Bossing your bins: five easy ways to avoid wish-cycling It’s tempting to recycle everything in sight. So, it’s no surprise that at least one unrecyclable item a week per household accidentally goes into the recycling bin – known as ‘wishcycling’. Wish-cycling is a big deal because a whole truckload of recycling could be rejected at the recycling facility if it contains items that can’t be recycled. It’s very expensive for local councils to sort out, negatively affects Surrey’s recycling rate and is damaging for the environment.
The Big Butterfly Count (15 July to 7 August) is a UKwide survey aimed at helping the Butterfly Conservation charity assess the health of the environment by counting the amount and type of butterflies. www.bigbutterflycount.org

EDUCATION
5 top tips to be school ready, from a Speech and Language Therapist By Lisa Taylor-Jones, founder of Step Up Speech and Language Language is a crucial skill for learning and is the most important factor for a child’s educational success – more so than poverty or parental education.
use praise and expand on this by saying… “That’s right, it’s a big black dog!” 4. Make word-learning learning fun! This is a great activity for younger children. Place six normal household items in front of your child and, as you name them, ask your child to point to each one. Once they have demonstrated their understanding of these words, you can then hide the items in a cloth bag or box. See if your child can remember the name of each item you take out.
Here are my five top tips to prepare your child for going back to school. 1. Model the sounds your child struggles to say Lots of children start school not being able to say all the sounds of the alphabet. This is normal. However, if your child can’t say it, then they can’t read it or write it either! Parents can support children by using the sound the child can’t say in an exaggerated way, and often. This is known as ‘modelling’ and gives the child a clear heard model of what the sound SHOULD sound like in words. “Would you like fish fingers for your food?” “Do you want four or five?” So, emphasise the sound you want to target. 2. When praising your child, be specific! It may sound obvious, but children respond extremely well to praise. With speech and
You can then develop this further… ‘Brush. I’m going to brush my hair! Brush your hair. Where’s my brush?’ language, it works best when the praise is specific. Highlight to your child they’ve got it right! “Great speaking! You said ‘k’ at the end of your word - duck!” Even if your child doesn’t always get it right, praise them anyway. Avoid telling your child they are wrong, instead - use modelling and praise them for trying. 3. Expand on what your child has told you This is a form of modelling - as the adult repeats what the child has said but adds new words into the sentence. It helps children who speak in single words to use fuller, more detailed, sentences when talking. If your child points and says ‘dog’
5. Talking about what your child is doing Play is a great way for children to learn the right words to go with their thinking. Here they can map new words onto objects and learn action words as you describe what they are doing while avoiding asking lots of questions. ‘You have a cow, the cow is walking to the barn!’ This may seem odd at first, but with repeated practice your child will then develop their vocabulary and speak in sentences. Remember, when it comes to practice little and often is always best, and most importantly - have fun! Get in touch with Lisa on 07583502155 or visit www.stepupsl.com if you would like to discuss any concerns you may have. Lisa Taylor-Jones is a Speech and Language Therapist and the founder of Step Up Speech and Language. She runs language booster programmes, both online and in person to ensure children have ‘school ready’ skills by the time they start school.

Summer yoga poses to calm and prevent back to school nerves By Lisa Butler, from Surrey Heath Yoga
Getting ready to go back to school can be unsettling for Children, especially for those moving onto a different school.
6. 7.
Using certain yoga postures and breathing techniques can really help both parents and youngsters with nerves and anxiety.
This asana is calming and helps with confidence… The breath will calm, and the hugging sensation will help give your youngster confidence.
My favourite Pranayama Yoga Breathing Exercise is Pyramid Breath – this technique can be practised either by sitting with your legs crossed (easy pose) or lying with your back on the floor, like a starfish. Ask your Child to imagine a triangle, starting at the bottom left corner we breathe in for the count of 3… 1,2,3. On the third breathe you’ve reached the top of the triangle and hold the breath for 3… 1,2,3.
Taking three deep breathes in and out Change over arms and repeat for another three breathes
Finally, you can also ask you child to say the following example affirmations, to themselves three times:
can be used anywhere at any time. If your youngster can get used to this technique, it is a very good way to manage stress, anxiety, and worry. Another favourite Asana of mine for youngsters, is resting dove pose. This is achieved by:
As we move down to the bottom of the triangle breathe out for 3… 1,2,3.
1. 2. 3.
Repeat for three rounds. Using the visualisation will help distract the mind from anxiety or worry. This technique
4. 5.
Laying on your back Bend your knees towards the ceiling Bring your knees together with feet pointing to the corners of the mat Raise arms up towards the ceiling Cross arms over and touch shoulder blades
1. 2. 3.
I am safe I am loved I am calm
The key to anxiety and worry is to distract the mind from allowing these thoughts to continue. Using one of the above techniques can really help in these moments. Lisa runs both adult and children’s yoga classes, with the focus being on calmness and stillness, which enables her students/ clients to have confidence to manage their thoughts and be at peace with stillness. If you would like to know more about her classes, email lisa@surreyheathyoga.co.uk or by visiting www.surreyheathyoga.co.uk

