What’s Inside Welcome.... to the January and February edition of Families Sussex Coast Magazine, I hope that you all have had a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

This issue we are focusing on getting our children moving and how we can encourage this; with so many wonderful clubs and classes in our area as well Leisure Centres we really are spoilt for choice.

We have also included in this issue a healthy one pot recipe for all the family, that is easy to make and nutritious.

January and February can be tricky months as the children might have a slump after all of the festivities and keeping them out and about in the cold weather is still very important so have a look on page 11 for some ideas of where to take them if the weather is not looking too promising.

Last spotting more than 8.5 million birds Breakfast is undergoing a revival, led by on-trend pop up breakfast cafés, all day breakfast restaurants and grab‘n’go innovations. Now the organisers of Breakfast Week (24 – 30th January 2016) have joined forces with TV presenter and model Vogue Williams, who won the ITV Bear Gryll’s Mission Survive programme, to call on the nation to make it their mission to rethink breakfast.

This year’s survey takes part on 30th and 31st of January. To take part, simply spend one hour counting the birds in your garden or local park, and record the highest number of each bird species seen at any one time. February 13th – 21st Support National Nest Box Week at Hever Castle’s ‘Living with Birds’ this Half Term and enjoy some family fun.

Nature expert, Tim Christian, returns to lead a bird box building workshop* (*£6 in addition to entrance fee). Building a bird box to take home contributes to the conservation effort in the UK while giving you the pleasure of observing any breeding birds you attract to the garden.

Children can join a FREE bird themed craft workshop and find out more about different species of British birds on a birds spotting trail in the grounds. Visitors can also buy a bag of bird food* at the information centre (*50p) to feed the birds and ducks.

National Nest Box Week is organised each year by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), Britain’s leading bird research charity.

They encourage everyone to put up nest boxes in their local area to promote biodiversity and conservation of our breeding birds, particularly now the natural nest sites on which many of our bird species depend, such as holes in trees and buildings, are fast disappearing.

From February 13th (weather dependent) visitors can follow a snowdrop trail through the grounds where a dusting of frost adds to the beauty of a walk in the award-winning gardens. At this time of year, delicate snowdrop bulbs are starting to emerge after their winter dormancy, the first sign that spring is just around the corner.

There’s more to school than lessons !

These days, education is about much more than what goes on in the classroom.

Most schools – whether state or private – offer a range of extra-curricular and enrichment activities and these can be fun, educational, sociable, confidence -boosting or all of these.

So how can you ensure your child capitalises on the opportunities on offer but still gets the balance right between work, rest and play?

Choosing activities Follow your son or daughter’s lead when deciding which classes to sign up for – most kids have a strong feel for what appeals to them. That said, it’s also worth pointing them towards something you think they might benefit from, such as drama sessions for a shy child.

Don’t force a square peg into a round hole It might be ‘daddy’s dream’ for your son to be the next Beckham but if your little boy hates the idea, making children take up an activity that they really don’t feel good about, in the hope it’ll grow on them, can be counter-productive.

Encourage persistence Some of us have flighty children who get super-excited about an activity but within weeks, lose enthusiasm – unfortunately only once you’ve coughed up a whole term’s fees. Consider having a rule that your child does have to see the period you paid for out before they can give up – they might well change their mind back after a few weeks anyway!

How much is too much?

There’s no set answer about how many activities are optimal – it varies for each child. Some will get more tired than others and find just one or two classes suffice, others embrace a packed schedule of karate to clarinet without losing energy.

Needs change over time Certainly most reception children are exhausted enough from school for the first term or so, without lengthening their day by adding extra activities. Keep things simple at this stage.

Older primary children have a decent opportunity to learn a few different skills and enjoy classes, whereas once they start secondary, longer commutes, more homework and exam pressures might mean reining things in.

Relaxation time is vital too Watch out for activity overscheduling – quiet contemplation and scope to be creative and relax is just as important as that second musical instrument or third sport. If your child doesn’t have space to just play and chill out, consider cutting back.

If your child is struggling: particularly if he or she finds their class work difficult, it might be worth putting additional effort into building skills at home or with a tutor. Talk to their teacher about what help they need to focus on. Perhaps they can suggest fun but educational games, or workbooks.

We all want our children to grow up healthy and happy, so how can we help them to achieve these goals?

Many children will be opening presents of new tablets, leap pads, computer games and other electronic devices.

