The gender pay gap widens for women when they start a family

The gender pay gap has halved for women in their 20s over the past couple of decades but it widens again once they have kids, according to a new study. The research, from think tank the Resolution Foundation, found that women born between 1946 and 1965 faced a pay gap of 16% during their 20s. This fell to 9% for women born between 1966 and 1980 and to 5% for those born between 1981 and 2000. This suggests that more young women are finding employment in higher paying roles and industries but pay inequality hits home again when they hit their 30s. According to the report, women born between 1981 and 2000 can expect a 9% pay gap by the time they reach 30, which is little different from the previous generation. Laura Gardiner, senior policy analyst at the Resolution Foundation, said: “Young women today face relatively little disadvantage in terms of their pay packets compared to what their parents and grandparents generation faced.” “But while many millennial women haven’t experienced much of a pay gap yet, most probably will once they reach their 30s, when they start having children. What’s more this pay penalty is big and longlasting, and remains for younger generations despite the progress in early careers.”

Hollycombe Easter Special This year is very special for Hollycombe as it will see the return of the world’s oldest Haunted House following refurbishment. Originally constructed over 100 years ago by the famous Orton and Spooner, the Haunted House will take its place next to the world’s oldest white knuckle ride, The Razzle Dazzle, and oldest mechanically operated ride, Mr Field’s Steam Circus. A birthday party to remember By Robina Cowen

DIY or the full shebang? Leisure centre package, experience day or all round to yours? When you’re planning your child’s celebration, factors to take into consideration include your child’s age and interests, the size of your house (and credit card limit), and your stamina levels. Here are some pros and cons to help you work out what type of party would suit you best.

A home party Pros: the DIY approach is great for babies and toddlers - adults usually outnumber the children. Cons: not necessarily the cheap option you might imagine, especially if you go for an entertainer. You need plenty of room, tables and chairs. It takes at least a day to buy and make the food and then there’s clearing up afterwards. Tip: under-threes are too young for games or magic shows, but if you want to push the boat out, music and face painting go down well.

Party in a hall Pros: the mess is not at home! You could invite the whole class and have a magician or a dance party (check the venue’s rules on noise), a bouncy castle or soft play equipment. Many halls are used by playgroups during the week. You can often hire the toys and equipment for a small fee. Cons: large parties and big rooms can be overwhelming for little people. Do hire some professional entertainment. You start out grumbling about the cost; by the end of the party, you’re kissing their feet. Tip: if you’re short on helpers, visit www.familiesonline.co.uk to find manpower. Childminders, au pairs or nursery nurses are often willing to help out at babysitting rates.

Leisure centre or indoor playzone package Pros: a really cost-effective, stress-free way to put on a party. Some deals include venue, entertainment, food and party bags all-in. There’s no clearing up, just pick up your over-excited child and the presents, and head home. Cons: some offer such a good deal that the whole class is there every weekend - sometimes twice in one day!

Activity party Pros: popular with 7-10s, who are too cool for puppets but still need to be entertained. The activity can create the going home present. Cons: when you write the invitations, remember not everyone shares your child’s passions. She may adore streetdance but will some friends mob it up?

Sleepovers Pros: inexpensive and hugely popular, especially with those into double figures. Cons: ration sweets and veto violent video games or you’ll have tantrums and tiaras all night long. Keep an eye on the action: I have lost

my nerve since a seven year-old and his friends decided to pee into balloons and make ‘water bombs’. Perhaps you should dig out that old baby listening device? Tip: don’t forget the golden rule: invite more than four children and at least one will be sick.

Experience days Pros: a brilliant solution when they have outgrown parties and you have outgrown sleepovers, but you still want a special celebration with lasting memories. Cons: cost means this will probably be a solo event, or a day shared with just one friend. Ooh, the politics! Tips: try Absolutely Karting in Basingstoke. Preparing kids for SATs

to bridge that gap. Some schools also offer information sessions for parents, or speak to the teachers directly.

