Welcome Letter from the Editor
Welcome
Welcome back after what was a great half term holiday in the Fairclough household. For once we managed to get away for a well needed holiday between issues. I don’t know about you, but although I am a sucker for the festive period, I do find the run up to Christmas quite stressful. All that organising, who’s visiting who’s house for Christmas lunch, how am I going to fit 15 people around a 6 seater table, which child wants what toys (usually all the ones that are out of stock just about everywhere bar Outer Mongolia), how do we get a babysitter 3 weekends in a row to accommodate all of the Christmas parties; you get the idea? But then I started to think about people who will be stressed out for different reasons; maybe they have split from their partners and they haven’t got the kids this Christmas or they are on their own because of bereavement. What must it be like for those parents? Maybe you are one of them. If so we have tried to come up with some ideas to help bring the glow back into your festive period. We have also spent time putting together an alternative gift guide which features gifts that involve getting the family together, remembering a loved one or helping to make someone else’s Christmas Special. For those of you who need help occupying the little ones we also have our ‘Seeking Santa’ listings and our ‘Panto Guide’ to help you plan your days off with the Family. Whatever you all decide to do, I hope that you all have a very Merry Christmas! See you next year!

MUSICAL BUMPS: Expanding in the all the right directions! As part of the celebrations to mark the expansion of its classes in Stone, local business Musical Bumps is offering free sessions to every nursery and pre-school in the area – aiming to get teachers and children singing every day. A recent nationwide Ofsted inspection of music recommends that children learn music through making music. Musical Bumps classes offer just that with fun learning through singing games, movement and dance, with puppets and percussion for everyone! Local head-teacher, Mrs. Francesca Devine says, “Our families love Musical Bumps sessions as they bring music alive and children of all ages are able to make music together in a fun, practical and exciting environment.” Local Musical Bumps teacher Helen says, “I can’t wait to contact all of the nurseries and preschools in the area and I’m looking forward to getting our local children singing!” Further Information Helen teaches Musical Bumps classes in Stone for parents and carers to share with babies and toddlers. Could you be a ChildLine Schools Service volunteer in Staffordshire?
C
hildLine is calling on local people in Staffordshire to volunteer to go into schools and deliver assemblies and workshops for its new ChildLine Schools Service.
The ChildLine Schools Service aims to help primary aged children, between nine and 11, understand what abuse is, how to protect themselves and how to seek help if they need it, including through ChildLine. Graham, aged 64, was one of the very first volunteers to join the new team in the West Midlands. He explained: “It’s so important that children are aware of abuse and how to protect themselves. We talk to the children about issues in a way that’s appropriate for their age group and they can understand. Children need to know who they can go to for help if they’re worried about something that’s happening to them.”
“It is so rewarding, and I really would encourage people who are thinking of volunteering to get involved .........with this important service.”
S
chools service volunteers must be 16 or over and ChildLine will provide training and support required for the role. For an informal chat about becoming a ChildLine Schools Service volunteer, call 0844 8920 225 or visit www.nspcc.org.uk/schoolsservice .

Join the fun on March 28th and help fund the fight against brain tumours ‘Wear a Hat Day’ is a fun way of increasing awareness and getting people raising money for an often overlooked form of cancer. It’s a day every year that we ask people to wear a hat to raise awareness and funds for vital research into brain tumours. A day when we encourage people to make donations in order to wear a hat to school, at work, at social events or even at home.
Sam Fairclough – Roving Junior Reporter for The Stone Food and Drink Festival
O
n the 7th of October all of the family went to the Stone food and drink festival. There were lots to do for kids and adults like nice food, lovely drink, a bouncy castle, a cool
Kiddy Cook class, a merry go round, a bouncy slide and folk and rock music. A lot of you are thinking was it worth the money? Oh yes it was! Adults were £6 each but the kids were free.
