We are celebrating fun indoors and out in this issue. Our Soft Play and Indoors Adventure feature on pages 8-9 brings you everything you need to know about the best places for your kids to let off steam. Every parent soon realises that kids may need a bit of encouragement to spend time outdoors – see page 13 for our feature on Wild Learning – and some sobering statistics at the start of our Walks, Nature and Local Conservation listing, page 22. Our holidays feature on page 12 supports the great outdoors, too – from Dorset yurts to summer in the Alps. But we can’t hide the fact that the real excitement now is Easter. And of course, Mother’s Day on Sunday, 10th March gives us more cause to celebrate – see page 3 for some great ideas! Eleanor Lines, Editor, Families Surrey East

Get out in the sun for vitamin D protection! In winter months our levels of vitamin D are generally low because the sun is too low in the sky for vitamin synthesis to take place. This seems likely to explain the way flu spreads quickly in winter. Research conducted by Norwegian scientists into flu epidemics points to the presence of vitamin D in the body as being a crucial factor. "Vitamin D acts as an antibiotic and strengthens the immune system. UV radiation exposure stimulates the production of vitamin D in the skin. In the winter months, the body’s vitamin D level drops, as a result of which its protective effect is unable to fully develop”, explains Professor Johan Moan. www.sunlightresearchforum.eu

Cleaning products – a solution for eczema sufferers? Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a fairly common skin complaint that can affect people of any age. It causes dry, red, itchy skin that can be very painful to live with, especially if the eczema spreads or starts to blister or flake. Finding the root cause of eczema is often a case of trial and error as symptoms can be triggered by any number of factors. However, some sufferers have found relief by switching to simple cleaning and laundry products. Mateja Simic first started to look into the potential causes of eczema when her two- month old son Anton developed severe eczema that did not respond to the usual myriad of creams supplied by the doctor. “I was frustrated with the lack of relief the prescription creams provided so I started to look into the many possible causes of eczema. I came across research suggesting

that residues from additives such as fragrances, foaming agents, enzymes and optical brighteners in household products like laundry detergents may irritate sensitive skin. “With this in mind, I started to look for practical alternatives - traditional, allergenfree cleaning and laundry products without the additives explains Mateja. Some Liquid Soap Flakes, for example, are made only from pure soap with no extra ingredients, and leave no residue behind on fabrics that could irritate the skin. “After washing Anton’s clothes and bedding with Liquid Soap Flakes for a couple of weeks I was delighted to see his eczema starting to ease says Mateja. By going back to a simple range of traditional products like White Vinegar and Soda Crystals for laundry and cleaning, many modern household cleaners and detergents can be dispensed with. Look for products that are free from allergens, versatile and simple to use. For instance, you can use White Vinegar in place of fabric softener, to deodorise textiles, to clean windows and mirrors as well as remove limescale from appliances. Household surfaces can be kept free from chemicals that could trigger eczema. “Although getting to grips with using traditional products has been a learning curve, continues Mateja. “it’s been worth it - Anton is now completely eczema-free!

Babies and Toddlers £25 Million for Maternity Services Mums and their babies are to get new support with a £25 million fund to improve birthing environments. Maternity services have been able to apply for new funds for ensuite facilities, rooms where partners can stay overnight or a wider range of facilities available like birthing pools. East Surrey Hospital Maternity Unit has won £400,000 of this fund – after putting in a bid for more birthing pools and a more homely environment, in response to the comments of 430 local mums and dads. The staff at East Surrey hospital deliver approximately 4500 babies a year, making it one of the busiest maternity units in the area. Chief Executive of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust Michael Wilson said: "This investment illustrates the NHS’s commitment to improving maternity services and East Surrey’s innovative approach. The hard work of the maternity team was also rewarded recently when the department’s standards were reviewed and scored top marks - 100 per cent. The assessment process focused on how the hospital manages the safety of women and their babies. As a further boost to new parents, the NHS Information Service for Parents has expanded to cover babies up to six months old and by April 2013 will be further expanded to cover children up to 18 months of age. The Information Service provides parents with free advice through regular emails, videos and texts on the issues that matter most to them – including all aspects of pregnancy and baby care, bonding and relationship support.