Whilst it is important and part of their education to become competent with technology we must also encourage them to play and be active every day.

It is recommended that children from the ages of 5 to 17 should be involved in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity a day (NHS Physical activity guidelines). This can include playing games, running around, PE lessons, playtimes at school, chasing games, visits to the park, scooting and riding on their bikes.

Keeping fit improves a child’s body and your mind. If they are fit they have more energy and can concentrate better on school work.

But how can you improve your child’s fitness?

Children naturally have a lot of energy, but several issues threaten the fitness of many children in the UK and around the world.

Failure to exercise enough is a primary cause.

Another contributing factor is bad eating habits.

Here are some ways to improve a child’s stamina.

Perform simple workout exercises with children. These can be done in just 10 to 15 minutes a day. Jumping jacks, stretching and (even jogging on the spot) are ways to improve stamina and, ultimately, physical fitness.

Purchase basic exercise equipment 2 for children. A skipping rope is a great place to start. It’s affordable, easy to use, and works a wide range of muscles. Sports equipment such as a rugby ball, a football or a basketball can serve as popular pieces of sports equipment that could keep your child busy for hours. A bicycle is another item that will improve stamina if used regularly.

Take children outside to walk or participate in other activities.

Look into recreational sports classes such as Activ8 that teaches multi-skills. Team sports have a number of positives, including keeping your child active and giving them a social environment. Find an activity you can take part in as a family. Activ8 offer family fitness sessions where you can have fun and stay active together.

Provide healthy meals.

Healthy eating-including plenty of fruits, vegetables and multigrain--will go a long way toward improving a child’s stamina.

Make sure the child drinks plenty of water.

There are many projects and schemes set up to help parents increase their child’s fitness and health. One of these is the Healthy Hearts project run in Adur schools.

This has been running successfully across Adur Schools since 2012 as a partnership project between Adur District Council and the British Heart Foundation to address the inequalities in heart health.

Adur has now contracted Activ8 For Kids Ltd to run this project. As well as the Reception and year 1 programme already implemented they will be introducing a year 2 and 3 Happy Heart programme and a year 5 -Ways to Well Being programme.

Activ8 will be using these programmes to educate and support families to lead healthier lifestyles.

The aim is to help prevent unhealthy behaviours and habits in children before they reach their teens and adulthood, to help give them the best chance of living a healthy and long life.

Throughout this project they are working with children aged 4-10 years (in primary schools in Adur) and the parents, carers and teachers of all these age groups.

Activ8 For Kids has been operating for over 3 year in the Arun, Worthing and Adur areas. Their aims are to inspire children to be active and lead healthy lifestyles.

Activ8 already work with hundreds of children and over 14 schools across Worthing and Adur to promote healthy living, increase activity levels and raise the quality of PE teaching and learning across schools.

They also run over 15 after school clubs teaching children the fundamentals of movement skills and developing an enjoyment of physical activity.

Every child who takes part in the 6 week programme will receive an Activ8 At Home kit.

These will be age appropriate and follow on from the activities and learning they have experienced through the programme, encouraging families to continue with active habits developed during the programme.

New year, new fit you ?

Activ8 will also offer all families the opportunity to attend a free Activ8 day during the summer holidays. This will combine fun family fitness sessions with an opportunity to educate the families on healthy eating and living.

As parents we can help form our children’s lifelong exercise and diet habits. Not by making them eat or take part in activities, but by encouraging them to make healthy choices, finding activities they enjoy and by taking part in exercise ourselves.

Children love to see their parents letting go and enjoying exercise – and will often want to take part too.

Children need to raise their heart rate

and get out of breath to really benefit from activity.

There are so many ways of getting your child active. Let them experience a wide range of activities, help them to find the activities they really enjoy and encourage them to try new ones: walking to school, cycling, running, playing games, going to the park, scooting, cycling, walking the dog, swimming, sports based classes, multi skills clubs, soft play, dancing and gymnastics.

Why not create a list of activities you want to do as a family,?

This will help you all to become more active and will help you build it in to your weekly timetables.

Make sticking to your new year’s resolutions easier this year by…

Make a realistic plan that you can stick to – that means not completely restricting yourself and not devising a routine that’s at odds with your family life and other commitments.

Reward yourself regularly – treat yourself to a glossy mag, a book or new lippie for every couple of pounds of weight loss or a week of gym sessions.

