We’re getting Sugar Smart Brighton & Hove unveiled the #SugarSmartCity initiative last October and became the first UK city to tackle sugar addiction on a city-wide scale. The Sugar Smart City campaign set out to raise awareness of the devastating harm caused by over consumption of sugar as part of a drive to help reduce obesity and improve dental health. Residents, schools, food outlets and the groups across the city were asked whether we should be taking action on sugar in Brighton & Hove and, if so, what form that action should take. Through Sugar Smart, Brighton & Hove City Council has formed a unique partnership with the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation and the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership to launch a city wide approach to tackling the obesity crisis.

How to help your child transfer to secondary school It’s one of the biggest transitions of childhood: moving to secondary school. From travelling independently to remembering when homework is due in, your child will need to become a good deal more self-sufficient. Here’s how to ease the transition during the months before. Ramp up responsibilities
Senior school children have to be considerably more responsible for their own belongings and themselves. Whereas primary school teachers send letters to parents, at ‘big’ school, communication on day-to-day issues might well be to your child only. Begin by trying to remind your child less about what kit or books they need daily.
Begin building independence out and about
Most secondary school pupils travel to school minus mum and dad, so get yours used to being out without you. It’ll be less daunting for them if this starts on the journey to primary school, rather than being thrown into travelling alone on a lesser-known route. If they haven’t started walking to school alone or with a friend already, the summer term of year six is a good time to begin. The first time or two you could walk a little behind them at least part of the way to keep an eye out.
Listen out for concerns
Once they have started, keep these in mind... Expect them to be tired and emotional…
Many year sevens get very tired thanks to the ‘newness’, on top of a longer day and a more complicated journey. Stick to early nights and restful weekends to fend off exhaustion – and the moodiness that goes with this.
Some children take this huge change in their stride and are ready to move on, while others will feel anxious. Common concerns include getting lost around a much larger school, dealing with the journey, making new friends and managing the homework load. The key is to keep communication going between you – ask now and then how they’re feeling about their new school and listen and reassure them.
Get super-organised with homework
Attend settling-in days
Get used to knowing much less about what goes on
Most secondaries hold a session for new joiners, usually during the summer term of year six. This is an important opportunity to get to know the buildings, potential classmates and teachers and it should make the first day less intimidating. Consider attending any social events at the school too, such as a concert or the summer fair.
Introduce them to other children going to the same school
This won’t matter so much if half your child’s class is heading to the same secondary but if there won’t be a familiar face, try and find prospective classmates through the local grapevine and then arrange a meet up.
6 | Tel: 02393 117 561 | editor@familiessussexcoast.co.uk
At primary, pupils might only have had a small amount of homework; expect the game to be raised now. Not only will there be more but keeping on top of when it all needs handing in can be complicated. Help your child help themselves by suggesting they complete each task soon, so that it doesn’t build up. A homework planner can also be useful. In primary, you might well have been at the school gates most days and familiar with your child’s friends, parents and teachers. This will change: with independent travel comes a more hands-off approach.
Be there for them
It’s tempting to think this independence means you’re being made redundant come September but they’ll still need you - albeit in different ways. Be there as a sounding board someone to listen and advise. And of course, they’ll still be calling upon the Bank of Mum and Dad and parental taxi service more than ever…
If you are looking for some extra lessons or a crash course in swimming for your child, here are three recommended local providers.
Water safety
Before children, going on holiday was a very different experience. Gone are the days of relaxing care free by the pool, cocktail in one hand, book in the other. Now we have to keep a constant eye on our children, which can prove difficult as they zoom off in different directions! Accidents do happen, but here are some suggestions to avoid the worst.
1) When you arrive spend some time checking out the
facilities straight away – Could a toddler squeeze between the bars or climb over the edge of the balcony? Are there gaps in the fence around the hotel or pool? Find out where the fire escapes are and any meeting points. Go for a walk around the pool, beach, lake or river, looking for any hazards, such as rocks, and where the emergency equipment is.
2) Ask if there is a lifeguard on duty at the pool. Remember, a pool attendant isn’t the same as a lifeguard and might not have the same qualifications.
3)
It’s worth evaluating your own ability to help if there’s an accident. Think about your first aid and resuscitation skills. Consider taking a first aid course before you leave. Find advice on the St Johns Ambulance website on www.sja.org.uk
4) If you’re renting a villa with a pool, make sure your child
can’t wander outside unsupervised, particularly before you’re awake in the morning. If you can’t stop them going outside, nominate an adult to be a “lifeguard” by the pool at all times.
5) Inflatables are not a substitute for supervision.
‘‘My son was wearing arm bands and a rubber ring when he tipped forward while in the pool. His face was submerged and because of the angle of the rubber ring, he was unable to pull himself back upright. Luckily we saw it happen and were straight in to rescue him, but it just proves that even when you think they are safe, something can still go wrong’’.
6)
Don’t let your children swim alone, even if you think they are a strong swimmer. Don’t let them dive or jump into unknown depths of water.
7)
Read the water safety information signs at the beach, and ask a lifeguard or tourist information officer where the safest area to swim is. Ask whether there are any dangerous currents or tides in the sea.
8)
Remember, a significant number of holiday drownings are reported to happen on the first or the last day of the holiday. Parents may be less attentive because of distractions on arrival and when packing to go home.

Teach your child to ride a bike
in 7 easy steps
Teaching your child to cycle has never been easier with these simple steps.
Begin with a balance bike
Balance bikes are great because they have no pedals or stabilisers and are much lighter. Because children can use their feet to balance and move themselves along, those as young as two can learn to balance on their own.