Practise the easier bits too Last May Mrs Thom, a primary school teacher in Reading, became unexpectedly famous after the surprising homework she set her Year 6 class – a couple of days before SATs – spread on a spectacular scale, striking a chord with worried parents and students across the country. The note to her pupils stated “it is vital that you use your time this weekend wisely”, continuing with a to-do list of activities that included “eat Haribo or ice cream”, “laugh until your tummy hurts” and “run until you just can’t any more”. Former Year 6 teacher Jacqui Bevan agrees that finding the right balance is “the key to child success and adult sanity” when it comes to SATs. The Cheshire-based mum of two, who now works as a tutor and runs SATS isfaction, producing support packs for parents and children preparing for SATs, says: “There is a huge amount of pressure but hours and hours of revision at home in the run-up will only add to that. An hour and a half should be the maximum each week and it is all about giving children the opportunity to see what they’re going to be asked to do, to practice, and to gain confidence.” So how can you help with that preparation and maximise the chances of your child’s first real experience of exams being a positive one?

Start early

“Practice makes perfect and if a child doesn’t start getting secure with a particular aspect of the curriculum until nearly May, they’re not going to have seen it many times or become familiar with the different ways it can be presented in a SATs paper,” Jacqui points out. Starting ‘revision’ from September also avoids an unsettling sense of urgency as SATs get closer. But if they’re already looming fast, don’t panic – there is still plenty you can do.

“With numeracy, start with place value,” she recommends. “It’s the cornerstone so they have to know it to be able to build on it, but also the chances are they are already confident with it, and will feel far happier going forward if they’ve mastered their first sample questions.”

Short and sweet

Teachers will be gearing up for SATs so children will have been challenged in school and will be tired. If they have more energy at weekends, make the most of that – but 40 minutes on Saturday and 40 minutes on Sunday is enough. “If your child is very reluctant to sit down and engage with it, the last thing you want to do is force them,” Jacqui says. “Approach it like you did when they were 5 – find ways to weave the questions into a real-life context, turn them into a game or a competition.”

Don’t sacrifice the fun stuff

Keep going to Cubs, swimming – whatever extra-curricular activities your child enjoys. “The only reason your child should have to give something up is if they’re doing too much and are exhausted,” Jacqui states. “You don’t want them to hate SATs revision because it’s making them miss the things they love.”

You might be amazed at some of the terminology used in SATs - Year 6 children are expected to identify modal verbs and auxiliary verbs, and some numeracy questions are presented as written problems, so they have to work out the maths that needs to be done before actually attempting it. The more exposed they are to these kind of questions, the more comfortable they will be with what is being asked.

“It’s also about getting them used to a test situation,” Jacqui explains. “They need the confidence to skip a tough question and return to it if it’s going to use up too much time, and to understand that they can pick up marks for showing their working even if they don’t reach the answer.”

Most parents have been there, trying to assist with homework only to be told: “We don’t do it like that at school!”

It’s tempting to concentrate on the areas your child struggles most with but Jacqui advises always alternating with their stronger points to give them a boost.

Mind the teacher’s toes!

With major curriculum changes in recent years, there are only two previous papers to attempt as relevant practice papers. The chances are that schools will want to use those as blind tests, which are very valuable to teachers. To avoid skewing those results, look for practice questions distributed as samples or independently created by schools or educational organisations.

When SATs week arrives

School will inevitably tell you to ensure your child has a decent breakfast and a good night’s sleep ahead of the tests. The latter can be easier said than done, particularly if they are nervous about what is to come. Fall back on all the tips you tried and tested when they were toddlers – plenty of fresh air and exercise, but not right before bed, a bath and book (not revision notes!) and no screens on in the bedroom. If your child is likely to get very anxious, invest time early in some basic breathing exercises (inhale slowly through your nose – pause – exhale through your mouth) or look at some of the many mindfulness tools available for children, from books and CDs to apps.

And don’t forget

Keep it all in perspective. In the words of Mrs Irvine of Rotherham, another teacher whose encouraging advice to SATs pupils went viral last year: “When you were born, no one said ‘What I want most is for my child to reach Age Related Expectation in Maths when they hit Year 6’!”

Mark Herbert, of the British Council, which is backing the MEP along with the UCL Institute Of Education, said: “With the global economy becoming more interconnected and the drive to boost exports, language skills are increasingly vital for work and life. “Mandarin Chinese is one of the languages that matter most to the UK’s future prosperity. If the UK is to remain competitive on the world stage, we need far more of our young people leaving school with a good grasp of Mandarin in order to successfully work abroad or for businesses here in the UK. Learning Mandarin is also a fascinating process that brings a valuable understanding of Chinese culture,” he added.

