Happy faces as Gatley Avenue Children’s Playground refurbishment is completed The Council has officially opened the refurbished and extended Gatley Avenue Children’s Playground, which includes new play equipment specifically for toddlers and young children. Amongst other things, children will be able to enjoy a zip-wire, a trampoline, climbing equipment, swings and a slide as well as other pieces of equipment included in the new playground. Holly Igglesden contacted the Council and said “I took my niece to the new Gatley Avenue outdoor playground in West Ewell recently and just wanted to say thank you and how wonderful it is! She absolutely loved it and ran around saying how cool everything was (she is three). It was very exciting to see the trampoline and the 'big slide' on the hill. We are very lucky to live in such a lovely area with such exciting, free, outdoor space”. The playground is located in Gatley Avenue, West Ewell, KT19 9NE and backs onto the Hogsmill Local Nature Reserve.

Is The Sugar Tax Unfair On Diabetics? In March, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne announced new plans to bring in a ‘sugar tax.’ The additional tax on sugary products such as soft drinks and sweets came as a response to calls from campaigners like Jamie Oliver to reduce the amount of sugar that children consume. Sugar is one of several factors blamed for the rise in childhood obesity. However, parents of children with Type 1 diabetes have said that the tax may unfairly penalise their children, as they sometimes use energy drinks to manage their sugar levels. They have pointed out that, while parents whose children have Celiac disease can get prescriptions for gluten-free foods, parents of diabetic children will have to pay more for their sweet drinks. Type 1 diabetes can result in a sudden drop in sugar levels in the body (hypoglycaemia) and sufferers can bring their levels back up with a quick sweet drink or a snack to prevent their going into a coma.

London Cookery School Welcomes Kids Children learn to create their own meals. A cookery school in Acton, West London, has built a bespoke kitchen in which to teach children how to cook for themselves. The kitchen has adjustable cookers and wash basins so that children can reach them safely and is also fully wheelchair accessible. The Kids’ Cookery School works with children from three years of age and can also create classes for children with physical and mental disabilities.

Bramley School Achieves 100% excellent rating in Independent Schools Inspectorate Inspection The show must go on! At Oliver House School
Academy Battles The Government has announced that it plans to turn all schools into academies, taking them out of local Education Department control. Parents and teachers have expressed their concerns about the plans, which they say will be disastrous for education. The National Union of Teachers which represents staff at many schools across the UK, has organised protests across the country. The government says that it is making the change because academies, which are not within local authority control, are able to raise standards as they are more autonomous. They say that heads have more powers to improve failing schools and that greater control is put into the hands of teachers and heads.
On 22 March the caretaker at Oliver House School, Clapham discovered a fire on the second floor. His quick actions and the very prompt arrival of the London Fire Brigade meant the fire was contained and extinguished, with limited fire damage to a small proportion of the building. No one was in the building at the time and no one was hurt. Despite the disruption, the pupils of Oliver House put on a fabulous show with a hilarious production that told the story of a dastardly plot by Papa Bear to take over Happy Valley with his porridge empire. This shows the true spirit of the school and camaraderie between pupils and teachers. Well done Oliver House.
Independent school for girls aged 3 to 11 Bramley has secured the highest possible rating in its recent Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection. Reflecting the sustained focus placed by the school on the academic, moral, cultural and social development of the pupils, the inspectors who visited Bramley for four consecutive days gave ‘excellent’ ratings across the board for every aspect of their inspection. ‘Excellent’ is the highest grade that can be achieved in an ISI inspection and was formerly known as ‘outstanding’. However, critics of the scheme have said that the move will have a devastating effect on schools, as there is no evidence that academies perform better than other schools. The move will also reduce the role of parent governors, who currently help decide school policy. The move will also shift ownership of the schools to private companies who will be able to sell off the land if they wish. In 2012, ministers admitted that academy school playing fields could be sold off without any checks.
Kids to get mini computers BBC to give each Year Seven child a mini machine This year, every Year Seven child in the UK will get their own BBC Micro:bit. This tiny computer helps children begin to learn code and get used to technology from an early age. There are lots of different applications for this little gadget, from creating a digital watch and using it as a fitness aid to count your steps, to making games or controlling a music player. Around one million children will receive the Micro:bit from the BBC, which is passionate about helping children to both access technology and develop skills that will benefit them in their later lives.