From sponsored silences to charity runs and school bake sales, educational facilities around the country are being encouraged to raise money in any way they can. Sue Farrington-Smith, Director of Brain Tumour Research, comments: “Brain tumour research receives less than 1% of national cancer research spending in the UK yet this deadly disease kills more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer so please get involved on March 28th 2013”. Register your interest today sarah@braintumourresearch.org
Later I ate a kangaroo burger which was a real kangaroo, yum! Soon after I tried the bouncy slide NOW THAT WAS WORTH THE MONEY! So were the other rides. Also there was a load of tents with different things inside. I even met Welephant and a teddy in the fireman tent. There was a Kiddy Cook tent, a BIG stall tent. Inside the Kiddy Cook tent we did some food science and saw each others tastebuds, we made tomato soup and did an experiment which made some ingredients explode in a bag, it was awesome! We soon went inside the big tent where we bought fudge. We saw my scout leader selling beer as his day job at Lymestone Brewery (my dad had an Einstein beer) and we had free samples of nuts and chocolate mmm!
Overall it was a great family day out. Just got to wait for next year now!

Learning whilst having fun!
W
ith the summer holidays a dim and distant memory, learning at educational settings has once again begun in earnest. Holiday time however can also be a time for learning. As teachers begin to use apps, electronic games and toys to supplement their teaching methods, can ‘fun’ learning at home become just an extension of their School life?
With the Christmas holidays just around the corner, how can we as parents ensure that our children carry on soaking up information whilst they’re at home during these School breaks? Inside during those wetter, colder days they can use digital games to develop language, learn foreign languages, geography, science or maths problems. Improvisation and role playing using more traditional toys and dressing up sets, all develop their social skills as they mimic, copy or help us in our roles around the house, garden or in the workplace. Why not try something more creative with them? You could use clay, cloth, felt or just letting your children paint and draw and in many cases just get messy can be great fun and help them develop the creative sides of their brains. With us as parents to guide and co-ordinate these experiences your child will not only avoid spending too long in front of the T.V. screen but will also gain successful learning experiences as they develop their creative and innovative instincts. There is no doubt that the outside world creates an interesting learning environment and a wonderful opportunity to have the freedom to observe and experiment (weather permitting). Family trips to theme parks etc can be an expense which not everyone can readily afford. But there is so much around us that we take for granted. Go to the parks and explore their nature trails, develop their senses and heighten their awareness of the beauty and history that surrounds us that we all too often take for granted. Not only will they be able to use their imagination and/or develop their understanding of nature and history but this will become a family activity and a healthy one too as you walk round a castle or ruin, or explore a forest or park. For older children holidays can mean preparation for important exams. Learning outside school has never been so interesting! Encourage your teenagers to watch discovery and history channels, catch lectures around the subject they’re studying on YouTube and The Khan Academy, create mind maps on free websites, visit revision websites such as BBC Bitesize…the list is endless and certainly more fun than only having The Encyclopaedia Britannica to reference as I did when I was studying for my ‘O’ Levels! The best learning so often happens without us knowing and our children’s’ brains are thirsty sponges that we owe it to them to keep feeding.
NEWS FROM OUR SCHOOLS - ST DOMINIC’S PRIORY SCHOOL, STONE Our Reception and Primary children are having a busy Autumn Term. They enjoyed a trip to the Ancient High House in Stafford as part of their History topic, and embraced ‘Creative Countries Day’, which involved exploring the world on an imaginary aeroplane. Inspired by Bradley Wiggins, Primary 5 and 6 children completed their Bike Ability Award, and the whole Prep School cheered on the Tour of Britain Cycle Race as it sped by. We enjoyed showing potential students around the school on our Open day in October, and were thrilled that so many families came to visit – We hope they will join us at St. Dominic’s Priory in the future. We would love to share our School and Nursery with you. If you missed our Open Day but would like to come and visit then please do get in touch. Alternative Christmas What to buy someone who has everything Every Christmas I find it more and more difficult to come up with some exciting new gift ideas for those few family members who have it all already and speaking with a friend of mine who has the same problem I decided that this year I would make it my mission to come up with a list of really great gift ideas that are a little less ordinary, with not a box of chocolates or pair of socks in sight. Help a charity Many charities offer virtual gift vouchers that can be purchased to help thousands of vulnerable people around the UK and abroad. The NSPCC has a range of festive gifts and cards to turn Christmas shopping into Christmas giving. These gifts will help them to be there for children at the time that they need it most. Check them out at www.nspcc.org.uk A virtual gift from the Douglas Macmillan Hospice is a way of giving a gift to someone special and the benefits are timeless, the gift goes on giving to Hospice patients and their families. They currently offer the following selection of Gifts; • A two course lunch for a patient £5.00 • Fund art & craft materials for Day Hospice patients £10.00 • An aromatherapy hand massage £15.00 • Bedding for one In-Patient Unit bed £25.00 • A bereavement counselling session £30.00 • A Hospice nursing team uniform £35.00 • Fund a makeup advisory session; as part of our female patient body image programme £35.00 You can purchase any of these gifts by visiting one of their local Hospice shops or online by visiting their eBay shop http://stores.ebay.co.uk/ Douglas-Macmillan-Hospice You could also buy one of their lottery gift subscriptions and give your loved one the chance to win a share of the £3500 weekly prize fund. www.dmhospice.org.uk If you wanted to stick to buying the more traditional gift voucher but still want to help a charity you can, through Caudwell Children and 3% will be donated to their charity. www.caudwellchildren.com Adopt an animal Adopt an animal with WWF from as little as £3.00 a month and help protect your selected species and their habitat. Alternative Christmas
Have an Alternative Christmas
By Joanna Parry
T
here are many reasons why some of us find Christmas difficult, whether it be the loss of a family member, divorce, loneliness or the memories associated with the season.