How to get the kids outside gardening Gardening can be a great way to get your kids playing outside, learning about nature and engaging with the environment. From the smallest seed in a pot to growing huge sunflowers in the garden, your children will love getting their hands dirty and watching their garden grow. While we may not have the best weather here in the UK, it's so important for kids to experience the natural world, get some vitamin D and learn some great lessons through gardening. So how do you get them outside? We've put together a few creative ways that you can encourage your children to start gardening.

Do a treasure hunt! Every child loves hunting for treasure, and what better way to get them outside than to go on a nature hunt? You'd be surprised how many different species are in your garden - dandelions, vegetables, woodlice, earthworms. See who can find the most different animals and plants. If they don't know what it is, help them to find out on the internet. This is something you can keep up throughout the year, encouraging them to observe the changing seasons and what plants grow at different times. Ask them what plants and animals they would like to see in their garden and start growing these/ encouraging wildlife together.

Encourage your kids to take their favourite toys outside... ...and build miniature worlds for them. Help them create a race course with ramps for toy cars, a jungle for their favourite animals to hide in or a fairy-tale wood for their princess dolls. Encourage them to think about what their little world looks like, and start to name the plants with them while they play.

Grow your own dinner! There's nothing better than eating peas straight out of the pod or picking your first strawberry, and all of these can be grown in your own garden. If you're not hugely confident with gardening, cress is the best place to start, and you can grow it on your window sill. It's a great way for children to learn about how plants grow, watching seeds turn into tasty snacks. It can encourage your children to try new foods, after all - they grew it themselves, and it can add to their important 5-a-day! It's a great way for children to learn about the food they eat and where it comes from, and standing in the mud with a big spade is a million miles away from the supermarket, and far more fun. Some great fruits and vegetables to grow with your little ones are carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, courgettes, salad leaves, herbs, peas and potatoes. Grandparents are great at this kind of knowledge: why not organise a trip to a garden centre with them to choose seeds and plants? Keep an eye on the time of year and encourage your kids to read up on their plants, water them when needed, and take care of them. Don't worry if it doesn't go to plan and you only get one tomato it's a learning process, and your kids can think about why it might not have grown and what to try next time.

Create a wildlife garden Kids love animals, bugs and creepy crawlies, and a wildlife garden can be a great way to get them outside and stuck into gardening. Plant flowers such as lavender, honeysuckle and verbena to encourage butterflies and bees in the summer. Maybe think about building a

pond to encourage frogs, dragonflies and water boatmen, and let your children learn about the life cycle as they turn from frogspawn to tadpoles to baby frogs. Encourage them to learn about and identify the different creatures and how to attract them to your garden and help them to make new habitats and learn where animals live, from bug barns to hedgehog houses. Great fun!

Fill your garden with colours, smells and textures Choose bright flowers like geraniums, pansies and sunflowers so your kids can enjoy making the garden more beautiful. Choose strong smelling plants like honeysuckle, or plants that make interesting noises, like bamboo rustling in the breeze. Encourage your kids to make their garden their own, and if they love it, let them loose at Grandma's too!

Get messy! There's something so satisfying about getting all muddy: kids can't resist it. Gardening doesn't have to be about neat rows of flowers. Let your kids dig â€˜til their hearts' content. If they can't get enough of mess, try making bird cakes to hang from the trees, and let them watch as quietly as possible as birds come to feed. Or how about a bird feeder made out of Cheerios and pipe cleaners? Encourage your kids to get crafty in the garden, making everything from bottle top wind chimes to lolly ice stick plant markers, so they know which plant is which. Step 1 - Begin your craft by taking a freshly cooked and cooled hard-boiled egg. Step 2 - Cut shapes for the bunny’s feet and hands out of the yellow felt; then cut larger ear shapes out of yellow felt and smaller ones from the white. Step 3 - Stick the felt feet onto the base of the egg, making sure the egg can stand upright on them. Step 4 - Stick the white ears onto the yellow. Once they have dried a little, stick them on to the rear of where the face will be.