Sports skills videos transform PE teaching Two University of Portsmouth students have joined forces to produce a library of sports skills videos they believe could revolutionise the teaching of PE in primary schools. Primary school PE coach Vanessa King, who is a part-time PhD student in the Department of Sport and Exercise Science. Each video features primary-aged schoolchildren demonstrating everything from cartwheels to tennis serves. The films last between 15 seconds and two minutes, and are already being used to teach PE in the nine primary schools where Vanessa works. Vanessa said: “A lot of schools pay for coaches to come in from outside because their own staff just aren’t qualified enough. Primary school teachers receive just 12 hours of PE training, and very little of that is theory.” The videos are set to be released commercially for schools to buy. Following a recent ISI inspection, St Christopher’s School Trust (Epsom) received top marks and were declared ‘ excellent’ in every one of the eight areas! The range and quality of the exceptional opportunities offered were recognised together with excellent teaching. St Christopher’s academic excellence was confirmed: "Attainment is excellent”. The inspectors noted that "pupils are highly motivated and engaged learners” due to "the challenge culture that permeates the classrooms and extension activities", "advanced levels of skill, knowledge and understanding in all subjects" and that the school makes "learning irresistible to its pupils". Creative opportunities are rich and varied with "exceptional pupils’ artwork displayed around the school". Musical opportunities were celebrated including its own orchestra which plays with "musicality and maturity". Teachers were described as "enthusiastic and diligent" and "knowledgeable" with "high expectations of the pupils". Building Stronger Girls

But as the author of the new book Girls, Uninterrupted, I know that we can create a strong core of self-belief in our girls’ formative years, they will be better able to resist the pressure to behave in ways that are not always good for them later on. My daughters are not weak and defenceless and neither are yours. But in a challenging world full of mixed signals about how they should look and who they should be, here are five ways to make girls stronger when they need it most. START EARLY The tween years – the ages between seven and twelve – offer a critical window when parents can help girls develop an unassailable sense of self. It’s during this period that our power to positively influence our children is also at its peak – before the inevitable separation of adolescence that leads to our daughters’ peers beginning to drown us out. If we really work at staying connected to our girls in those years, we have a better chance of being able to guide them when things get really tough when they are teens. KEEP TALKING Girls usually get off to a flying start. They talk early, are sociable from a young age, and often throw themselves into school. But somewhere around the age of nine or ten, their confidence can take a nose-dive. They become confused by mixed messages that tell them they can be anything, but the most important thing about them is how they look. They are baffled to be told they should always try their best – but at the same time should not stand out too much. This is also the age when they are also heading into their most vulnerable phase of life – their teen years – when they will be stepping through a minefield of sexual politics, played on phones and over the internet.
The good news is that the latest research shows the best defence against bad influences is you, the parent. One upside of the sexualised culture is that fewer topics are off-limits when we talk to our children – and in my book Girls, Uninterrupted, you will see there really are age-appropriate ways to tackle every subject, from sexting to to selfharming. To help make this possible, set aside and stick to a regular, special time for you and your daughter to spend together. Let her decide what you do together so she feels able to relax and enjoy it. Don’t lecture, and let her bring up topics of conversations that are important to her. Resist the temptation to preach, judge or over-react, so she keeps coming back. If we really work at staying connected to our girls early on, we have a better chance of being able to guide them when things get tougher. EXPLAIN HOW TO RECOGNISE NEGATIVE VOICES IN HER HEAD

When a girl hears a voice telling her she’s not good enough, she tends to assume it’s right. Tell her that just because she hears it, doesn’t mean she has to listen. Help her give self-critical thoughts a name so can recognise they are worries rather than realities and that she can choose to ignore them. Show her too how to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. For example, if that inner voice tells her, ‘You can’t do this’, show her she can substitute that thought with: ‘This might be tricky, but I can learn.’ SHOW YOUR DAUGHTER HOW TO BE HER OWN BEST FRIEND From around the age of about nine, girls can start to give themselves a very hard time for saying or doing the wrong thing. First, tell her not to be so tough on herself, and tell her how you, as an adult, have also made mistakes. By the same token, little girls are told to love their mummies, daddies, siblings and pets – yet we often forget to give our daughters permission to love themselves too. Tell her that being her own best friend doesn’t make her big-headed – it just makes means she’s looking out for herself. TRAIN HER TO BECOME MEDIA LITERATE In a world where a young girls will see more pictures of physical beauty in one month than we saw in a year, girls need training to process these images. In the two minutes you take to show her how a magazine photograph of an ultra-skinny perfect celebrity has been airbrushed, you have taught her not to hold herself up to an image of perfection that doesn’t exist.