With the shops shut and attractions closed, you can feel like a prisoner in your own home with only endless episodes of EastEnders for company. But whether you want to escape the festivities or are looking for a different way to spend Christmas this year, there are plenty of alternatives out there.
Get active and busy! “A friend of mine who was single one year volunteered to help at one of the Crisis at Christmas lunch centres,” says Robina. “While we all admired her altruism, she said it was the best thing she’d ever done - rather than moping at home alone, she was helping other people, and came away appreciating what she did have, rather than what she didn’t.” While some charities shut up shop for the Christmas period, others, particularly those supporting the homeless, elderly or sick, are extremely busy, and are looking for people with a range of skills and backgrounds to do a whole host of different things this Christmas.
Help out at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter.
Many shelters are set up especially for Christmas so they need extra volunteers to help give out clothing, look after luggage and perform cleaning and kitchen duties. Many also provide services such as hairdressing, dentistry and medical services so they need volunteers with these skills too. They even need musicians, magicians and entertainers! Crisis is one of the biggest homeless charities and over Christmas will need up to 8,000 volunteers nationwide
Manning a helpline.
Helplines such as Samaritans and ChildLine can be a real lifeline at Christmas but they require volunteers to keep them running. Most involve a training programme before you start so get in contact as early as possible
Selling Christmas merchandise.
Cards and gifts are great sources of income for charities but they usually need extra help selling them. Volunteer at your local charity shop or offer to sell to friends and family. Alternatively, contact Card Aid, a charity that produces Christmas cards for about 300 different charities. Throughout the UK there are around 30 Card Aid shops needing help over the festive period
Collecting for Christmas.
Contact your favourite charity and offer to help with Christmas collections. You only need spare a few hours and there are no necessary skills to take part – just enthusiasm!
Help a lonely neighbour.
There are many charities across the country working towards a community where neighbours look out for each other. They need your help this Christmas - invite a lonely neighbour for lunch, help with transporting them to local services or do a few jobs around their house to make their lives easier
Donate food.
FareShare is a national charity promoting the message ‘No good food should be wasted’. Donate food at your nearest location or help with distribution and delivery
Animal lover?
Crisis at Christmas not only provides support to homeless people but their dogs too. Dogs suffer equally from a life on the streets so if you’re an animal lover this could be for you
Keep it local.
There are lots of organisations that need help within your community. Charities such as Age Concern or the Alzheimer’s Society often require befrienders in their local centres, you can coordinate carol singing for Christian aid, and the Salvation Army is very active at this time of year. For opportunities in your area, visit www.do-it.org Get loads more ideas to inspire you this Christmas at volunteering.org.uk and timebank.org.uk/christmas-volunteering

Get away from it all “The first Christmas after my mother died, I couldn’t bear the idea of a big family Christmas at home without her,” says Annie, “so my husband booked us into the Grand Hotel in Brighton. The distraction of the Grand’s celebrations, the sea air and being somewhere without memories turned what could have been sad in to an occasion we still remember for all the right reasons.” Book a cottage.
