Welcome to my first issue of Families upon Avon!

With Spring here at last and lighter days ahead when the clocks go forward on Sunday 25th March, winter is really behind us. We can now look forward to the Spring blossom, warmer weather and more outdoor time.

Easter is wonderfully exciting for children and there are plenty of local activities and events during the Easter holidays. Why not enrol them in one of the many clubs and classes available see our Activities for Easter page for some ideas. The What’s On section at the back of the magazine keeps you up date so there’s no excuse for missing out on the daffodils, lambs and Easter Egg hunts!

Also in this issue, Joanna Moorhead helps you in making the right decision when choosing childcare and provides information on the various types of childcare available.

Wilderness Wednesdays at Acorns Pre-school, Christian Malford In September 2011 Acorns Pre-school, Christian Malford launched Wilderness Wednesdays. Wilderness Wednesdays are based on the Forest School concept. Forest School is an innovative approach to outdoor play and learning which originated in Scandinavia. Wilderness Wednesdays promote sensory child-led outdoor play, encouraging and stimulating curiosity and absorption. They build self confidence and self esteem, combine freedom with responsibility, and allow children to see the changing seasons first hand.

A typical Wilderness Wednesday includes the children making bread for their morning snack, getting ready to go outside by themselves, walking to the nearby woodland where they participate in a group activity then returning to the setting to make their own hot chocolate.

Last term the children learned about spiders by making spider sock puppets, singing spider rhymes and looking at, and making, spider webs.

Our long walk included making a very large spider web and yummy chocolate spiders. Other activities were making animal models out of natural materials, making mud pies and experimenting with leaves in water and how the leaves change when the water is frozen.

FOUR PUPILS FROM KING EDWARD’S JUNIOR SCHOOL IN BRITISH SCHOOLS’ BIATHLON FINALS 2012

Local News NEW HEADTEACHER AT THE PARAGON It is with great pleasure that Commodore Chris York, Chair of Governors, announces that Andrew Harvey has been appointed as Head of The Paragon School in Bath from September 2012. Andrew will succeed Titus Mills who has accepted the offer to become Headmaster of Hordle Walhampton Prep School in the New Forest.

After university Andrew attended Sandhurst and then served as an officer on a short term commission in the Royal Dragoon Guards. Since then Andrew has served in three schools; he was a Housemaster and Head of History and Religious Studies at Chafyn Grove Prep School. Thereafter he was Assistant Head at Sherfield School where he served as Head of Pastoral Care. Over the past 5 years Andrew has been Deputy Headmaster of Lambrook Prep School, during which he was acting Head for a year.

He is married to Anna and they have two daughters, Imogen (5) and Sophie (3).

We all look forward to welcoming them to Bath.

WILTSHIRE WOOD RECYCLING: NOW IN OUR 7TH YEAR! Wiltshire Wood Recycling started just over 6 years ago from its base in Upper Castle Combe near Chippenham in an effort to save some of the large amount of wood that is wasted locally. We were presented with our Social Enterprise Mark in November 2011, one of a very few companies in Wiltshire who have been awarded this title.

WWR is a social enterprise which does the following: • Collects “waste” and surplus wood, mostly from building sites and industrial premises • Sorts it and takes the poorer quality wood for chipping • Sells the better quality wood to the public and builders • Makes products such as compost bins and planters from some of the wood.

• Sells kindling and firewood WWR is a not for profit organisation which has a mixture of paid and voluntary staff and is mostly funded through selling its services and products plus a few small grants. The main aim is to avoid wood being wasted and ending up in landfill or being unnecessarily chipped. We have had grants to set up a workshop, for the installation of a wood burning stove which

heats the office and in 2011 a dust extraction system to improve workshop conditions.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and all ages from teenagers on extended work placements from local schools through to retired people.

WWR is a community organisation and encourages local people to get involved through the following: • Volunteering to help with a range of tasks from ‘de-nailing’ to collecting wood • Identifying building sites/industrial units with wood that needs recycling • Buying wood/products - anyone is welcome to visit and see what is available; prices are less than DIY superstores • Suggesting what products are made and where they can be sold

HIDDEN GEM

Two pairs of brothers and sisters from King Edward’s Junior School make it into the British Schools’ Biathlon Championships Finals.

Congratulations to Dulcie Walpole and Bertie Walpole, Lali Rhydderch and Ben Rhydderch who have qualified for the Finals which take place at Crystal Palace in London on Sunday 25th March.

Out of a field of 228 Year 6 girls, Dulcie Walpole came 44th and Lali Rhydderch 57th.

In the Year 6 boys, Ben Rhydderch came 66th out of 216 boys.

