ISSUE 29 JULY-AUGUST 2012 ®

Hi there, The Jubilee celebrations have created a holiday atmosphere and July’s Olympic Torch run and the Box Hill cycling race are adding to it. Camp for a roadside view (see below)! With summer holidays around the corner we’ve collected not only the best holiday activities on our Camps and Courses pages (21-23), but also put together a list of nursery providers offering all-day care during the school summer holidays (8-9) – just in case your child-minder goes away or your nursery closes at end of term. Summer’s outdoor activities are here in abundance and, as the importance of ‘being in nature’ is better understood, we support initiatives that encourage getting out and exploring (see pages 12-15). Our understanding grows in other areas, too. See how your child’s ‘stem cells’ can help the whole family and how many pregnancy-related woes can be alleviated with a special form of massage (pages 6 & 7). Best wishes for a wonderful summer. Deep in the woods, in locations across Surrey, hidden woodland camps are growing. During the holidays you’ll find groups of children busily engaged in mud sculpturing, building dens or whittling; in the distance excited shouting shows that the shrimping expedition has had some success, while the muffled sounds of a stalking game filter through the trees. “They came back like something out of Swallows and Amazons!” said one delighted mother as her children returned from a day of adventure with Wild learning. The next Wild Learning holiday clubs run through the summer holidays. The Gatton Park Camps are 6th - 31st August. Family Days are also available. Play On in Woldingham!

Saving food – and money

Jay Aston from Buck’s Fizz came to mark the new installations at Glebe Playground in Woldingham in May.

Cutting down on food waste can be a challenge, especially when you’re pushed for time and your kids don’t always want to eat what you’ve cooked for them. So to help you waste less, Surrey County Council’s food waste campaign provides helpful tips on how to plan your meals, perfect the right portions, store correctly and use up leftovers.

A £9,500 grant from the Big Lottery Fund funded the purchase and installation of the climbing frame. In total Julie and Denise raised £27,600, all of which has now been spent on the playground. The Glebe area as a whole – including the cricket green, football pitches, pavilion, tennis courts, playground and rural space for dog walking, is maintained by Craigmyle Glebe Limited, a registered charity. Offers of volunteering or future donations for this project are gratefully received. woldingham.com/clubs/playground.htm

Good UK beaches get better This year’s Good Beach Guide, launched online by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), has recommended 516 out of 754 (68%) UK bathing beaches tested last summer as having excellent water quality – that’s 8% more than last year and the best in the Guide’s 25-year history. Babies and Toddlers

Saving your child’s hidden assets Stem cells, which exist in bone marrow, the baby’s umbilical cord and tooth pulp, are never far from the headlines these days, as medical research reveals more possible ways in which they can help to heal us. Capturing your family’s own stem cells is a form of biological insurance for the future.

What are stem cells?

Stem cells multiply and differentiate into the cells that make up our blood, bones, tissues and organs. They build new tissue from scratch but can also restore and repair tissue as we grow. These vital cells are now being used to treat more and more medical conditions. It is now standard medical practice in many countries to use stem cells for a range of blood cancers and immune disorders. Researchers are now looking at how they can treat Type 1 diabetes, Cerebral Palsy, heart disease and, most recently, hearing loss. Until recently, bone marrow has been the main source of stem cells for medical treatments, but two other sources, normally thrown away at birth and in childhood, can offer parents a way to save stem cells that will be a perfect match for their child and a possible match for siblings or other close family members. These sources are easier to collect from, provide a richer source of stem cells - and have a greater regenerative rate than bone marrow stem cells.

1. Cord blood & cord tissue

Normally discarded at birth along with the placenta, the blood and tissue from the umbilical cord each contain different types of stem cells: those in cord blood (Hematopoietic Stem Cells or HSCs) can be used to treat conditions of the blood and immune system, while those in the tissue (Mesenchymal Stem Cells or MSCs)

can transform into bone, muscle, tendon, adipose and nerve cells, which holds the prospect of use in regenerative medicine.