CLUBS & CLASSES
A love of performing can develop skills for life Whether it be diving into their dressing up box or stepping onto the stage, performing is important to children and young people, and the benefits of this can often go unnoticed. Performing arts can teach children and young people key skills that can be used in everyday life. Creativity Children are naturally imaginative, and pretend play and make believe comes easily to them. Imaginative play can enable a child’s social and emotional development, helping them to form new ideas and develop resourcefulness. Problem solving The ability to solve problems creatively within the safety of a performing arts environment can be transferred to everyday life when dealing with a variety of issues. If children feel comfortable exploring and dealing with problems in a non-linear way, this makes them more confident overall. Empathy Performance is a classic form of storytelling, not only for entertainment but for sharing tales and ideas. Performing in character can help children appreciate another person’s point of view. To accurately portray a character, we need to be able to step into their shoes, understand their situation and what has brought them to that situation. If a child understands a character in this way, they can apply this to everyday life, helping
Familiesonline.co.uk
them to react to friends and adults and develop their social skills. Listening The ability to listen is an important skill, especially when a child is in a new setting with new routines and expectations. During performing arts classes children take direction from their teachers and peers. This encourages them to be receptive to others’ ideas and work collaboratively. Confidence Building Some children are never happier than putting on a show for their family and friends, but for some standing up in front
an audience can be daunting. Performing arts are hugely beneficial to children’s confidence levels. Learning new skills, rehearsing, and performing in a safe space, with the support of expert teachers and encouragement of their peers, can prepare children to deal with situations in which they feel anxious. At PQA we believe that our three core modules, Musical Theatre, Comedy & Drama and Film & Television, offer our students the very best mix of both performance based and technical training as well as providing them with skills for life to help them grow into well-rounded individuals. www.pqacademy.com

CUT AN OU DK T E P
Make dairy-free Neapolitan ice cream! We asked Emily Leary, multi-award-winning food, lifestyle and parenting writer, presenter, photographer and author of A Mummy Too (www.amummytoo.co.uk) to share her delicious, creamy dairy-free Neapolitan ice cream recipe with us. So the secret ingredient in this wonderfully tasty ice cream is …. banana! When you freeze sliced bananas and then blitz them in your blender or powerful food processor, the banana eventually turns into a silky, creamy ice cream which can be flavoured with vanilla, cocoa and frozen strawberries to create gorgeous Neapolitan ice cream. Freeze in a container to create that classic Neapolitan look.
Instructions Ingredients
Step 1 Grab a non-stick tray that will sit flat in your freezer. In a single layer, add the banana slices to the tray with the strawberries to one side. It’s okay if the layers overlap a bit, you may just have to break them up once frozen. You may need more than one tray. Then freeze your fruit.
Step 2 Blitz the frozen bananas in a blender. Set the frozen strawberries to one side. The bananas will look chunky/sandy at first; continue until you have a pale, creamy mixture. If you don’t have a strong blender, bliz in batches. If your bananas won’t blend, let them defrost for five minutes, until softer.
Step 3 Divide the banana mixture between three freezer-safe bowls.
•
6 large bananas (750g peeled weight) sliced into 2cm (3/4 inch) pieces
•
150g (5.3oz) strawberries, hulled and halved
•
1 tsp vanilla extract
•
2 tsp cocoa powder (dutch processed)
Equipment • • • • • • •
Weighing scales Measuring spoons Chopping board Kitchen knife Food processor 3 bowls 1 litre freezer-safe tub with lid
Makes approx. 1 litre of ice cream.
Step 4 Add the vanilla to the first bowl, the cocoa to the second and the strawberries to the third. Stir well. Pop the third bowl with the strawberries and banana back into the blender and blitz until smooth. You now have your three flavours. 10
Step 5 Your ice cream may have become quite loose, which can make sectioning it in the container tricky. If necessary, cover all three bowls and firm back up by freezing for an hour.
Families London Surrey Borders
Step 6 Once the three flavours are firm enough to hold their shape, transfer into a 1 litre tupperware container in the traditional Neapolitan pattern. Pop on the lid and freeze for another hour, or until firm enough to scoop. Enjoy! Familiesonline.co.uk
