Baptist Church Stirling – Breastfeeding Group

The Breastfeeding group has been under a great deal of speculation in recent months, with reports it will no longer be able to operate from the Baptist church, and of the NHS removing its funding. Thankfully the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) has stepped in to take over the funding, and allow the group to continue in its current form. We meet each week at the Baptist church in Stirling, on a Friday from 10.30 till 12pm. The group is a place for Mums to meet up, have a cuppa and a biscuit, and swap experiences and concerns. Health visitors and breastfeeding councillors are also on hand for support and advice.

Groups like this are essential to support mums and increase breastfeeding success.

This summer sees the launch of CycleStirling with a programme of events and activities designed to promote cycling as a fun, safe and alternative option to the car. Going Carbon Neutral Stirling (GCNS) has acquired 10 Cargo bikes and as part of the Cycle Stirling project they are being offered to Stirling families on a month’s free trial basis. If you visit European cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen you’ll see plenty of cargo bikes. Designed to transport children, groceries or even pets, they are now set to become a popular attraction and talking point on the streets of Stirling.

One in four car journeys in the UK are shorter than two miles. And this is a major contributor to the carbon footprint of most Scottish households. Going by bike not only reduces emissions and pollution but it’s the healthier option and its huge fun too!

From African Skies to Green Enterprise It’s 5400 miles from Zimbabwe to Stirling, but for one local mum, it’s also been a journey which has led her from working in the UN in Africa to becoming a Scottish businesswoman!

Jewels Lang was forced to flee Zimbabwe with her family, due to the increasingly unstable political situation in the troubled country.“As a mother, the safety of your children must always come first” explained Jewels, “When you are faced with food shortages and guns at the end of your street, you get to the stage that you have no alternative but to leave.”Jewels has just purchased the Stirlingshire franchise of Exclusively Green Cleaning, an eco-friendly cleaning company. Stirling’s got talent Seppi Preston of Lighthouse Studios has had major success at the Master Photographers’ Association Scottish region awards for the 6th year in a row. The photographic awards took place on 9th May at the Dunblane Hydro, and with over 900 entries, competition was fierce this year. Seppi won 3 awards of excellence in the categories of Family Portrait, Reportage Wedding and Complete Wedding, plus an award of merit in the Contemporary Portrait category. The broad range of categories that Seppi has won awards in shows his versatility, consistency and talent as a photographer of people. ‘Linzi Carbis who is a social work assistant in a children and families team and Simon Hutchison who is a local criminal defence lawyer are going to do a 10 day trek to Machu Picchu, Peru to raise money for Strathcarron Hospice and Falkirk Young Carers. We need to raise over £7000. The two charities were chosen specifically to benefit local people and are close to our hearts as they provide such an amazing support in our local area. We are concentrating on approaching local businesses for donations of gifts and money.

Summer Holiday Fun at the Library

The Circus Stars summer reading challenge will be coming to libraries in Clackmannanshire, Falkirk and Stirling this Summer. An interactive Circus Stars website was launched at the end of May, linking children with top authors and illustrators – go to www.circus-stars.org.uk to find out more.

In Clackmannanshire libraries there will be circus arts and crafts, zoolabs and magic shows.In the Falkirk libraries there will be competitions, storyteller visits, circus skills workshops and a juggling with words workshop. Zero Waste Volunteer Programme

The Zero Waste Volunteer Programme is a volunteer run project for Forth Valley. The project aims to recruit and train volunteers on waste prevention campaigns. SwimEasy – Summer “RapidTrack” Lessons – Forth Valley

Our specialist One-to-Two Holiday Classes, for children or adults, can be booked a week at a time, from Monday to Friday. Five consecutive lessons can improve any weakness rapidly and any technical correction, or specific area of improvement required, can be dealt with much more easily. These specialist courses offer an ideal opportunity to begin swimming lessons for the first time.

