea. If your child has additional needs, like dyslexia or ADHD, a tutor can provide valuable targeted support (if they have a statement, your child may be entitled to one-to-one support in school). Perhaps your child is having trouble getting the C-grade in Maths/English GCSE that they need for further education. Maybe they want to study a subject not offered at their school. Interview preparation for University is also a popular reason to hire a tutor, particularly for Oxbridge interviews. However, if their problem is lack of motivation, then a tutor might not be the best idea – if they don’t want to work, you’re just wasting your money! Tutoring very young children can also be a problem – they can be so tired after a full school day and adding tutoring on top can wipe them out completely. There’s a lot of pressure on high achievers too - if they are doing well at school, why add needless stress?

When is it best to get help? It’s best to start sooner rather than later. For example, if you’re hiring someone to help after the GCSE mocks in February there’s a limited amount they can achieve if you think tuition will benefit your child, start from September of Year 11 onwards. How to find a good tutor If you can get someone who is personally recommended, then obviously that is the best option. Make sure you check their references and DBS checks, and interview them before you hire them. It sounds obvious, but they need to get along with your child, as well as looking good on paper. Study centres and tuition agencies will ensure that their staff are safety checked and appropriately qualified, with some agencies only employing graduates in key subject areas. How much will it cost? According to the good schools guide, an hour’s tuition can cost parents anything from £30 to well beyond. If this is beyond your budget, you could team up with friends for group tuition. Study centres may be more affordable - children learn in small groups, and they often accept childcare vouchers toward payment. For example, Explore Learning centres cost between £98-119 per month for 2 sessions a week, with reduced fees for siblings. Help for Free Your child’s school may already offer older revision classes – make sure you’re aware of what’s available. There are excellent online resources to support at home learning – for example the BBC bitesize website has games and revision subjects up to GCSE level. Perhaps you know someone who is a teacher, or has language or music skills, who may be able to informally help your child – you could do a childcare swap or similar in lieu of payment.

Highfield offers a wealth of opportunities for girls Marist Pupils’ Technicolour Performance of Joseph The three Year 6 classes at The Marist Preparatory School in Sunninghill went out with a bang at the end of the school year with their colourful and vibrant production of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’. This ambitious production used all 52 students in a variety of roles, with Elyse Airey playing Joseph and Catherine Abela, Grace Haworth, Jessica Pratley and Genevieve Fieldhouse as narrators. Fleur Lewis made a convincing Elvis in her role as Pharaoh, and the chorus of brothers did their evil scheming with aplomb. Accompanied by a live band, the girls had a professional lighting and technical team to ensure that they looked and sounded their best and this professional looking production showcased what a talented year group they are. Headteacher, Jenny Finlayson said: “I am immensely proud of each and every cast member. The girls together with Head of Music, Amy Bingham and Alexis Cheesman, Drama Teacher have worked phenomenally hard. New Head of Nursery for Godstowe Little Godstowe, the nursery based in the grounds of Godstowe Preparatory School, has appointed a new Head of Nursery. Mrs Sara Ramery will take up her new position this September, taking over from Mrs Pauline Felt who is moving to Pre-Prep. Education News By Hannah Hunter & Claire Winter Launch of free school meals for all infants From September all Reception,Year 1 and Year 2 children will be entitled to a free and healthy lunch at school. According to Schools Minister, David Laws, free school meals encourage healthy eating and their pilots have shown that ‘children in schools that offer universal free school meals are academically months ahead of their peers.’ The move has been welcomed by the Child Poverty Action Group who campaign for the abolition of child poverty in the UK. Alison Garnham, Chief Executive, commented: ‘The cost of bringing up children is rising faster than headline inflation, so a policy like this that saves families hundreds of pounds is going to be a big help.’ To find out more visit www.childrensfoodtrust.org.uk