Gardening
Teaching in the Garden Exuberant Blue Peter Gardener Chris Collins is ramping up his mission to get children excited about getting their hands dirty with a brand new range of gardening kit in collaboration with LiteBulb Group: Seedlets, launching in mid-March 2013. Seedlets will be available from many garden centres nationwide. centres nationwide.
Compost recipe Grass cuttings, dried leaves, twigs and vegetable peelings are just some of the ingredients that can go into a compost bin or heap to make peat-free compost – ideal to use in potting or planting in your garden or allotment. Getting started is easy and you can involve the kids too. All you need is a compost bin or a small space in the garden to create a heap. Then just follow our easy guide to creating your own supply of natural food for your garden. To find out more about how to build yourself a compost heap, or to buy a bin, starting from only £15.00 visit www.surreywastepartnership.org.uk
Get creative with your children in the garden by Lisa Cox There’s lots you can do to occupy your children in the garden, but it’s great to get them involved in something that’s both creative and productive. When I was a child my sister and I had our own corner in the garden. Each year we planted carrots and other easy vegetables as well as wild flowers that we could nurture and watch grow. Planting things in pots makes life easier because they can be moved around, also because they provide the opportunity for each of your children to make something different. And with pots you can supply the right soil for any plant to grow, whether it is for seasonal colour, year round interest or vegetables and herbs. Most garden centres sell hand tools for children, which aren't essential but will make it much easier for them to get stuck in. Gloves especially are a good idea to protect their hands and make cleaning up afterwards quicker! A warm coat and hat stops them getting cold and grizzly – but these are soon thrown off once they are working hard! For more fun you might want to buy a broom or wheelbarrow so they can help you more and join the clear-up afterwards.
Primulas
When planting in pots It doesn’t really matter what pot you choose, all will work as long as they have holes in the bottom for drainage. Just be sure, especially if you go for terracotta, that you choose something frost-proof otherwise it might crack in cold weather. As there’s a chance of a late frost in March and even April you’ll need to keep an eye on the weather for a bit. Tender plants can be protected by covering up the pot at night, a sheet, bubble wrap or horticultural fleece will do, or you can move them to a greenhouse or conservatory if you have one. Whatever you choose, the main thing is to make it fun and provide your children with an activity that they can go back to week after week. Lisa Cox is a garden designer who is passionate about helping her clients transform their outside living space. TRAVEL AND HOLIDAYS
Stock Gaylard Yurt Holidays By Eleanor Lines, Editor
Stock Gaylard Yurt Holidays sounded like my idea of heaven and I went to explore this Dorset estate at the end of September. Andrew and Josie Langmead welcome families to enjoy 300 acres of woodland, deer park and farmland and have created three beautiful and private camping settings to choose from. Here is your chance to take the family and have some outdoor fun – with three yurts for your home – or a Woodman’s Wagon and shepherd’s hut! Comfortable beds and bedding are supplied; hot water comes from lighting a fire under a water tank and gentle solar lighting will guide you at night! Yurts are spacious, circular tents originally used by nomads. At Stock Gaylard two yurts provide bedrooms, the third is a comfortable living space. Campfires and BBQs (plus a little stove) mean you can cook outside, under the stars. The yurts even have an outside bath as well as shower! If you stay in the Woodman’s Wagon your spare bedroom is a Shepherd’s Hut with two bunks. Leave your computer and your hair straighteners behind and enjoy the woods and distant views. The Yurt holidays start at Easter and finish at the end of September, costing £460-£695 / week for up to 10 people. The Woodman’s Wagon with Shepherd’s Hut costs £275-£365 / week and sleeps up to 4.
With so much to enjoy on the farm, including young deer born in June, the Nightingale and Marsh Fritillary butterfly there at the same time, the estate is great for nature lovers – though very comfortable, too, for those taking their first steps back into nature. There are many conservation projects on the estate; Andrew and Josie demonstrate enormous care and attention to running the estate well. On August 24 this year (2013) Stock Gaylard hosts an Oak Fair, a great day out for the family and for wood lovers everywhere.
Lulworth Cove is 45 mins drive; there are cycle paths along the old railway track, endless walking including the North Dorset Trailway, beautiful villages and great local pubs. A yurt holiday on the Stock Gaylard Estate has the makings of a brilliant family holiday. Highly recommended. Call 01963 23511 for more information and visit stockgaylard.com

TRAVEL AND HOLIDAYS
Take it outside More children can identify a Dalek than an owl; the distance our kids stray from home on their own has shrunk by 90% since the 70s; 43% of adults think a child shouldn't play outdoors unsupervised until the age of 14. Our children spend less time in the natural world and know less about it than any generation in history. Researchers in all sort of disciplines – doctors, mental health experts, educationalists, sociologists – are beginning to suspect that when kids stop going out into the natural world to play, it affects not just their development as individuals, but society as a whole: what Richard Louv, author of the bestseller Last Child in the Woods, calls "nature deficit disorder".
The world is now divided into two camps, separated by whether you were born before about 1970, or after. Ask anyone over 40 to recount their most treasured memories of childhood play, and I bet they talk about what they did outdoors - and there won’t be any grownups in the story either, until the triumphant (or disastrous) ending. As things stand, today's children will be unlikely to treasure memories like that: just 21% of today's kids regularly play outside, compared with 71% of their parents. Whether you are thinking about whether to let your children go out to play in the
woods, or deciding what they’ll do over the weekend, or the holidays, your willingness to let them experience the outdoors on their own terms will impact on more than just how dirty their jeans get. Jon Millington runs Wild Learning, an outdoor learning and Forest School company running Forest School and outdoor summer holiday clubs for children. wild-learning.net

Just five minutes' outdoor play can produce rapid improvements in mental wellbeing and self-esteem, according to a study at the University of Essex. Free and unstructured play in the outdoors boosts problem-solving skills, focus and self-discipline. Socially, it improves cooperation, flexibility, and self-awareness.

Answering your questions about – RUGBY Max Webb, Founder of Rugby Tots, based in Reigate and spreading nationally and internationally, outlines the features of Rugby and whether it’s right for your child Rugby is one of the UK’s most popular sports and is set to thrive over the next few years as we host the 2015 World Cup. It is without doubt one of the most multi-skilled sports on offer. Is Rugby too tough for my little one? Parents can rest assured that contact Rugby does not start until Under 9’s and even then it is introduced in a controlled manner. Of course, Rugby is a tough game, however, the RFU work hard to ensure it is safe at every level. Before contact rugby starts children have the fantastic opportunity to play tag rugby; a non-contact version of the game whereby a tackle is made by ripping your opponent’s tag from the belt attached to their hip. When can they start? If your child is under 5 and not quite ready for the cold winter mornings then Rugbytots offers a fun, energetic and dynamic introduction to the game. The Rugbytots play programme is uniquely designed to enhance your child’s confidence and teach them some of the basic values of Rugby such as teamwork and respect whilst developing basic skills such as passing, catching and kicking. This means it’s great for girls and boys from 2+ years. So, is Rugby too tough for your little ones? I would suggest you have a few years until you even need to worry! You can contact Rugbytots on 0845 313 3242. www.rugbytots.co.uk