One-to-Two Lessons - The confidence gained from individual attention significantly speeds up the learning process and develops better self-assurance. Following childbirth and around the menopause many women suffer from bladder and bowel problems. This can be a result of weakness of the pelvic floor muscles, stretching of the supporting tissues, changes in hormones and heavy lifting. It is estimated as many as a third of women have these symptoms and 75-80% of these could be improved with the appropriate advice and treatment following a full assessment with a suitably trained clinician. hildren’s feet are different. At birth, a child’s foot is mainly made up of cartilage whereas adult feet are mostly bone. This makes your child’s feet very malleable and vulnerable to deformity from pressure and abnormal stress. Even something as innocuous as tight baby-grows or socks, as well as badly fitted or outgrown shoes can have a damaging effect.

Your child’s feet are always growing, however the speed of growth varies. In their first 2-3 years, a child’s feet grow rapidly. This slows around 4 years old before increasing again around 7. Most children’s feet reach their ‘adult’ size by the age of 14 or 15.

Starting with footwear, children’s shoes need to fit properly and be discarded when outgrown and not just when outworn. It’s very important to have their feet measured regularly by a trained fitter. Natural materials like leather shoes allow feet to breath reducing sweatiness and fungal infections.

Leather shoes also tend to stretch a little making them more comfortable and forgiving than plastic shoes. Children are vulnerable to verrucas. Easily picked up at school or at the swimming pool, the sooner a verruca is spotted the easier it is to treat. Look for small black dots or breaks in the skin pattern or raised areas like a wart.

In-growing toenails often affect teenage boys but can affect any child. These can be avoided by careful nail cutting, avoiding cutting down the sides of the nail. Also, wearing cotton socks to reduce sweating leaves the skin in better condition and less easily penetrated by the nail.

Fungal nail infections are relatively uncommon in children’s feet, however changes in the nail such as ridging, flaking or thickening may indicate an infection. This should be checked by a Podiatrist or your G.P. Inspect your children’s feet regularly because they certainly won’t. If you have any doubts or concerns contact a Podiatrist. Check they are HPC registered and members of The Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists (a list can be found on the Society’s website – www. feetforlife.org). A child’s feet have a long road ahead. The right care will set them off on the right step.

y name is Mary Docherty. My husband William and I live in Alva, Clackmannanshire with our four children. Molly (7), Olivia (6), Leo (4) and Rosie (2) I am an optometrist and have a practice in Tillicoultry called Ochil Eyes 01259 752755. I am particularly passionate about children’s eye care as so many learning difficulties are linked to eye problems or the need for glasses. Every child should have their eyes tested at least once a year and testing children’s eyes is a really fun part of my day! I am really patient with other peoples kids and I think parents appreciate that I have children of my own and can relate to their children’s needs.

Why you like living where you do?

We live in Woodland Park in Alva which is an amazing setting about half a mile off the main road and in the middle of a Woodland Trust wood. It is a dream for kids – full of wildlife, birds of prey and family friendly walks.

Favourite day out If the sun is shining, we head to Elie beach. Great rock pools for the kids to explore and shallow water for them to paddle in. If it’s raining – Xscape at Braehead in Glasgow has something for everyone from sledging on the real snow slope to bowling, cinema and rock climbing.

Favourite shop Well, apart from Ochil Eyes…!!! These days I do a lot of shopping online when the kids are in bed. I particularly like Notonthehighstreet. com as it has really unique gifts for everyone from children to adults. IKEA is always a favourite as the kids can go for an hour to Smaland play area while we have a wander and a coffee!

Favourite park The park next to our house at Woodland Park is good as it has lovely views, is really handy and is great for a picnic. We also go regularly to the Burngreen in Kilsyth as it has a mini road system complete with give way signs and traffic lights where you can hire bikes. The kids have all learned to go their bikes there. As well as that, there are trampolines, putting etc. A brilliant family day out!

Favourite children’s club/class: Our three older children all go to Forefront Stage School in Tillicoultry. Although they attend several dance classes, they totally adore the musical theatre group. It is a

Favourite child friendly restaurant We love going to Pizza Express in Livingston with our Tesco vouchers! This makes it much more affordable with so many mouths to feed! The staff are good with the kids and there are usually plenty of crayons and paper to keep them busy until the food arrives.

Favourite night out without the kids If we can, we try to have a night away together every couple of months. Our favourite haunt is the Blythswood hotel in Glasgow. It is the ultimate in luxury and the spa is real indulgence. Not kid friendly at all – bliss! If we only have a few hours, we’ll nip down to Paparazzi in Bridge of Allan for a bite to eat and the chance to reconnect.