Shanghai-style maths hubs aim to improve standards in England The government’s £11 million programme of ‘maths hubs’ will be rolled out to 32 schools in England this September, aiming to improve maths results by using a Chinese model of teaching. The programme is to be developed by academics from Shanghai and England. Central to this will be an exchange programme, where teachers from Shanghai will visit the ‘hub’ schools to run ‘masterclasses’ for local teachers. Two maths teachers from each school will also work in China for at least a month to learn first-hand some of their teaching approaches, which will then be passed on to other local schools. Claires Court says farewell to colleague after 27 years At the end of the summer term Claires Court Junior Boys said farewell to a Head teacher and colleague of 27 years. Jeff Watkins joined Claires Court in the Senior Boys division in 1985 as an English teacher, before transferring to Junior Boys as deputy in 1988. He has been Head of Junior Boys for the past 3½ years. Under his leadership the school has become a powerhouse of sporting provision for U11s as well one where pupils achieve the highest levels of academic and personal attainment. Jeff stands aside at time when the future for the School is exciting and challenging, thanks to a recent glowing inspection report and Claires Court’s ambition to move the School on to one site. He leaves his legacy in good hands though, passing the mantle to Justin Spanswick, his deputy for the past 3 years. Having worked for 17 years in both primary and secondary education in the private sector, with 6 years of senior leadership experience, Justin is well known to existing pupils and parents. He said: "I am really looking forward to leading Junior Boys and our next generation of happy, caring and confident boys. I feel that we have such a friendly and nurturing environment at Claires Court which gives every pupil the opportunity to fulfil their academic, sporting and creative potential. Whether or not you reckon you might be raising the next Picasso or David Beckham, there’s no doubting the pluses for after school clubs. rom ballet to basketball and art to archery, there’s an after school activity out there for every child. And the best thing about them is they’re brilliant for all sorts of reasons – not just learning a new skill. For a start, after school clubs give kids the chance to let off steam outside of the classroom. When you consider that in many countries around the world, kids don’t even start school until 6 or 7 years old, a full day in the classroom for youngsters can be a big ask. That’s why an alternative to the three R’s can be hugely rewarding. As clinical psychologist Dr Julie Fraser, puts it: “It’s an opportunity for kids to explore different talents. Not everyone is brilliant at academic subjects and it’s a chance for your kids to shine outside of the classroom.” She adds: “Learning a new skill can also affect what happens in school – kids feel more confident and able to try new tasks.” Certainly all the research shows this to be the case. Every leading study into extra curricular activities demonstrates that academic

grades actually improve when kids participate in outside school clubs. One 2005 study from the US actually showed that kids who attended clubs performed much better in maths and verbal reasoning tests than kids who didn’t. But kids clubs are not only great for improving academic levels but for developing important life skills too. “It’s brilliant for developing social skills, dealing with new environments, talking to different adults and mixing with different children,” says Dr Fraser. “But best of all, after school clubs are confidence building.” Team sports like football, rugby, and netball

are not only brilliant for keeping kids active but also helping them learn team work where they can begin to appreciate what’s good for the whole team, rather than just thinking of themselves. Competitive sports are also great for learning difficult life lessons like being a gracious winner - and loser. But for team building clubs with a less competitive edge, you could consider Woodcraft Folk, Brownies and Scouts. Learning a musical instrument is great for discovering the art of practice, patience and persistence. Drama clubs are great for shy kids who learn to find their voice singing and acting alongside others, while ballet and dance is great for kids to learn discipline and self-expression. There’s so many to choose from, it’s tempting to try them all but it’s also important not to overburden kids with too many activities. Frantically driving from one after school club to the next seems to be missing the point. New skills, team work and confidence building aside, the most important thing to think about when deciding which club to choose is surely the fun factor. Clubs & Classes News Local Gymnastics Club expands Old Windsor Gymnastics Club was established under a year ago in October 2013 and has grown from just two children to over 80 attending lessons each week. The club offers recreational and developmental gymnastics classes for children from 4-16 year olds. British Gymnastics Coach Anna Linklater formed the club. Her main aim is to introduce children to the wonderful world of movement through gymnastics, which in turn creates a positive attitude towards physical activity. Gymnastics provides a solid foundation for overall fitness but also helps develop coordination, flexibility, strength and balance. The children are coached on the bars, beam, floor, vault, airtrack and trampette and have the opportunity to follow the British Gymnastics Award Scheme, obtaining certificates and badges as they progress. Old Windsor Gymnastics Club offers gymnastics classes that are fun and interactive for beginners and also for those students who have a background in gymnastics. New Phonics class for under-5s Phonics Fun is a new pre-school activity class coming to the Bucks and Berks area in September 2014. It is an exciting, engaging multi-sensory class delivered by an experienced primary school teacher. Phonics Fun commissioned an illustrator to develop loveable characters for each sound and letter. Each session introduces the children to a new sound with these characters accompanied by related stories and actions. The children participate in lots of fun games and activities based on the sound, creating memorable and active learning experiences. Maidenhead Zumbini classes take off Zumba Instructor Niki Kitt’s Zumbini classes have been so popular that she is planning to set up more classes in Marlow. At the moment she is teaching Zumbini, for 0 to 3 year olds and their Mums in Maidenhead. If you love Zumba, you’ll love Zumbini. The 45-minute classes include dancing to some great tunes, play movement, fun props and the chance to play instruments. Niki, a former professional singer and West End performer says, “It’s a completely different kind of music and movement class using Zumba-style music that is fun for the little ones and the adults. Music Matters classes are very active and child centred. Musical concepts are introduced through songs and games and all the music is live — no CDs! Magic Muffins