Bertie Walpole came 14th out of 195 Year 5 Boys.

Rachel Hardware, Head of Girls’ Games, King Edward’s Junior School, commented: “Congratulations to Dulcie, Lali, Ben and Bertie. They have worked incredibly hard and thoroughly deserve this opportunity to compete amongst the best in the country at the British Schools’ Biathlon Finals. We wish them every success, we are extremely proud of their achievement.”

THE LION KING COMES TO BRISTOL HIPPODROME DISNEY today announced that its legendary musical, THE LION KING, will open at The Bristol Hippodrome before embarking on its first ever UK tour, so that audiences across the country can experience the global phenomenon in their local theatres.

The award-winning show has been seen by over 65 million people worldwide since its Broadway premiere in 1997 and will soon welcome its 10 millionth visitor at the Lyceum Theatre in London.

Four years in the planning, Disney will launch a touring production of THE LION KING at The

Bristol Hippodrome, opening on Thursday 6th September (previews from Friday 31 August) where it will play a limited 11-week season. The production will then play the Palace Theatre Manchester which will include a Christmas season.

The cast and creative crew will be based in Bristol from early July, with the entire production being mounted in a city with which Disney shares a proud history having opened its acclaimed production of MARY POPPINS at The Hippodrome in 2004. The show went on to achieve award-winning success in the West End and

GOVERNMENT’S NEW PHONICS CHECK As six-year-olds prepare for the first ever phonics check at school this summer, Biff, Chip and Kipper will be giving a reassuring helping hand to parents and children who want to practise together at home.

‘My Phonics Kit’ includes a CD-ROM with eBooks and phonics support; reward chart; sticker sheet; tips for parents; and 3 phonics workbooks. It has been created by educational experts, to be totally in line with how children learn to read in school. HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY TO PUT A HAT ON YOUR HEAD? On the 30th of March 2012 Brain Tumour Research and its member charities will be encouraging students from nurseries right through to universities across the country to make a donation and nominate their ‘head teacher’ to wear a silly hat for the charity’s annual ‘Wear a Hat Day’ which aims to raise awareness about the prevalence of brain tumours and the need for vital research. Isn’t it every child’s dream to embarrass their head teacher and there couldn’t be a more perfect way than sponsoring them to wear a silly hat in front of their whole student body?

Wear a Hat Day’ is an annual awareness day which encourages people to make donations in order to wear a hat to school or college. This year Brain Tumour Research is also encouraging students and workers nationwide to challenge their ‘head’ to wear a hat for the day. From sponsored silences to charity runs and school bake sales, educational facilities around the country are being encouraged to raise money in any which way they see fit to sponsor their ‘head’ to wear a silly hat.

Sue Farrington-Smith, Director of Brain Tumour Research, comments: “Brain Tumour Research receives less than 1% of national cancer research spending in the UK yet the deadly disease kills more children and people under the age of 40 than any other cancer. ‘Wear a Hat Day’ is a fun way of increasing awareness and getting people raising money for an often overlooked form of cancer”.

Brain Tumour Research has recruited the help of Kate Langrish-Smith, crowned ‘Hat Maker of the Year 2010’, to develop the official range of campaign hats.

Instructions to make your own bespoke hat will be available to download from the website alongside another downloadable PDF which will allow you to create your own hat simply out of paper. This can be done as a classroom work shop or a break time activity and provides an interactive element for the pupils alongside them helping to raise funds for the charity. These interactive features allow everyone to access and support the campaign and both DIY hats will be accompanied by an online instructions video.

Brain Tumour Research represents the united campaign voice of the Brain Tumour Research group of 18 charities. Launched in 2009, the charity was established specifically to raise funds for brain tumour research.

LOVE-SICK AS A PARROT He may be a pretty boy but Spike the parrot is ruffling a few feathers at Longleat Safari & Adventure Park after apparently falling beak over claws in love with his keeper.

The love-sick African grey parrot is so infatuated he has taken to following keeper Gemma Short around all day and refusing to leave her side.

The bond between the pair is now so deep that Gemma, 26, who got married last year, says she won’t be able to go on holiday again without Spike.

“I went on my honeymoon last year and realistically that’s probably going to be the last time I will be able to go away for any length of time for the foreseeable future,” said Gemma.

“I wouldn’t be happy to leave Spike on his own for more than a day or so and I know how sulky he gets if I’m not around,” she added.

Parrots are highly intelligent birds and African greys in particular are noted for their personalities and the deep attachments they develop with their owners.

The fact that they can also live for up to 70 years makes them a real long-term commitment.