Baby teeth contain stem cells

What’s involved: Once the placenta is delivered, the cord is simply clamped and the blood collected, along with approximately 15cm of cord tissue for MSC retrieval. The whole procedure takes less than ten minutes and is completely painless. To arrange for cord blood/ tissue collection, you need to approach your midwife, consultant or hospital as soon as possible in your pregnancy, as the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) only allows collection by suitably trained staff. If the hospital is happy for a collection to take place, select a reputable private family cord blood bank which is also HTA-approved. They can then arrange for a fully trained third party to attend the birth, make the collection and then process it for long-term storage. How much does it cost?: The cost of saving cord blood varies from company to company but is around £1,500 for the collection kit, processing, testing and an initial 25-year storage contract. To include cord tissue, banks that provide this service will charge an additional fee. Public donation: If you are giving birth at one of the limited number of NHS hospitals (none currently in Surrey) that collects for the public bank or the Anthony Nolan Trust you can opt to donate your baby’s cord blood. These samples are kept for all patients; it is not an individual storage service.

2. Tooth Cell storage

A child’s first teeth are normally lost between the ages of 6 and 12 years old. Like umbilical cord tissue, the dental pulp in children’s first teeth contains MSCs.

What’s involved: To offer the best possible supply of stem cells, the tooth ideally needs to be gently pulled out at the ‘wobbly’ stage; teeth that have fallen out and so lost their blood supply may have a lower volume of stem cells. Once out, the tooth needs to reach the company who will be processing and storing it within 72 hours. It is therefore best to obtain a special collection kit in advance. How much does it cost?: This varies from company to company. The cost at the UK’s largest stem cell bank, Future Health BIOBANK, which also offers cord blood and cord tissue storage, is £1,495: £295 initial fee including provision of the collection kit, £650 for tooth stem cells processing and cryopreservation and £550 for 25 years storage. Hopefully your child or other members of the family will never have to use the stem cells you have stored, but you will have the reassurance of knowing that it is within reach should it be needed. - The NHS Cord Blood Bank was set up in 1996 to collect, process, store and supply cord blood. It is a public cord blood bank and part of the NHS and now holds 16,680 in storage. More information about the work of the NHS Cord Blood Bank is available at nhsbt.nhs. uk/cord.blood - To find companies that offer a stem cell banking service, enter ‘cord blood banking’ into your computer’s search engine. Future Health is the largest of the private storage banks and holds all samples in its own facilities. Thanks to Tracy Thomas, trained and practising midwife. Tracy is also Future Health’s Business Development Manager. For more information on private cord blood and cord tissue banking or tooth cell collection you can call the Future Health BIOBANK on 0800 954 5335 or visit fhbb.com For more information about how to choose a company for your stem cell storage, see the extended article on our website.

MLD – Getting mums-to -be back on their feet Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a highly effective specialised massage technique developed in the 1930’s by the Danish therapist Dr Emil Vodder. Widely used in America and Europe, the gentle light touch massage improves the efficiency of the lymphatic system, the body’s waste disposal system, by stimulating and increasing the rate of the removal of waste products and fluid from the body’s tissues resulting in reduced swelling and puffiness of the ankles. The only side effect usually experienced is the need to pass water more frequently due to the increased activity within the lymphatic system. * Being pregnant can throw some uncomfortable symptoms at mumsto-be with swollen ankles and fingers and increased sensitivity. As well as the extremities, the breasts are an area that MLD can treat to relieve discomfort. The face may also become swollen in the last trimester and a facial massage using MLD can reduce this puffiness as well as being an especially relaxing experience for the mum-to-be providing essential wellbeing for her prior to baby being born. Plus MLD treatments can safely be used on the abdomen throughout pregnancy, improving fluid retention in the legs. New mothers can find MLD helpful in reducing residual fluid and help weight loss, also if the mother has had to have a Caesarean, then MLD will help healing of scar tissue and reduce swelling around the scar area.