Get Cooking!

With an increasing focus on the amount of refined sugar that children eat, these healthy muffins are sure to go down a treat with cake lovers. They will also be great in any child’s lunchbox. With thanks to Beverley Glock Cookery School. These muffins are delicious and ever so slightly healthy, thanks to the addition of bananas, wholemeal flour and no sugar. Now you know what to do with those bananas that are too ripe for anyone to eat! Ingredients: for 12 Muffins • 100g self raising flour • 125g wholemeal self raising flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 100g plain chocolate chips • 2-3 very ripe bananas • 2 tbsp agave syrup • 175ml milk 75ml sunflower oil • 1 egg You will need: Weighing scales, Medium mixing bowl, Wooden Spoon, Teaspoons, Sieve, Measuring jug, Plate, Fork, 12 Hole muffin tin, Wire rack, An adult helper. How to make Chocolate Banana Muffins 1. Ask an adult to preheat the oven onto 200oc/gas 6 and put a shelf onto the centre runner (AGA Roasting oven - shelf on oven floor). 2. Sift the flours into a bowl with the baking powder. Add the chocolate chips and stir to mix.

3. Peel the bananas and mash them with a fork. Measure the agave, milk and oil into a measuring jug, add the egg and whisk lightly. 4. Add the wet ingredients and mashed bananas to the dry ingredients. Mix well. It won’t look like normal cake mixture, it will look very lumpy, it’s meant to look like this, DO NOT try to beat the lumps out. 5. Put 12 muffin cases into the muffin tin. Using two teaspoons, divide the mixture evenly between the 12 muffin cases. 6. Ask an adult to put the bun tray into the centre of the oven. Bake for 15-20 minutes until they are pale golden brown. 7. Ask an adult to take the muffins out of the oven and lift them onto the wire rack to cool. These are lovely eaten warm or they will keep for 2-3 days in an airtight container.

GO BATTY MAKING SOME SPOOKY DECORATIONS

Halloween

Have fun with a few simple art and craft activities, which will transform your home into a witch’s cavern or haunted house this Halloween.

Create lanterns, flying bats and bunting or make a scary, floating ghost by wrapping a piece of white material or a white bin bag over a balloon and drawing on a spooky face. For a Halloween feast, or tea party, use a paper plate and some card shaped into a cone to make a witch’s hat as a table decoration. Add a lantern and some creepy treats to create the perfect setting for a spooky supper! See below for a great decoration idea. Spooky Bat Make this Toilet Tube Bat to decorate your house or to take to a party! Una Fagan from Happy Potter Ceramics (www.happypotterceramics.co.uk) tells us how. Materials and Instructions You will need a toilet roll tube, black poster paint, black card, scissors, string, sticky tape, coloured poster paint or goggly-eye stickers Fold the top of the tube inside to create