FACE BRITAIN A project created by The Prince's Foundation for Children & the Arts for children and young people aged 4-16 in the UK Face Britain is a national project that invites all young people in the UK to submit a self-portrait.

The artworks will become part of a world record attempt and possibly the biggest online gallery of self-portraits in the world.

The Cuteness of Tantrums / Setting Boundaries

elentless: That is the word I tend to mutter when I’m stomping around in a grumpy haze, steadying myself on walls and furniture, hand clamped onto forehead, begging the powers that be for strength as I surrender to the teeth-clenching exasperation that sometimes constitutes motherhood.

‘It’s just relentless.’ I hiss to myself. ‘Relentless!

Why did no-one tell me just how damn hard this parenting thing was going to be?’

Actually, mothering is only really relentless when I am not quite rising to the challenges it is chucking at me. And the last few months, dear readers, I have mostly been struggling with: boundaries. Ah yes, that old brick wall that children just love kicking against, for as long as they possibly can, until their little metaphorical feet hurt too much to keep going. What is it with little ones? Why do they give us such a hard time?

I mean, where is their respect?

Losing It Not long ago I found myself in that awful position of being the kind of mother I thought I would never be, losing my rag as I attempted to manage an all-guns-blazing tantrum, smack bang in the middle of town, at rush hour. Reasoning was not getting anywhere. Neither was shouting. In the end, I had to grab my boy by the scruff of the neck and yank him onto a bus, holding him at arms length to avoid his attempts to scratch me. Determinedly ignoring the bus full of tut-tutting commuters, I pulled him and his flailing limbs upstairs and mercifully found a place right at the back for him to howl himself into exhaustion.

Not my finest hour.

I really thought I knew about boundaries. Not only do I have a background in therapy, hey, I watched almost every episode of BBC3’s ‘The House of Tiny Tearaways’ with child psychology expert Professor Tanya Byron at the helm. The theory is great; but practically speaking, I had no idea how tough it would be to draw that all important line without resorting to threats, bribery or a big stick.

With the jigging motion of sitting on the back seat of that bus starting to calm us both down and normalise my blood pressure, I noticed that my internal dialogue was sounding horribly judgemental: ‘After all I have done for you,’ my inner embittered doormat moaned, ‘you ungrateful little...’ Cue the scratchy sound of a needle veering off an old vinyl record. ‘Noooooo!’ I yelled inwardly, sitting

up with a jolt as if waking up out of a nightmare. This was not the person I ever wanted to be.

The Blame Game See, I know that blame is the easy option. The popular American family therapist Dr Phil insists that you have to teach people how to treat you. In fact, it is your job to point out when people are taking you for granted. But this takes courage, tenacity and, importantly, respect for oneself. It means giving up the niceness and need-to-be-needed so prevalent in the female conditioning.

Lying in bed that night, still stunned at just how hellish my afternoon had been, it dawned on me that I had been giving into everyone’s wants apart from my own – and lost my sense of self in the process. It was indeed mortifying to mentally assess just how resentful towards my family I had become; how relentless everyone’s needs felt upon me. My son had given me the gift of reflecting back just how secretly angry I was at myself, for relentlessly ignoring my own needs.

The art of good taking good care of oneself, as well as our children, I have found, is being able to set ground rules as a matter of fact. ‘This is Mummy time’ has to be said in the same straightforward manner as ‘the grass is green’. It is just how it is; no need to defend it with barbed wire and machine guns.

As a friend of mine likes to say, ‘once everyone in the family knows their place, even the dog and the cat, we can all relax.’

Cute Tantrums ‘You know, when I think back to those days of tantrums,’ a mother of several teenagers reminisced to me recently, ‘I actually think it was really cute.’

Cute?! It took me a while to get my head round that one. Children’s little brains, I have to remind myself, are not wired for considered, rational behaviour. If they want something they want it. Now. Not having it can bring on a full-blown grief reaction. As overt as they are with their sadness, they are with their happiness and love too. There is nothing quite like my son running up to fling his arms around me when I walk through the door, after nipping to the corner shop.

The other week, my son’s school nursery teacher told me she had asked the class if anyone knew what a tantrum was. My boy’s hand, apparently, shot up. ‘A tantrum,’ he said solemnly as he stood in front of the class, ‘is when you just pry and pry and pry.’ (He hasn’t got the hard ‘c’ sound nailed in that particular word just yet). The discussion opened up and, one by one, the faces of his nursery chums lit up. ‘Oh yes,’ they chimed, ‘I do that sometimes too!’ And: ‘So do I!’ A four-year-olds tantrum support group! Awwwww. Now that really is cute.

Yummy Mummy...

CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people are asking Bath and North Wiltshire mums to lend their support by getting behind Yummy Mummy Week 2012, which runs from Saturday 10 March to Sunday 18 March (Mother’s Day).

The week is all about mums doing something yummy by hosting their own fundraising events and spending quality time with their children, family and friends. All the money raised will help CLIC Sargent continue to provide clinical, practical and emotional support for children and young people with cancer.

There are lots of ways you can support Yummy Mummy Week so why not organise your own fundraiser such as an afternoon tea (accompanied by lots of baked yummy

treats!), a pamper night (complete with yummy delights!) or sponsored buggy push in the park?

Last year Bath and North Wiltshire mums pulled out all the stops as part of Yummy Mummy Week. Fundraising events ranged from cheese and wine nights and girls nights in to pyjama days at nurseries, all helping to raise £8,000. That money, could for example, be enough to pay for a CLIC Sargent Social Worker for 2 months, like Diane who is based at Bath’s Royal United Hospital. CLIC Sargent Social Workers help the whole family, including siblings and grandparents, to

understand and cope with the emotional, practical and financial effects of cancer, from the very moment their child is diagnosed.

What could be better than spending some quality time with friends and family while raising money for families affected by childhood cancer at the same time?

BOOK REVIEWS

A SELECTION OF BOOKS REVIEWED FOR FAMILIES MAGAZINE BY PARENTS

The Parenting Book•By Nicky and Sila Lee•Published by Alpha International ISBN 978-1-905887-36-1•RRP £8.99 This is based on Nicky and Sila Lee’s own experiences of bringing up their four children and also on the parenting classes they have been running for the past twelve years. They deal with the tricky issues that many families have to negotiate these days, such as such as drugs, sex, alcohol, and the Internet, and all in an open and thought-provoking way. It is peppered with quotes about family relationships from both parents and children that reinforce the down-to-earth advice. The authors are Christians and part of the Alpha movement but the advice seems relevant to parents of all persuasions, religious or otherwise.

Through it, we are able to gain a better idea of how someone with autism behaves and their reasons for doing so. Whilst concise, this book provides an up-to-date commentary as well as practical advice on numerous aspects of diagnosing and coping with autism. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to better their understanding of autism.

The second part is called ‘The Nice Stuff’ and the author has some fun suggestions for things to make and do using all that precious time you’ve saved. This would make a great gift for a new mother.

A family gathering Mothering Sunday was originally a day-off from Lent, when servants were allowed to travel home to see their mums, and have a slap-up dinner together. Traditional presents were flowers and cakes – and you won’t go too far wrong if you stick to tradition. What mum doesn’t love having the family all around one table, with cake and flowers thrown in? But mum’s not making the feast, or doing the washing up – oh no. Book her favourite restaurant or pub, or make the meal yourself and make sure you wash up afterwards.

Breakfast in bed Again, a traditional but excellent choice. Try making Jamie Oliver’s ridiculously easy American-style pancakes (1 cup each of flour and milk, plus one large egg: (www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fruitrecipes/apple-pancakes-with-the-girls) with

fruit and maple syrup, add flowers and a pot of tea, and Bob’s your auntie’s live-in lover.

Follow up with a family walk – or take the kids off yourself to let her really enjoy that extended lie-in.

Time to herself This is one thing we mums often crave more than anything, so organise her some proper “me time”. Book her a spa day or indulge her hobby (yoga/writing/crafts/cookery) with a weekend course. If she doesn’t get to see her closest friends enough, maybe you could secretly liaise with them and organise a weekend away? You’ll be rolling in Brownie points after any of these.

Time with you, alone Chances are, since the kids came along, life’s been a little (or a lot) less romantic. Mothers’ Day is the perfect time to put this right, with a hotel reservation slipped inside the card and the grandparents on standby for next weekend. Happy days all round.

Julia Handel from Lemons and Honey Cookery School shares an old family recipe supplied by her mother.

My youngest daughter Daisy who was excited about using her new icing set made the biscuits with my supervision and used pretty pink ribbon to decorate instead of using icing for the ribbon.

The biscuits were simple to make and absolutely delicious (see photo).

Easter Bonnet Biscuits Ingredients makes 8 biscuits 100g butter 150g plain flour 50g caster sugar ½ tsp mixed spice 8 milk chocolate marshmallow tea cakes small amount of butter icing 8-9cm round fluted cutter

Method 1. Rub the butter, flour, sugar and mixed spice together until it resembles bread crumbs continue rubbing the mixture until it forms a dough, if the mixture appears dry add a small amount of milk.