Thanks to Joy Robinson for providing this article. Joy trained in 1995 to become a Massage Therapist and has an ITEC Diploma in Anatomy and Physiology and Swedish Body Massage. Her further diploma, in 2001 followed her studies at the Vodder School in Austria, qualifying her to treat General Conditions connected with the Lymphatic System and to treat Lymphoedema using MLD and Compression. .$( *! Education News 11+ Examinations & Summer Preparation courses One of Britain’s leading tutoring service providers, Fleet Tutors, has noted that the fastest growing trend is for coaching for the 11+ grammar school entrance test, especially now that many grammar schools hold their entrance exams earlier in the autumn term school. The industry also reports a doubling in demand for tutors to help seven and eight year-olds with private preparatory school entrance. Recent results show that over 80% of students exceeded their predicted scores in public exams after using a reputable tuition provider. Typically, 11+ exam preparation courses are designed for small groups of 10 and 11year olds – with a maximum class size of 5 or 6 learners. For further information and bookings call 0208 580 3911 or 0845 644 5452 or email Clientsupport@fleet-tutors.co.uk

SURREY MUSIC

The Arts Council in England has announced that Surrey Arts will be one of the newly created music education hubs in the south east. The aim of this work is to ensure that every child aged 5-18yrs has the opportunity to sing and learn a musical instrument, to progress to the next level, and play with other children as part of an ensemble or choir. Surrey Arts will use its funding to continue Fleet Tutors to support whole class ensemble instrument lessons in school for children for one term and will focus on children at Key Stage One (5-7yrs). After the term a charge will be applied. They will ensure that this will be affordable and there will be a fee remission policy for families on lower incomes.

The great outdoors

Stan the Ram and a ewe at Tilgate, near Crawley

The school summer holidays present the best opportunities for adventurous days out. There is little to beat a fun day spent outdoors - especially if it brings other benefits, too – to learn something more about our surroundings. Children often return to school in the autumn feeling different, more experienced and more grown up. Local organizations are now well equipped to deliver the freedom of being outdoors with guided exploration. Some of these, such as wildlife rangers and forest schools, are for kids to experience on their own; others are geared to school groups, family days out or group holidays with an environmental theme.

Outdoors and Learning Leith Hill – bird ringing Fri 27 Jul, 7.30 – 9.30am. Adult £2.50, child £5 Witley Common - Explore reptiles and butterflies Sat 4 Aug, 10am – 1pm Child £5 Denbies Hillside – Wildlife and ponds Fri 10 Aug, 10am – 2pm Child £10

Here are some of the events that will provide great fun as well as an opportunity to learn from being outside this summer. And, for those who just love to walk and explore, we have our usual listings starting on page 13.

Limpsfield Common – Make a bug home Thurs 16 Aug, 1 – 2.30pm, 2.45 – 4.15pm or 4.40 – 6pm Child £5

Forest Schools

Harewoods, Outwood – Make a bug home Fri 17 Aug, 1 – 2.30pm, 2.45 – 4.15pm or 4.40 – 6pm Child £5

Originating in Sweden, Forest Schools have arrived in Surrey thanks to Wild Learning, so kids can have fun outside, explore their thoughts and feelings and learn about the natural environment, handle risk and solve problems. Based in National Trust sites at Gatton Park, Reigate, also at Winkworth, Alice Holt Forest at Farnham and at Claremont near Esher, highly trained leaders help the children aged 5-12yrs explore, play, make wild art and learn about tracking, den building and the natural world. Rippledown in Kent

The natural world helps children’s fitness, mental health and sense of self. It reduces their stress levels and increases their happiness.

Jon Millington, Director & Co-Founder of Wild Learning

For more information on local Forest Schools, go to wild-learning.net Tel: 01483 424 400.