two points making ears. Then, turning the tube sideways, do the same again to create a point at the bottom making the shape of a bat’s body. Once folded, paint the whole toilet roll tube in black poster paint for a really scary bat look. Take a piece of black card and fold it in half, then draw two small curves at the bottom to create spiky bat wings. Cut this into shape. Fold the piece into a concertina zig-zag shape to give the wings lots of body and make some scary shadows. Cut two small holes on each side of the tube where the wings should go, then thread the folded wings through. Open up the wings and fold them into shape. Add some spooky eyes with paint or goggly-eye stickers. Tape some string to the back, and get ready to scare all of your friends with your frightening hanging bat! Health Noise... how much is too much? What is an acceptable noise level for children, and how long should they listen to loud sounds? Hearing specialist Lucinda Ellis gives a guide to the possible risks to your child’s hearing. he ears naturally protect the cochlea by the stapedius muscle. This is a muscle in the middle ear that contracts when a loud sound is heard, protecting the hair cells in the cochlea from becoming damaged. However, loud noises, especially for a continued amount of time, can cause permanent hearing loss as the muscle becomes weaker and isn’t able to work as well. Everyone has a different susceptibility to loud noise but these are the common guidelines: the louder the sound, the less time you can listen to it before it damages your hearing. After listening to loud music some people get a temporary threshold shift where the hearing is temporarily reduced and/or tinnitus (ringing in the ears) - these are both warning signs that the noise could be damaging the hearing. Sound is measured in dB and most sounds over 85dB can be damaging. A whisper is 30dB, normal speech 60dB and a pneumatic drill 100 dB. It’s difficult to measure noise without proper equipment but as a general guide if you have to raise your voice to speak to someone 2 metres away the sound is probably damaging your hearing, so either use noise protection or move away from the noise. Even musical instruments get too loud especially in poor acoustically designed rooms:

Some children under the age of 18 are losing some of their hearing because of the over use of ipods, personal music players and going to loud gigs and festivals. The maximum volume of an ipod shuffle has been measured at 115dB. Researchers have decided that listening to music with headphones at 60% of the maximum volume is safe for one hour

Work Parents’ Rights The many different rights to leave for parents can be difficult to understand, and won’t get any easier when Shared Parental Leave is introduced next year. The Prolegal Employment Team explains the different types of leave, who qualifies and what rights there are to pay during leave. Maternity leave Mums have the right to up to 26 weeks of ordinary maternity leave (OML) and a further 26 weeks additional maternity leave (AML), no matter how long she has been with her employer. To qualify, mum must tell her employer the date she wants to start her leave before the end of the 15th week before she is due to give birth. The first two weeks after birth are compulsory maternity leave, when she is not allowed to work. Qualifying employees are entitled to a maximum of 39 weeks statutory maternity pay (SMP). For the first six weeks mum should be paid 90% of her salary; the remaining 33 weeks are paid at either the statutory rate of £136.78, or 90% of her average gross weekly earnings if this is lower. The statutory rate will rise to £138.18 on 6 April 2014. Check your company maternity policy because some employers offer enhanced maternity pay. Terms and conditions of employment continue during maternity leave, except in respect of pay. Mum should continue to get her non-cash contractual benefits such as medical insurance. Holidays accrue during maternity leave and can be taken before or after leave but not during. Mum has the right to return to the same job after OML. After AML, employers can offer a suitable and appropriate alternative if it is not practical for mum to return to the same job. Paternity leave Dads, or mum’s partner, are entitled to two weeks’ Ordinary Paternity Leave (OPL) paid at £136.78, rising to £138.18 on 6 April 2014. Many employers offer this at full pay. Although most men choose to take the leave as the baby is born, it can be taken at any time within 56 days of the birth. To qualify, dad must have had at least 26 weeks’ service 14 weeks before the due date. If dad qualifies for OPL he is also entitled to APL, if he working for the same employer as he was when he took OPL and mum goes back to work. APL cannot be taken until baby is 20 weeks old and no later than baby’s first birthday. Dad is entitled to the unexpired portion of mum’s SMP, paid at the same rate. Parental leave Both parents are entitled to take up to 18 weeks unpaid parental leave before their child is five. The leave is calculated in respect of each child, so a parent of two children could take up to 36 weeks. Leave must be taken in blocks of a week and can be limited to 4 weeks per year. Employers can postpone the leave for up to 6 months where the business would be unduly disrupted. To qualify for leave, employees must have been with their employer for at least a year. Leave can move between employers, so for example if you had taken six weeks leave and got a new job, you could take up to 12 weeks in that new job once you had been there for a year. Dependants leave All employees are entitled to a reasonable amount of unpaid leave to deal with dependants who are ill or injured. The leave is also available to cope with unexpected disruption of childcare or to deal with an incident at school.