2. Roll out the mixture to 0.6cm and cut out 8 circles.

3. Place onto a prepared greased baking tray.

4. Place in a pre-heated oven at 160˚ c for 12-15 minutes, until slightly browned.

5. Cool on a wire tray.

6. To make the bonnet place the tea cake near the edge of the biscuit, using butter icing to secure and decorate around the crown of the bonnet. Pipe two icing ribbons from the top of the crown to the edge of the biscuit.

Alternatively, take the kids to a pottery painting shop and have a great time making a personalised plate, mug or vase that mum will treasure forever.

Lemons and Honey Cookery School The Lemons and Honey cookery school is set in the beautiful Somerset village of Wellow, just 15 minutes south of Bath. At Lemons and Honey we run small friendly classes in our unique and purpose built studio. Most of our classes are for children from pre-school age to teenagers and occasionally adults.

Our regular pre –school class runs on alternate Thursdays from 10.3012.00.This class enables our younger children to experience the fun of cooking, exploring the origins of food and learning skills such as weighing, mixing, stirring or kneading. he holidays are a’ coming and the endless weeks of the Easter break loom ahead, long and empty. You’re bored of the park but don’t want your kids stuck in front of the TV, so why not enrol them in one of the many clubs and classes running during the holidays. From drop-in groups to week-long camps, there’s a whole array of activities out there.

From football, rugby, tennis, horseriding, swimming, martial arts, archery, climbing walls, gymnastics and trampolining to ballet, drama, arts and crafts, pottery, design, leaning a language, cookery, science, music, chess, puppet making, clay modeling, princess camp and even beauty camp (a little scary!), there are more activities on offer than ever before.

Holiday activities can be a great experience for children: classes can play a big role in children’s physical and intellectual growth, whilst working with others helps them learn cooperation and teamwork. Activities can give children confidence and while they learn their new sport or instrument they are having fun and, most importantly, making friends.

Top tips • Deciding which activity to choose can be hard - consider your child’s interests and temperament but try not to label them too rigidly. Just because your child is shy doesn’t mean drama should be off the menu • Don't limit yourself to the familiar — try something new. Even if your child shows a special talent and interest in one activity, make sure they get exposed to others too, although if you do find something your child is passionate about, don’t hesitate to encourage it • Check the fees involved – there may be hidden costs such as uniforms or costumes • If your child is a reluctant joiner, find out what activities their friends are doing. Childcare: your options There is lots to think about when you’re weighing up which sort of childcare to go for. Do you want your child looked after at home, or somewhere else; with other children, or one-to-one with a carer? Be a Local Leader The Local Leader programme is an opportunity for people in communities across the UK to be at the heart of the London 2012 Games and celebrate them in your local area. Millions of people will be celebrating and at the heart of every celebration will be the one person who makes a difference, an organiser or someone who makes things happen. So if this sounds like you, why not become a London 2012 Local Leader and plan an activity that can include the whole family.

All you need is an idea of how you will celebrate the Games. You can create your own events or use the ideas communities across the UK suggested to London 2012. From Gardening for the games to planning a sports quiz or an opening night in or a super Saturday family BBQ, get your friends, family and neighbours ready to celebrate the greatest sporting event in the world.

Youth and Family Gold Challenge The Youth and Family Gold Challenge is the charity challenge where you take on Olympic and Paralympic Sports to raise money for charity.

Everyone aged 5 and over can take part either as an individual, as part of a team, or with your family and fundraise money for one of Gold Challenge’s 125 charities.

The Family Activity Challenge This challenge is all about doing sports together and is perfect for families. Learn one new sport and or try a family run, walk, cycle or swim. It’s accessible for younger children or those who want to involve elder members of the family too.

The Youth and Family Gold Challenge offers three challenge options to choose from. This is your challenge and you can choose how you do it: • Complete your challenge indoors or outdoors • Choose new sports, or push yourself further in your favourite sport • Complete it as an individual or as a family 1. The 2012km Challenge Celebrating the Olympic year, choose your target distance at 2,012, 201.2 or 20.12km and then complete this in your preferred sports.

You need to be aged seven or over to register.

Cover your chosen distance via one or more of the following sports (for families or groups this is an aggregated total): • Running • Walking • Cycling • Swimming • Canoeing/Kayaking • Horse-riding • Rowing • Sailing 2. Olympic Sport Challenge This challenge is for those of you who want to try out new sports.

Pick five Olympic or Paralympic sports to learn or improve on, then coach or take part in a competitive event to complete your challenge. You need to be aged seven or over to register.

3. The Family Activity Challenge This is a two part challenge, perfect for families as it's all about doing sports together, regardless of age or ability.