Proudest eco-friendly moment I am a recycling fanatic! We designed our new kitchen around the recycling drawer. We also did away with the kettle and put in a hot water tap which provides constant boiling water and cold filtered water on demand.

Best planet saving tip: Recycle! Recycle! Recycle!

No parent should be without: A bag for all eventualities – full of snacks, drinks, spare clothes (incase of accidents!), wet wipes and toys to keep the children entertained.

Also a good, reliable baby sitter is a must for any parent (though they probably won’t fit in the bag!)

Parenting pet hates: Toys with hundreds of small pieces, they are banned in our house! The minute the packet gets opened, the bits are everywhere!

Favourite family holiday spot Anywhere away together as a family is always great. We love the East Neuk of Fife as it doesn’t take too long to get there. In particular, we like Elie and Crail as we all love to be by the sea. We own a timeshare at Kilconquhar Castle where we retreat for a lovely break every summer and the odd weekend in between. We all adore it!

Most loved children’s book: The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr – It was written in the sixties but every one of our kids has loved it. Also The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson is a firm favourite as it is suitable for all the kids to listen to before they go to bed.

Best children DVD or tele programme: As a family, we love to watch Total Wipeout and You’ve Been Framed! Good family entertainment!

Most played with toys: Our kids are big into role playing games so dressing up clothes are regularly worn and shows produced for William and I to watch!

They all love Lego and that can keep them occupied for hours. Also, anything to do with crafts is good with our kids, especially if it involves painting or sticking things.

Most successful recipe/ food: Dad’s sausage hotpot! It means mum is having a night off from cooking and the kids really love it! Happy mum… Happy kids! Also I love to bake with the kids and at the moment we are enjoying making scones – quick and easy and everyone can help.

How home life can make a big difference in the education of children

id you know that just by keeping books in your home can significantly increase your children’s likelihood of going to university and that’s irrespective of background, size of family, where they live, parents occupation or any other social factor? Further research has also shown that the biggest impact on a child’s educational development is reading to them from a very early age. So if your child is starting school for the first time this year, or they are already progressing rapidly through the school years, undertaking a few small activities at home can make a huge difference to the development and education of children and powerfully build on the learning they receive from school.

Why bother...

Most of us want our children to do well at school and a parent’s role in that success cannot be underestimated. Studies in Britain have shown that children who are supported by their families with

homework are likely to perform significantly better in academic examinations at 16 years old and beyond than those who do not. Even the best and brightest teachers can be hard pressed to address the individual needs of every child, especially in a crowded classroom. If your child finds a topic difficult, your interest as a parent will help, no matter how well or how fast your child understands what they are being taught. Parents small actions can plug these gaps, support children and really boost their development.

What activities can be taken?

Activities that involve reading, listening, writing, number awareness, sequencing, counting and learning to become aware of the world that surrounds them are perfect. They will help encourage a love and understanding of language, maths and science which are basic tools to boost any child’s education.

• Keep a library – A few books placed in reach of your children to pick up any time for browsing or talking about.

• Read to your children Sharing stories and reading together are vital to the development of a child’s literacy skills.

• Download free games, activities, and worksheets online – There are many websites offering free activities that encourage basic skill development for children and keep it fun.

• Get number crunching – Talk about numbers and show them how useful numbers are in almost everything we do. For example measure their height and work out how much they have grown, spot speed signs and funny

Problem solving – Encourage your children to think things through and work things out for themselves.

Experts suggest giving your child a simple map of where they are going, also following a recipe together are great techniques to boost concentration.

Keep talking - New experiences and discoveries are always stimulating, so encourage your child to try new things. Look for opportunities to talk to your child about their day.

Put a pen in their hands - Help them develop their handwriting skills by writing words and sentences for them to copy. Encourage them to ‘sign’ birthday and Christmas cards to their friends, and always get them to sign their own artwork.

Overall, making sure your activities with them are fun will make a real difference.

Children thrive on encouragement, someone who will listen to them when they are struggling as well as achieving.

Giving them a little personal attention that they can’t get in the classroom, all add up to fun learning for your child and peace of mind for you that they are achieving the best they can.