Enjoy yourself - – you’re not going to benefit

much from a sport or an exercise class if you hate it so choose something fun – roller blading, dancing or ice-skating are all great calorie burners.

Make good new habits – don’t think of being on a diet so much as a new, improved healthy way of eating that the whole family can benefit from.

Make it sociable – exercising or dieting with

friends can be enormously motivating, and a bit of healthy competition is a good thing!

Try lots of new things – don’t just stick with aerobics because you have always done it, how about a spinning class, yoga or pilates?

Exercise with your children – playing football, running around the park, skipping and swimming with the kids are all fun ways to tone up and burn flab.

Make mealtimes special – don’t eat on the hoof or snack between meals, you’ve heard it before but the simplest and easiest weight loss can be achieved with three sensible, balanced meals a day.

Don’t deprive yourself – and don’t see foods

as ‘good’ and ‘bad’, successful dieters are usually those who allow themselves a little bit of what they fancy.

Don’t give up – a blip here and there does not mean you are doomed to failure, just keep going.

Top Tips on Flexible Working 1. When negotiating flexible working, make sure

you think practically about what works for your family. For instance, make sure your childcare plans allow enough leeway so you don’t end up rushing everywhere all the time.

2. Be incredibly organised. Have a list where you write down everything you have to do. You can then feel a sense of achievement as you tick it off, even if you are adding more things to it in the meantime.

3. Prepare all the school/nursery/childminder stuff you need in the morning the night before, including uniforms and lunch boxes. That way you only have to get the kids up, dressed, breakfasted and out in the morning. Anything more increases the stress levels and means you arrive at work as if you have been on a combat training course.

4. Try to plan ahead so you are not always re-arranging childcare at the last minute.

This includes inset days, holidays, Christmas plays,summer outings, etc, etc.

5. Have a back-up back-up plan. Negotiate with your partner, if you have one, or any other form of support what you will do if there is an emergency such as school closure and try to share the burden. If you know in advance that there is going to be an emergency such as a school strike negotiate with your work to see if you can work more flexibly that day, eg, from home.

6. Multi-task. Try to save time by doing

several things at once. If you are going out to drop someone off, make sure you remember to do all other tasks that need doing outdoors, eg posting a letter, enroute. Eventually it will become a way of life.

7. Be good to your friends and family. You will

need them. If a friend does you a favour, ensure you always repay it so that you can ask again in the future.

8. Simplify your life - say no to the things you don’t need to do and build in some rest time into your life. Everyone needs a duvet day once in a while.

Chances are, since the kids came along, life’s been a little (or a lot) less romantic. Mothers’ Day is the perfect time to put this right, with a hotel reservation slipped inside the card and the grandparents on standby for next weekend. Happy days all round.

Mothering Sunday was originally a day-off from Lent, when servants were allowed to travel home to see their mums, and have a slap-up dinner together. Traditional presents were flowers and cakes – and you won’t go too far wrong if you stick to tradition.

What mum doesn’t love having the family all around one table, with cake and flowers thrown in? But mum’s not making the feast, or doing the washing up – oh no. Book her favourite restaurant or pub, or make the meal yourself and make sure you wash up afterwards.

Again, a traditional but excellent choice.

Something really unique

With a little planning ahead, you and the kids can present mum with a truly unique and handmade creation. Take the children’s fingerprints or hand or foot casts, and have them made into pictures, keepsakes or jewellery – there are lots of places that do this now. Alternatively, take the kids to a pottery painting shop and have a great time making a personalised plate, mug or vase that mum will treasure forever.

Time to herself

This is one thing we mums often crave more than anything, so organise her some proper “me time”. Book her a spa day and let her be pampered to her heart’s delight or indulge her hobby (yoga/writing/ crafts/cookery) with a weekend course. If she doesn’t get to see her closest friends enough, maybe you could secretly liaise with them and organise a weekend away? You’ll be rolling in Brownie points after any of these.

Little Embroiders’ trail Standen

The Plantation kids want to create a piece of art but they’ve lost some animals and flowers they want to include.

Can you help them find everything?

Once you have helped them you can have a go at making your own artwork.

Inside the house, have a go at the spotter trail, which offers a glimpse into the lives of the Beale family who lived at Standen. Don’t miss the artwork designed by the Embroiders’ Guild influenced by the garden at Standen.

Normal admission charges apply, £1 per garden trail (house trail free). From 11am – 3pm.