Shared parental leave There has been much publicity around Shared Parental Leave, which will be available to parents of children born after April 2015. Parents will be able to share 50 weeks’ leave after the two week compulsory maternity leave. They can take leave in consecutive blocks or at the same time. They can even ask their employer for leave in non-continuous blocks, though employers will have the right to refuse this. Maternity and Paternity pay will remain at current levels. To qualify, employees must have 26 weeks’ service 14 weeks before the baby’s due date. Both parents must meet the “economic activity test”, i.e. they must have worked for at least 26 of the 66 weeks before the baby is born, and have earned at least £30 per week for at least 13 of those weeks. Bumps ‘n’ Babes COPING WITH SLEEP DEPRIVATION IN THE FIRST THREE MONTHS By Lyndsey Hookway

Lack of sleep: you've read about it, you've heard about it, but nothing prepares you for dealing with the exhaustion that comes with having a very young baby!

If you use some of these ideas, you’ll prevent a lot of problems later and set up some early positive sleep habits!

Music with Mummy he first three months of your baby’s life is commonly known as the fourth trimester, because your newborn is adapting to life outside the womb. It's hard for babies to make this adjustment, which is why it’s useful to adopt some strategies to help them. Don't forget –a five hour stretch of sleep for a newborn is the equivalent of sleeping through the night, so don't expect too much of them!

Here are ten simple strategies to help you set up some good sleep habits. Enjoy your Baby Having your baby close actually fosters independence, not clinginess. If you meet your baby's biological need to be close to you in the early days, you build trust and confidence. Establish Feeding It’s much easier to create good sleep habits if feeding is working. If you are breastfeeding, allow frequent unrestricted feeding in the first two to three weeks to set up your milk supply. Feed your baby frequently in the evening (cluster feeding) regardless of how they are fed. This 'tanks' them up for the night. Try a dreamfeed. This is a feed which takes place in the night, whilst your baby is still half-asleep and prevents your baby waking from hunger. It also avoids programming your baby to associate waking with the “reward” of a feed. Rocking, Feeding or Holding to Sleep If your baby needs to be rocked, fed or held to go to sleep, don't worry, but put them down as soon as they are asleep so they don't get used to it. If they stir when you put them down, just pat or shush them gently in their crib. Understand What’s Normal As a general rule, babies under 3 months cannot tolerate being awake more than one to two hours. The sleep cycle of a

baby is between 30 and 40 minutes. If your baby always wakes after one cycle, try going to them just before they usually wake and patting or shushing gently to help them transition gently into another sleep cycle. After about 2 weeks of this, they should be used to taking longer naps and you should be able to offer less intervention. Introduce Background Noise Constant background noise like a fan or white noise works wonders for helping babies who startle and wake at sudden noises. Teach your Baby the Difference Between Day and Night Start your day at the same time every day. Pick your wake up time, and dress your baby for the day, open the curtains and don't restrict noise. Twelve hours later, dress your baby for bed. Introduce a Bedtime Routine This can be very simple and include quiet playing, night clothes, song or story, massage, bath, feed, followed by bed. Learn Your Baby's Sleep Cues These can include yawning, rubbing their eyes, pulling their ears, fussing, and losing interest in their surroundings. Put them down at the first sign of tiredness.