Whether you’re on your own or with family, tuck yourself away for the holiday period. Check out Clydey Cottages in Pembrokeshire recommended recently by Families Staffordshire Magazine.
Hole up in a hotel.
Forget tinsel and badly-decorated Christmas trees, many hotels from the Ritz in London to Thornbury Castle near Bristol offer festive breaks with a touch of glamour, with everything from champagne receptions to treasure hunts
See a city.
Spending a few nights in York, where you can take a trip back in time wandering its Roman city walls, or taking a ride on the 33m high wheel in Edinburgh can fill the holiday period with history and excitement
Take a day trip.
Why not spend Christmas Day at a National Trust or English Heritage property? Many are open on the day itself and will be given spectacular Christmas makeovers! Several tour companies also run day trips to places such as Windsor, Stonehenge, Bath and Dover
Advertise Here for as little as £48
Book a retreat.
From Holy Island in Scotland to the Self Realization Meditation Healing Centre near Yeovil, Somerset, you can avoid the festivities and find peace over Christmas
Volunteer abroad.
The perfect solution – get away from it all while helping others. Companies such as www.statravel.co.uk www.travelmatters.co.uk and www.handsupholidays.com offer holidays where you can do your bit, whether it’s painting houses in a favela in Rio de Janeiro or cleaning up a village in Borneo

Bumps & Beyond
By Joanna Parry It’s the first questions new mums ask – how can I get my baby to sleep? “The moment I put him down, he just howls!” We have all, at some time or other, rocked our baby to sleep, pushed them up and down the hall, put them in the pram and pounded the pavements to get them to sleep. But it doesn’t have to be like this. Here are our top tips to encourage your baby to sleep.
E
stablishing a bedtime routine. A routine provides babies with security and comfort and can encourage them to sleep for longer spells. Your baby will be more relaxed if they know what’s coming, and the more relaxed they are, the more likely they’ll fall asleep easily. Before bedtime let your baby get any pent-up energy out of their system with tummy time or a kickabout, then follow it up with a bath and lullaby. Dim the light when you’re feeding and put on a CD of children’s favourites. Whatever you do, do the same thing every night Learn the signs that your baby is tired. If they’re fussing, grizzling, crying, pulling their ears, rubbing eyes or is especially clingy, they’re probably sleepy Teach the difference between day and night. In the daytime, play with your baby. Chat and sing to them, keep their room light and bright. Don’t try to cut out the radio or washing machine. At night, stay quiet when you feed, keep lights and noise low and hopefully your baby will work out that night-time is for sleeping! Give your baby a security object, blanket or stuffed animal. A great way to make teddy a favourite is keep it near you so it becomes mum-scented. Put your baby down awake. If they’ve become sleepy on the breast or bottle, rouse them slightly before putting them in their cot. It might be OK to rock them to sleep in the middle of the day but not so much fun at 3am! Teach your baby to settle itself. If your baby cries, allow them to cry for 3 minutes, then comfort them but don’t pick them up. Let them cry for 5 more minutes and return again. Extend the time you wait before returning each time and your baby will learn to soothe itself and fall asleep without assistance. It’s difficult listening to your baby cry but this method does usually work, although it may take a few days Stay by the cot. Some parents choose to stay with their child as they fall asleep but unless you want to do this forever gradually move further away. After a week you’re sitting by the door and, finally, you need no longer stay. If your baby is upset, go to them and say “night, night”, then go back to your place in the room Be consistent. Whichever approach you take, it’s no good doing it one night and not bothering the next Remember the advice on cot death. SIDS is rare and the exact cause isn’t known, but researchers think there are likely to be a number of factors that can affect a baby at a vulnerable stage of development. http://fsid.org.uk advises placing baby on their back to sleep (not on the front or side). Don’t let your baby get too hot, and keep their head uncovered. Place your baby with their feet to the foot of the cot or use a baby sleeping bag. Don’t use a duvet or pillow until baby is over one year old. Never sleep with your baby on a sofa or armchair and don’t let anyone smoke in your home Remember, a happy mother equals a happy baby. Learning good sleep habits early on will stand both of you in good stead for the future, and your baby will appreciate the consistency and predictability. Don’t expect miracles right away, but persevere and be consistent, you never know you might get that full night’s sleep that’s at the top of your Christmas wish list after all. Good luck!