Junior Wildlife Rangers Great days out for 7-14 yr olds with a chance to study wildlife and plants – some requiring parents to stay, others not. Book in advance on 01372 220644 or email: surreyhills@nationaltrust.org.uk Leith Hill - Badger watching Thurs 26 Jul, 7.45 – 9.30pm approx. Adult £2.50, child

Bookham Commons – Bugs and beasties Fri 17 Aug, 10am – 2pm. Child £10

Leith Hill – Plants, potions and poisons Fri 24 Aug, 1pm – 3pm. Adult £2.50, child £5 Witley Common - Making wildlife homes Sat 25 Aug, 10am – 1pm. Child £5 Limpsfield Common – Animal tracking for kids Thurs 30 Aug, 10.30am – 12noon Child £2.50 Harewoods, Outwood – Animal tracking for kids Fri 31 Aug, 10.30am – 12noon Child £2.50 A recent survey for the National Trust showed that fewer than one in ten children now play in wild places, and 11-15 year olds spend more than half their waking hours in front of a TV or computer screen, while the average child’s ‘radius of activity’ has decreased by 90% since the 1970s.

Family holidays Families and larger groups can enjoy the experience of Rippledown, part of the Bay Trust (baytrust.org.uk), an environmental educational charity based in East Kent that encourages practical, sustainable living within a low carbon world. The team at Rippledown is launching an innovative new eco-holiday package for this summer. From 4-19 August this year, families will be able to make use of Rippledown’s high quality (yet inexpensive) hostel accommodation and its stunning surrounding 3 acres of grounds, tailored for more than fifty different environmentally based fun activities.

12 Families Surrey East July - August 2012

During the family eco-holiday fortnight, activities on offer can be for children and adults separately or as a whole family - and fishing trips, rock pools, nature rambles and bird-watching near the White Cliffs of Dover are all on hand, as are boat trips to France! Meanwhile, one and two-day courses, such as an Introduction to Sustainable Building, will be running throughout the fortnight. There is even a two-week qualification in Permaculture for mum or dad to enjoy while the kids are immersed in bushcraft! rippledown.com/outdoors

School gardening

Has your school signed up to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Campaign for School Gardening? 15,000 schools have done so already – that’s nearly half of all UK schools, involving about 3million children. Schools that register receive access to training courses and a whole host of online resources, including lesson plans, case studies and gardening advice. Each school is also sent a free starter pack; comprising of seeds, soil pH testing kits, posters and more. rhs.org.uk/schoolgardening Piglet at Tilgate, near Crawley

The Wildlife Trust also works with schools, providing direct access to local wildlife and wild places and inspirational learning experiences for schools’ staff and pupils. The great outdoors Park trails A day in Reigate Priory Park allows you to discover some of the hundreds of different species in the park and woodland. A new tree trail includes 25 different trees and some interesting facts about each one. All the trees are numbered and the trail is accompanied by a free Alpaca at Tilgate leaflet containing a map and descriptions. The trail leaflets are available beside the park office at the park’s café. Another large, local park – but with animals and a nature centre – is Tilgate Park on the edge of Crawley. Easy to access via the A23 or M23, Tilgate, like Reigate Priory, has a large lake and adventure playground. It also has a choice of three cafés and a walled garden filled with plants – plus a maze! The Nature Centre is a mini zoo/ farm (small charge applies). Educational information provided on the enclosures tells you about the origin and sustainability of the species. Regular feeding times are always fun there too. On some days art sessions and mini beast safaris are on offer – call Janet Rose on 01293 521168 for summer dates. Next door to the Nature Centre is the ‘Greenzone’, which brings the concept of climate change and recycling to life. You can hire kayaks or rowing boats on the main lakes (dynamicadventures.co.uk). Parking costs £3 for the whole day, and there is plenty to do, see and learn to make a full day out. For more go to crawley.gov.uk/tilgatepark or read the new Nature Centre blog at tilgatenaturecentre.co.uk