Mums Who Mean Business Local business Mummy’s Maid Ltd are celebrating their fourth birthday this year, we caught up with Clare Nickless, the Regional Business Manager. Who you are and where do you live? I’m Clare, married to Duncan and mum to five-year-old Emilia and Isabella, who is two. I’m originally from Cheshire, but have also lived in the States, and we’ve been living in Thame for the last four years. Why have you changed career? Like many people, having a child makes you reassess your options. I was keen to return to work, but with a minimal impact on my family. Mummy’s Maid Ltd have offered me a truly flexible work option that I’ve never experienced before – I’m able to work in the evenings once the kids are in bed and just check for urgent emails and calls during the day. (a first for me!), she took her son and I took my youngest daughter – a little unconventional but it worked out really well; at the end of the day it’s all about getting the job done the best way that you can. What did you used to do? Before joining the Mummy’s Maid Ltd team two months ago, I’d worked within the pharmaceuticals industry in various areas – the skills I learnt there, such as customer focus and excellent organisational skills, I’ve been able to use at Mummy’s Maid, and these are skills that we look for in all of our employees. What are your plans for the future? Since Kez Luckett started up the company four years ago with the idea of helping mums by making their lives easier, the business has grown and grown to now include nine separate services – from cleaning to childcare – and if we don’t have a package to cover a client’s needs, we’ll specially tailor a service for them. I’m in charge of managing work in my area on a dayto-day basis, as well as initial client consultations, recruitment, promotion and advertising. We’re now planning to expand the business further within Buckinghamshire and the Thame area, looking at new areas such as developing the ‘Mummy’s Maid Ltd Training Academy’ to enable our employees to develop their full potential and provide an even better service to our clients, partnering with other businesses to enhance both their and our services, and continuing to build on the company vision through advertising and promotion, all with the aim of being ‘the number one provider of essential homemaking services to busy professionals – making life easier’. Who are you and where do you live? I am Marinela (Maryam) Caldarus and I recently moved to Langley with my husband Ovais Shamsuddin and my one year old, Hamza. Why did you set up the business/or why have you changed career? I always loved to be independent and to work on my career. But after marriage and having my baby, my priorities have changed. I didn’t want to go back to my job and miss the most important stage of my son’s development, but my passion for art and teaching was still there. So I decided to start my own business. This way I can spend time with my baby and develop my business ideas (of course with the support of my husband). What did you used to do? I was an Art Teacher and Artist. I had a very successful collaboration in Romania with Medieval Art Production where we used to promote medieval themed art and festivals across the country. We held many art camps, collaborating with the National Museum of Romanian History, Bran Castle in Transylvania, where Count Dracula’s legend is based, as well as endless medieval art festivals. As an artist my biggest accomplishment in the UK was to be shortlisted for Artist of the Year in 2011 in Artists and Illustrators magazine, in the section Still life.

What inspired you to set up the business? With my experience in the art field, I decided to share my knowledge and compress the different ideas into a business. Being a new mum gave me the advantage of extra spare time, so by working hard, day and night, my business has started to prosper quickly. In one year my achievements are: private art classes for adults and kids in Slough; providing art competitions for children at a number of fairs, and a pilot project with Slough Borough Council and Chalvey Community Centre, making art with children from the Chalvey community, which will hopefully lead to similar projects. What are your plans for the future? My plan is to promote more art classes, events and festivals in the Slough area. I am working on finding sponsors and funds so I can provide free art classes on a regular basis for children and families who are interested in art but can’t afford to pay for private tuition. For the moment I am working with Slough Borough Council on some pilot projects in Cippenham, Chalvey and Langley and hopefully we will find more sponsors to continue the projects and to cover other areas. Another project that I already started is The Art Camp, for the moment only during the summer. Each week there are organised park visits where everyone can enjoy a picnic, learn about landscape painting, and have a chance to meet new friends. At the end of the art camp there will be an exhibition with the best art works selected. Who you are and where do you live? I’m Diana Page, a mum working from home based in Oxfordshire. Why did you set up the business/or why have you changed career After 15 years in the corporate world, I came to a natural crossroads when I started my family 13 years ago.