Our annual Science is Fun! events for Year 5 and 6 pupils, for example, demonstrate this commitment to exciting girls about the sciences and allowing them to take part in experiments – usually the most important catalyst for future passion. However, looking after mental and emotional well-being is also a crucial focus for our teachers. Girls are very robust but they are ‘under attack’ on all fronts today. It is no longer easy to escape to the haven of a peaceful bedroom or sit quietly with a book for a couple of hours. The constant pressure to maintain an online presence for fear of exclusion and to adopt a lifestyle that
fits the accepted norm is immense. Building the resilience and confidence to be yourself and make choices is something that Greenacre girls have lots of opportunities to do. Just this year our Junior girls have led assemblies, performed in concerts and shows, contributed to teamwork on the hockey field or netball court, organised and led House events and much more. These opportunities are built into our Personal Wellbeing and cocurricular programmes and since becoming a United Learning school last September the girls have also enjoyed many additional opportunities for personal development including leadership programmes and nationwide choral events. This Summers Adventure is out there, you just have to go and find it. “Adventure is out there; you just have to go and find it” is our family motto. Our daughter, Amy, came up with it after watching the film UP, and felt saddened that Ellie, the main character died before she’d been able to go on her adventure of a lifetime, and so it was that as a family we promised ourselves more adventure into our lives. Now, adventure normally conjures up spectacular images of bearded alpha males, bare-chested and muscles-a-bulging. Clearly, for a typical urban family this was not our definition of adventure. To us, adventure is what you want it to be, and the pursuit of achieving just that – there are no right or wrongs. It’s more about a mindset or approach to life, a ‘get outside and give something a go’ attitude. Our family adventures started with local walks, camping in the back garden and climbing mountains. The 100 adventures we completed in 2013 became the basis for our first book, 100 Family Adventures. We then progressed onto bigger challenges, like paddling the Great Glenn Canoe Trail (across Scotland) and walking the 100 mile Ayrshire Coastal Path as part of our 500 Fresh Air Miles Challenge – to travel 500 miles using non-motorised transport. We’ve tried new things, been to new places and grasped opportunities, saying YES more, and not shying away from a challenge. Our approach is to give things a go, make mistakes and laugh about them, and not to take life too seriously. The majority of things we embark on are low risk, low cost and require minimal skills and experience. Just getting outdoors and doing something is all it takes to enjoy the psychological and physical benefits of being active and engaged with the natural world – they don’t call it the ‘great’ outdoors for nothing! ‘’We think it's so important to get outside
because you become more resilient and stronger in the mind not to mention have fun, which we always do when walking up mountains and canoeing down rivers. ‘’ – Amy Our commitment to a life of adventure upped in 2014, after our decision to escape the rat race of modern living, and embarked on what we called ‘’Adventure’’. We quit our jobs, sold our house and took our then primary-aged daughters out of school to embark on a year of adventure, to create a rich mix of educational experiences whilst learning about the UK as we travelled. Our new life has given our daughters the opportunity to discover themselves and pursue their passions. Amy, who aspires to be an author, is working hard on her first novel whilst completing online writing courses. Ella has a strong interest in animals and is currently completing a professional dog walker qualification. Along with studying English, maths, and other academic subjects they are also actively engaged with the UN’s Global Goals, raising awareness of plastic pollution and campaigning to change behaviours with regards to our use of single-use plastics. Whilst some of our bigger adventures have been very rewarding and life forming, it’s the small, almost inconsequential activities that we do on a regular basis that give us all a valuable dose of quality family time in the outdoors. These are things anyone and every family can achieve together anywhere. In our previous life, in the battle against the 9 to 5 culture, we’d brainstorm things we could do in the outdoors, places we could go to, and concoct simple recipes that we could cook on a stove, allowing us to ‘eat out’ for under a fiver. The aim was to switch off from work/ school and have some outdoor active time, and return home both tired and refreshed. It was these ideas that kept us sane back then, and are the core of our 50 Evening Adventures book, which are in fact the things we still do today, even though our circumstances have

changed. “Getting outdoors is so important because it makes you feel happier and more alive. We make sure we have time to go outside and explore, because we know even if we just walk for a few miles, we will feel much better. Doing this gives us life skills and makes us tougher, stronger and happier.”- Ella Of course, a lifestyle like ours has its downsides, but we counter any negative thoughts by constantly reminding ourselves of the ups. We are spending lots of quality time as a family, learning and growing together, seeking adventure and opportunities, and giving our children a childhood that can only grow exceptional adults. The Wealden Literary Festival, a celebration of nature and place through literature The Wealden Literary Festival is a celebration of the outdoors, the natural world and the earth beneath our feet.