Start on flat ground
Always begin to teach your child on flat ground – at a local park or area with no traffic. You can work your way up to small hills.
Teach them to use the brake At the age of two and a half to three, children are able to operate a hand brake, as long as it’s gentle enough for their fingers. Begin by showing your child how the brake works and encourage her to practise.
Always wear a helmet
Wearing a helmet is a must. The sooner your little one gets used to it, the better.
10 | Tel: 02393 117 561 | editor@familiessussexcoast.co.uk
We recommend that you shop for a helmet together to ensure your little biker likes it and will therefore wear it.
Look for safety add-ons
A steering limiter is highly recommended as this will enable your child to keep in the right direction and prevent falls. While you’re looking at safety equipment, it’s worth purchasing bright coloured clothing or safety vests to ensure she is seen by others at night time.
Get an adjustable seat
Try to choose a bike that has an adjustable seat as this means the bike can be adjusted to suit their height. When your child is on the bike, both feet should be firmly on the ground – not just the toes – and the knees should be slightly bent.
Upgrade to a bigger bike
When your child has developed enough skill and confidence you can transfer them to a pedal bike without stabilisers.
Tips for flying
with young children
Will you be travelling abroad with your young children this year? Here are 15 tips for a stress-free journey... Inform the airline when you book your flight that you have young children and take advantage of all the extra help they offer parents.
Breastfeed your baby, or have a drink ready for an older child when the flight is taking off and landing as the sucking motion will help equalise the pressure in the ears (often an uncomfortable cause of babies crying on flights).
Check if your airport has a dedicated crèche. Some are equipped with toys, books and rest rooms. Ask if you can take your buggy to the flight’s gate so your little one will have somewhere familiar to nap if your flight is delayed.
A seat near the bulkhead (where there is a division or toilet in front) may have a bit of extra room, so your toddler could play on the floor.
Pack plenty of wet wipes in your handbag. Get your children used to drinking room temperature drinks as it can be difficult to keep bottles cool or warm them up at the airport.
Take plenty of baby food and mini snacks with you.
Pre-book children's meals on flights. They get served first and you'll avoid the endless wait for food.
Have a go at Archaeology
Under-twos usually travel free as long as they sit on a parent’s lap for the entire flight. If your budget will stretch to it maybe pay the extra fare so you have an extra seat.
Try to time your child’s day so they will have a nap on the flight. Some airlines provide pillows and blankets.
Dress children in layers as they can get too warm on a flight – or too cold if the air conditioning is on full blast. Take non-battery toys and games with you like good old fashioned colouring books. Let your child have their own carry-on bag of small games and treats. Keep an eye on your child’s feet to make sure the seat in front doesn't get kicked. But most of all; try to keep calm and enjoy yourself… it is your well-earned holiday too! Emma’s Diary is the UK’s most trusted and influential pregnancy and baby channel. Fruity summer Snowy Strawberries
Snacks
Great for a lunchbox treat, these colourful snacks will soon disappear!
How to make:
You will need:
Cut the larger fruit into squares and squeeze some lime or lemon juice over them to prevent them from going brown.
3 thin plastic straws
This one is super easy and great to get the kids helping in the kitchen. Ideal for summer snacks, they can be kept in the freezer and brought out after a hot day at school.
Mixture of fruit such as grapes, strawberries, kiwi fruit, pineapple, banana, apple
How to make:
Push the straws through the pieces of fruit one at a time – make sure you mix up the colours to make it look extra special.
Lemon or lime juice
Wash the strawberries and trim the stalks and leaves off each one.
Note: Children who are under four should not be offered whole grapes because of the danger of choking.
Put some of the Greek yoghurt in a bowl and roll each strawberry in the yoghurt. Lay them on a flat baking tray. When you have covered all the fruit with the yoghurt, place the tray in the freezer on an empty shelf and leave to freeze overnight. You can then take them off the tray and store them in freezer bags until needed.
Fruity sticks
Healthy Banana Granola Bars
You will need:
These tasty bars are full of protein thanks to the hidden gems; quinoa and chia seeds.
1 punnet strawberries 1 large pot Greek yoghurt
How to make:
Heat the oven to 350F degrees / 180C / Gas 4.
You will need: 120g oats 2 mashed bananas, 60g quinoa ¼ tsp salt, 1 tsp cinnamon 2 tbsp chia seeds, ½ tsp vanilla extract 60g chopped almonds and pecans
Grease and line a baking tray roughly 20 cm square. Mix together the quinoa, chia seeds, salt and cinnamon with the oats in a large bowl. Add the mashed banana and vanilla and then the nuts and dried fruit.
Usually filled with tofu, herbs and noodles, they are a great snack and if you can find the rice paper wrappers in a local oriental food supplier, you can not only make those but also these amazing fruity rolls, perfect for lunch boxes. Take the fruit you are going to use, wash and peel if necessary, then cut into very small, cubes.
You will need: Rice paper wrappers Mixture of summer fruit; watermelon, strawberries, apple, pear, peach, mango, kiwi fruit etc.
Drizzle with lime juice over the fruit to prevent browning and stir well to combine the fruits together.
Mint leaves (optional) Lime juice
Add a few small or torn mint leaves if your child likes them. Place a small pile of the fruit at the centre of a rice paper wrapper. Roll one side in, then the two ends and finally roll it up. Lay it on the open side to stop it falling open. If you like you can tie it with a chive or a small piece of string but this should be taken off before your child eats it. Place a few rolls in a small lunch box for your child’s packed lunch!
