Summer is here! And it’s about bloomin’ time too. If you’re anything like me you’ll be part looking forward to and part dreading the looming summer holidays. Long sunny afternoons with the family? Perfect! (cue large amounts of sunshine please!) But keeping children entertained every day for six whole weeks seems like an impossible feat, and year on year I wonder how we all manage to survive.

Journey to the stars! An exciting range of star shows is on offer this summer at the South Downs Planetarium in Chichester, located to the south of the City on the campus of the Chichester High Schools. Centrepiece of the 100-seat auditorium is the magnificent star projector which displays over 4,500 pinpoint stars on the dome above your head. Using the star projector, the shows ‘Summertime Stars, Moon and Planets’ and ‘Summer Nights, Shooting Stars’ will showcase the wonders of the summer night sky, and are suitable for would-be stargazers aged 7 and upwards. Summer days out Junior assault course and gun firing at Fort Nelson Sitting high atop Portsdown Hill, with stunning views over Portsmouth Harbour and the Meon Valley, Fort Nelson, near Fareham, is a great family day out at any time of the year and particularly during the school holidays when there are plenty of activities to keep the children entertained. This incredible monument to Victorian defence houses the Royal Armouries' national collection of artillery – The Big Guns. Wowing visitors with its impressive local history and military hardware, Fort Nelson boasts more than 350 guns of all shapes and sizes; everything from pre-gunpowder siege machines to the massive 200-tonne railway gun. Summer fun at the Farm There is always fun to be had at the Longdown Activity Farm throughout the year, but especially during the summer. Have a family plan for everyday household tasks and you will teach your kids a great life lesson. Chores help kids learn responsibility, and sharing chores gives you help around the house. Not sure your kids will go for it? Turn it into a game when they are young, a way to earn stars and later credits when they are older. The long summer holiday period is the perfect time to put this into action!
Toddler (ages 2-3) At this age, it’s more about ‘helping mum’ and having fun than chores! Toddlers could pick up/put away toys, unload the dishwasher, especially cutlery, plastic cups and Tupperware, dust (little ones love a feather duster!) Collect dirty clothes and put them in the hamper, help move clothes from washer to dryer, put clothes away.

Ages 9-11 As the chores get more complex and timeconsuming, mix them up with simple ones from the younger age groups so it doesn’t become too onerous. As before, plus: make simple meals, clean the loo (they’ll love this one!), mop floors.

For older children chores can become a normal part of their day. Suggested jobs would be as before, plus: load the dishwasher, take out the recycling, lay the table, clear the table, wash dishes (with supervision), wipe out bathroom sinks, match socks. This can easily be turned into a fun game! Fold simple clothes or tea towels, water indoor plants, feed pets.

One thing you can count on this summer is that there will be rain. When the heavens do open, you’ll need some ideas to keep your little ones occupied and you on the right side of sanity this summer. Sarah Butters offers her favourite ways to fill a wet summer day.
Get board!
Whether you’re a Jedi at Jenga or a master Monopoly player, there’s nothing like a giant board games tournament to pass the time. It’s a chance to encourage your family to forget the iPads and X Boxes of today and remember the fun you can have with three dimensional people.
Skating fun
Roller skating is amazing fun whether you’re young or old, first-timer or an expert. Solent Arena in Fareham runs public skating sessions every day of the week. You can skate to some great tunes and enjoy yourself. Family ticket and skate hire available.
Take a dip!
If the summer showers won’t allow you to get dry, grab your swimsuit and head to your local leisure centre. Many local swim schools offer intense holiday courses for children looking to master this life saving skill and you can support them with a rainy day trip to your local pool. This time of year provides the perfect opportunity to make swimming fun and get the whole family summer holiday ready.
Create a rainy day jar
Has your child ever asked to do something that you’ve not had the time for? Maybe it’s baking a batch of biscuits, building some Lego they’ve had since their birthday or showing you a dance routine they’ve created. Whenever time is against you, get your child to write the idea on a piece of paper and pop it in the Rainy Day Jar. It means you can reach into it for ideas as soon as you hear the words ‘’It’s raining!”

Keep learning alive
Six weeks is a long time to be out of the classroom! Set small writing tasks over the summer i.e. keeping a diary or writing a short story. Head to your local library and sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge - this year the theme is Record breakers. Puzzle books are great for keeping their minds ticking over and you can pick them up at most pound stores. Or consider a summer school Kip McGrath Portsmouth offer a Maths and English summer school for ages 6 – 16 with a free assessment and an individual programme to target areas of weakness. Book a holiday club
Holiday clubs aren’t the reserve of working parents. Many parents choose to book day or week clubs so that they can continue to play, learn and socialise with other children. Of course it also gives us a break too! Find holiday clubs on page 16 or visit our website.

Your local museum or activity centre is rain proof and packed with family activities to keep you all occupied. Take a look at our What’s On guide to find out what’s happening near you.
If you can’t beat ‘em…
Throw caution to the….er…rain, and get everyone wrapped up in waterproofs and wellies and head out with the aim to get wet! Kids will love having free reign to splash in puddles. Make sure there are piles of towels and warm dry clothes ready for when you get back, then huddle up on the sofa with blankets and a film afternoon.

Coping with first day nerves (yours and theirs!)

You’ve bought the uniform, sewn on the nametapes and packed their book bag. When the big first day is almost upon you, reduce the chances of tears at the classroom door with our starting school tips.

Join the club Most parents agree; kids need to be stimulated and to have plenty going on to stop them getting bored. There’s no doubt that a couple of well-chosen activities can be great for giving your child an insight into areas that the school curriculum can’t cover, while having something that they will look forward to each week.
What do clubs and classes offer your child?
A chance to mix with children from other schools and areas; this will widen your child’s social circle. It also allows them the chance to take part in artistic, musical and sporting activities not offered at school. Outside clubs can increase confidence, persistence and patience and the ability to mix and work as a team. You never know, it could also be the beginning of a potential career!
What age is best to start classes?
In the early years a good run in the park is great for letting off steam, and free! At this age they can get very tired very quickly so an art, singing or baby ballettype class with the emphasis on play is great. As they move through infant and junior school adding a couple of low-key activities to look forward to like sports, swimming, dancing are all great choices for little ones. As dreaded tests loom, add an educational class if your child is struggling with one subject. Extra maths or reading tuition can make all the difference to confidence. At Senior school age it’s easier to add activities as energy and independence increases. As more exams come up, be flexible about allowing them to miss or drop activities.
